The name of Goguryeo

Hello.
The Goguryeo article says that king Jangsu named the country 'Goryeo' based on this source. What was the name of the country before that? can someone please translate the following lines from the previous source:

30여 년 동안 고려시대사를 연구해 온 저자(고려대 교수)는 이런 주장에 대해 하나하나 학술적으로 반박한다. ‘고려’라는 명칭은 도대체 어디서 온 것인가? 결론부터 말하자면 “고구려가 곧 고려였다.” 연가 7년명 고구려 불상과 중원 고구려비 같은 고구려의 유물에는 분명히 ‘고구려’라고 씌어져야 할 자리에 ‘고려’라고 돼 있다. 그러니까 고구려가 존재하던 당시에 타국은 물론 고구려인 자신들조차 나라 이름을 ‘고려’라고 불렀던 것이다. 이는 단순히 약칭이 아니었다. 저자는 “고구려가 어느 시점에 나라 이름을 정식으로 ‘고려’로 바꿨다”고 분석하고, 그 시점을 장수왕이 평양으로 천도한 서기 427년으로 본다. 김부식의 ‘삼국사기’는 자신이 살던 시대의 고려 왕조와 구별하기 위해 천도 이후에도 일부러 ‘고구려’라 썼을 뿐이다.

@Sayom: Authors who have studied the consideration sidaesa over 30 years (Korea University) has refuted these claims one by one to the academic. The name "consider" What the hell is where it came from? Speaking conclusion "Koguryo was soon considered" Sonata gotta have that 'consideration' in the place that has to be written clearly "Goguryeo" Goguryeo Goguryeo relics such as Buddha statues and 7 nyeonmyeong goguryeobi midfield. So at the time there was Goguryeo Goguryeo that other countries will, of course they even sang 'consider' the name of the country. This was not simply abbreviated. The author "formally changed to Koguryo 'consider' the name of the country at some point," he analyzed, and see the point in AD 427 years is one jangsuwang nectarines in Pyongyang. Kim Bu-sik of "Samguksagi 'is just deliberately wrote called' Koguryo 'nectarines after in order to distinguish them from the Goryeo dynasty of the era he lived. @ㅂㄱㅇ: I am sorry but Google translation does not help. All I understood from the source is that Jangsu-Wang changed the name of the country to Goryeo, and when Kim Bu-sik, who lived during the "Goryeo" times (the Goryeo established by Taejo Wang-geon,) wrote his "Samguksagi", he named the country Goguryeo (Old Goryeo) to distinguish it from their Goryeo. @ㅂㄱㅇ: Then All what Jangsu-Wang did is just abbreviating the name? I know that I sound silly, but please bear with me. What I know is that Go (Korean: 고) means old, is that correct? If yes, then what did Go in the original name of Goguryeo refer to? As I said before when Kim Bu-sik used it he meant to refer to the previous Goryeo, but before the time of Jangsu-Wang, what did it refer to? The source roughly says what you suggest, that the name of the country was Goryeo and since Taejo considered his country the continuation of Goguryeo, he also named his country Goryeo, and Kim Bushik, to distinguish his own country from the former, referred to the former as Old Goryeo. But I think we need more academic sources to back this up, and not just an article in the Chosun Ilbo. :) I have a couple Korean history books in English at home, but none of them even mentions this (and they are pretty comprehensive books) Teemeah 편지 (letter) 15:41, 31 October 2016 (UTC)
@Teemeah:Jinwung Kim in his book, A History of Korea: From "Land of the Morning Calm" to States in Conflict, (Pages 23-24 & 32) mentioned that there was a prefecture in Hyeondo commandery who had the name Goguryeo, and called it Old Goguryeo and that Jumong established the New Goguryeo Later. However, he does not mention the abbreviation of the name later during Jangsu-Wang. I will continue looking into sources.--Sayom (talk) 01:35, 1 November 2016 (UTC)

@Teemeah: Jinwung Kim also mentioned in page 79 that Goryeo is the correct name of the kingdom, however, he does not mention the reason for the change. Historical Dictionary of Pyongyang is another source that I found, which says that Jangsu-Wang changed the name of the kingdom to Goryeo (page 69.) The Korean article about Goguryeo refereed to the Goguryeo monument in Jungwon, Chungju as a source of the information. This sentence is from ko:고구려#역사. It means "Goguryeobongi(고구려본기) in the Samguksagi(삼국사기) says Dongmyeongwang(동명왕), Buyeogye(부여계), decided capital Jolbon(졸본), and named country Jolbonbuyeo(졸본부여) in 37 BCE." --ㅂㄱㅇ (talk) (Bieup Giyeok Ieung) 08:35, 2 November 2016 (UTC)

@ㅂㄱㅇ and Teemeah: Thankfully, I just found another English source that answer my question. Korean Myths and Folk Legends says in page 25 and I quote that "Chumong gave the name Koguryo to this land after his family name Ko. Although his original surname was Hae, Chumong adopted Ko (meaning "high") as his new family name". Putting everything together, the first name of the country was Goguryeo meaning 'high Goryeo' and then King Jangsu shortened the name and removed his family name. Later, Kim Bu-sik used Go (meaning old) to refer to the previous Goryeo. Could someone please confirm that Go (고) actually hold both meanings? Thank you.--Sayom (talk) 12:16, 2 November 2016 (UTC)

General Association of Koreans in China

I am trying to write an article on this organization, which is a pro-DPRK group in the PRC, however, I am having trouble finding sources in English. There is a Korean language wiki article, but my attempts to use Google translate don't really help. In fact, my computer won't even ,allow me to copy and paste the link, because it apparently can't read hangul. You can find a page with a link to it here.

