Chicago Temple building

(moved from WP:CHICAGO) The Chicago Temple Building is a 173 meter (568 foot) tall skyscraper church located at 77 W. Washington St. in Chicago, Illinois, United States. Should there be a dash in between 173 and meter (173-meter)? I've seen something like this be written both ways and just was wondering if this was prefered or not. Popular pages tool update

As of January, the popular pages tool has moved from the Toolserver to Wikimedia Tool Labs. The code has changed significantly from the Toolserver version, but users should notice few differences. Please take a moment to look over your project's list for any anomalies, such as pages that you expect to see that are missing or pages that seem to have more views than expected. Note that unlike other tools, this tool aggregates all views from redirects, which means it will typically have higher numbers. (For January 2014 specifically, 35 hours of data is missing from the WMF data, which was approximated from other dates. For most articles, this should yield a more accurate number. However, a few articles, like ones featured on the Main Page, may be off).

Web tools, to replace the ones at tools:~alexz/pop, will become available over the next few weeks at toollabs:popularpages. All of the historical data (back to July 2009 for some projects) has been copied over. The tool to view historical data is currently partially available (assessment data and a few projects may not be available at the moment). The tool to add new projects to the bot's list is also available now (editing the configuration of current projects coming soon). Unlike the previous tool, all changes will be effective immediately. OAuth is used to authenticate users, allowing only regular users to make changes to prevent abuse. A visible history of configuration additions and changes is coming soon. Once tools become fully available, their toolserver versions will redirect to Labs.

Chicago Architecture Blog Article

The Chicago Architecture Blog published an excellent article entitled For Bridge Lovers, Chicago is the Greatest Show on Earth. I noticed that some of the historic bridges mentioned have achieved landmark status; however, I was unable to find articles for them on Wikipedia. I thought members of this group might be interested. Is David Hernandez (late unofficial Chicago Poet Laureate) notable?

Is David Hernandez (1947-2013) notable? He was called the unofficial Poet Laureate of Chicago and I can find lots of independent, reliable-source references that provide significant coverage about him, but almost all local or regional in nature. My personal standards are that "merely local" notability is generally not sufficient for a non-historical person or entity. I think there was some national coverage on National Public Radio's All Things Considered but I don't have a firm reference to back that up yet.

Does this person qualify for an article? If so, can you guys help me find non-local independent, reliable sources that provide enough significant coverage to make an article unlikely to be "tagged" for lack of notability? davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 19:21, 3 May 2014 (UTC)

Tonight, Tonight (The Smashing Pumpkins song)

Does "Tonight, Tonight" (The Smashing Pumpkins song) really belong in Category:Songs about Chicago, Illinois. The article does not support this. The lyrics only say "And the embers never fade in your city by the lake", which is a vague reference to the city and "The place where you were born", which for songwriter Billy Corgan is also vague.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 22:31, 3 May 2014 (UTC)

Leaflet For Wikiproject Chicago At Wikimania 2014

Hi all,

My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.

One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.

As Tony suggested, I'm repeating the following comments here:

I don't know what parameters were involved in setting up this bot operation, but it seems to tag articles that have only tenuous relations to Chicago. The case that came to my attention was that Yobot recently added an inappropriate Project Chicago banner to the article Berard Haile. Haile had only a marginal connection with Chicago (he studied anthropology briefly at the University of Chicago), was born in Ohio, got his MA in DC, and lived most of his life in Arizona and New Mexico. This is the second time a bot has inserted such an inappropriate Chicago link to this article. A little more caution in formatting bot requests seems called for. It's easy to make automated changes; cleaning up after them wastes editors' time. --SteveMcCluskey (talk) 01:15, 8 July 2014 (UTC)

I suspect, the list of high-quality articles above is indicitive of the types of things that were added. We have already manually removed one of the 3 FAs and 1 of the 14 GAs as not relevant to the project. Many of the articles are sort of marginally connected to the city. However, they probably are all of interest to some Chicagoans at some level for these marginal connections. Doing things by bot is the only efficient way to find articles that we are overlooking. I don't really have a problem with the results. If editors of Berard Haile want to have the Category:University of Chicago staff in his article, we will continue to watch his article in the various automated ways that we can with a tag on his talk page. Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. Help with notability flag

Hi… I’m Mig Pascual and I work with Cleversafe, a computer storage company in Chicago. Would love someone’s help here. The Wikipedia article about the company has a warning at the very top that says that the company does not meet notability requirements.

