Translation of the names of prefecture-level cities (地级市)

Are there any guidelines for translating names of different administrative divisions, particularly prefecture-level cities? For example, how should 鄂尔多斯市 be translated? User:LlywelynII has been using "Ordos Prefecture" and the like, but I think this usage is uncommon ("Ordos City" vs. "Ordos Prefecture"; "Meizhou City" vs. "Meizhou Prefecture") and not reflective of 市 in the Chinese. When I see "prefecture" for a prefecture-level city, I've been changing them to "city" or removing the division name altogether. 地级市 is almost always translated as prefecture-level city. "Prefecture" is incorrect. Many prefecture-level cities were former prefectures (地区), and the prefecture-level city designation is considered an upgrade in status, connoting a higher level of development. I basically agree with Zanhe. If it were up to me, I might translate 地级市 as prefecture, but there seems to be a generally accepted convention to make prefecture-level city. – Greg Pandatshang (talk) 01:16, 3 February 2018 (UTC)

Large-scale city improvement

In Haikou, there is a large-scale improvement underway. Right now, it involves the government painting main street buildings and facades to make them look better. Is this happening in major cities all over the country? If so, it should be in the article. I cannot find sources that clearly say what is going on. Anyone? Many thanks. Character representations of names of overseas Chinese referred to as "Cantonese", "Mandarin", etc?

I was just skimming our article on Allan Fung, and noticed that it includes a representation of his Chinese name in Chinese characters, with no accompanying romanization for his Chinese given name (obviously his family name is "Fung", but "偉傑" doesn't look like a retrofit transcription of the English name "Allan").

Obviously I think the Chinese name, if it can be sourced, should be accompanied by one or more appropriate transcriptions, and if he identifies with a Cantonese-speaking community then it should be Cantonese, but that would involve research and possible BLP concerns. I was rather considering just making the technical fix of referring to his Chinese name as being "Chinese" rather than specifically Cantonese, when there is apparently nothing specifically Cantonese about the name that is there now, but decided to ask here first.

Thoughts? Has this come up before?

I see that the lead has his name as "Allan Wai-Ket Fung", which is an adequate Cantonese transliteration of 偉傑. I agree on all other points, and there should be no reason to call written characters Cantonese for the most part, and definitely not in this case. _dk (talk) 02:27, 10 May 2018 (UTC)

About Tianxin Pavilion, "十大中国历史文化名楼" - UNESCO links

Hi all,
While editing Tianxin Pavilion, I noticed there was an assertion that it as one of "Ten Famous Chinese Historical and Cultural Towers and Pavilions" / "十大中国历史文化名楼" / and so on.

As far as I can see, the application to have the pavilion listed as a world heritage site has been stalled since 2012.

You are right. The first ref in Tianxin_Pavilion says
As another news 十大名楼集体申遗暂搁浅_2012-11-05(in Chinese) says: "十大名楼集体申遗暂搁浅/The plans to apply for world heritage for the 'ten famous building' have been temporarily shelved", and this news didn't give the reason why they stopped temporarily. After a google search with key word "十大名楼集体申遗/ten famous building applying for world heritage toghter", there is no more news about this matter after November, 2012.
So, I think: they are not the Ten Famous Chinese buildings, They are just prepare to apply for the world heritage. And This plan is terminated permanently.——Woclass (talk) 16:14, 10 May 2018 (UTC)

I was editing Draft:Oneacreland.com, and I tracked down any possible sources for that draft, short of perusing archive.org, that could be WP:RS, and put them in a list as WP:General references. However I think the sources, and by extension the draft still might not pass muster for ever being worthy of an article. Would you think they are enough to establish any notability? Prince of Rui of Ming dynasty

Prince of Rui of Ming dynasty is a recently created page (by Tyrannosaurus rex (talk · contribs)) with no sourcing; several similar (unsourced) pages have been created previously. I have several concerns; beyond the lack of references, the article title doesn't seem right, and the usage of "peerage" seems like it may be a mis-translation or mis-interpretation. Chinese translation