New article Cannabis in North Korea

There seems to be a lot of rumor about how legal/tolerated cannabis/marijuana is in North Korea, so I've done what I can to cut through the secondary-source chatter and get back to the original reports everyone else is discussing. I don't know it there's any more authoritative data out there, but I'd invite anyone who can to help build this, particularly if anyone is able to read South Korean news sources or academic journals that may discuss this.

Industrial hemp is also within the bounds of the article, so feel free to talk about the cannabis fibre economy if there are sources. Anyone here up to write an accompanying Cannabis in South Korea? Goonsquad LCpl Mulvaney (talk) 03:39, 21 November 2016 (UTC)

Sangnoksu

Perhaps someone can help me find some information related to this article I just wrote and nominated for DYK:

  • ref that it is a required reading in Korean schools
  • ref that it is the namesake of Sangnok-gu
  • ref and date that the novel was first published as a book (1940 according to WorldCat?

Piotrus, this reference ([1]) seems to support the fact that the metro stop is named after the novel, but I don't think it explicitly states that the novel is the namesake of Sangnok-gu. The relevant text is:
"당고개와 오이도를 오가며 수도권 시민의 발로서 그 소임을 맡고있는 4호선 상록수역은 그러한 최용신의 업적을 기리기 위해서 심훈의 동명소설의 이름을 딴 전철역이다."

Is Mintpaper a reliable source?

I'm working on the article Glen Check (band) and have come across a pretty in-depth interview conducted by mintpaper.com. [1] Unfortunately, I can't read Korean, and Google translate is of no help whatsoever. It's unclear to me whether mintpaper would even qualify as a reliable source though. @Jpcase: It looks like Mintpaper organized concert festival until 2014 and since then, they organize smaller concerts every two months. They also have their own radio station. Nearly unreadable article

(See Talk:Spoon class theory# This article needs a lot of work.)

Spoon class theory is largely incoherent and in many places unreadable, thanks to sentences like this:

He suggested that gold spoon is included in a simulacrum that doesn’t have an original. Issues of gold spoon celebrities and commercials which made those people idealize changed nonexistence as existence .

That isn't English.

According to the history, it was apparently translated by Yunseon Choi at 08:06, 21 November 2016 from ko:사용자:Yunseon Choi/연습장 and heavily edited down.

The article is also an orphan, which increases its chances of deletion.

I don't know any Korean -- I can only recognize Hangul when I see it, which is pretty easy -- so I can't check the sources, but some people in this WikiProject probably can. The translation must be reviewed or redone by someone with adequate knowledge of English. As an educated native speaker of English, I'll be willing to review the revised article if necessary ({{ping}} me), but only if I can work with one or more Korean-speakers, to check the accuracy of any changes I make. --Thnidu (talk) 03:27, 21 December 2016 (UTC)

I don't think the article is as bad as to call it incoherent and unreadable, but it certainly needs English proofreading. I did a little, but I was also limited by Korean sources used that I cannot verify. @Christian140: For future reference: since the preferences pages should be the same for any Wikipedia, you should be able to enable both or code-only editor from pulldown menu there, too. @Mr KEBAB: You can change the button layout to English on any wikipedia by going to Preferences (just click around in the top menu, you will find it, but in Korean it reads 환경 설정 (third link right from the notification icons) and change the language from KO to EN screenshot. Megalia

User:ZERO2CT recently created this article about a controversial Korean feminist internet forum. There are clear POV issues; when I first encountered the article, it referred to its denizens as "feminazis", and it still contains several rather extreme allegations that I have no way of verifying, as I can't read Korean. I've done some cleanup, but the article probably needs to be completely restructured. People who can read Korean-language sources are sorely needed. —0xF8E8 (talk) 21:48, 5 November 2016 (UTC)

Bridge

There are -daegyo(대교; 大橋) and -gyo(교; 橋) in bridges' name. But how can we translate these two words. This is needed in the articles like National Route 34 (South Korea) --ㅂㄱㅇ (talk) 12:18, 21 September 2016 (UTC)

@ㅂㄱㅇ: Such a differentiation does not exist in English. Usually, 대교 as well as 교 is translated as bridge. For the Incheon Bridge, it is also the name of the website http://www.incheonbridge.com/. Can you think of a famous 교? Anyways, on Korean traffic signs, bridges are described in Korean and also in Latin writing, with the name outlined by the rules of the revised romanization and the describing terms like bridge or street in English. So, if there was an 인천교, it actually should also be Incheon Bridge. --Christian140 (talk) 13:07, 31 January 2017 (UTC)

