Project directory

Hello. The WikiProject Council has recently updated the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. Please review the directory and make any changes to the entries for your project that you see fit. There is also a directory of portals, at User:B2T2/Portal, listing all the existing portals. Feel free to add any of them to the portals or comments section of your entries in the directory. The three columns regarding assessment, peer review, and collaboration are included in the directory for both the use of the projects themselves and for that of others. Having such departments will allow a project to more quickly and easily identify its most important articles and its articles in greatest need of improvement. If you have not already done so, please consider whether your project would benefit from having departments which deal in these matters. It is my hope that all the changes to the directory can be finished by the first of next month. Please feel free to make any changes you see fit to the entries for your project before then. Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. The {{Africa Project}} now includes assessment parameters for Libya. If any parties would be interested, replacement of the existing {{WikiProject Libya}} with that banner would be greatly appreciated, and probably help this project have a clearer idea of where it stands regarding content. Libya material for List of political and geographic subdivisions by total area.

Greetings! I'm having trouble tracking down a reliable accounting of the area of Libya's largest political subdivisions for the set of lists under the auspices of this project - Municipalities of Libya lists the area of 32 municipalities, but indicates that these have now been reorganized into 22 Shabiyah, for which the areas are not provided. Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. GA Sweeps invitation

This message is being sent to WikiProjects with GAs under their scope. Since August 2007, WikiProject Good Articles has been participating in GA sweeps. The process helps to ensure that articles that have passed a nomination before that date meet the GA criteria. After nearly two years, the running total has just passed the 50% mark. In order to expediate the reviewing, several changes have been made to the process. A new worklist has been created, detailing which articles are left to review. Instead of reviewing by topic, editors can consider picking and choosing whichever articles they are interested in.

We are always looking for new members to assist with reviewing the remaining articles, and since this project has GAs under its scope, it would be beneficial if any of its members could review a few articles (perhaps your project's articles). Your project's members are likely to be more knowledgeable about your topic GAs then an outside reviewer. As a result, reviewing your project's articles would improve the quality of the review in ensuring that the article meets your project's concerns on sourcing, content, and guidelines. However, members can also review any other article in the worklist to ensure it meets the GA criteria.

If any members are interested, please visit the GA sweeps page for further details and instructions in initiating a review. If you'd like to join the process, please add your name to the running total page. In addition, for every member that reviews 100 articles from the worklist or has a significant impact on the process, s/he will get an award when they reach that threshold. Libya articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Libya articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. Experienced editors with specialist regional knowledge urgently wanted

The Arbitration Committee is seeking to appoint additional people to the CheckUser and Oversight teams, in particular people with specialist knowledge.

Because of increasing activity in the South Asian, Southeast Asian, or Middle Eastern regions, CheckUser applications are particularly sought from people who not only meet our general requirements but also are familiar with the ISPs and typical editing patterns of any of these regions.

Successful candidates are likely to be regularly available and already familiar with local and global processes, policies, and guidelines especially those concerning CheckUser and Oversight. CheckUser candidates are expected to be technically proficient, and previous experience with OTRS is beneficial for Oversight candidates. All candidates must at least 18 years of age; have attained legal majority in their jurisdiction of residence; and be willing to identify to the Wikimedia Foundation prior to receiving permissions. Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. Mustafa Tajouri

An article, albeit a stub at moment, which I created has been put up at Afd. The article being Mustafa Tajouri. Tajouri is the Ambassador of Libya to Russia, and only a few sources can be found on this highest level diplomat from Libya - those sources being in English and Russian. As Tajouri is Libyan, it is likely there are going to be sources for information out there in Arabic, however, not understanding Arabic, I can't find and add these sources to the article. If any of this project members could take a look and see if they can find any info on this ambassador, and add it to the article. There are going to be a heap of ambassador articles on subjects from the Arab world, and they are forming part of this article I am working on developing. Also if someone could add the name in Arabic to the article, and correct it if incorrect, that would be good too. On a small sidenote, Category:Articles needing Arabic script or text has more article in it which I have created and also need names in Arabic. Ambassadors are high level representatives of their nations, and they have likely had a multitude of credentials for which they were appointed to the position in the first place, it's just finding the info that can be difficult, and it is important to fight systematic bias to have articles on these ambassadors. Megrahi and Lamin - Free Use Licenced Images

Please excuse my ignorance in this matter, but can anyone tell me why this Libyan man's name is spelt in two different ways in the one article, namely, Lamin Khalifah Fhimah??

Libyan placenames

I'm working on a standard (and official) system to transliterate (and retrotransliterate) Arabic script into my native language (applyable also for Spanish and Portuguese with some changes) and I'm nowadays trying to apply it in toponimic names for a publication, so I've chosen Libyan names first. The system has already been published and can be seen here, section 5.2. I've seen some inconsistencies in the name (transliteration) of some shabiyas of Libya (some articles give one transcription, some others give one different) in the articles of Wikipedia and its sources (mainly articles Districts of Libya and List of FIPS region codes (J-L)#LY: Libya, and sources for ISO 3166-2:LY here and here and statoids.com; if needed I can provide the differences in sources leading to confusion), and ask for help from a native speaker of Arabic to clear some doubts. Can you help me?

