Interests

  1. I'm interested in the wider subject of polytopes/tilings, and move around randomly within! Tom Ruen (talk) 04:26, 30 August 2009 (UTC)
  2. It'll be fine with me. I don't like creating WikiProjects though, so I'll stick with polyhedra.Professor M. Fiendish, Esq. 04:42, 30 August 2009 (UTC)
  3. I have various specialised interests within and going beyond this topic. Those within include stellation, facetting, duality, and formal definition of a polyhedron. Those beyond include spacefillings, and various mathematical topics which underpin the theory of polyhedra, such as abstract polytopes, projective geometry, synthetic geometry and so on. I am also keen to see the polyhedron articles develop encyclopedically in line with Wikipedia philosophy. -- Cheers, Steelpillow (Talk) 12:44, 30 August 2009 (UTC)

Starting off this project

Wait, do we need an ad calling people to join our new WikiProject? Professor M. Fiendish, Esq. 04:42, 30 August 2009 (UTC)

There can be quite a lot of administration involved in organizing and running a WikiProject. Hope someone's up to it (grin). Was it proposed first, or was any preparatory investigation carried out? -- Cheers, Steelpillow (Talk) 12:44, 30 August 2009 (UTC)

Pruning

There has been a tendency for the polyhedron pages to collect up folklore, original research, and trivial pages on every polyhedron ever described. I have been working on the folklore for some time, and trying to discourage the others to no great effect. We need to focus hard on the encyclopedic scope of polyhedra, and prune back stuff that falls outside Wikipedia policy. -- Cheers, Steelpillow (Talk) 12:44, 30 August 2009 (UTC)

Seconded! I propose the list of uniform polyhedra has a extra column for duals, seeing that we have all the images already. Professor M. Fiendish, Esq. 07:49, 10 September 2009 (UTC)

Coxeter-Dynkin symbol graphics

If you know (or care) anything about these symbols, there is a dispute going on at Talk:Coxeter–Dynkin_diagram#SVG_vs_PNG. Tom created lots of .png bitmap graphics, and another user has been replacing them with .svg vector graphics. Although svg is the "official" format, there are problems with these ones. Please comment if you can, and hopefully we can build a consensus on the way ahead. -- Cheers, Steelpillow (Talk) 18:52, 9 March 2010 (UTC)

Database of uniform tilings on Wikimedia Commons

Hello, I've started a database to classify uniform tilings and their duals on the Euclidean plane, sphere and hyperbolic plane. The initial reason to do that was that currently there are hundreds of unsorted pictures of hyperbolic tessellations.

Database structure

The database is located in the following subcategories:

  1. Commons:Category:Euclidean tilings
  2. Commons:Category:Hyperbolic tilings
  3. Commons:Category:Spherical tilings
  4. Commons:Category:Regular tilings
  5. Commons:Category:Uniform tilings
  6. Commons:Category:Dual uniform tilings

First three represent various geometries, while last three — types of tessellations.

I'll try to describe roughly the structure.

The category Uniform tiling 4-12-16 is mutually connected with article truncated hexaoctagonal tiling.

  • For plane tilings, the same scheme used except dual uniform plane tilings are named with their full names. However, there are redirects for all eight duals, for example, you can categorize new picture using name Dual uniform tiling V 3-3-3-3-6, and it will be automatically placed in Floret pentagonal tiling.
  • Category Spherical tilings is simpler since there are quite few pictures (for each of 13 uniform tilings plus 5 regular tilings, there is just one or two pictures). One non-trivial thing is that uniform spherical tilings and Archimedean solids are horizontally interlinked by pairs "polyhedron - tiling".

Currently there are ~1400 uncategorized pictures of hyperbolic tilings and their duals in Hyperbolic tilings and Poincaré Disc. Others could categorize them gradually in free time; I've tried to collect most "nice" pictures (although it's of course subjective).

I'm writing this to make sure the structure is understandable and the database can be maintained by others (i.e. categorizing pictures, adding and categorizing categories, connections with other topics). Maybe it could be transformed into some documentation later. Please ask if something is unclear, incorrect or you have suggestions.

Hi, I have replied on the database's talk page: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category_talk:Tilings-db — Cheers, Steelpillow (Talk) 13:32, 17 August 2013 (UTC)
I've answered there. Stannic (talk) 15:07, 17 August 2013 (UTC)
Would welcome contributions there from others, too. — Cheers, Steelpillow (Talk) 16:22, 17 August 2013 (UTC)

Leaflet for Wikiproject Polyhedra at Wikimania 2014

Please note: This is an updated version of a previous post that I made

Hi all,

My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.

One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.

This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:

• Active Wikiprojects: Wikiproject Medicine, WikiProject Video Games, Wikiproject Film

• Tech projects/Tools, which may be looking for either users or developers.

• Less known major projects: Wikinews, Wikidata, Wikivoyage, etc.

• Wiki Loves Parliaments, Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves ____

• Wikimedia thematic organisations, Wikiwomen’s Collaborative, The Signpost

The deadline for submissions is 1st July 2014

For more information or to sign up for one for your project, go to:

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Henagon

The article Henagon has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

This term is not used in reliable sources. This article is based on a self-published web site and an off-topic source, embellished with original research. In the context given here it is mathematically broken and is excluded by all verifiable definitions of a polygon, polyhedron or polytope - see talk page.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. — Cheers, Steelpillow (Talk) 17:04, 5 January 2015 (UTC)

Citing Johnson's preprint

Johnson, N.W.; Geometries and transformations (2015) is currently being cited widely in may articles but is apparently only in preprint. We do not know the anticipated publication date. I have asked if this referencing is acceptable, at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Mathematics#Citing_a_preprint. — Cheers, Steelpillow (Talk) 11:23, 6 January 2015 (UTC)

WikiProject X is live!

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

A new newsletter directory is out!

A new Newsletter directory has been created to replace the old, out-of-date one. If your WikiProject and its taskforces have newsletters (even inactive ones), or if you know of a missing newsletter (including from sister projects like WikiSpecies), please include it in the directory! The template can be a bit tricky, so if you need help, just post the newsletter on the template's talk page and someone will add it for you.

Barnstar

Introducing the Polyhedron Barnstar. Jerm (talk) 16:26, 20 April 2021 (UTC)

The Johnson Solid situation

For the purposes of this section, a convex regular-faced polyhedron is one that is strictly convex and has no non-regular faces. A Johnson solid is a convex regular-faced polyhedron that is not uniform. We will not argue about names.

From 2013 to 2020, the page List of Johnson solids served as a list of Johnson solids by Johnson's number and their properties including symmetry group. The latest revision of that version of the article is this one. But in 2021, an anonymous user replaced it with a different version. This one includes uniform polyhedra and is ordered by number of sides. The only properties are numbers of faces, edges, vertices, and faces of each edge count. Meanwhile in 2015, DBoffey, the creator of multiple previous non-notable geometry articles, created List of convex regular-faced polyhedra, which lists convex-regular faced polyhedra and the same properties as the 2021 article, but without the ordering.

Between these three articles at two addresses, I say there are no more than two meaningful articles:

  • A list of Platonic, Archimedean and Johnson solids and selected prisms and antiprisms with properties, formatted like this one
  • An article about the ordering used by that anonymous user.

However, the latter might not be notable.

In fact, the user who posted it seems sketchy. He posted his reasoning, with a link to the On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences, in the talk pages of both the article in question and Johnson solid. Although the OEIS link is legit, the user seems to have used multiple IPs (1 2 3) to contribute along with an actual account (橋3本0環4奈0與2梅4森5質7數). The account is believed to be a sockpuppet.
