Two birds, one stone

This is a proposal for the backburner, since I want to decruftify and cleanup Covenant (Halo) before I move to the worse-off articles, but how about we recreate the Halo universe article and rename it something like Factions of Halo. This would have a link out to all of the different articles, except we would merge in the United Nations Space Command article and the Forerunner article into the Factions article. The reason I propose this is those two articles aren't going to have much out of universe info in terms of reception etc, and the Factions article could contain reception to the Halo universe and summation of reaction to the Covies, Flood which actually have a bit written about them (I guess the UNSC isn't that interesting to write about.) Thoughts? David Fuchs (talk) 22:39, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

Absolutely, those two articles need to be merged somewhere since like you said they wont stand on their own. I might suggest merging in the details of the soldier article in there too if it fits, but otherwise this is a good idea, we could probably get a GA out of it. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 01:43, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
Certainly, soldier article? - Caribbean~H.Q. 01:46, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
LOL I mean the SPARTAN article :) Judgesurreal777 (talk) 01:47, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
Well, I started a skeleton on userspace, where we need to put in all the info before we merge, so I guess that's as good a place as any. David Fuchs (talk) 22:55, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

Member activity

Our member list is substantial yet I hardly think that everyone in that list is active. So why don't we use MelonBot? It reads a list of members then ranks them by their most recent edit to a Halo related page. This would mean we don't have such a large list on the front page and people looking for active members can easily find it. We would need to put the list on a separate subpage and the articles list on a subpage but thats all I think. James086Talk | Email 08:12, 6 March 2008 (UTC)

That sounds like a good idea- many people just sign up and don't actually do much (I think there's you, me, pep, carib, judge, TKD, at the most) so it will help trim it automatically, go for it! Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 11:42, 11 March 2008 (UTC)

List of official Halo series media Featured List candidate

Resolved

List of official Halo series media has been nominated for Featured List status. Please comment, etc. Thanks! FightingStreet (talk) 18:39, 6 March 2008 (UTC)

Well it passed. Should we tag it as a featured list on the talk page banner or just leave it as a featured article? We would only have 1 featured list so it would create a category with 1 item in it. Basically, is it worth it? I don't have any preference. James086Talk | Email 08:02, 21 March 2008 (UTC)
I'd leave it as FA for our categorizing purposes; it's FL on VG and project-wide, so I think it's fine the way it is. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 11:44, 21 March 2008 (UTC)

Just an update

Resolved

Just so people know, Martin O'Donnell is at GAN (on hold for now, minor things), and Characters of Halo passed GA (no real comments, so that’s not too helpful, although I am sure the entire thing needs a copyedit if we ever want to get it to FA.) That means Gravemind is the weak link in our possible Characters of Halo featured topic; as stated above we need more info on design and reception; I’ll try and scrape the barrel for more. Also, as an aside, I have revamped Bungie Studios in an effort to get it up to GA; take a look, I think it is mostly complete (I’m still tinkering/expanding the Culture section.) Oh, and we now only have three stub articles: Jason Jones, Michael Salvatori, and Halo: Chronicles. Seeing as Chronicles will not be coming out for a while, that means only two articles that really need improvement. Not sure how much is out there, but it would be nice to destubify those if we can. Cheers, Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 21:45, 10 March 2008 (UTC)

I scrapped the Jones article and rewrote it using references I found...it's way better, but what is there is about the extent of what I found. I would change the stub rating if it weren't still so short :) Perhaps someone else can find some more references and interviews. I worked on Halo Chronicles a bit, cant find a damn thing, but I might search again for some Salvatori, please post anything you find on the talk page so we can work on it. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 15:45, 11 March 2008 (UTC)
Well, Chronicles will no doubt pump up into a respectable article soon enough when they actually give us info, so no worries. I'll take another look at Mike, see if I can't find anything. I'm currently burning through the Bungie podcasts, they haven't said much about Jones except in ancillary, but I'll take another looksee. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 20:42, 11 March 2008 (UTC)

Memberlist statistics

MelonBot has compiled a set of statistics for this project's member list, which may be useful in future project collaborations. Check out the statistics and what they mean. MelonBot (STOP!) 11:41, 15 March 2008 (UTC)

So what should be our threshold for removing members? Obviously those with no edits, but what about those who haven't edited in a while (say, within a year?) Move them to inactive? Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 12:52, 15 March 2008 (UTC)

ARG merge

What so you all about merging Iris (game) and I Love Bees into ARG section of Halo (series)? Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 21:42, 19 March 2008 (UTC)

