Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

Late 19th century near Brooklyn Bridge

I've added a close-up cropping and enhancement to help identification. It look to me as if the image was taken from the Manhattan side, south of the bridge, looking up the East River. Further than that I can't say, except that I wonder if the building in the foreground might not be along Broadway or William Street, something basically parallel to the river. Turning "New York" into a disambiguation page

Some 19th century images of Brooklyn

I just went through Commons:Category:Stereo cards of buildings in Brooklyn and added some reasonable categories to these images (which were all previously only in a temporary category generated when a bot uploaded the NYPL Robert N. Dennis collection of stereoscopic views). However, most of these could use further categorization in terms of year they were built (and, in many cases, year they were destroyed, or their current use which is likely to be different after more than a century). Doubtless someone who knows Brooklyn history well could come up with additional useful categories and useful description of locations, etc. For example, I imagine it should be possible to add quite a bit of information about the theater and post office in the picture I've included in this post. (Former?) fountain in Central Park

Neither the Parks Department website nor the Central Park Conservancy's list that statue or fountain, so I believe you are correct that it is no longer there. I haven't found anything yet that says what happened to it. Beyond My Ken (talk) 00:38, 14 November 2010 (UTC)

Shadow lengths suggest to my mind a midday midsummer picture, which with shadow directions would make the heading northwest. 1870 parlance would be inclined to label the entrance at now Grand Army Plaza as the "Fifth Avenue" one and be more specific in referring to another of the gates on 5th. Together this all suggests, at least me, three chances out of four that the camera was sitting within a dozen yards of 40°45′57″N 73°58′25″W and the fountain in the water of "The Pond" a dozen yards northwest of there. 19th century photo of "Trinity Church" (not the one one Wall Street)

Church of the Ascension

The NYPL at least tentatively describes this as "Trinity Church", but clearly it's not the famous one at Broadway & Wall. Most likely no longer extant, but can anyone identify it? Looks like the Church of the Ascension, an Episcopal church also by Richard Upjohn, built at about the same time as the current (third) Trinity Church was being built. See here for a period drawing of it. It's still standing, at Fifth Avenue and 10th Street in the Village. Not connected with Trinity, as far as I can tell. Another church

I continue to work my way through Commons:Category:Stereo cards of churches in Manhattan, New York City. I've been able to identify most of these (even some others that had misleading descriptions) and to add relevant categories. Again, help from someone who knows NYC history better than I would be useful. Here's one where I have no idea, but am intrigued: obviously, some church that was gutted by a fire in the 19th century. The image's alternate title says it's "St. George's", so I think this would probably be St. George's Episcopal Church (Manhattan) on Stuyvesant Square. It had a fire in 1865 -- one source says the roof was damaged, another says it "burnt down", but whatever the specifics it had to be rebuilt. I can't find the date it re-opened, but I assume it would have taken some time, even with J.P. Morgan's money behind it (he was a member). St. George's does indeed have two towers, one on the north side of the building and one on the south, so that fits the description as well. Like the Church of the Ascension, St. George's in also still standing (although it's now part of a combined parish with Calvary Church on Park Avenue South). My last thread (I hope) on those stereo cards of Manhattan churches

Commons:Category:Stereo cards of churches in Manhattan, New York City: a lot of these could use a more specific geographic category (neighborhood) if anyone is so inclined. Also, as of this writing, 10 distinct images (with a PNG and a JPEG for each) are also in Commons:Category:Unidentified churches in Manhattan, New York City. Some even have a church name, denomination, or even a street name from NYPL (though we've seen already that 2-4% of those have been inaccurate), but remain basically unidentified. (I wouldn't consider a church really to be identified until we have at least most of denomination, pretty precise location, approximate date of construction, whether it is extant and if it isn't then when it was destroyed, etc.) For some of these where I have guesses, I've made remarks on their respective talk pages. User:Beyond My Ken has been incredibly helpful on this, and his thoughts on the unidentified ones are at User talk:Beyond My Ken#New York churches. Of the ones discussed there, the only one I'd consider now to be firmly identified is the old Mariners Church. - Jmabel | Talk 19:00, 28 November 2010 (UTC)

US Collaboration reactivated & Portal:United States starting next

Casliber recently posted a suggestion on the talk page for WikiProject United States about getting the US Wikipedians Collaboration page going again in an effort to build up articles for GA through FA class. See Wikipedia:U.S. Wikipedians' notice board/USCOTM. After several days of work from him the page is up and ready for action. A few candidates have already been added for you to vote on or you can submit one using the directions provided. If you are looking for inspiration here is a link to the most commonly viewed articles currently under the scope of Wikiproject United States. There are tons of good articles in the various US related projects as well so feel free to submit any article relating to US topics (not just those under the scope of WPUS). This noticeboard is intended for ‘’’All’’’ editors working on US subjects, not just those under WPUS.