@ㅂㄱㅇ: I see. Are you near such a ~gyo and can see the traffic sign? I think it must be also "(Incheon) Bridge" on the sign. Do these ~gyos even meet the notability criteria of wikipedia? If not, then there would be no articles and it wouldn't be much of a problem. Anyways, this needs more insight from other users I guess. I've been reading (and amending) so many Korean cuisine related articles with native (non-Sino-Korean) names, where unofficial (perhaps analogically reformated) hanja characters are listed. Arisu today is basically Seoul's tap water. [4] In the past, because of copper pipes or other reasons, Koreans were not supposed to drink tap water. However, over the past decades, the Korean and Seouler government improved a lot and all the buildings built after 1990 or earlier (or something) have modern pipes. Therefore, in most buildings of Seoul, tap water can be drunken, however, the thought that tap water is dangerous so prevalent among Koreans, that the city of Seoul decided to promote tap water. Minor point for possible correction

The article Unification Church in its info box says that the classification is Unification Church of the United States. Grammar information on Korean Verbs page is extremely inaccurate

Hello everyone! Sorry if I'm doing this wrong. This is my first time trying to make any significant changes to a Wikipedia page. Feel free to post (or message me) any tips about how I should be doing this.

Can some folks help clean up the Korean Verbs (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Korean_verbs) page? It's inaccurate to a fairly extreme level. Things as basic as how to create the past tense and make a verb negative (I fixed the negative thing). I don't know enough about linguistics yet to correct a lot of it, but I know enough to see how bad it is. I stumbled upon the page when I was trying to find an explanation of 더냐. When I got here I saw that the explanation couldn't possibly be correct (just from my own knowledge of Korean grammar, as 더 has to do with something you directly observe and 냐 is the question form for indirect reported speech) and then saw that huge portions of the page were inaccurate.

Are images published in KCNA copyrighted?

In Wikimedia Commons there is the following tag for some works by the DPRK that are in the public domain: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Template:PD-North_Korea

Which says that some works are in the public domain, according to the Copyright Law of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, enacted 2001, amended 2006: http://www.wipo.int/edocs/lexdocs/laws/en/kp/kp001en.pdf

This law among other things says:

Article 12 (Exclusion): Documents for state management, current news or information data shall not be the object of copyright unless commercial purpose is pursued.

The language is somewhat vague as to whether the exclusion of copyright of news also applies to news images published by KCNA.

Maybe I am splitting hairs here, but maybe article 14.2 has some bearing on this:

Article 14 (Moral right): The moral right of the copyright owner shall be as follows:
1. the right to determine the publication of their works;
2. the right to make public his name in the works; and
(...)

KCNA-published pictures have no author attribution. Would this be further indication that the DPRK considers them in them to be free of copyright?

I am asking this to the community because I have some interest in uploading images published by KCNA into Wikimedia Commons as I feel there is a lack of imagery on North Korea in numerous wikipedia articles (and I don't see why the broader dissemination of their officially published images would run against their interests, quite the contrary), but want to first seek others' opinions. (Note: this question was originally posted in Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Korea/North Korea, but I have not received any responses. Template:Chaebol

Please can an editor familiar with Korean industry review {{Chaebol}}, especially the recent edits by a previously blocked IP? For example, Tongyang and STX are listed as defunct but their articles suggest that they are still trading. Thanks, Certes (talk) 10:12, 13 September 2017 (UTC)

@Certes: Both of them seem to have some recent trouble but they still seem to exist and trade. The problem with the template is that it has no clear criteria of inclusion. South Korea has over a hundred companies that can be classified as chaebols (this is what our article on chaebol states; britannica claims there are 'more then two dozens'). After a bit more digging, I found out that 'The Fair Trade and Anti-monopoly Law defines the chaebol, and the Fair Trade Commission announces the list of chaebols in April each year'. That article also lists some chaebols but it is unclear why they were chosen, and the list is likely obsolete anyway (it doesn't cite many refs and it is unclear which year(s) it represents). I found this old webpage based on 2002 data that also has a 1997 list of biggest chabols ([5]). I think we need the Fair Trade Commission list to create a proper list year by by year in the article or a list format, with dates, refs, etc. Unfortunately I couldn't find it. A related problem is that even the top cheabols change over time, S. Lew (17 December 2013). The Korean Economic Developmental Path: Confucian Tradition, Affective Network. Springer. pp. 106–. ISBN 978-1-137-34729-9. notes that from 50s to 70s only 2 were stable in Top 10 (Samsung and LG), and Richard R. Nelson (3 June 1993). National Innovation Systems: A Comparative Analysis. Oxford University Press. pp. 363–. ISBN 978-0-19-536043-1. notes this trend of Top 10 changing significantly has continued for the rest of the century. The KFTC list also went through at list one major revision for its definition (see this news piece; [6] states the list dates to 1986 so I wonder how such lists were created before?). Those two (Samsung and LG) have remained likely throughout all time, but any list/template needs updating; the template is particularly problematic because it is unclear because of unknown criteria for selection of companies for it, and I'd suggest it should be AfD as a template based on unclear criteria. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 03:49, 18 October 2017 (UTC)

Korean Wikipedia event