I guess if there isn't enough reliable sources for them to be on their own as GA's or FA's, fine. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 23:00, 19 March 2008 (UTC)
I did find a scrap of info from Bungie about ILB in a video, but I don't think that there's much else. It'll be a long section in the series article, but I think better than two poor articles. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 14:27, 20 March 2008 (UTC)
Sounds like a good idea :) Judgesurreal777 (talk) 16:29, 20 March 2008 (UTC)
Merging the articles make sense. Though I would merge I Love Bees into Halo 2 and Iris into Marketing for Halo 3. Not that more content can't be put into ARG section of the series article, but it just seems to me that they apply more to the separate games that they marketed. I'm not completely opposed to merging them into the series article though. My two cents. (Guyinblack25 talk 21:40, 20 March 2008 (UTC))

Help?

I'm trying to get Halo: Contact Harvest to FA, but I appear to have hit a brick wall: I can't find any sources for reception. Publisher's Weekly may or may not have a review, but it requires a subscription. All the sci-fi sites don't have it. I've had an easier time finding reception for all the older Halo novels, but for whatever reason this one isn't getting much attention. Do you think anyone else could take a stab at finding good sources, in print or online? Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 01:28, 5 April 2008 (UTC)

Same here, at least Yahoo!'s search engine isn't bringing any useful results outside those already in there (for the most part the 1-UP Q & A). - Caribbean~H.Q. 02:15, 5 April 2008 (UTC)
I found this which says about a 20 page preview of the book: "if you're a fan of overly-descriptive novels, full to the brim with nigh-impenetrable military jargon and acronyms, this one's just calling out for you." although they haven't read the whole novel it is critical reception. I will look again later but I need to go now. James086Talk | Email 05:31, 5 April 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the find! Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 21:20, 5 April 2008 (UTC)
Another; more positive. And this time it's a review of the whole book. [1] Also include a counter to the kotaku link: "He is descriptive, but not overly so;". But it means that the level of description was a point of interest to both reviewers. James086Talk | Email 09:55, 6 April 2008 (UTC)
Not very useful for a quote or commentary on the novel but a positive review [2]. "very rewarding read if you play the games at all. Its made me go back and play Halo CE all over again," James086Talk | Email 10:02, 6 April 2008 (UTC)
I've got the first link, I'll see if I can do more with it... I'm just worried about reliable sources (Xbox360Wire appears to be a blog.) Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 14:06, 6 April 2008 (UTC)
Is Kotaku a reliable source? just asking because I have avoided using it in the past due to its blog-like nature. - Caribbean~H.Q. 06:01, 8 April 2008 (UTC)
It is, but just like Joystiq if they're reporting something that's been talked about elsewhere, it's usually better to actually cite the original source. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 11:35, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

Seasons of Red versus Blue

We have a list for each season, is that really necessary? Couldn't we have one list and try to feature it? Just a thought. Also, there appear to be two other episode articles for their tv special and their PSA's, perhaps those could be incorporated too. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 02:44, 6 April 2008 (UTC)

I guess the list of TV episodes makes it clear we can do it, and I personally would merge them together. As for the specials/PSAs, perhaps merge them together to keep the other list a little cleaner, thus having two lists instead of seven? Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 14:02, 6 April 2008 (UTC)
Sounds good to me! :) Judgesurreal777 (talk) 04:56, 8 April 2008 (UTC)
It's going to be a slog to convert all the episodes, but I took a stab at what one episode would look like on the Season 1 page here: [3] It would be a long list, no doubt, but as we go we can clean out some of the cruft and the original research, and hopefully figure out what else we can add in. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 22:56, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
Also, so the discussion can be centralized, I've posted a topic at Talk:Red vs. Blue >here< Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 00:45, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

GA for Gravemind?

Resolved

I have thoroughly scoured the internet and I cannot find more critical reception for Gravemind. At the moment the article is in pretty good shape, I think we should just nominate it for GA status mentioning that it is comprehensive coverage of the reception (can't get more comprehensive than everything). Thoughts? James086Talk | Email 10:37, 15 April 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, might as well. I think Gravemind will be one of those articles who will peak out at GA, but no reason not to get him there. I posted it at WP:GAN, now to remove the backlog by reviewing so it gets done faster (then featured topic #2, here we come.) Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 11:32, 15 April 2008 (UTC)

I had a thought; merge the three soundtrack articles here, add information on other occasions of using the music (concerts or tours if there are any) and build it up to FA. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 16:29, 15 April 2008 (UTC)