I have to believe that a company covered in the major IT trades and the likes of Crain’s and The Wall Street Journal counts as notable.

We posted to the article’s talk page about this some time ago, but haven’t heard back, so I decided to reach out here.

Humboldt Park, Chicago article

The above named article is a disaster area. It has denigrated into a consent battle between factions, political in nature, that largely seem split between people who oppose the "gentrification" of the neighborhood and another faction that wants to erase the hood's "colorful" (criminal) past. There is very little referencing to any changes and even solid facts like the neighborhood's boundaries are being disputed (without references). I have neither the time or the access to the resources to fix it. If I did, I would stub it and start over. You have this classed as a mid importance page. Could someone here please rescue it? Chicago politics article configuration

We have in project scope Chicago of course, and History of Chicago, and finally Political history of Chicago. We also have in our project scope Chicago-style politics, which was until recently about the meme floated in the first Obama campaign and first term by John Boehner and others. Recently two editors and some IPs are collaborating to change the subject of Chicago-style politics to a negative point-of-view fork of Political history of Chicago, reflecting their focus on, as their lede says, "the less commendable aspects of the recent political history of the American city of Chicago, Illinois, (i.e., corruption, patronage, nepotism, authoritarianism) which is often cited as an example of blatant corruption." I have tried to steer them and their new content and references and points-of-view toward contributing to Political history of Chicago in a collaborative, neutral, balanced article, to no avail. This is not exactly 100% true. The topic of the article in question was the phrase "Chicago Style Politics" when the article was first published in 2011. It remained as such through April of 2014 when HughD changed it to focus on the Obama meme. Thus he is correct in claiming that several editors are trying to change the subject of the article but he failed to mention that he was the one who changed it last year and the other editors (ie the consensus view) is that it should be moved back to it's original form. At Political history of Chicago, contributions related to "the less commendable aspects of the recent political history of the American city of Chicago" would be subject to community consensus regarding neutrality and balance. The only advantage of hijacking a relatively obscure article about a political meme is the lack of scrutiny. This is a blatant POV fork. And our project and the Obama project lose the article on the meme in collateral. I joined WP:CHICAGO November 2008 and have brought several GAs to our project. Springee came to Chicago-style politics for the first time 27 August 2015‎ after writing me up multiple times in prior weeks. This vandalism at Chicago-style politics is blatant edit war baiting, the latest scrimmage in retaliation for my contributions to WP:CONSERVATISM. Springee's project is not WP:CHICAGO or building an encyclopedia, it is me. Sorry he has taken his project to WP:CHICAGO. Please help at Chicago-style politics. Again, your version of events isn't quite true. The article was published in 2011. At that time the opening paragraph, it as of yet didn't have a lead, was, "Chicago-style politics is a byword used to designate a set of characteristics associated to the less commendable aspects of the recent political history of the American city of Chicago, Illinois, i.e. corruption, nepotism, authoritarianism, which is often cited as an example of corruption."[[2]]. Clearly the article was about the phrase (is a byword used to designate). That statement of the article topic was largely unchanged through March of last year, "Chicago-style politics is a byword used to designate a set of characteristics associated to the less commendable aspects of the recent political history of the American city of Chicago, Illinois, (i.e., bribery, patronage, nepotism, authoritarianism) which is often cited as an example of blatant corruption." [[3]] In April of last year you took to heavily rewriting the article to make it about the meme that was used to attack Obama specifically rather than the origin/history of the term. On April 27th, 2014 you changed the opening sentence to the meme attacking Obama.[[4]] Immediately after that you removed a large section of the article that said the term was used in particular to describe the Richard Daley admin as "off topic", a topic you had just changed without consensus.[[5]] Note that not once during this time did you post any justifications for this change to the Talk page. One editor did object but you didn't actually post on the talk page until a few days ago.[[6]] There was never consensus to change the subject of the article, there simply wasn't enough interest to correct your changes. Please do not misrepresent your involvement in this article. Peter Domaradzki aka User:Belissarius