Hello, I've been researching information regarding the character Kazuya Mishima in regards to his creation and I found this Chinese website. From what Google translate appears to say, Kazuya was influenced by the famous Yukio Mishima but I need better a better translation to see if there's more (for some reason Google Translate also translates the character's first name). The article mentioned off-hand that "The development team has revealed that Kazuya Mishima is based on the famous Japanese writer Yukio Mishima, even taking after his surname." WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

@RoySmith: Without commenting on the strength of verification of each claim for now, the Mingpao.com (Ming Pao) source(s) should be fine; the stheadline.com sources are Headline Daily, which happens to be noted by our article as a tabloid, but has yet to appear on the Reliable sources Noticeboard, unlike the Daily Mail. Nanjing University

Can someone take a look at the history section of Nanjing University. The article is making a big claim on its early history that is completely unsourced. Whatever institution or institutions that might have existed in the periods, what relation does it (or they) have to the university itself? Template:Years in the Qing dynasty

Just created this template:

What's a good way to format the navbox? I decided its a more historiographically accurate to separate them out into emperor eras as opposed to decades. But beyond that it seems like ten years doesn't fill the width of the navbox very well. Also I'd like some help eventually populating every year at some point... Removal of simplified names

@N. Wang: This editor has been removing simplified names from a number of articles, for example: [2][3][4]. I know at least one of the removals was incorrect, and I'm told at least one other was also incorrect. I don't know enough Chinese to judge these. Can someone take a look? @Kendall-K1: Hello Kendall-K1 and any other users who might be involved. I just wanted to make a brief reply back in regards to my most recent edits. I may have missed it, but I was under the impression that it'd be more accurate to have (only) traditional Chinese over simplified Chinese, especially for those articles related to aspects specific to Hong Kong/Cantonese matters, which are specifically primarily in traditional Chinese in terms of cultural, historical, and social points. I am a Chinese speaker (for both Cantonese and Mandarin), hence my judgment in the matter. Sorry for any inconvenience in advance. N. Wang (talk)
The province of Guangdong (ie. the "Canton" in "Cantonese") uses Cantonese and Simplified Chinese, so do parts of the Chinese diaspora in Southeast Asia. Dim sum is also not a specifically Hong Kong thing but one that originated in Guangzhou, which now uses Simplified Chinese. In any case, we currently include both traditional and simplified Chinese even for HK/MA/TW matters in the {{Chinese}} infobox. _dk (talk) 17:17, 16 August 2018 (UTC)

Just want to give a small bit of feedback that there are multiple articles that do include Traditional Chinese with Simplified Chinese AND that it was already mentioned by @Underbar dk: to have both. N. Wang (talk)
I specifically mentioned the template {{Chinese}} can have both, but the article in question currently does not include the template. My comment was merely about the usage of that template, and I do not agree with adding traditional Chinese in a "native_name" field in other templates when the article's subject used only simplified Chinese in its native country. _dk (talk) 18:28, 24 August 2018 (UTC)

I have collected a bunch of China-related articles which contain bad links to WP:DAB pages, ranging from ancient history to the present day, for which expert attention is needed. (The list is not exhaustive: I find new bad links of this sort, not necessarily China-related, every single day.) To find those links, search for 'disam' in main text or for '{{d' in edit mode. (NB - some articles contain more than one bad link.) If you manage to solve any of these puzzles, remove the {{dn}} tag and post {{done}} here.

Does Nanjing No.13 Middle School have a senior high school section?

Would anybody please check if Nanjing No.13 Middle School have a senior high school? An AFD was filed against the article here: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Nanjing No.13 Middle School on the basis that it is a junior high school 初中 and therefore ineligible for a Wikipedia article. Unfortunately in China they use the English translation "Middle School" when they're really meaning 中学 which means "Secondary School", and many 中学 have senior high 高中 sections. I suspect this one does but I want to find confirmation. The introduction of the school is here so perhaps there's a clue there.

