WP 1.0 bot announcement

Homeschooling on Wikisource

Guten Tag everybody,

If you haven't ever used our sister-project Wikisource, or just need an excuse to get more active, Charlotte Mason is our current Collaboration of the Week, which means posting all her books, poems and writings about homeschooling online for free public consumption. We're definitely going to need help, but just think about what a resource this could be for homeschooling families! Semi-active?/Revive

Well, if there are two of us, I'm willing to get started. The first thing would be a roll call to decide active/inactive members. At the same time, I would like to update all the project pages and update/cleanup major articles under this project. We could also start up the newsletter, but only after the aforementioned activities. Also, I would like to post a notice at the Signpost. Sound good? Yes, it sounds great. I've been spearheading the WikiProject Malaysia revamp and those were the steps I took. To deliver the messages, you might want to try a bot, like ChzzBot so that you won't have to deliver them manually. It's pretty tedious. :) BejinhanTalk 06:44, 1 June 2010 (UTC)

  • The "Hi USERNAMEHERE" might be possible if you're planning to deliver it manually, but if by bot, I doubt that a bot can pick up usernames based on user talk pages. It might be more practical to have it as "Hi! You are receiving this message because you are in WikiProject Homeschooling's member list(link to member list here)." That's just a thought... putting "Hi USERNAMEHERE" is also possible because it'll be more personal then.
  • I think that 2 weeks should be sufficient. A month is a bit too long.

Okay...the BASEPAGENAME is supposed to pick up for the page it's posted on. For instance, I used that tag and because the sandbox is in my userspace, it added my name. You think it wouldn't do that with a bot? I'll set the time for two weeks and will add the sentence about being listed as members. PrincessofLlyr royal court 12:20, 4 June 2010 (UTC)
Okay, if that's the case, then I think it should be fine. It might also help if you post a notice(re-phrased from your user talk messages) on the different projects' talk pages like the education portal talk page and others. BejinhanTalk 12:26, 4 June 2010 (UTC)

I hate waiting. As far as that newsletter goes, it appears to fairly uncomplicated. The archives show just a short list of news. So I figured an announcement about the revival (or attempt at), general note about number of active contributors, update about collaboration of July (or request for input into that), and maybe a note about open tasks, places where members could contribute. I'm in. Some of the editors here will probably know me as the webmaster of a site on homeschooling. I watch these articles more than actively edit them, to make sure to keep well within the bounds of the Wikipedia conflict of interest policy, but I'm glad to be part of the project and have several of the main homeschooling articles on my watchlist. Great! The most pressing matters are publicity for the project to attract more active members and working on our various articles. Alternative education is our collaboration for this month. Newsletter-update

I'm working on finalizing the newsletter for July as time is running out. I've put in the roll call and revamp news. Am waiting for the July Collaboration of the Month, which seems to be Alternative education. The newsletter would be ready for delivery by 29th. No later than that. Thanks! Yeah, I think that should work fine. Projects deliver newsletters to the active members only. If you're going to deliver it manually, don't forget to change the {{{Delivered by}}}. :) Sorry I can't be on more often nowadays... I'm having some RL issues that need to be iron out first. No August newsletter was prepared. Seeing that not much work is being done on Alternative education, why not extend the Collab to 2 months and have a bi-monthly newsletter? That means, the next newsletter will be in September. Also, don't forget that the nom of the collab has to play his/her role in working on the article. It's his/her responsibility per nom. Bimonthly sounds great. There really wasn't any news for a newsletter, so I hate taking the time just to clutter up people's talk pages. Also support extending the collab. Believe me, I've been wracking (racking?) my brain about that one. No more creative ideas yet. I've plastered it all over my userpage, invited every user I think might be remotely interested, contacted the Signpost....I'm just out of ideas at this point. Signpost did not work for me too. :p You could have a competition where the user with the highest referrals and the user with the most successful referrals get awarded. I don't know if this will work for this, so far I've not implemented it for WikiProject Malaysia yet. Bejinhan talks 14:26, 2 August 2010 (UTC)

Do any of you frequent any of the big homeschooling forums, like Vegsource? I wonder if going the other way around and finding homeschoolers who edit Wikipedia instead of Wikipedians who are also homeschoolers might bear any fruit. (Personally, I spend most of my online forum time on Ravelry, whose only homeschooling forum is rather inactive, so I'm not of particular help there.) Princess Lirin (talk) 20:23, 2 August 2010 (UTC)
@PrincessofLlyr That's a good idea, but I was at the Reward Board page recently, and saw some stagnant requests. It's possible and we can give it a try... but it has got to be someone interested in homeschooling.
@Princess Lirin Nope, I do the Sonlight forums because that was the curriculum I was using when homeschooling, but as far as I know, most of them there aren't interested in editing Wikipedia. :) Maybe we could recruit new homeschooling users... that's another idea. Homeschooling articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Homeschooling articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.

We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

Existing Curriculum/Education Wiki?

Is there an existing wiki that presents an organized curriculum for home schooling. What I have in mind is a complete curriculum, going from beginning to high school, built as a wiki, with options along the way for various approaches.

It would be free, complete, professional, open to the best education minds to contribute, and available to EVERY child and parent who can get an internet connection. Given that there is no one best way to educate every child, it would have options and alternatives, but still be guided and organized.

Much of what I have found so far lacks any organization or road map.

Any ideas?

Wikipedia would be a WONDERFUL place to put such a thing, given that it has a brand name and a presence on the net.