The next item I intend to start updating is Portal:United States if anyone is interested in helping. Again this is not specific to WPUS and any help would be greatly appreciated to maximize visibility of US topics. The foundation has already been established its just a matter of updating the content with some new images, biographies and articles. I've deleted the material you left here, as it was clearly a copyright violation: we're not allowed to post large blocks of copyrighted material, even on talk pages, although it can be used as source material for the facts included.

Yes, I agree that the article should be at "8 Spruce Street", which is where it was until December 5th when another editor moved it without prior discussion. I objected at the time (you can see my half of the conversation here), and I still hold that opinion. The building will always be 8 Spruce Street, but I have grave doubts that "New York by Gehry" will stand the test of time.

Here's what I propose: I'm going to move it back to 8 Spruce Street, and make a redirect to it from "New York by Gehry". If the editor who moved it last month thinks my revert is not a good idea, he can start a request move discussion, and we'll see what consensus is. Inaccurate map in The Bronx

I just noticed that the map in the article does not include the carve-out of Marble Hill. The question is, should the current map stay or go? More opinions welcome, as we have a stalemate on the talk page. ScottyBerg (talk) 15:52, 4 February 2011 (UTC)

Yes, I think that helps greatly. Thanks very much. The new Manhattan map is fine. The new Bronx map is better, as it shows Marble Hill, but remains problematic as it shows the neighborhood in the same color as the rest of the Bronx. Actually both of the older maps display Marble Hill with a cross-hatch of grey and yellow. I would speculate that is a compromise from an editing dispute, but I'm not interested enough to dig through the page histories and archives to find out for sure. Prospect Park Parade Ground / Neighborhood Confusion

I would like to write an article on Prospect Park's Parade Ground. Also, I would like to mention it in the Prospect Park article where currently no mention of it is found.

It is an official part of the park and I am not sure why it isn't mentioned anywhere in the Prospect Park article. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prospect_Park_(Brooklyn)

It is an important historically significant site in Brooklyn and I think deserves mention.

While researching this I discovered that the Prospect Park article says "public park in the New York City borough of Brooklyn located between Park Slope, Prospect-Lefferts Gardens, Kensington, Windsor Terrace and Flatbush Avenue, Grand Army Plaza and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden." In keeping with no mention of the Parade Ground, no mention of the southern border of the park is to be found.

According to the list of Brooklyn Neighborhoods article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Brooklyn_neighborhoods), the neighborhood to the south of the parade grounds is "Prospect Park South" which would sound like it makes a lot of sense to be the neighborhood at the southern border. However, on the Prospect Park South article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prospect_Park_South,_Brooklyn) it says the northern border of the neighborhood is Church Ave., exactly one block south of the bottom of the park.

I have found mention that "Caton Park" is the "micro-neighborhood" immediately south of the park and north of prospect park south. (http://www.cb14brooklyn.com/our-neighborhood/caton-park/). There doesn't seem to be any mention of Caton Park on wikipedia.

In addition to the Brooklyn Neighborhoods article's designation of the neighborhood as "Prospect Park South", Google Maps also makes this distinction. I have also seen all of the neighborhoods in the area referred to as "Victorian Flatbush".

You can see the confusion. Any recommendations for what should be done?

(Very) old post office

"Old post office, New York"

Before the new General Post Office was built in City Hall Park, the main post office was at the Middle Dutch Church in Nassau Street from 1845 on - which this image doesn't look like at all. That covers the photographic era, so I suggest that maybe "Old post office" doesn't mean "The old main post office" but instead "An old post office", meaning that it's a branch office rather than the GPO. Hmm. I wonder if the p.o. at the Middle Dutch Chuch got so overcrowded that they had to build an annex to accomodate the overflow? The building here looks very temporary. Just checked the Encyclopedia of NYC, which confirmed the facts above, but also said that the original city p.o. was in the rotunda on Chambers Street, but that a branch opened near Wall Street in 1835. In 1845 when the main p.o. moved to the church, the branch moved to Chatham Square -- so I suppose what's pictured could be the Chatham Square branch. This is the "Old Dutch Church" (Middle Dutch Church) at Nassau and Cedar Streets, but shown from the back (Nassau and Liberty) "where mail bags and carriers received attention[?]". Shown after P.O. had moved in 1875. See back of card at NYPL website. Station1 (talk) 05:47, 25 February 2011 (UTC)

