Main page[edit]

With the 2010 Games nearly upon us it would be nice to get some content relating to the Paralympics on to the main page, as we don't yet have any featured articles the best bet will probably be in the form of WP:DYK so please nominate any new (or newly expanded) articles that meet the criteria at Template talk:Did you know. I'm starting off with Great Britain at the 1992 Winter Paralympics which I also hope i'll be able to take to GA status as an example of Category:Nations at the Winter Paralympics based on the full guidelines at WP:OLYMOSNAT. - Basement12 (T.C) 14:52, 4 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Added DYK section to the page, and a link to WP:OLYMOSNAT. Bib (talk) 17:27, 4 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The article Tofiri Kibuuka (about a Paralympian), which I wrote a while back, has finally been queued for DYK. It should be on the main page fairly soon. Aridd (talk) 19:26, 8 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've just created and submitted the article Lango Sinkamba, on Zambia's first Paralympian, who is also president of Zambia's NPC. Aridd (talk) 17:59, 15 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The DYK section is now updated by a bot. Bib (talk) 15:07, 23 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Should be an independent WikiProject[edit]

I feel very strongly that this should be a WikiProject with its own identity separate from the Olympics WikiProject. Having it as a subsection of the Olympics Project only serves to perpetuate the idea that the Paralympics is a "little wellfare event for the poor cripples" tagged onto the tail of the "real" Olympics. To quote the movie MurderBall: "We didn't come for a hug, we came for a fucking gold medal!" Roger (talk) 12:10, 5 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I see your point but there are too many cross overs in both the Games themselves and the content and style of their articles on Wikipedia to fully seperate the two. If separation was to happen it would most probably result in articles on Paralympic subjects looking very different to those on the Olympics when what we should really be doing is working towards making them as similar as possible so that they don't look like they've been tagged onto the tail of the "real" Olympics - Basement12 (T.C) 12:26, 5 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I think it would help if we can adjust the look of the template itself. The word Paralympics shouldn't appear for the first time at the bottom like a "footnote". Even if we do need to have it structurally integrated with the Olympics Project - for the good reasons you mention - the template should use the word Paralympics prominently in the large title text. Perhaps talk to the "parent" project to change the main title wording to "Olympics and Paralympics". While we think about this, I'll just go on tagging relevant articles. Roger (talk) 12:41, 5 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Biographies[edit]

Do we want biographic articles on all participants or are only medallists notable? Roger (talk) 10:33, 12 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

As far as Olympics are concerned all participants are considered notable, it's the highest level of their sport if amateurs or they qualify anyway if professional, see WP:ATH. I assume Paralympians should also be considered notable under that same guideline. Basement12 (T.C) 12:14, 12 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Unreferenced living people articles bot[edit]

User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects provides a list, updated daily, of unreferenced living people articles (BLPs) related to your project. There has been a lot of discussion recently about deleting these unreferenced articles, so it is important that these articles are referenced.

The unreferenced articles related to your project can be found at >>>Wikipedia:WikiProject Olympics/Paralympics/Archive 1/Unreferenced BLPs<<<

If you do not want this wikiproject to participate, please add your project name to this list.

Thank you. Okip 02:49, 28 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Paralympics infobox[edit]

Added 'next' and 'previous' to Template:Paralympics infobox. It adds a link to the previous and next paralympic games in the infobox. (See example). The links are titled for example '2006 Winter' and '2010 Winter' for the Beijing Games. Should they maybe be titled 'IX Winter Games' and 'X Winter Games' instead? Or only the year, '2006' and '2010'? Any comments? Bib (talk) 14:35, 3 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I think we should seperate the Winter and Summer Games. For example, for the Beijing Games, the links should go to the summer games that occured before and after ('2004 Summer' and '2012 Summer'). Another example is that, for the Vancouver Games, the links should go to '2006 Winter' and '2014 Winter'. I have changed that in the Winter Paralympics articles. The titles are OK as they are. If we use the formal titles (i.e. X Winter Games, etc.) or just the years, it could be confusing to some readers. Another suggestion is that the titles could include the locations instead of just Winter of Summer (i.e. Torino 2006). RG104 (talk) 23:49, 8 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe there could be two sets of previous and next, to the previous winter and summer games, and to the next winter and summer games. Then it could say 'Winter:' and under there < Torino 2006 - Sochi 2014 >, and 'Summer:' < Beijing 2008 - London 2012 > so it includes both winter and summer games. Bib (talk) 00:31, 9 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I think that the 'Summer:' section should go on top for Summer Paralympics articles and the 'Winter:' section should go on top for the Winter Paralympics articles. For example, on the Beijing Paralympics article, the 'Summer' section should be before the 'Winter' section since they were a Summer Paralympics. Vice versa for the Vancouver Games. Is that possible? RG104 (talk) 00:02, 10 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Good idea. Changed the infobox code and the articles. Bib (talk) 11:32, 10 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Medal tables[edit]

For the articles of each Paralympic Games, should we only show the top ten NPCs in the medal tables and include the entire medal table in a seperate article? We could then put a link to the medal table article on the main article. This would solve the problem of repetition of the information. RG104 (talk) 00:57, 10 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Then it would be similar to the Olympic Games articles, where there is a separate article even for the early ones, where there is only 21 medal winning nations. Bib (talk) 18:18, 12 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Your comment left me a little confused. Do we want to shorten the medal tables in the main articles? After reading your comment, my guess would be yes. Just wanted your opinion. Thanks. RG104 (talk) 21:03, 12 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Haha, I can't understand it myself. But yes, I vote yes. Bib (talk) 23:36, 12 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed that above the shortened medal tables in some of the main articles, it says "The top ten listed NPCs by number of gold medals are listed below." That doesn't really sound right. "Listed" is repeated. I suggest we change it to "The top 10 NPCs by number of gold medals are listed below." I also suggest that the sorting feature in the small medal tables should be removed if it is there since it doesn't really help. The sorting feature should only be included in the medal table articles. RG104 (talk) 00:38, 15 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds good. Bib (talk) 07:21, 15 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Great Britain at the 1992 Winter Paralympics[edit]

Having taken the above article to good article reassessment a user is now insistent that the article (and therefore perhaps all/many in Category:Nations at the Winter Paralympics, Category:Nations at the Summer Paralympics, Category:Nations at the Winter Olympics and Category:Nations at the Summer Olympics) is not notable and has repeatedly placed a banner suggetsing merging with 1992 Winter Paralympics or possibly deleting the article. Some input from other members of the project upon the notability of this type of arfticle and what you believe should constitute a GA would be appreciated at Wikipedia:Good article reassessment/Great Britain at the 1992 Winter Paralympics/1 - Basement12 (T.C) 11:48, 17 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Our standard policy (I don't know what else to call it) is to create seperate articles for each nation participating at each Paralympics. The Olympic articles also use the same policy. I don't know why this user is insisting that the article above should be merged with the other article. I have also come across one such user who had deleted a medal table article. I had to then recreate the article. We should inform these users of what our standard policy is. RG104 (talk) 20:17, 17 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Separate importance scale[edit]