If there's any page talking about the students taking the gaokao (the university entrance exams) it must be a senior high; students who haven't entered senior high yet take the zhongkao (senior high entrance exams). @John from Idegon: WhisperToMe (talk) 00:20, 10 September 2018 (UTC)

Yes there's a page here which talks about the school's zhongkao and gaokao results. Also browsing around their home page there are numerous references to senior high students, such as Senior high third year students attending conference and interestingly theres an international department (I guess they teach Canadian curriculum courses) whose site is here and although the English still says Middle school the Chinese says 高中. Merger discussion on Ice Creamusume

I've started a discussion at Talk:Ice Creamusume#Merger discussion to merge Wu Si-hsuan, Chung An-chi, Tseng Te-ping, Chao Kuo-jung, Chiu Tsui-ling, Ku Yun, and 1st Zui Bang! to Ice Creamusume. These people do not have any notability beyond being in Ice Creamusume and do not need to have their own article in my opinion. 1st Zui Bang! also holds no notability with no sales and ranking information. RfC on edit war

Your help would be greatly appreciated in solving the deadlock over at the History of the Communist Party of China article. The conflict involves a section titled Feminist Views, which following discussion was transplanted to the Ideology of the Communist Party of China article, where it appears to fit in better. @Audacity: I don't think so (and most people outside mainland China and the diaspora have probably never used WeChat, so WeChat users are probably very rare on enwiki). There is a Discord group and there are IRC channels (incidentally, the Chinese Wikipedia advertises an IRC channel but not a WeChat group). Jc86035 (talk) 14:42, 25 October 2018 (UTC)

Category:Chinese emigrants to Taiwan

I know this is a minefield, and I hardly want to be involved in such a mess, but does anyone else see a problem with the subcategories in Category:Chinese emigrants to Taiwan? I came across this whilst filling Category:People of the Northern Expedition...people like Bai Chongxi and Yan Xishan are listed as 'Taiwanese', which feels like both an absurdity and an anachronism...if you told any of these people that they were 'Taiwanese', I wonder what they'd say? I think I know the answer. Is there anything we can do about this, or is the RoC/Taiwan craziness going to make it impossible? RGloucester — ☎ 21:58, 11 October 2018 (UTC)

I would go as far as recommending this category for deletion for the anachronisms you pointed out and the NPOV violations involved, i.e. the implication that Taiwan is not a part of China. CaradhrasAiguo (leave language) 22:08, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
  • Oppose I didn't create the category but I created all the subcategories. Before I did my work, I remember it only had Chiang Kai-shek, Chiang Ching-kuo and a couple of other names. "Taiwanese from ABC" in this case is of course understood as someone from mainland China who permanently (at least for a long period of time) settled in Taiwan island (I don't think there are any Kinmen/Matsu/Penghu cases) either before or after 1940s. "Chinese" in categories should be separate from "Taiwanese". Trust me, I have not intention to impose NPOV but there are no better solutions. Will it help anyone to combine Category:Taiwanese baseball players with Category:Chinese baseball players? Anachronism is not an issue, and what Bai Chongxi thinks is not important. Yelü Dashi would not consider himself an emperor of Qara Khitai, but that doesn't mean we will put him in Category:Liao dynasty emperors, because for all intents and purposes Liao dynasty should be considered completely separate from Qara Khitai. It's impossible to ask every person alive or deceased what they identify with, so let's just stick with the obvious: Bai Chongxi lived in Taiwan as a citizen, therefore he was a Taiwanese. 'Taiwanese' implies regional origins in Taiwan, as opposed to Cantonese or Shandongese or whatever. At that point in history, there was no 'Taiwanese' in the manner you referred to. If Bai was a 'Taiwanese citizen', after he fled to Taiwan, I guess he had been a Taiwanese citizen on the mainland, because his citizenship did not change upon his flight. He was not a 'Taiwanese'...he was a Guangxi person, which would've been listed on his identity papers, who had fled to Taiwan, but his original identity did not change to Taiwanese, as he still remained in the same country, 'China', and only fled to Taiwan out of necessity. The 'modern' use of the word 'Taiwanese' to mean 'RoC' cannot retroactively be applied to people who, frankly, have nothing to do with 'Taiwan' in the sense that the modern word is used...it's a plain absurdity, and I'm not sure why this is hard to understand. There was no Taiwan identity in the way there is now. He did not 'become' a Taiwanese...'Taiwanese' is an identity, not a citizenship or official label. The whole problem with this category tree is that it conflates different subjects into one...i.e. refugees that fled to Taiwan in 1949, and people who came to Taiwan afterward, and also modern Taiwanese identity with RoC citizenship. FiiO Electronics Technology