Manhattan photo request

Would someone mind snapping a shot of the Entrance to the Air France ticket counter on the 56th Street side of Avenue of the Americas Plaza? It will be helpful for the Avenue of the Americas Plaza article and for the Air France article

@WhisperToMe: Ok, so I'm a bit uncertain about what you are looking for. The 56th street entrance to 125 West 55th Street is addressed as 120 West 26th Street. Most of that side of the building is obscured by scaffolding, and there's no Air France ticket counter, although there is an empty retail space under the scaffolding. I took a shot of the 55th Street entrance and a couple of the 56th Street entrance, none of which are particularly interesting, as the subject is pretty unphotogenic, at least to someone of my modest abilities. By the way, the shot from Google Maps view I posted showed an Air France logo on the pane of one side of the building - It may be outdated, though. The logo may be gone. Hmmm, http://www.airfrance.us/US/en/local/avotreservice/pointsdeventes/agence_nyc.htm at the Air France website doesn't list the 55th Street building anymore. It only lists JFK and EWR airports. Maybe Air France closed its city ticket office? As per http://www.airfrance.us/US/en/local/resainfovol/meilleuresoffres/marketing_Week_of_Romance.htm the airline's USA executive offices are still in the building. Great historical photo resource

This may be old news to everybody here, but it's news to me: the entire Berenice Abbott archive of photos of "Changing New York" from the mid-1930s, all public domain (she was working for a federal project) are on Flickr.[1] There seem to be hundreds of them, but only two dozen are uploaded to Commons. Yes it's a lovely building which I haven't seen up close in about ten years. Two weeks ago, biking with a gang to Jackson Dinver we were a quarter mile east of it, and I was half a mile west of it returning alone to Manhattan via Hobart Street. The north or front side which I remember well will be a nice sunrise or sunset picture in midsummer; the other sides might be good any time of the year. Always carry a little camera; not just to a staged scheduled event but always. At least a camera phone. The best camera at home is not as good as the camera you've got with you. I'm troubled by a number of the Bronx neighborhood articles, which seem to be thinly sourced and filled with OR. This Concourse article is especially problematic because I'm not finding evidence that there is such a neighborhood, though there is an "East Concourse" and "West Concourse" (though not in wide use). There's already Category:National Register of Historic Places in Manhattan and everything else is already in Category:National Register of Historic Places in New York City - not sure if there's enough there to split up without overcategorizing, but if you do I recommend using just Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens, Staten Island. P L E A S E !!!! Just give us a map -- a simple copy of bus routes in Manhattan and the boroughs!! I can't even find a Bus route map on a city bus!! WHY ??Do the people who design this SO overdone web site only travel by limousine?? Have they ever had to unravel the mysteries of city bus routes? Give them a bus pass and set them to the task for a minimum of seven days before they're allowed to write a single word more. Most of what is shown on these pages is useless. Digitalized New York newspapers

This may not be news to the rest of you, but it was to me. I just learned that the Library of Congress has digitalized a bunch of newspapers from throughout the country, including the old New York Tribune, New York World and New York Sun, from the 1800s through 1922. The available dates for each newspaper vary; some have just a few days and some many years, This is a treasure trove of hard-to-find source material, including public domain photographs (such as this one[3] I just uploaded). I think this view is looking northeast from near the Hudson, indeed near the once and future World Trade Center. The two towers on the right are obviously the Park Row Building and the pointy spire at extreme left is probably the Tribune Building, but what is that big white building in the middle? Jim - I don't have an answer for you, but try going to this website (the city's GIS page), click on the "use aerial map" icon (looks like a camera), the, after the current photo loads,, dial it back to 1924, that might give you a better idea of the buildings that were extant in 1901. The primary editor, User:BruceWHain, was exhibiting some pretty extreme ownership tendencies. Other editors have since stepped in, and BHW received a couple of blocks for edit-warring and disruptive editing. The article still needs some trimming, tightening and stylistic re-working, so other input would be valuable. I'm also concerned that the ownership issues haven't gone away, so other eyes to keep a watch on it for when BWH comes off his block would be a good idea as well. Hi! About the The Japanese School of New York... before it moved to Connecticut in 1992, it occupied two campuses in Queens.