There are some task forces that has a separate importance scale for the task force, than for its wiki project. It keeps the wikiproject's rating, but adds for example: This article is supported by the Paralympics task force (marked as High-importance). (See for example Talk:1939 Claxton Shield). Should this be added to the Paralympics task force too? Bib (talk) 10:51, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It could be, but is there really a need? To me giving articles an importance rating is a bit arbitrary at the best of times; articles such as Paralympic Games and those on a specific year's Games are high/top (is the top importance rating even used?) but beyond that the distinction gets a bit clouded. I'm willing to be convinced if anyone has some reasons for it though - Basement12 (T.C) 16:00, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Might not be a need. But I wonder, could the ratings on the Paralympic articles be changed to be the same as on the Olympic articles? Quite often the Olympic article get a lower importance rating than the similar Paralympic article. For example the 2006, 2010 and 2014 P & O Games. Bib (talk) 10:21, 29 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Notability guidelines[edit]

Just a heads up incase you haven't already seen it on a discussion that began at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Olympics#Sports Notability that I've now taken to Wikipedia talk:Notability (sports)#Olympians. The idea is to get notability for athletes, nation at a Games and event articles included in any new guidelines on sports notability - Basement12 (T.C) 16:03, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Paralympic Games FA collaboration[edit]

Thanks to the contributions of several editors I was able to shepherd the Paralympic Games article to GA status. At this point I would like to seek an editor or editors who would be willing to work with me on pushing this article to FA status. It has become evident to me that I am not knowledgeable enough on the subject to really provide the comprehensive coverage the article needs if it is to make a run at FAC. I am seeking an editor or editors who is/are more familiar with the subject matter and who would like to work with me on this article. I think a couple of weeks of concerted effort could get it there. I think it would be very appropriate for the Paralympic Games to be this project's first Featured Article. Anyone willing to help? H1nkles (talk) citius altius fortius 18:36, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Can people who are not "more familiar with the subject matter" help too? Cause then I'm in. Bib (talk) 10:21, 29 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Without question I'd love the help I just can't devote the energy to a full fledge run on it. I want to try and model this article after the Olympic Games article. I'll post some thoughts for improvement on the article's talk page. Any other editors interested in collaborating on this effort please indicate so here. Thanks. H1nkles (talk) citius altius fortius 15:57, 29 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sighted guides[edit]

The sighted guides in some (every?) events with visually impaired athletes get a Paralympic medal (if they are in the top3). See for example this image:

I didn't know this, but the picture is proof. They should definately be included in the results, even though they are not disabled, and even though the Official Vancouver site did not mention the name of the guides in the athletes section. This means the medal tables could or should include a mention of how many guides received medals too. It is probably hard if not impossible to find information on the guides on the earlier games, but for the most recent games the information is available. Bib (talk) 20:34, 2 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Correction: They are included at the official Vancouver site. [1]. Bib (talk) 07:48, 3 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Correction2: The medal tables would not need to be changed, since the visually impaired skier and the guide is a team, it does not change the table. OK, done with the corrections now. Bib (talk) 13:53, 3 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Help wanted with establishing a wikiproject for "Disability"[edit]

Please forgive me going a little off-topic here but I don't know where to turn. I have been giving a lot of thought to the idea that Wikipedia really needs a WikiProject Disability. I first raised the issue at Talk:Disability#We_need_a_WikiProject some weeks ago but got only limited response - but all positive. The Category Disability is sorted under the categories Health and Society but as I'm sure all here are aware, the subject of disability is far broader than just medicine or sociology. It includes fields and topics from Politics to Engineering, Architecture to Medicine, Human rights to Sport, and so on. I have no idea about the nuts and bolts of creating a WikiProject hence my appeal for help. Roger (talk) 18:02, 1 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

There are separate categories for wikiprojects, a Disability WikiProject could fit in the category Category:Society WikiProjects.
To look at other WikiProjects and copy from those, is one way to do it. Many Projects have started with only a few lines of text though. If I can help with the wikiproject in any way, I want to. Bib (talk) 20:04, 1 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

How does one go about creating a Project page? I'm ready to do it but don't know how. Roger (talk) 08:23, 10 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

First create the main page at Wikipedia:WikiProject Disability.
Stuff to add to the main page:
~~a welcome message, write your own or copy from somewhere else, for example Welcome to the WikiProject Disability, aiming to organize, expand, clean up, and improve articles related to Disability. If you would like to participate, you can start by joining the project below and/or contribute to the discussion on the talk page.
~~add categories Category:WikiProject Disability and Category:Society WikiProjects
~~you could add a category tree code: <categorytree mode=pages>Disability</categorytree>
~~There is a guide at Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Guide/WikiProject for other sections to add.
~~ ~~When you have created a main page, you can create a WikiProject banner at Template:WikiProject Disability. When the banner and its categories has been created, you can add the banner to the talk page of Disability related articles, and then you can add Popular pages, a statistics table and such to your main page. Bib (talk) 22:47, 10 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I've taken the first step! Wikipedia:WikiProject Disability is no longer a redlink! I'll continue the next steps later - I have to venture out into the meatworld for a while. Please sign up and help us build a great project.Roger (talk) 08:01, 11 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Pageview stats[edit]

After a recent request, I added WikiProject Olympics/Paralympics to the list of projects to compile monthly pageview stats for. The data is the same used by http://stats.grok.se/en/ but the program is different, and includes the aggregate views from all redirects to each page. The stats are at Wikipedia:WikiProject Olympics/Paralympics/Popular pages.

The page will be updated monthly with new data. The edits aren't marked as bot edits, so they will show up in watchlists. You can view more results, request a new project be added to the list, or request a configuration change for this project using the toolserver tool. If you have any comments or suggestions, please let me know. Thanks! Mr.Z-man 22:50, 1 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Nations; and DYKs[edit]

For the past few days, I've been working on doing brief articles for every nation's participation in the Paralympics. Where the country has had very few competitors, I usually include full results. (For example: Benin at the Paralympics.) For others, I provide a brief overview. (For example: Mexico at the Paralympics.) I've finished Africa and the Americas, and I'm working on Asia.
Over recent days, I've also submitted three new articles for DYK: Rhodesia at the 1960 Summer Paralympics; Said Gomez (visually impaired runner, and sole Panamanian Paralympic medallist); and Edward Maalouf (handcyclist, and sole Lebanese Paralympic medallist). If you want to help draw more attention to the Paralympics, such articles are fairly easy to do, using the IPC database. Aridd (talk) 11:03, 11 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Great work, on tons of articles. Bib (talk) 17:38, 16 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Bib! I've just written Ukraine at the Paralympics (one of the last ones which hadn't been written yet) and submitted it for a DYK. Aridd (talk) 14:20, 20 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Paralympics articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release[edit]

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Paralympics articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Sunday, November 14th.