Could someone from this WikiProject assess this for notability per WP:NCORP? The only citation provided is to the company's own website, but that does nothing per WP:CORPDEPTH. The article's been around for a bit, but never seems to have gotten properly assessed because (1) it wasn't submitted to AfC and (2) nobody bothered to create a talk page for it and add WikiProject banners for it until I just did. There are a few stand-alone articles about some of the companies products; so, maybe the sources used in them can also be added to the main company article. Following quite nasty edit-war, I started discussion on the Great Power article talk page about map in the article. Main topics for discussion: What countries should be on the map? Should the map show some sort of hierarchy of great powers (eg. using colours)? Would not be better to remove the map altogether? Some rather aggressive POV pushing from parties both for and against the characterization of the initiative as neocolonialism; I came in as a neutral party and almost immediately managed to upset at least one of the two sides of the conflict. WP:AGF is fraying, and it could use some editors who are experienced with China and neutral on this issue to try and keep the peace. I don't particularly want to do it solo. "Kaidan"?

Could a Chinese-speaker confirm whether 怪談 is a common Chinese word and (ideally from a Cantonese rather than Mandarin perspective) whether it is pronounced anything like the Japanese kaidan? I'm a bit confused as to why The Unbelievable is in the disambig header at Kaidan rather than in the see also section, but I suspect I might be missing something since the former article doesn't include any Chinese pronunciation key (in any topolect), so rather than looking up the pronunciation and making a judgement based on my gut I figured getting a second opinion from someone who knows what they are talking about might be better. As per Wikipedia:Village_pump_(proposals)#Display_a_link_to_WikiProject/topic_specific_guidelines_when_editing_an_article? I suggested that WikiProjects could make pagenotices covering all articles relevant to their projects.