Did the school move from one Queens campus to another? Did it occupy both campuses at the same time? Also, which neighborhoods definitively were the campuses in? Someone working for the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation has been trying to update the page to the museum's latest mission statement and brand identity, using copyrighted copy-pastes from http://www.guggenheim.org/guggenheim-foundation. After a couple copyvio warnings, they enlisted a sockpuppet or meat puppet for the same copyvio edits.

Lack of References and Citations on many street articles

Many articles for New York City streets, particularly in the outer boroughs like Brooklyn do not have proper references and citations proving their notability and historical significance. This has been the case ever since the articles were created. Where can we find proof that these streets are well known enough to be on Wikipedia? I would nominate some of them for deletion, but do not want arguments to erupt like in this this AfD because of people who have no knowledge of street notability voting to keep a street article just because a single subway station serves it. Hi. Carl Fischer Music is a NYC based music publishing firm that desperately needed heavy editing. Before undergoing major edits, this page was disorganized and confusing to read. At Talk:Brighton_Beach#Map I realized that even though some NYT newspaper sources said that some schools were in Brighton Beach, some maps accompanying different NYT articles about those two neighborhoods would place the schools in Coney Island, and those NYT articles express the boundaries in writing.

Language knowledge

How many of you know Haitian Creole, Albanian, Polish, or Hebrew? The idea is that we get people on the English Wikipedia to then write articles on the Wikipedias of those other languages (especially since some on here may not have thought about contributing in other languages). There's nothing wrong with cross-wiki efforts, is there? BTW I've made multiple requests for starting articles about the New York City DOE in multiple languages and so many of those requests have been fulfilled. English Wikipedia has nothing to do with Wikipedias in other language. Post messages on those Wikipedias if you're concerned about them, or run the English Wikipedia article through a mechanical translator, or something, but this is not the place to post these concerns of yours. They are separate projects, but they are all related to each other as they are all Wikimedia Foundation projects. There are many users who go across the various language projects with their contributions. In terms of policy (as in 'you guys need to do something about this XYZ policy') one shouldn't campaign on other wikis since they all have separate policies dictated by separate user bases, but I don't see a problem simply asking for users who speak other languages to go on other Wikimedia Foundation projects to help coverage in a subject. And cooperation among the language projects is useful. For instance some Russian Wikipedians had questions about the identity of a Korean person, and so they went across to the English Wikipedia to get more info, and I helped them out by contacting Korean and English Wikipedians: ru:Обсуждение_участника:WhisperToMe#Oh.2C_those_Koreans.E2.80.A6 WhisperToMe (talk) 14:14, 12 February 2013 (UTC)

I looked through your article quickly (and did some cleanup and wikification on it, but not as much as it needs - which is a thorough copyediting for grammar and style), and in my opinion the subject's connection to NYC is not strong enough to justify linking to this project. Others may differ, though, so see what kind of response you get. But, in any event, the article does cry out for cleaning up, so you would be well advised to find someone who's willing to do that for you -- maybe someone from the Film Project. Theatre District, New York

There was recently a move discussion on Theatre District, New York, to move the article to Theater District, New York. This discussion took place without any notification to this project, which is the logical place for such a notification to be made. The move was closed by User:RegentsPark. I reverted it, totally unaware that it was the result of a RM discussion: I thought it was simply an inadvertent (and incorrect) move by an editor (not an admin - there was no indication that the move was the result of an RM discussion). RegentsPark decided not to revert my reversion, but editor User:Epeefleche decided otherwise, and reverted. I am asking for another RM to put this article back where it belongs, at Theatre District, New York. I have stated that I will stand by whatever the result of the discussion is, but I do insist that the move discussion be representative of the Wikipedia community, and not simply the result of the opinions of a few people.

Hi BMK. The move discussion was noticed as required. It attracted robust participation from many editors. Was open for a week. Had a consensus, sysop close. That discussion and that close were both reflected on the talkpage whose move you reverted.

The closer then indicated to you, in subsequent discussion, that though your view differed from the consensus, he did not believe your view was correct. You then anyway edited directly against that consensus, on the article page.

The discussion just closed -- under the circumstances, I'm not clear why we would reopen a just-closed robust discussion, just because an editor dislikes it. There is more on this issue here.--Epeefleche (talk) 10:07, 22 February 2013 (UTC)

The Cooper Square Hotel

Hi,

I work for Black Frame PR, who represents The Standard Hotel chain, which currently owns what used to be The Cooper Square Hotel. They have requested that the page be taken down as the building no longer goes by this name, nor is it owned in any way shape or form by those who constructed the building. It is also undergoing a major renovation, to be unveiled this Fall, which will render the facade virtually unrecognizable. Thanks for any help you have to offer.