Hmm... could you provide some examples of articles following that format? While if the articles couldn't survive on their own, there's a fair amount of detail that can be gleaned from each, and I feel that they can function has seperate articles with the 'Audio' section of the Halo (series) article linking them together. I've begun working on Halo 3 Original Soundtrack, and I've got the skeleton of three-plus paragraphs for reception/awards/performances, and another two paragraphs for expansion in the up-sections. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 22:37, 15 April 2008 (UTC)
Music of Final Fantasy VIII, or something like that. But my idea is only if we can't build them up on their own, and you seem to be doing well with it...lets revisit this if it seems they can't stand on their own or could only ever be GA's. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 15:11, 16 April 2008 (UTC)

Thoughts? Judgesurreal777 (talk) 15:54, 16 April 2008 (UTC)

Well, there's a lot of stuff to talk about... for Halo novels and some of the others, I think if we expand the relevant sections in Halo (series), it can serve as the starting (lead) article in many of the cases, rather than spinning off the content. Also, we don’t *have* to have topics for everything. I’m not sure topics for Halo/Halo 2/Halo 3 would be worth it. Also, “Bungie” isn’t a really good fit since Rampancy is sort of an addendum, not mentioned in the main article, and Halo.Bungie.Org is a fan-site, so not directly associated. As for characters and factions… perhaps a ‘Characters of Halo’ (4 articles) and ‘Factions of Halo’ (3 articles) would be more specific and more logical topic divisions, although they do overlap. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 17:17, 16 April 2008 (UTC)
Also, I’d rather not have the same image for all of them (I know they are placeholders) so I would want to make a good image for each of them if we ended up making them FTC. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 17:19, 16 April 2008 (UTC)
With Gravemind as a GA we could jump ahead and nominate a FT on the characters alone, then the only thing preventing us from having a second topic would be the factions article, which is in a rather good condition when compared with other of the stuff we have taken to GA. - Caribbean~H.Q. 18:29, 16 April 2008 (UTC)
Nice, I meant this to be a discussion piece to see where we could go from where we are :) Judgesurreal777 (talk) 19:21, 16 April 2008 (UTC)
I believe there was some discussion of merging I love Bees, which would eliminate the Halo 2 Featured Topic, as both remaining articles would be in separate topics already. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 19:26, 16 April 2008 (UTC)
Ok, I switched out the novels and music lead article with the series article, eliminated the Halo 2 topic, which assumes I love bees will be merged, broke the characters/factions topic into two topics, and cutting all the articles from Bungie except the founders. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 19:44, 16 April 2008 (UTC)
I like this format, although we should probably exclude the unreleased games for now. - Caribbean~H.Q. 19:54, 16 April 2008 (UTC)
Well that's fine, though we could get them added with a check mark next to them showing they aren't released yet. I do think we should add the list of Halo media though, it seems like an appropriate place for it. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 20:01, 16 April 2008 (UTC)
Looks good. For I Love Bees, I'm not actually sure we should merge it yet-I did find some good info, so it might work as a small article; in any case it won't get merged for a while. As for machinima listed above, I would like to merge the characters and plots of the minor series into the parent articles and improve them from them (most likely topping out at GA). The Seasons of RvB will take a long time to convert to list format, so that's a long term goal. Factions of Halo is about 75% complete, I just need to add more info about reception and add a paragraph about the Covenant and Flood development, maybe I'll get that ready for GA by the end of the month... for the icons, I might try my hand at a free-use clip-arty Guilty Spark for 'Characters' FT... I'd say as soon as Gravemind passes GA we get our second Featured Topic under our belt :P Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 20:55, 16 April 2008 (UTC)

For the factions FT we would need at least 2 featured articles so it's not so close but the characters one should be ready soon. I would like to see the books FT so I'm focusing my efforts that way. Another possible long term goal could be a "Halo media" FT encompassing all of the media (with articles obviously) in List of Halo media but that's well down the track. James086Talk | Email 13:54, 17 April 2008 (UTC)

Flood (Halo) is still lacking a bit, but whenever I get around to it I want to decruftify and add to Covenant (Halo) and push for that FA. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 19:38, 17 April 2008 (UTC)

...for something kinda different

On an unrelated note, in between my edits (I hope to put the Halo 3 Soundtrack up at FAC soon) I've been tinkering with possible free images to use for the above featured topics. You can see my first 343GS draft above (I drew him a little slanted, and tried to do some arty perspective, but I think I'll try a more straight-on version as well) but the issue is that they have to be small. Spark is a good, compact figure to use for 'Characters' (if you have any other ideas I'd be fine with hearing them), but what do you think would be representative for 'Factions'? It can't be a combination of elements since it's too small... people or units are too elongated... and weapons don't exactly seem to be the most representative for the topic. I was thinking maybe a vessel (High Charity is distinctive) but I'm open to suggestions (it would be helpful if its something I can manipulate so it's not entirely derivative.) --Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 00:44, 17 April 2008 (UTC)