Weird Sino-Japanese disambig problem

雲南 is the name of both a city in Japan and a province in China. The former is very small, but the latter is in mainland China where the name is written as "云南". Inclusion of a disambig headnote for a redirect from a Chinese character name seems ... weird, and a disambiguation page with a Chinese character title is worse. If the one were named for the other we could mention it inline, but I'm pretty sure the Japanese city's name means "southern Izumo", similar to how "Sennan" means "southern Izumi", making it a coincidence. It's not weird at all, 雲南 is the traditional "spelling" for the Chinese province, and the spelling used in Taiwan for its "wayward" mainland possessions. (One China). As it is a large topic and traditionally spelled that way, the redirect should remain. A WP:CJKV disambiguation page would be fine, there's several of them already, and being a foreign language term, a dabpage would work well. A foreign language hatnote would also be fine, since those exist for other languages. A neither yes, nor no. As is wont for anything to do with the PRC, the "criticism of media handling" section seems to have grown beyond what is WP:DUE for an article which is not about China's censorship of media. Certainly some mention is appropriate, but it's got a bit bloated. I've trimmed back a couple of particularly extraneous paras. I'm speaking especially of RWB, which is effectively an advocacy group for privately-owned capitalist media and as such tends to make every event in a country that limits press freedom about the press freedom issue. When dealing with a tragedy like this, that's at the very least a little distasteful. That being said, reports of weibuo users being instructed to cite only official casualty figures and "avoid spreading rumours" are due, encyclopedic and actually interesting and should be retained. In looking at the dispute ([5] [6] [7]), I do not believe the issue is whether Tao Liu contributed to the music, but rather in what way. There are plenty of sources that attribute the music to Liu and Chen: this from Variety and this from the Hollywood Reporter. The basis of the dispute seems to be centered on this question: Should Liu be credited as equal music contributor, additional composer, or having provided additional music? Just to clarify - I also did a web search initially, and those sources did not yet come up for me (not created yet or not indexed/highly pageranked, my guess). That was the basis of my suggesting to omit the name entirely, as that might perhaps resolve the conflict. If the person is widely listed as second-named but otherwise equal-ranking to Roc Chen, then we should obviously reflect that. Hi Samsara and Mkdw, thanks for your help. Actually we are not focusing on the "additional composer" for now as major media such as mTime(the source the other user who keeps doing the vandalism quoted), Douban, and IMDB has Tao Liu listed as Additional Composer, if you still do not believe maybe you can just go see the film and you'll clearly see at the ending roller credit Tao Liu is listed as the additional composer. Variety and some other press, which I believe sourced from Wikipedia for the credits may have not included "additional composer" for Tao Liu because of Wikipedia back then didn't have the word "additional composer" because of the vandalism of the user "Lester1321". The user "Lester1321" is not even focusing on keep changing the "additional composer" word now because now we have valid sources, he is focusing on other ways to attack the main composer by adding slanders for the main composer's music is a plagiarism sourced from his own press platform (soundtrack magazine is his own self-press on Wechat). There're other users such as DannyS712 helping remove his slanders but he keeps adding back on intention to sabotage the main composer Roc's reputation. He and his self-press "soundtrack magazine" is known to sabotage Roc and other Chinese film composers' reputation since a few years ago. Hope you can temporarily protect this page. Continuing to further request the article be protected may be seen as disruptive and venue shopping. We have other methods of dispute resolution on the English Wikipedia to resolve these types of issues that require consensus building. I strongly suggest you adhere to this advice or you may be blocked from editing; a solution more likely to be used if the issue is confined to one or two individuals, rather than locking an entire article from editing by the wider community. The English Wikipedia has different policies and standards than the Chinese Wikipedia and essentially should be considered completely separate and independent from one another. There's an official poll here to decide on a name for the largest unnamed object in the solar system, OR10, and the hosts link to our article Gonggong. I can't find any PD images of Gonggong, though I did add a couple that look basically similar. Anyway, if anyone here can find (or create) an image, that would be nice for people coming here because of the poll. "This is a Chinese name."

Template:Chinese name is conventionally placed at the top of articles, but when the article title is not actually the person's real name (or even Chinese!) the wording doesn't make a whole lot of sense. At Junjun (singer), for example, the only way to read it as making logical sense is to that the "this" as referring to the following line of text where she is introduced by her actual name, which is clearly not how it was intended. Hi there, I am not very familiar with Chinese artists formatting. But is there anything wrong with putting Chinese titles beside the English titles of films and dramas on the artists page? Like what this user has been suggesting. He/she might be right since I don't see people doing it for Korean or Japanese artists. I would say that excluding Chinese titles is only acceptable if there is an official translation. If some Wikipedia user translates the Chinese to English, then removes the Chinese, the term becomes hard to search for, and hard to verify. 50.202.21.73 (talk) 14:35, 14 May 2019 (UTC)

Geng Zhou, one of his soldiers, is a fictional character, but Chang Ang, the Mongol military leader, is surely an historical character. If you don't know very well this documentary, you can see the full video (Part 1, Part 2). Their names can also be changed: Here Geng Zhou is renamed Zhou Li. Geng Zhou is a fictional character, but in this documentary he is the second main protagonist after Qi Jiguang, then he could have an own page. Book references for conventions in Shanghainese?