We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of November, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

If you have already provided feedback, we deeply appreciate it. For the Wikipedia 1.0 editorial team, SelectionBot 16:35, 6 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Swedish wheelchair curler Glenn Ikonen[edit]

Does anybody know if Glenn Ikonen received the bronze medal at the 2010 Paralympics wheelchair curling event in Vancouver, even though he had been disqualified? The International Paralympic Committee's results section says he is a bronze medal winner. [2] I wonder if that information is correct? Bib (talk) 15:46, 25 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Greece at the 2006 Games?[edit]

I'm not sure Greece actually competed in 2006, despite the existence of the article Greece at the 2006 Winter Paralympics. I've raised my concerns here. If anyone would like to take a look, if you agree, I would recommend removing all content from the article and transforming it into a redirect to Greece at the Paralympics; and editing Greece's Paralympics infobox accordingly. Aridd (talk) 10:24, 23 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

new article alerts[edit]

I've noticed pages like Daniel Adler and Andrew Pozzi are appearing on Wikipedia:WikiProject Olympics/Paralympics/New articles (the real data is here). I think this is because the pattern rules (User:AlexNewArtBot/Paralympic) are matching the empty infobox line "paralympics = " found in these articles. I've tried to fix this by adding a restriction to eliminate "/paralympics *= *$/". John Vandenberg (chat) 04:57, 7 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

IPC broken links[edit]

165 links to www.paralympic.org/release/Main_Sections_Menu/Sports/Results/paralympics_events.html appear to all be broken. John Vandenberg (chat) 09:24, 11 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Argh. 820 links to www.paralympic.org/release/ are all broken. I'm going to start by fixing the 35 to pages under "http://www.paralympic.org/release/Main_Sections_Menu/Paralympic_Games/Past_Games/" John Vandenberg (chat) 08:07, 12 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Those 35 are fixed, except for the athlete profiles which appear to have been deleted in their website re-organisation. John Vandenberg (chat) 10:22, 12 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I think many of these can be fixed by a bot, replacing:

http://www.paralympic.org/release/Main_Sections_Menu/Sports/Results/paralympics_results.html
http://www.paralympic.org/release/Main_Sections_Menu/Sports/Results/paralympics_search.html

with these(respective):

http://www.paralympic.org/Sport/Results/results.html
http://www.paralympic.org/Sport/Results/search.html

(Note "Sports" -> "Sport") John Vandenberg (chat) 10:28, 12 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I've created {{IPC profile}} and {{IPC event}}, and converted many of the broken links to use these templates. There are 188 more broken links under Special:LinkSearch/www.paralympic.org/release/Main_Sections_Menu/Sports/Results/. I will create templates for these too, and automatically fix them. Once that is done, there will be about 149 broken links remaining. John Vandenberg (chat) 14:21, 2 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I've also created {{IPC medals}}. There are 48 broken links under Special:LinkSearch/www.paralympic.org/release/Main_Sections_Menu/Sports/Results/, and 180 broken links under Special:LinkSearch/www.paralympic.org/release/. These will need to be fixed by hand. John Vandenberg (chat) 06:18, 4 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

2018 Winter Paralympics[edit]

Photos of paralympians without an article[edit]

Recently there are a lot of new photos added to commons at commons:Category:Images from the Australian Paralympic Committee, where the subjects in the photographs dont have a Wikipedia article. However this problem is not unique to the Australian images. Quickly looking through commons:Category:2008 Summer Paralympics, I see quite a few photographs which dont link to Wikipedia and many dont have an English Wikipedia article yet. Australian Wheelchair Basketball Players[edit]

About 40 to 50 stub articles were added to Category:Paralympic wheelchair basketball players of Australia. It would be really great if people could help improve these articles, possibly get two or three long enough to get up to Did you know length so they could appear on the main page. :) Most of the articles are about players, men and women, from the 1996, 2000, 2004 and 2008 squads. this link and this linkmay have some sources that could help improve these articles to get them up to DYK length. :) LauraHale 2011-09-09T11:49:49‎

Help getting some Paralympic articles Good Article ready[edit]

Hi. I've been working on editing a few articles about Australian Paralympians and the Australian Paralympic movement. These articles are:

These articles are all in decent shape and are well cited. Two of them have a number of good pictures. It would be really fantastic if some one could come in and help improve these articles to get them up to a place where they could be nominated for Good Article. If anyone is interested in doing that, it would be really appreciated. :) There are very few articles about disabled athletes that have become GAs. :) --LauraHale (talk) 08:14, 12 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Winter images[edit]

The Australian Paralympic Committee has uploaded 20+ images of the Winter Paralympics. The images are not well described, as the process of identifying the subjects is time consuming. See commons:Special:ListFiles/Tony.naar. They can upload many more images if they are confident that we're able to identify, catalogue, and use these images. John Vandenberg (chat) 05:01, 26 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yet another IPC website reorganisation[edit]

The IPC have reorganised their website *again*. The native search results page uses an iframe, which makes it difficult to find a URL for each individual event and athlete. However the search results page can be used without iframes by using this link. I've updated Template:IPC profile, Template:IPC medals, and Template:IPC event, but I can't figure out how to get Template:IPC event results to work properly. There are many many articles about Paralympians, especially recent ones, which don't contain this template, and will need to be fixed by hand or modified to use the template. Graham87 09:12, 15 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Template issue[edit]

A user has pointed out, correctly, that the page Rhodesia at the 1972 Summer Paralympics displays the wrong flag. I've looked into it as best I could. Normally, the Paralympics countries templates automatically adjust the flag based on the year. It works fine for other countries, and it works fine for the "Rhodesia at the Olympics" template, but not for its Paralympics template. I can't see any difference in the coding, so I don't know what's causing the problem, or how it can be fixed. (For reference, here are Rhodesia's flags for different years.) Aridd (talk) 10:57, 15 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I've fixed it by editing Template:Country flag IOC alias RHO, it was only set up to handle flags through 1964, when Rhodesia last competed in the Olympics. I've extended it through 1972, although I'm not sure the flag for 1968 is correct since the country switched flags part way through those games (the flag changed on Nov 11, the games ran from Nov 4 to Nov 13). — jwillbur 01:10, 16 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! (For 1968, it'll just have to do.) Aridd (talk) 11:32, 18 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Categorising Paralympic competitors by Paralympic class[edit]