To be honest the mini-Hunter is kind of cute. - Caribbean~H.Q. 23:35, 23 April 2008 (UTC)
Why thank you... the problem with such small icons is obviously the size, and the less square the image the more detail that will be lost in the scaling (I was thinking about doing a Grunt or an Infection form, but they are a bit more complicated than I'd have wanted...) When me and James get done cleaning up the Halo novels I'll have to figure out what I want to do for that FT... (Graphics is fun to take your mind off writing!) Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 02:17, 24 April 2008 (UTC)
Speaking of novels can someone take a look at Halo: The Fall of Reach and trim the plot section. I've already trimmed a bit off but I can't seem to decide what else to cut, perhaps someone else can see what needs to go. I think the Hunter would suffice for Factions of Halo, Hunters are are a race rather than a specific character so its fitting I suppose. I can't think of anything more suitable. James086Talk | Email 11:43, 25 April 2008 (UTC)
The plot's size seems ok to me, however I would merge the first two paragraphs. - Caribbean~H.Q. 12:16, 25 April 2008 (UTC)

I think Michael Salvatori, Joseph Staten, or Martin O'Donnell could fit into either the Bungie catagory. And/or Savatori and O'Donnell could fit in with the Music of Halo catagory. Thoughts? Blackngold29 19:54, 7 July 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, they could, except for Salvatori (not a member of Bungie) Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 20:17, 7 July 2008 (UTC)
Ah, I see. Is there any further thought on his AfD? Blackngold29 21:24, 7 July 2008 (UTC)

Move the topics

Resolved

Since it seems that it might be useful to retain the topic boxes, were could we move them so they don't get archived? Judgesurreal777 (talk) 02:21, 24 April 2008 (UTC)

Eh, it shouldn't be too hard to retrieve them from the archives, should it? We don't have massive long lists, in any case. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 01:39, 25 April 2008 (UTC)
Or just make a subpage like Wikipedia:WikiProject Halo/possible FTs and copy them there. Even if they are archived it's not like they're deleted, it's just an extra click to get to them. James086Talk | Email 03:04, 25 April 2008 (UTC)

Merging of Red vs Blue pages

Uhm, just recently the Special Episodes of Red vs Blue list got the episodes of Out of Mind and Recovery One added to them. Looking here it's apparently been on the backburner for a bit, but there was never any note on the page itself that this was going to happen until someone did it so a few of us got a bit thrown by it, since it was done without discussion there or, by the looks of things, here. We're just wondering what the deal is - the list page of special episodes was intended for the non-canon episodes, adding canon episodes of miniseries throws that off. Also, the two miniseries have their own pages with enough out-of-universe stuff to sustain them. Adding them to the list page will just set all that back for no readily apparent reason. And lastly, with the addition of these long, full-episode summary subheadings, the page gets unnecessarily long and cluttered.

At the moment I think it warrants further discussion before it gets finalised, because those of us not in the WikiProject haven't heard anything about this at all. Dac (talk) 10:37, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

I posted a notice on the Red vs. Blue pages, and only one other user discussed it. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 19:41, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
On which page? It wasn't on the ones relating to the merge. Dac (talk) 23:24, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
I put it, ironically enough, on the main page so that people might see it: Talk:Red_vs._Blue#Merge_together_episodes_list. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 00:56, 14 May 2008 (UTC)
How typical. I was the one replying to that and I don't remember it at all. Well I feel sheepish. Ugh. Well, anyway, having seen what the Specials page looks like with OoM and RecOne tossed in, I still think that that merge, at least, is unnecessary. Dac (talk) 14:05, 14 May 2008 (UTC)
But are they really featurable in their present form? Judgesurreal777 (talk) 02:20, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
I believe so, yes. Further expansion wouldn't go amiss but merging them would not improve anything. Dac (talk) 08:51, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

Aye, Aye, cap'n! I've found a dozen or so sources in print or online (thank you, Google News and ProQuest!) but if anyone can find reliable sources about the actual gameplay and plot, those are what the article really needs. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 00:15, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