I wanted to see how to get the Shanghainese/Wu names of schools from a dictionary. A Chinese user showed me a website which gives the Wu pinyin and tones, but he added that a school in Shanghainese is stated as "學堂" rather than "学校/學校" which is used in Mandarin and Cantonese. However he wasn't aware of any books which explain the conventions of Shanghainese and the differences between Mandarin and Shanghainese.

Do any of you know of any publications which would explicitly state this in the text?

Education templates

@WhisperToMe: I support merging because it's currently very short and would make for an easy merge. Having a subcategory like "Education by location" would work. As for reorganization... There are a LOT of articles listed, and some of them seem to be less notable than others. If we wanted to slim it down, taking some less notable articles off could work. Also, some subcategories also only have one link, such as Vocational education or Defunct institutions. These could be merged into other subcategories. We could even create sub-subcategories. Impressions and suggestions from a new member

I recently joined WikiProject China, starting my contributions small by doing some article assessments. I just browsed through the links on the side panel, but most of them (except the ones that are bot-driven) seem to be seriously outdated. Is there anyone who's generally active in this WikiProject? I want to help revamp/revitalize the WikiProject somehow.

I'm trying to think of specific, tangible ways to boost the engagement and productivity of WikiProject China. A lot of the interfaces seem a little old-fashioned and could be updated, which would help draw in new members. I'm currently a member of the Guild of Copy Editors, which has a really good coordinator team and high levels of member engagement (quality matters more than quantity in many cases). Perhaps we should try to establish a similar coordinator team (if there are even enough active members to do so)? I'm sure there are other WikiProjects out there as well that are similarly active, so if anyone is a part of those and has specific ideas, do pitch in. Hi Bobbychan193: Other projects seem to be doing great with monthly contests (examples: Military history/Contest, Guild of Copy Editors/Backlog elimination drives). @MarioGom: Yeah we could definitely have a monthly contest for article creation, article cleanup/copy editing, translating, etc. But first, I think we need to update outdated project pages and appoint a coordinator team.
In many other WikiProjects (like GOCE or MILHIST), coordinators play the roles of facilitators (rather than leaders or rulers). Here is an example from the GOCE: coordinators are the designated points of contact for issues concerning the project, and are responsible for maintaining the Guild's internal structure and processes. They coordinate Guild activities, maintain our pages, and organize Drives and Blitzes. They have no authority over article content or editor conduct and have no special powers conferred by their Guild activities. As such, I'd like to see experienced and active members step up and nominate themselves, and everyone can vote. Bobbychan193 (talk) 20:05, 11 August 2019 (UTC)

I am a regular reviewer at AfC. Normally I would simply ask about referencing and use Google Translate to see the content. However, this one looks a little more complicated than most non-English referenced drafts I run into. @CNMall41: After reading the draft, I'd say the subject is notable enough, given multiple appearances on major shows, such as Singer 2019. Furthermore, the subject, aged 18, happens to be rather young, so assuming that they continue to develop their music/entertainment career, their notability will only continue to increase in the future.