I made two proposals on WikiProject Disability's talk page about new categories for people with disabilities. I won't implement the second proposal due to comments there, but the first one is directly relevant to this project: it involves the categorisation of Paralympic competitors by their Paralympic class (intellectual disability, vision impairment, wheelchair, etc). What do you think of this idea? Please comment over there to keep discussion in one place. Graham87 01:26, 13 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I've finally created the category tree at Category:Paralympic competitors by disability category. I also split Category:Blind athletes into Category:Sportspeople with a vision impairment and Category:Paralympic competitors with a vision impairment. Any help filling the new categories out would be appreciated. Graham87 11:30, 18 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Please take a look at, and feel free to contribute to, the draft article on Paralympic classification in my Sandbox. In order to properly assign the correct categories to the athletes articles we need to have a firm grasp of the classification system. I hope this article will help in that respect. Roger (talk) 13:50, 20 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Nice work! We already have articles about some individual classifications in athletics, swimming and wheelchair basketball. When these articles were created, I argued on the HOPAU mailing list that these articles should be merged, with one page for each sport at the very most. Graham87 15:46, 20 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I looked at Disability sport classification and quite frankly it's not very good. I'm afraid the one-liner quotes from Jane Buckley (whoever that is) describing the different classes is quite poor. The article also includes a whole lot of material that is not relevant to its title. Lists of records and notable competitors belong in (and are already included in many of) the articles about the events or teams, not in the classification system article. I think my draft should replace that article as soon as it's ready. I'm afraid the Aussie-centric orientation of the stub articles about individual classes is not acceptable. The overwhelming reliance on only one source, the article by Jane Buckley, is also a problem. Roger (talk) 16:22, 20 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The article is a mess because of a merge proposal that suggested all the different classifications across all sports be put into one article. It needs a complete and utter overhaul, with an acknowledgement that individual classification articles are needed and should be linked to. (Actually, it needs a tier system of main article, classification by sport/type, and then specific disability classification articles.) Don't have the time or inclination to fix it myself at the moment. Maybe in late April. : / --LauraHale (talk) 21:00, 20 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
That is your opinion, Laura, not a universally held view. I tend to agree with Roger here, and I think the sandbox version would be an adequate replacement for the disability sport classification article. I think we could have articles about the classification system in various sports (e.g. swimming), but we don't need an article about each classification. There are already good lists of world records (e.g. List of IPC world records in swimming and List of IPC world records in athletics). Graham87 01:56, 21 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Well Graham, that is your opinion that we do not need an article on the specific classifications. At the moment, we have them and they could be greatly improved. I've talked to some people inside the AIS who have academic and IPC related sources that would be really good in bulking up the articles. Beyond the information on what the specifically disability classifications mean, there are things like world records attached to them, which ones compete at which international events, how different federations treat them, who is in charge of establishing the classification inside a specific sport, different times and distances that indicate excellence, etc. The IPC has considered tweaking these again recently, which is going to impact several sports where they are involved with classification. Some of these have an interesting history as it relates to accusations of cheating and inclusion at the games. Individually, they almost all certainly meet notability requirements too. When the Paralympics are on and people here some one one a gold medal in the S12 classification, they will probably Google S12 instead of swimming disability classifications. These articles also get views. See S12, 1 point player, S8, S7 as examples. You're free not to work on them and free to improve the main article. No one is suggesting otherwise. They need a better broad general summary and the main article needs a complete overhaul. --LauraHale (talk) 02:49, 21 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Just to be clear, I'm not denying the sandbox version isn't great and shouldn't be used. I'm referring to the structure for daughter articles. --LauraHale (talk) 02:50, 21 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The sandbox, with fewer than half the sports' basic text completed so far and without any tables, charts or images, is already over 40KB. It really cannot be a single comprehensive article.
In some cases, such as track and field or cycling, the full detail is long enough to stand as separate articles. Other sports that have fewer classes and/or less complex classification systems would end up as sections in the sport articles. The overall "Paralympic Classification" article would be a summarised version. Basically as we 'go up and down the hierarchy' the articles or sections lose or gain detail. The way I've arranged the sandbox content with varying levels of bulleting makes it fairly easy to change the ammount of detail in each case - for example, in the top article "Paralympic classification", basically only the first level content will be used.
I hope my 'hierarchical system' makes sense. Roger (talk) 05:37, 21 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I posted a proposal at Category talk:Paralympic competitors by disability category#Consistent terminolgy. Roger (talk) 14:11, 20 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Paratriathlon draft in my sandbox.[edit]

I have started a draft article for Paratriathlon, please feel free to participate in the article creation process. I particularly need independently sourced material- so far everything is from the ITU and IPC. Roger (talk) 08:08, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

South Africa at the 2012 Summer Paralympics[edit]

I have just started the article South Africa at the 2012 Summer Paralympics with yesterday's announcement of the full team. Please help to get the article into shape - I'm not sure if I have the templates and other bells & whistles correct. Roger (talk) 09:09, 21 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I need help please. The schedule for the SA team's events has been published. The next step is to create event tables as has been done in Sweden at the 2012 Summer Paralympics, but I'm useless at creating tables. European Paralympian's names in titles[edit]

Hi, I realise that there's some opposition to European Latin-alphabet (French, Spanish, Czech) names among some sports fans, but I'd hope that isn't the case with those interested in Paralympics. A request then that Category:Paralympic competitors by sport BLPs such as Jose Pampano be at José Pámpano the same other category:Spanish sportspeople, and so on per Wikipedia:Naming conventions (use English) "If this happens, follow the conventions of the language in which this entity is most often talked about (German for German politicians," etc. Thanks. In ictu oculi (talk) 04:19, 24 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

To follow up on this I proposed Talk:Sebastien Barc be renamed to his French spelling, and a general principle that Category:Paralympic competitors by sport should be given correct spelling, as with any other olympic athlete, and there was unanimous support. I already moved 6 BLPs: Adrián Paz Velázquez María de los Ángeles Ortíz Jón Halldórsson (athlete) Britta Jänicke Andreas Müller (athlete) Matthias Schröder, because there were complications with disambiguation, merging duplicates or very different names. ‎
The remaining bios that are at accentless-website spelling titles, but with correct WP:OPENPARA are Isabelle Foerder Reinhold Boetzel, Oduver Daza, Jose Monteiro (athlete), Anibal Bello, Jose Villarreal, Sebastian Baldassarri, Ariadne Hernandez, Salvador Hernandez, Mario Santillan, Maria Salas, Lucia Sosa, Nicolas Ledezma, Mauro Maximo de Jesus, Jesus Lucero, Moises Beristain, Angeles Ortiz, Ettiam Calderon, Lazaro Raschid Aguilar, Adrian Iznaga, Angel Jimenez, Ana Jimenez, Luis Felipe Gutierrez, Leonardo Diaz (Paralympian) Fernando Gonzalez (athlete), Antonio Souza, Joerg Frischmann, Diosmani Gonzalez. These are now free for anyone to move to full German or Spanish names without complications in view of the conclusion of Talk:Sebastien Barc. In ictu oculi (talk) 11:04, 9 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Isabelle Foerder appears to be a false positive and should stay at oe. I have moved the other German athletes mentioned. Agathoclea (talk) 10:05, 11 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for checking, yes Foerder is a false positive. The Cuban, Venezuelan athletes there's less question, all are sourced. In ictu oculi (talk) 01:40, 12 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The reference on José Villarreal went dead. Agathoclea (talk) 05:08, 12 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes but still cached. Added a duplicate ref and moved BLP to Venezuelan spelling. In ictu oculi (talk) 12:40, 12 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Olympic/Paralympic WikiCup?[edit]

Would anyone be interested in setting up and / or participating in an Olympic/Paralympic WikiCup? Modeled kind of after the Bacon Wiki Cup? Have it run from say a week before the opening ceremony for the Olympics and a week after the Paralympics? I can probably offer two prizes: Some book about the Olympics, a print of an Olympic related commons image, and a Pediapress book.