Problems are mainly concerning the unmarked harakaat for long vowels in the Standard Arabic version of the placename, and are the following:

Mohammed El-hadhiri

The article on Libyan politician Mohammed El-hadhiri has been tagged as an unreferenced BLP since December 2008, which is the current focus month of the BLP Rescue Project. It's a very short stub asserting that he's a member of the Pan-African Parliament but I can't find any reference to him there, nor any other reliable sources of any kind. This could be due to the spelling of his name - or to a general lack of notability. I'm posting here in the hope that someone with better knowledge of the area might like to take an interest and either source the article or PROD it.--Plad2 (talk) 07:02, 2 November 2010 (UTC)

1920 Jabal al-Gharbi civil war

WikiProject Libya,

Article: 1920 Jabal al-Gharbi civil war.

There seems to be a slight problem with the above article. It appears as to be a "Stub", but has been assessed as "Start". Then there is the name of the city/place in Libya "Jabal al-Gharbi". According to Wikipedia, there is an article that is quite similar to the above name Al Jabal al Gharbi and Google Earth has "Al Jabal al Gharbi". Which is correct? I a Coordinator of the WikiProject Military History and would like to try and improve the article. It maybe small, but it's worth getting things right than just leaving things incorrect. Oh its the same place. From my limited understanding of arabic, I believe Jabal al-Gharbi is essentially, Gharbi Mountains or mountains of gharbi. Al Jabal al gharbi would then be THE mountains of gharbi. The format we have been using is to mostly drop that. Its part of the arabic word, but in english it wouldn't be, so in the transliteration it has been getting removed. Mind you, I don't speak arabic, so i could be completely wrong, but from what I've seen, that's pretty much how its been. Party of the Brotherhood

National Gathering for Freedom, Justice and Development, whose foundation was announced in November 2011, and which is reportedly led by Ali al-Sallabi, and Justice and Development Party (Libya), which was officially founded on 3 March 2012 and which is led by Mohamed Sowan. Could it be that both are in fact one and the same party? Particularly given that the source from November 2011 pointed out that "National Gathering for Freedom, Justice and Development" was a "provisional name". For me, this indicates the possibility that they changed the (complicated) name to a more simple one before the official foundation took place. Could someone of the WikiProject Libya team with knowledge in the emerging post-Ghaddafi politics of Libya please check this and answer at Talk:National Gathering for Freedom, Justice and Development? Yes, that should be the case although we got both names wrong. According to these two articles [1] [2] name of MB party is Justice and Construction Party, head of party is Mohammed Sawan and has backing of Ali al-Sallabi and Abdulhakim Belhaj. EllsworthSK (talk) 23:23, 5 March 2012 (UTC)
Now, if I understand it right, there are two parties and they are rivals: "...he (=Belhaj) is joining the National Party. The party is said to have the backing of Sheikh Ali Salabi and is seen as a strong competitor to Muslim Brotherhood’s Justice and Construction Party." So we have (1) National Party=National Gathering for Freedom, Justice and Development of Sallabi and Belhaj and (2) Justice and Construction Party=Justice and Development Party (Libya) of the Brotherhood. --RJFF (talk) 00:10, 6 March 2012 (UTC)

Mercenaries in 2011 Civil War at History of Libya under Muammar Gaddafi

Hello. I have twice reverted the removal of the word 'mercenaries' at the page about the history of Libya under Gadaffi. Another editor says the reference I have used is 'a lie'. The use of "mercenaries" at the infobox is a lie, more when its only applied to the pro-Gaddafi forces, like if the so-called "rebels" did not have foreign fighters in its ranks. (Irony ON) Or perhaps the "rebel" foreign ones were "volunteers" or "freedom fighters" instead "mercenaries"? (Irony OFF). Come on...--HCPUNXKID (talk) 12:01, 20 November 2012 (UTC)
There actually is a very distinct difference between Freedom Fighters and Mercenaries. If the foreign fighters on the Gaddafi side were being paid, or promised money, and the foreign fighters on the rebel side were doing it because they either wanted to help or were simply against Gaddafi for their own reasons, then the first group would be termed mercenaries, while the second group would not be. It is a simple definition issue. If you have evidence showing rebel foreign fighters were paid, please feel free to share it. Jeancey (talk) 18:26, 20 November 2012 (UTC)

Help with a place name

Hi, I'm currently working on the article Italian battleship Sardegna, which according to a contemporary source took part in an attack on a port named "Buscheifa". It appears to be located near Misrata, based on the context. I assume that's an old name, but can't identify what it place it refers to now. Can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks. WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? Sounds like a good idea. I suggest removing inactive editors from the list of participants. This makes the project look bettter supported than it really is, and might serve to bring in new members. Are the 2006 goals stil relevant, or should revised goals be proposed? Either way, I suggest putting in a new date. Goals dated at 2006 make the project look instantly stale. Good luck? Misurata Province vs Misrata District

There has been edit-warring over this split for years. I have no idea which approach is better, but the latest incarnation of historical Misurata Province did not even have a hat note to disambiguate it from modern Misrata District! Because I didn't see any discussion, I reverted, but the Misurata Province article included historical details that are not found in the Misrata District article. It seems entirely reasonable that we should have both. Could y'all here take care of it? Maybe a mention on the Misurata Province talk page summarizing your decision to either have two articles or to keep just one? — kwami (talk) 05:28, 10 September 2020 (UTC)

User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.