Transliteration

After discussion on Talk:Wade–Giles#ʻ_or_`_???, I'm assuming that Wikipedia should represent the character in Wade-Giles transliteration of Chinese words as a straight apostrophe, following MOS:STRAIGHT. @Beland:, I object to changing the "correct" spiritus asper to a straight apostrophe. Many people incorrectly assume that it is an apostrophe or use ` instead of the correct ῾, but we shouldn't change correct usage to incorrect usage. MOS:STRAIGHT does not tell us which marks to use in transliteration systems. If you want to do a mass change, either change to ῾ or change all ` to ', but don't change ῾ to '. —Kusma (t·c) 15:04, 14 August 2019 (UTC)
@Kusma: OK, that makes sense. We have {{okina}} to prevent that Polynesian letter from being confused with apostrophe or getting converted to straight quotes. I'm trying to decide what might be a good equivalent for this character; {{spiritus asper}} seems a bit long; maybe {{asper}}? {{dasia}} is short and uses an alternate name for this character which is in some of the Unicode guides. -- Beland (talk) 20:14, 14 August 2019 (UTC)
As long as the template explains what it does, I am not too concerned about its name, but would go to {{asper}} probably. Here btw is a scholarly review mentioning the choice of character: [8]. Given that the apostrophe is nowadays widely used, perhaps we shouldn't go around replacing all apostrophes by spiritus asper signs, but protecting those that are there is an excellent idea. —Kusma (t·c) 20:21, 14 August 2019 (UTC)
Perfect, I'll use that. To start with I'm cleaning up numerical HTML entities, and at some point will probably check to see if any actual okina have been used inappropriately and fix those. If the spiritus asper is in fact preferred over apostrophes (straight or otherwise), documenting that in the Manual of Style should lead to usage of the preferred punctuation over time. I'm doing an encyclopedia-wide spell check, and I'm sure a lot of romanizations with apostrophes will show up on the list of potential typos, so it's good we will know how to handle those. -- Beland (talk) 20:43, 14 August 2019 (UTC)

Wang Guodong

Shouldn’t we have an article about painter Wang Guodong, who died last week at age 88? According to the NYT, one art historian has said his portrait of Mao Zedong was “the most important painting in China”. One of his students, Ge Xiaoguang, has an article. Go for it MelanieN! You are an experienced editor. The NY Times article is a perfectly good source, and other editors will be more willing to revise or expand your article than they are to start one of their own. Time to split Foreign relations of China

I started a discussion at Talk:Foreign relations of China#It’s time to split the article at 1991. I thank Rjensen for taking the initiative and setting a much needed example of a respected senior editor taking responsibility for curating existing articles. But making the split without discussion with more editors may cause problems.
Briefly, I agree that it is time to split but not that 1991 is the place. Stopping Foreign relations of Imperial China at 1800 omits more than a century of imperial China; History of foreign relations of China going 1800-1990 leaves out the first 40 years. Foreign relations of China (PRC) should start in 1949, when PRC starts. Please continue discussion at Foreign relations of China. ch (talk)
Foreign relations of China in my opinion should deal with current events -- not history seven decades back. a split at 1949 distorts history badly by splitting careers of Mao, Chou, Deng and many others. Music of Hebei

I have recently nominated this article for proposed deletion, on the grounds that it contains such a small amount of information, there is no equivalent of this page on other editions of Wikipedia, and many other articles by User:TUF-KAT have been deleted as well. Per WP:HEY, however, I believe there is a chance that we could save this article, if it is worth saving. A small chance, but a chance nonetheless. I am no expert on Chinese operas myself, so that's why I am asking here, to see if anyone knows enough about the article topic that they could make sufficient improvements to the article so that it can be prevented from being deleted. @Kanguole: Most of the targets for entries on the page don't mention "Guotai" so the page doesn't "help a reader find the right Wikipedia article when different topics could be referred to by the same search term". Rather it's an article about a particular Chinese "phrase" (is that the right word?), and I couldn't find a category similar to Category:Latin words and phrases. A couple of months ago I thought I would write this article (linked above) which is vital to both the military and economic history of the Qing but I don't think that I can "do it justice" at the moment, as I know that you're also very passionate about Chinese culture and Chinese history I could show you the two "main sources" I was planning on using, and you could pick it up if you'd ever be interested:

Reporting in China: please read past the headlines to note who did what

I read a Kaiser Kuo article about China and its perceptions in the West. He said:

  • " I see this especially in headline writing where “China Prosecutes So-and-So” turns out to be about one small city’s judiciary or mayor’s office prosecuting so-and-so; think how silly it would be if, say, a story about Harlan County, Kentucky banning the teaching of evolution were headlined “US Bans Teaching of Evolution.”"

I noticed this very phenomenon with reporting on Russia, where a "Russia does this" turns out to be a municipal government. Please read past the headlines of the sources quoted and be exact with who did what.

New bot to remove completed infobox requests