Disability classifications on nation articles[edit]

Someone has been removing the disability classification section from nation articles, on the grounds of "irrelevance". I'm in two minds about that, but if anyone wants to discuss it... Aridd (talk) 20:52, 17 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I originally added a basic version of the section for use on Great Britain articles to help get them through GA reviews, I can see the argument against having such a copy and pasted section in each article but I think the average reader would need/want such an explaination so I think at the very least a link to Paralympic Games#Classification should be provided somewhere in each article - Basement12 (T.C) 13:01, 13 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Covering the Olympics/Paralympics live and in person for Wikipedia and other WMF projects[edit]

Hi. For the 2012 Summer Paralympics, two Wikipedians (myself and User:Hawkeye7) are going to London to cover the Games with press credentials acquired through Wikimedia Australia. Covering these Games successfully on Wikinews and Wikipedia provides a fantastic opportunity to use this as leverage to get the Commonwealth Games and the Olympic Games in the next few years. The more successful we are at doing on the ground Original Reporting that coincides with Wikipedia article improvements and getting pictures in advance, the better we can use it to get additional access because Wikipedia and Wikinews will have a track record of success. In order to do this, we need your help on Wikinews. The Wikinews part is being organised as Wikinews:Paralympic Games. The main focus needs to be writing Original Reporting. We need people to help copy edit, to take original reporting notes and write them into Wikinews articles, who can hunt down acceptable licenses for pictures to use on articles. (IPC policy only allows a CC-BY-NC kind of license at the events. Not sure accreditation wise we'll be good to go with getting our own images in any case.) We also need people who can help with reviewing. Any assistance you can provide would be very much appreciated. Please sign up at Wikinews:Paralympic Games. :) --LauraHale (talk) 22:18, 22 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'm just a little concerned about the almost exclusively Australian POV that has predominated so far in the activity of your group. Are you sure your group can "globalise" your POV? Roger (talk) 07:00, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Event tables - help please[edit]

I'm working on creating the tables for all events in South Africa at the 2012 Summer Paralympics. I have not found any examples from which to copy the layout of tables for cycling and wheelcair tennis. I'm also quite intimidated by the thought of creating tables for swimming. It's really complicated trying to figure out which events have heats and quarter final and semis and which have fewer rounds. I need some help please. Roger (talk) 07:06, 21 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I've done the cycling tables and I'm about to do the tennis. Swimming should be easy enough to work out with the help of the Schedule on the official site, but it isn't the end of the world if you leave in an extra round, someone will fix it easily enough when the event occurs - Basement12 (T.C) 09:19, 21 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! It looks like you're the "fix it" person around here. Roger (talk) 12:18, 21 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I've started creating templates in my sandbox. Some sports may have to wait, for example in boccia I have no idea how many individuals are in each group at the first stage. JoshMartini007 (talk) 19:39, 27 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Transferring the momentum from Olympics to Paralympics[edit]

We need to find ways to capitalise on the high energy of the past few weeks in the coverage of the Olympics. How do we get these active editors to "come over to the crip side" and do the same for Paralympics 2012? Roger (talk) 07:04, 12 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

With great difficulty I'd imagine. A good start would be to ensure that each nation's 2012 Paralympics article is listed in a see also section of the equivalent Olympic article, which will also require confirming the participation of each nation and turing the red links blue at Template:NPCin2012SummerParalympics - Basement12 (T.C) 12:55, 13 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Another idea to draw attention would be to getting some featured content on the main page. Their isn't a suitable Paralympic featured article but we have a number of featured lists that could appear. I've listed them at User:The Rambling Man/tfl but if any one feels up to writing the necessary blurb and submitting at Wikipedia:Today's featured list/submissions that could speed the process along. - Basement12 (T.C) 13:23, 13 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I've started with the convenience templates side. See Category:2012 Summer Olympics convenience templates. Will save a lot of effort, edit conflicts and storage space. HandsomeFella (talk) 19:44, 27 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Naming standard issue[edit]

Hello project.

I've come across a naming problem. Look at this:

Which way should they be named?

HandsomeFella (talk) 19:36, 27 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I would say "Football 5-a-side" because that's the way the main articles and the Official Paralympics websites name it. There is also "Football 7-a-side" these two events are treated as variants of Paralympic association football. Go ahead and change the 2004 article. Roger (talk) 07:46, 28 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Done ... that and a bunch of similar artefacts. HandsomeFella (talk) 15:19, 28 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

2012 Paralympic Event Templates[edit]

I've created templates for all of the events in my sandbox if anyone would like to use them in the "X at the 2012 Paralympics" articles. Of course if you want to use your own you are welcome to do so as well. JoshMartini007 (talk) 18:32, 28 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

That's great! It's easy to see which events have "N/A" rounds! There's just one problem - according to WP:MOSHEAD images must not be used in section headings. Quite a lot of the articles do, but it's wrong. I once saw an explanation that it interferes with screen readers correctly identifying headings as such. Roger (talk) 18:52, 28 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Images in headers cause screen readers to read the headings out rather strangely (e.g. "Archery - Paralympic pictogram.svg Archery". They also cause the section headings listed in edit summaries to come out rather weirdly, like "/* 30px Archery */". Graham87 07:45, 29 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed, there was a discussion about this at WikiProject Olympics recently and their use has now been removed from the style guidelines for Olympic/Paralympic nation articles - Basement12 (T.C) 08:55, 29 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Well I've removed them, but not until after I've done over half the pages. I guess I'll remove them over the period of the games. JoshMartini007 (talk) 21:55, 29 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Event article organization[edit]

Is there a consensus on how we want to organize the event articles? I've seen three different approaches, there may be more:

Personally I like the first option, the other two result in an unmanageable number of articles with a lot of duplicate information. What do you all think? — jwillbur 03:10, 29 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Ideally we should have a separate article for each medal event, just as we do for the Olympics, linked to from the main "Sport" at the 2012 Summer Olympics article (I think this is what you mean with your third option), I don't see how that results in any duplicate information or why it is unmanageable. Lumping all classifications together in one article could result in unmanageably long articles and having both a men's 100 metres article and a men's 100 metres T11 article would indeed result in duplicate information - Basement12 (T.C) 08:50, 29 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with User:Basement12, each event should have it's own article - lumping them together will result in enormously long pages. Conversely I don't see any reason why a large number of articles should be unmanagable - that's what Navboxes and Categories are for. Roger (talk) 07:53, 30 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Large number of Athletics redlinks[edit]

Many event articles under Athletics at the 2012 Summer Paralympics still need to be created - particularly the Women's events. Once the games begin it might be hard to keep up - we need to try to get as much preliminary work done as possible before the flood of results and news starts. Roger (talk) 07:50, 28 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