Sir, is there anything for me, sir? I haven't officially joined the project (yet), but I am quite impressed by what has been done here. I noticed that Marketing for Halo 3 was on the To-do at the top of the page, but don't really know what the final result should look like. I have the first three novels, and would be willing to work on First Strike or the Flood. Anything in that area that you want? Blackngold29 01:25, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

I was thinking of improving The Flood and First Strike when I get time in the uni holidays. I'd definitely be happy to get some help! If you're not in the mood for article-writing, I Love Bees needs references in the plot section. Also Halo Original Soundtrack and Halo 2 Original Soundtrack could be made featured for a music featured topic, they're not bad at the moment but they need some work before GA or FA status. On a separate note, why hasn't Halo (series) been nominated for FA yet. I think it's ready. James086Talk | Email 11:19, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
I'm kinda sidelined with Riven at FAC, so someone else can scoop up the article and nominate it, if they want. I don't need another star... :P Either way I'll try to help out, but I suggest before nominating we get the help of some non-project guys to help up copyedit, I'm sure that's what we're weakest at. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 11:55, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

I'll try to have Halo (series) nominated for FAC by the end of the day. I have all three soundtracks, I think an expansion of the "Reception" on the original one will be a good place to start. Thanks! Blackngold29 16:08, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

Machinima

Resolved

To what degree do we cover the Machinima articles because I just noticed Category:Red vs. Blue characters (they don't have the WP:HALO talk page banner at the moment). I'm not sure whether they qualify as Halo articles. Our scope is "articles relating to the Halo series and all its spin-offs" but does RvB count as a spin-off or a fan creation? I'm not sure whether or not to include so I brought it here. Also seeing as 2 of them are already GAs I sort of feel like WP:HALO is taking credit for other's work (our list of GAs would increase without any extra work), just something else to consider. James086Talk | Email 04:17, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

I was thinking about that to; that is, cut the machinima articles (FTC, the Codex/Heretic, TSL, and RvB) out of our scope. It simplifies our work, and I can't say I'm very knowledgeable about them either. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 14:53, 26 May 2008 (UTC)
Do we just want to put it to a vote? Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 20:19, 26 May 2008 (UTC)
I have no thoughts on this one, I could go either way...I due wonder about cutting Red versus Blue though... Judgesurreal777 (talk) 20:58, 26 May 2008 (UTC)
Thinking about it I think that might be a good idea. They aren't related to the Halo universe, they just use Halo as their production medium. I think we should wait for more discussion before we actually take any action however as this might be controversial. Removing a quarter of the articles from our scope may not go down well. James086Talk | Email 00:24, 27 May 2008 (UTC)
Hey! It shrinks our scope on articles I have no interest in, that should be good enough for you! :P (joking) But yes, let's just leave this discussion open for a while, and if no one else shows up we'll cut and run. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 18:20, 27 May 2008 (UTC)
Since they only sparingly use the Halo universe, the machinima articles don't really need to be covered here. That's my vote. Dac (talk) 23:35, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
Since no one else popped up to say 'nay', i went ahead and removed the articles; that brings our scope to 40 articles total, which means we have (by my count) 50% of the articles GA, A, or FA-class currently. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 19:15, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

Just wanted to say thanks so far. I was nervous after there were so many problems brought up so quickly and didn't think it had a chance of passing; but many have stepped up and nearly all issues so far have been addressed. Keep up the good work! Blackngold29 05:38, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

Does anyone have any suggestions about this article? We've been fixing a lot (if not all) of the issues raised, but they continue to pile up. Should the article be withdrawn? Blackngold29 07:19, 15 June 2008 (UTC)

I don't think it will pass either. It seems I was wrong in thinking it ready. However we could leave it up until someone fails it. Even though FAC is not peer review we can get some more constructive criticism from the process. James086Talk | Email 07:52, 15 June 2008 (UTC)

The result of the FAC is "Not promoted". I should've looked over it more throughly and made sure it was had a good copy-edit at the least before nominating it. I'll blame it on my inexperience with FAs, hopefully I'll pick a better one next time. That being said, the article did gain a good amount of improvments from the comments; we should continue to address the outstanding ones. Should we continue to concentrate on the article now (peer review?, copy-edit?) or try concentrating on another article for a while? I think it helps when everyone works together on an article, perhaps we should collaborate more often. Thoughts? Thanks. Blackngold29 01:31, 16 June 2008 (UTC)

The Odyssey

Resolved

Should The Odyssey (Incubus song) be included in the project? It was basically written for the game. Blackngold29 00:28, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

Personally i don't see why it couldn't just be redirected to Halo 2 OST, but there you go. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 17:02, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