Lists of intersections, crosswalks and traffic lights

Some of our articles about New York City streets and avenues include long lists of every intersection along the street, including whether it's controlled by traffic lights, and mid-block cross walks. These lists are largely trivia and aren't encyclopedic. The list of intersections might be encyclopedic (but surely a map is a better way to express this) but the traffic lights and cross walks surely are not. Wikipedia is not a GPS nor is it a travel guide. I propose that we stop adding these lists to street articles and remove them from articles where they already exist. (See, for example, this). Wallack's Theatre

This article looks really terrible, but the primary author is resisting any changes I make to improve the readability & layout, so I'm backing off. Other eyes may want to take a look. There are also plagirism issues: large blocks of text, suitably credited, but somehow "abridged" and "rearranged" (primary author's words) despite being presented as direct quotes, with no indication (via ellipses, etc.) what changes were made to the text. The amount quoted also seems excessive - even when the text is not still copyrighted, we discourage large amounts of direct quoting instead of paraphrasing or re-writing the information. Incorrect URL

For a brand search for the Ritz-Carlton hotel (The Ritz-Carlton Central Park), the Hotel St Moritz is showing up in the knowledge graph, pulling from Wikipedia. Could you please seperate the two Wiki pages?

The URL of this page is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ritz-Carlton_New_York_Central_Park, when it should be http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hotel_St._Moritz. All of the content is about Hotel St. Moritz. Untagged articles

There are a lot of articles relevant to WP:NYC that are not duly tagged with the project template. I just added 2009 World Series and 1926 World Series, both of which were partially hosted by Yankee Stadium. Does anyone else want to help me go through Category:New York City and all its subcategories adding the project banner? Great! I've been doing similar tagging for other projects through AWB by compiling a list based on the relevant category and its subcategories, converting to the talk page, and then having a "skip" defined as when AWB finds the project banner. Cool, well I was looking at the WikiProjectTagger info on AnimoeBOT's talk page, and looks like including all subcategories is not generally done anymore, I guess that means it's not allowed to recurse, and that we should instead provide the list of categories to process. In addition, those categories must be approved by the WikiProject, shown via a linked discussion. Do we have that? I guess we could publicly approve all of them here, unless someone objects... Manhattan-centric infobox photo

I apologize if this has been discussed before, but I noticed that the infobox photo in the New York City article only contains one image from outside Manhattan. (Plus the Statue of Liberty). There are no photos of Brooklyn (except for a sliver in the Brooklyn Bridge shot), or the Bronx or Staten Island. I realize there are simply more landmarks in Manhattan, but this struck me as a bit inaccurate. Thoughts? Delaywaves • talk 03:50, 1 December 2013 (UTC)

If the Brooklyn Bridge counts as being in Manhattan, then it counts as being in Brooklyn as well. The Statue of Liberty is in New York Harbor, so of 7 images, only 4 are actually of Manhattan, per se. I agree that a picture from the Bronx or Staten Island would be a nice thing. Since the vast majority of the city consists of apartment buildings and houses, I thought that a simple streetscape photo belongs somewhere in this infobox. When people think about NYC, they usually only think about Manhattan. Not many people would recognise the hills of Staten Island as being part of New York City at first glance. True, but my entire point is that for a city of 8+ million people, there ought to be something in the infobox photo that goes beyond the obvious touristy/famous locations and portrays what 90% of the city actually looks like. I actually don't think that's a very good point at all. What makes a city unique -- and identifiable -- is not its prosaic residential or business neighborhoods, which tend to look remarkably similar from one city to another, but the things that make the place special and memorable in the mind of the visitor, resident or casual inquirer. If we were to go with your conception, then all city articles would feature images of apartment buildings and office towers in their infoboxes, but those are simply the background from which the really notable things pop out. The infobox image needs to feature the instantly identifiable and iconic places of a city. After all, it's not a sociological essay or a political tract on egalitarianism, it's an infobox which synopsizes the information about the subject, both textually and visually.

In every city that's ever existed, the majority of places are fairly unremarkable; it's the tiny minority of really special places which serve to define the image of the city. The infobox needs to show them. Beyond My Ken (talk) 04:37, 2 December 2013 (UTC)