A lot of the 2008 links are still red as well, unfortunatley it's a case of not enough people and too much to do. Event articles are easy enough to create once the events begin, other than a list of athletes (most of which would be redlinks in any case0 and the dates of events they'd contain little information yet anyway. When creating teh articles intros and infoboxes can be copied over from similar pages and modified and lists of athletes and times/distances can be copied in from the official results pages and formatted into tables without too much trouble. What does need to be done is the creation of a medal table like the one at Athletics at the 2008 Summer Paralympics#Men's events - Basement12 (T.C) 09:35, 28 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
There are now no redlinks in the article (the pages generally existed, they'd just become a bit 'decoupled' Fayedizard (talk) 18:45, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I have noticed this with a lot of the previous Paralympic Games. Rome 1960 to Sydney 2000 have a lot of redlinks for athletics events. I have done the Sydney 2000 men's 200m events and haven't had much time to do the rest due to my busy daily schedule. I will try, if I can, finish what I've started. SarahTHunter (talk) 18:15, 16 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

British Paralympic gold medallists[edit]

I've wikified the IPC database of British Paralympic gold medallists and placed it at User:Violetriga/British Paralympic gold medallists. This may help identify articles that we need to create for the competitors, events, or years. Do with it what you will! violet/riga [talk] 21:11, 29 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Once it is cleaned up, those leaderboards would be a good addition to Great Britain at the Paralympics, as is done at Australia at the Paralympics.
The IPC database is full of ambiguous names and duplicates. If you have identified a change needed in the IPC database, let user:Graham87 know, or join the HOPAU mailing list. John Vandenberg (chat) 17:03, 6 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Boccia[edit]

I happen to be at Boccia_at_the_2012_Summer_Paralympics today - so I'll probably be poking that article later - while I'm there is there anything I should know about image rights and the like? i.e. if I take a picture in the arena, that picture is mine to upload right? Or will I run into some strange olympic rules? Fayedizard (talk) 06:59, 6 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You can see a discussion that we had over Olympic images at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Olympics/Archive 13#Licencing of images taken inside venues? - Basement12 (T.C) 08:52, 6 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much :) Fayedizard (talk) 18:54, 6 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Controversies at the 2012 Summer Paralympics[edit]

With Jody Cundy's removal after a misstart to the original ineligibility of Victoria Arlen with the removal of three Jordanian powerlifters to Channel 4's advert break during the parade to NBC's non-broadcast of the games, what is the possibility of having a page similar to the Olympic counterpart, I probably take it might not be likely especially the decision to refuse Cundy a restart was controversial and have been the talk of the games so far. Donnie Park (talk) 17:37, 1 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Could you please restate your point(s) clearly and list each one separately. The monster of a run-on sentence you wrote above is very hard to parse - I can't figure out how many distinct "controversies" you have mentioned. A bulleted or numbered list would really help. Roger (talk) 15:52, 2 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I will mention it in bullet points as requested as follows as these are examples, all of these are sourcable
  • Advert break on Channel 4's coverage of the opening ceremony
  • NBC's non-coverage of the games
  • Victoria Arlen's eligibility
  • Removal of two Jordanian powerlifter from the game
  • Jody Cundy disqualification
  • Oscar Pistorius's remark over Alan Oliveira after he finished 2nd in the 200m race
  • Not sure if that count but George Osborn's reception when he presented medals (which you can see on Youtube)
If this doesn't get through, then I am not bothered. Donnie Park (talk) 00:01, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I think it's worth having - do we want to take the structure direct from the olympic counterpart? Fayedizard (talk) 18:35, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, I've gone ahead a put something in the sandbox Fayedizard (talk) 18:52, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
An hour later, it's a bit more expanded and vaguely looking like an article - It could really do with someone looking at the Oscar Pistorius stuff, and also someone putting all the relevant project boxes on the talk page, but I'm going for a biscuit and a cup of coco now... Fayedizard (talk) 20:05, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The Pistorius story is presented in a very one-sided way. The IPC is on record admitting that Pistorius contacted them six weeks before the Paralympics about the issue of excessive blade length. The IPC are willing to meet with him to discuss it after the games, thereby they have accepted that his argument is not without merit. See http://www.iol.co.za/sport/ipc-considers-action-against-oscar-1.1375648 I hope some balance and sanity can be brought to this controversy, instead of the rather gratuitous "Oscar-bashing" so evident in some media. Roger (talk) 22:38, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Actually I copy-pasted that one straight from the Pistorius article (with notes to make sure the right template is used...) I notice that you've done a bit of work since on the Pistorius article - would you be confortable transferring the information across? I suspect you're a lot more well informed on the story than me by now (I was concentrating on just expanding the article... Fayedizard (talk) 09:34, 5 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
More generally - are the any controversies that have been missed? and would anyone object with the article going to mainspace once the Pistorius stuff is fixed up a little? Fayedizard (talk) 09:34, 5 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I graduated this out of the sandbox today to Controversies_at_the_2012_Paralympic_Games - if there are any comments that would be great - I might even see if this is a good time to learn how the DYK process works..Fayedizard (talk) 20:09, 7 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Medalist leaderboards[edit]

I've been building List of multiple Paralympic gold medalists at a single Games, as it provides many types of 'notability' statements that can be made on bios, "<nation> at the Summer Paralympics", "<year> .. medal table", and also in press releases. (I was hoping that Jacqueline Freney's seventh gold, if obtained, would put her at the top of one of those tables, however I have now completed the table for competitors with >= 7 gold medals, and she wont be able to knock the leaders of the top.)

It would be helpful if WikiProjects for each nation could be notified to create and improve bios of people on this list.

Are there any other leaderboards we should build?

The press and public are constantly looking for information about historical record holders, and that is our strength. John Vandenberg (chat) 16:56, 6 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

For the types of similar articles that have been made for the Olympics take a look at Template:Olympics statistics, it should be noted however that there has been some discussion at WT:OLY as to whether such pages are necessary, and if they are to what degree. One major problem with this kind of list is the application of a "Rank" column, it implies some sort of winner of a category we've decided should be counted up which starts getting into original research/synthesis territory quite quickly - Basement12 (T.C) 23:15, 6 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
But I do agree we should make an effort to turn the redlinks on that page blue and improve any that are stubs - Basement12 (T.C) 23:18, 6 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I think a Paralympic version of List of multiple Olympic gold medalists in one event would be very useful. I'm less keen on the other leaderboards that WP has for the Olympics. John Vandenberg (chat) 12:00, 8 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Finding usable photos[edit]

How does one search for photos to illustrate the hundreds of articles the past games has generated? Google search does not have a paramater for copyright status so it's very hard to use to find photos we are allowed to use. There are zillions of photos on the web but I don't know of a way to sort them by licence. Roger (talk) 08:12, 10 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The advanced search on Flickr [3] allows you to sort by license. You can then use Commons:User:Flickr upload bot to upload any you find to Commons - Basement12 (T.C) 08:41, 10 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Paralympic sport pictograms[edit]

Hello. Just wanted to warn those who may be interested that I have begun creating pictograms for the Paralympic sports, in the same manner as the free-licensed generic Olympic sport pictograms. As I post this, I have already uploaded pictograms for archery, athletics, boccia and wheelchair basketball; in the next days, I'll continue uploading more. You can find them in my Commons gallery. Competitors at both Summer and Winter games[edit]

It would be useful to have a list of people who have competed at both Summer and Winter games. We can use category intersection to start the list by finding people who are in Category:Summer Paralympic Games and Winter Paralympic Games. There are currently 35 people in that intersection. John Vandenberg (chat) 16:14, 13 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Support. I was looking for that list while editing Martina Willing's article yesterday.

