Deleting this project?

How "active" do we have to be? Personally I had a look at this fairly recently (by my standards) back in August, but since then I went away to think about how I might tweak SVG maps to improve the final image, so I'm taking stock of these things before I go on a frenzy of map contributions here on Wikipedia.
Think of this page as a front for the large (and very active) project over at openstreetmap.org, which is tooling up to do some serious Wikipedia contributing. Please don't delete this project while we are not looking! You could head over to this page: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/Wikipedia ...and leave us a message about it.
By the way somebody on that deleting discussion suggested that this should actually be a kind of HowTo appearing under the more general maps project. That might be a better way forward I guess. -- Harry Wood 10:33, 5 September 2007 (UTC)

Streets in London

Somebody said "Anyone going through lists like this, for areas where we know OSM has good coverage?

Yes. I knew there had to be a list like that somewhere. That's exactly what we need to do! OSM has very goodcoverage of Central London, although the renderings are little untidy in many places. There's lots of articles we can add to there. How to coordinate this? Maybe I'll do some of the Category:Streets in the City of London. -- Harry Wood 18:22, 9 July 2007 (UTC)

GPX waypoints

How do you tell your GPS (specifically Garmin Nuvi 370) to save waypoints to a .GPX file. The current.gpx file on the GPS I borrowed was empty... gren グレン 11:30, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

Hi Gren. From a very brief fiddle with my dad's new garmin, I found I was able to get a GPX file out of the 'mapsource' software. Just do 'save as...' and choose the file type gpx. Seemed to work. There might be smarter way of doing it though.
For a quicker (and probably better) response, you'll need to contact the OSM community more directly (e.g. hop on the IRC channel quickly) and ask everyone. -- Harry Wood (talk) 14:51, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

Embedding OSM Slippy Map?

Is it possible to embed the html code provide by OSM's Export to HTML feature. For example

<iframe width="425" height="350" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" src="http://www.openstreetmap.org/export/embed.html?bbox=-74.02028,40.69993,-74.00487,40.71112&layer=mapnik" style="border: 1px solid black"></iframe><br /><small><a href="http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=40.705525&lon=-74.012575&zoom=14&layers=B000FTFT">View Larger Map</a></small>

That should embed a small slippy map of the tip of Manhattan.--Trounce (talk) 16:23, 4 November 2008 (UTC)

Are you asking whether it is possible to use that on Wikipedia?
Unfortunately you can't just paste in that HTML fragment, since Wikipedia will block a lot of HTML syntax. Particularly the <iframe> tag (for very good reasons)
The "correct" way for this kind of thing to be enabled on Wikipedia, would be to have a special MediaWiki extension installed (only doable by powerful sysadmin people) There are two such extensions described here: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/MediaWiki_extension The slippy map extension was also move to to mediawiki.org org here: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:SlippyMap No such extension are installed on Wikipedia at the current time. Various technical/scalability/usability considerations are probably preventing this I guess (do we even want a zooming panning maps appearing on Wikipedia articles when it comes down to it?)
...the procedure for extracting images, and uploading the into Wikipedia (described on this page) is actually quite good in terms of giving flexibility to create a customised crisp illustrations of Wikipedia articles. Only problem with it, is syncing improvements to the map which are taking place on openstreetmap.org
-- Harry Wood (talk) 10:06, 5 November 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, I was asking was it possible. One of the reasons I wanted to have the slippy map embedded is because the OSM map is being updated all the time. I thought with the slippy map embedded in an article it would update itself automatically (as opposed to an SVG snapshot of an OSM map -frozen in time). You make a good point when you say "do we even want a zooming panning maps appearing on Wikipedia articles when it comes down to it?". However, I think it would be a positive addition to have a small slippy map on the page of city/town articles.Perhaps if its possible the use of the OSM maps could be strictly limited to a city/town info-box template- that way it would prevent any wild over use of the maps on Wikipedia?
Thanks for your answer.--Trounce (talk) 10:57, 5 November 2008 (UTC)
It doesn't have to be zooming or panning. It should only highlight the relation, way or node in question, and link to a big OSM map. I was planning on writing down all hiking trails in Croatia, but without a Slippy map plugin, it would be too much work.

RFC on coordinates in highway articles

There is currently a discussion taking place at WT:HWY regarding the potential use of coordinates in highway articles. Your input is welcomed. --Rschen7754 01:40, 26 December 2011 (UTC)

Deletion of Template:Osmrelation

New request was opened - Wikipedia:Templates for discussion#Template:Osmrelation - you may submit your comments or help keep it. I am disappointed about someone asking to delete this template at all, because it links to a valuable data in another free and open source project. Thanks for help!--Kozuch (talk) 09:49, 6 April 2012 (UTC)

State of the Map 2013

The OSM equivalent of Wikimania, State of the Map, is in Birmingham, England (my home town), in just under two weeks (places are still available!). I will be there. Are any of you coming? Should we have Wikipedia meetup? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 17:42, 25 August 2013 (UTC)

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

Slippy Map on every city page?

I think that a map of the city would be very informational, on any city article that does not have a map yet. I am talking about a map showing the city center/suburbs, not a country map showing where the city lies within the country. What do you think about it? This would require enabling the Slippy Map wikimedia extension (which is already enabled on Wikivoyage, by the way). If we can gather a few motivates people here, we can develop the idea, and propose it to the administrators. Who agrees/disagrees? Nicolas1981 (talk) 08:20, 8 April 2013 (UTC)

I think this is a very interesting idea, it's certainly something to be explored. Pikolas (talk) 11:49, 12 December 2014 (UTC)

WikiProject X is live!

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

Can I use openstreetmap screenshots?

My question: Can I use openstreetmap screenshots? I work on an African language wikipedia, so it is easy to take a screenshot and label it afterwards (names etc). Is there a copyright problem with that? Kipala (talk) 23:19, 12 March 2017 (UTC)