IPC country flag alias templates[edit]

We currently have 18 aliases in Category:Country_flag_IPC_alias_templates, and our templates then fall back on IOC aliases (see code of Template:FlagIPCathlete) which are in Category:Country flag IOC alias templates. However the reason for these 18 Paralympic specific templates is not documented, and doesnt appear obvious. {{Country flag IPC alias NZL}} is the same as {{Country flag IOC alias NZL}}; {{Country flag IPC alias ITA}} is the same as {{Country flag IOC alias ITA}}. However, they arnt all the same. {{Country flag IPC alias EUN}} is different from {{Country flag IOC alias EUN}}. Does the IPC use the same set of aliases defined in List of IOC country codes? (I believe it does!) Why would the Paralympics need different flags? John Vandenberg (chat) 15:00, 13 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

There are always differences between the IOC and IPC versions of the templates, but you have to look in the edit window to see it. A separate IPC version is needed if a country has ever used a different flag for the Paralympics vs. the Olympics. Most of them are needed because the countries used a different flag at the 1980 games due to the boycott (see New Zealand at the 1980 Summer Olympics vs. New Zealand at the 1980 Summer Paralympics). — jwillbur 17:40, 13 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Management of the category "paralympic athletes"[edit]

Categories that should be added in the article of a paralympic athlete? For esample. All agree that Category:Paralympic athletes of Australia is inside Category:Australian athletes. Moreover, the athlete should not be in the Category:Sprinters but in Category: Australian sprinters. Ergo in an article in the categories "athletes" and "event" should not be added. --Kasper2006 (talk) 12:11, 15 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If I understand what you're saying correctly, I agree with you. Articles should be in the most specific categories possible, and there's no need for them to be in a general parent category when a more specific subcategory would also be applicable. Graham87 06:16, 16 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

New category[edit]

Popular pages tool update[edit]

As of January, the popular pages tool has moved from the Toolserver to Wikimedia Tool Labs. The code has changed significantly from the Toolserver version, but users should notice few differences. Please take a moment to look over your project's list for any anomalies, such as pages that you expect to see that are missing or pages that seem to have more views than expected. Note that unlike other tools, this tool aggregates all views from redirects, which means it will typically have higher numbers. (For January 2014 specifically, 35 hours of data is missing from the WMF data, which was approximated from other dates. For most articles, this should yield a more accurate number. However, a few articles, like ones featured on the Main Page, may be off).

Web tools, to replace the ones at tools:~alexz/pop, will become available over the next few weeks at toollabs:popularpages. All of the historical data (back to July 2009 for some projects) has been copied over. The tool to view historical data is currently partially available (assessment data and a few projects may not be available at the moment). The tool to add new projects to the bot's list is also available now (editing the configuration of current projects coming soon). Unlike the previous tool, all changes will be effective immediately. OAuth is used to authenticate users, allowing only regular users to make changes to prevent abuse. A visible history of configuration additions and changes is coming soon. Once tools become fully available, their toolserver versions will redirect to Labs.

If you have any questions, want to report any bugs, or there are any features you would like to see that aren't currently available on the Toolserver tools, see the updated FAQ or contact me on my talk page. Mr.Z-bot (talk) (for Mr.Z-man) 05:20, 23 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Paralympic Challenge Proposal[edit]

Per WP:NOLYMPICS, all Paralympic Athletes that had won a medal are presumed notable. And looking at the list of athletes who won a medal, there are a lot of red links. I did a little test and it revealed half of them have a lot of coverage in secondary sources. I've created some random red links with all the sources I could find, there was one GA-class, two B-class, one C-class, one start-class, and 2 stub-class.

I've been having this idea of having something like a Paralympic Challenge where it is sort of like a backlog drive. In a month, users have to create Paralympic articles. At the end, they receive barnstars and there are more articles in Wikipedia. To maintain quality, articles have to be above stub class.

Classification assessment score[edit]

I have just updated Paratriathlon classification with the new classification system (introduced during 2014 season). The source I used at Triathlon.org] speaks of "classification assessment score" without explaining the concept or linking to any other page where it might be explained. It seems to me that the score system is the result of the IPC's classification research program that has been ongoing for several years. We probably need a new article about this score system - but who knows where to find the relevant information about it? Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 08:56, 1 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Swimming has had a points-based classification system since the early 90s. Cycling went to points-based classification after Beijing. Both the swimming and cycling classification manuals usefully give indicative impairment profiles as well as points ranges, tho, where current paratriathlon classification manual just gives points. As an indication, single above knee amputees are classifying PT2. Most single below knee amputees, and most people with unilateral arm impairment, are classifying PT4 (the ones who don't may have additional impairments that aren't obvious - in the case of one athlete, I know that to be the case). Impairments causing muscle weakness, reduced range of movement, spasticity, incoordination - can classify as anything depending on severity. Sportygeek (talk) 04:48, 14 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Rio Paralympics[edit]

I could possibly be heading over to Rio, I have accreditation to the games but depending on a grant application. What photographs would the Paralympic contributors like from the games? What articles do you think that need to be improved/expanded or created? I'm happy to help out in getting these done. Bidgee (talk) 13:50, 15 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Bidgee, fingers crossed for your grant application. We need almost anything and everything. Most paralympians do not have photos, but some are more readily available than others. Certain countries produce more images of their athletes, Australia have a history of being involved in some excellent projects that allows us to use images of their sportspeople, and America and Russia release government images of their athletes which really helps. We are very low on images of swimmers, powerlifters, Boccia players, fencers, archers, sailing and judoka. But wide angle shots getting in large group of competitors, even when not competing would be great. Keep us updated. FruitMonkey (talk) 15:05, 15 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Missing Road Cycling Results[edit]

I was looking at the article Cycling at the 2016 Summer Paralympics. I noticed that there were no results for the Mixed Team Relay Class T1–4. Invite to the African Destubathon[edit]

Hi. Members here may be interested in participating in the African Destubathon which starts on October 15. Africa currently has over 37,000 stubs and badly needs a quality improvement editathon/contest to flesh out basic stubs. There are proposed substantial prizes to give to editors who do the most geography, wildlife and women articles, and planned smaller prizes for doing to most destubs for each of the 53 African countries, so should be enjoyable! So it would be a good chance to win something for improving stubs on African paralympians, particularly female ones, but also male. Even if contests aren't your thing we would be grateful if you could consider destubbing a few African articles during the drive to help the cause and help reduce the massive 37,000 + stub count, of which many are rated high importance (think Regions of countries etc). If you're interested in competing or just loosely contributing a few expanded articles on African paralympians and committees etc, please add your name to the Contestants/participants section. Diversity of work from a lot of people will make this that bit more special. Thanks.♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:47, 5 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Popular pages report[edit]

We – Community Tech – are happy to announce that the Popular pages bot is back up-and-running (after a one year hiatus)! You're receiving this message because your WikiProject or task force is signed up to receive the popular pages report. Every month, Community Tech bot will post at Wikipedia:WikiProject Olympics/Paralympics/Archive 1/Popular pages with a list of the most-viewed pages over the previous month that are within the scope of WikiProject Olympics.

We've made some enhancements to the original report. Here's what's new:

  • The pageview data includes both desktop and mobile data.
  • The report will include a link to the pageviews tool for each article, to dig deeper into any surprises or anomalies.
  • The report will include the total pageviews for the entire project (including redirects).

We're grateful to Mr.Z-man for his original Mr.Z-bot, and we wish his bot a happy robot retirement. Just as before, we hope the popular pages reports will aid you in understanding the reach of WikiProject Olympics, and what articles may be deserving of more attention. If you have any questions or concerns please contact us at m:User talk:Community Tech bot.

Warm regards, the Community Tech Team 17:16, 17 May 2017 (UTC)

There will be over $4000 in prizes to win, including Amazon vouchers and paid subscriptions. If you think you'd be interested in contributing new articles on Women paralympians or sportspeople during this month wherever please sign up in the participants section. If you're not interested in prize money yourself but are willing to participate and raise money to buy books about women for others to use, this is also fine. Infobox medal count is zero[edit]

In articles like New Zealand at the Paralympics, China at the Paralympics, and similarly for almost every other country I looked at, the medal count in the infobox is zero, no matter how many medals they won. Maybe you should just remove that field if you don't want to use it, rather that assert the falsehood of zero medals. Art LaPella (talk) 04:08, 1 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Missing women Olympic medallists[edit]

Hello. I've gathered a list of the missing women Olympic medallists for Women in Red and discovered there are only 16 left. I wanted to also look at the Paralympics as well, but I feel discouraged as I believe that there would be too many to list (ranging in the 100s). Since the Olympics are happening, maybe we could focus on these 16 missing women. I also would gather a list on the missing Olympic women participants as well, but I believe that list would be too long as well. 5-a-side football qualification for the 2020 Summer Paralympics[edit]

Hi. The 2018 IBSA Blind Football World Championships took place in Madrid this June. I went to a few of the games with the goal of getting pictures for articles about sportspeople, countries and teams as Paralympic image licensing during the Games means you cannot legally upload photos to Commons. :( Need to get photos before hand as a result. Not specifically paralympics, but parasport ... I've just been doing some work on "India's blade runner" Kiran Kanoji and can't find an article about running blades in general - there's Mechanics of Oscar Pistorius's running blades about OP's blades in particular, and the general Prosthesis which has a section Prosthesis#Oscar_Pistorius within Prosthesis#Prosthetic_enhancement, although that section is more about robotics etc rather than sophisticated blades. There doesn't seem to be anything in the encyclopedia about running blades in general. Am I missing something, or would someone here like to start an article? Paralympic categories for swimming and athletics?[edit]

Hello, I've been thinking for the last few days about having Paralympic athletes and swimmers to have some subcategories? For example, "Paralympic sprinters", "Paralympic long jumpers" in the Paralympic athletes category and for the swimming examples, "Paralympic breaststroke swimmers" and "Paralympic backstroke swimmers". I'm not thinking of categorising them further into male and female as there could be an imbalance on the number of entries for the subcategories (I believe there could be more male Paralympic athletes than female Paralympic athletes). However the swimmers are in the male and female swimmers for their swimming stroke categories (I did go into slight trouble for making too many redlinks for the country subcategories - it was pointed out to me yesterday that there had been an issue with categorising country subcategories about ten years ago due to overcategorising, I never knew anything about this and I sincerely apologised to the person who told me all about it without my knowledge). Like I said, this is a suggestion and I wanted to know if anybody agrees or disagrees with the idea. SarahTHunter (talk) 14:39, 3 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Israli paralympic female competitor Michal Escapa (IPC profile) is also a swimmer?[edit]

Since at the dawn of the Paralympic Games there was no precision in reporting the results of the competitions, the Israeli athlete Michal Escapa was indicated with the Italian nationality and without prename (and so she is mentioned in the International Paralympic Committee[1] of the Italian Paralympic Committee[2] web sites) for the reports of the Swimming at the 1964 Summer Paralympics where she won two bronze medals, simply reported as Escapa and not as Michal Escapa.[3][4] However, as can be seen from a 1968 Israeli newspaper reporting an interview with the athlete, she was the same athlete who had won medals in swimming and table tennis in Tokyo 1964.[5]

Template error (fixed) – Goalball[edit]

Can someone have the data accessed by template D3 corrected please, as it presently has the same data as D4? Was correct on 29 Aug 2021. Not sure who can correct. D3 is Game 11, Group D, EGY–TUR F match, D4 is Game 16, Group D, JPN–BRA F match.

Relates to Egypt women's national goalball team. Thank you! Q8682 (talk) 10:33, 27 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Paralympic swimming article is at the wrong title[edit]

I have just reviewed a new biography article where the subject is described as a "gold medalist Paralympic swimmer" only to find out that he had never been to the Paralympic Games but had competed only at national level. Then I followed the link and discovered that the article at Paralympic swimming is actually about para-swimming in general and not, as the title implies, swimming at the Paralympics. This type of confusion between sport for disabled people in general and the actual Paralympic Games is a problem that does real harm to the cause of dignity amd equality for people with disabilities. Shooting at the 2020 Summer Paralympics[edit]

A few of the mixed events for the shooting at the 2020 Summer Paralympics are redlinked. Is there anywhere that I could find the results for them? SarahTHunter (talk) 16:02, 20 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Paralympic sports[edit]

There is very differing naming of the sports in Category:Paralympic sports: I see four and and half variants of titles including "Para" which I hardly think is the general use: Paracanoe, Para-equestrian, Para biathlon and Paralympic cross-country skiing, and then there is Para Taekwondo. IPC uses "Para ", while BBC seems to favour "Para-". Kaffet i halsen (talk) 16:31, 24 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Usage on Wikipedia and on Paralympics on the right. I will probably suggest renaming all to "Para (sport)" though RM. Para(sport) that would follow Parasports has a flaw in that Parasailing could mean either parasailing with chute and Para World Sailing Championships as in the formerly contested Paralympic sport.
I wrote "BBC seems to favour "Para-", however BBC use seem to vary in a way that cannot be found in whether it is part of specific championship or grammar (Para athletics/Para-athletics BBC search and Para swimming/Para-swimming BBC search).