Ladies and gentlemen, yesterday morning our good friend and a fellow Wikipedian, User:Belissarius, has died. Some of you might have heard the story of his dog trying to save his life[8], some of you might have stumbled upon his edits in military- or Poland-related articles here at English Wikipedia. Apart from being a member of Solidarity movement, a journalist and a long-time editor-in-chief of Chicago-based Dziennik Związkowy (Polish Daily News), he was also one of the pillars of Polish Wikipedia.

He had well over 100 thousand edits under his belt and boy were they good. He authored more than 20 featured articles (the last one - on French and Indian wars - was promoted 4 days after the accident), someone even coined a term belissariusy ("belissaria") denoting articles so good that their featured article nominations are but a formality. Also, for a time he ran our DYK project. All in all, yesterday we lost one of the best Wikipedians we had.

Having said that, I have a request. We would love to be present at the wake, but we can't afford to send a delegation across the Pond. Sending flowers however is a completely different matter. Could anyone of you Chicago-based Wikimedians help us by picking up the flowers and showing up at the wake to represent us? It's this Sunday, 2015-11-08, between 3:30 PM and 9 PM at Lawrence Funeral Home, 4800 N. Merging/renaming London House (Chicago) and London Guarantee Building

London House (Chicago) (page created 2006) and London Guarantee Building (page created 2007) seem to be merging toward very similar content. London House was a Jazz club located in a small portion of the London Guarantee Building. Now, LondonHouse is a 452-room hotel that comprises the majority of the London Guarantee Building. General Electric building near Clark Street Bridge

This photograph of the Clark Street Bridge is said to have been taken from the "General Electric Building" in 1950. I suspect that both the camera location and the warehouse in the background have both been demolished. West Chicago City Museum

Looking for a bit of insight. I've got a source, which on P. 385 mentions "Turner Hall" on West 12th Street in 1877. Long story short, some dying happened there.

The problem is that I found West Chicago City Museum, formerly Turner Town Hall, which definitely existed in 1877, but the NRHP registration doesn't say anything about a confrontation there in the riots of 1877. I don't know crap about Chicago, but I'm not seeing anything currently named W 12th anywhere in the vicinity of where the current museum is, but I don't currently have any way to tell whether the street was renamed some time in the past 140 years.

The only source cited has been overwritten, but if this is the same Jim Stack then there probably coverage in Chicago papers like the Tribune and Sun Times from when he was in college and his association with the Bulls. CPS attendance boundary maps

For Chicago community areas and smaller municipalities around Chicago it's a good idea to cite school attendance boundary maps to determine which parts of the city/community are zoned to which schools. Using municipal zoning maps is a good idea so one can indicate if School District ABC serves an area with no residents (that is still useful to indicate as businesses generate tax money) or whether High School ABC has part of its attendance zone in an area with no residents.

Anyway the issue with CPS is that I've been using boundary maps from 2012-2013 when it's 2017. AFAIK CPS has *not* uploaded new boundary maps in an archivable (on the Wayback Machine, Webcitation, and/or Archive.is) format. There is a web-based mapping program but it's difficult to cite it!

If anyone knows if/when CPS has new PDF format maps please let me know and/or update the school boundary info I've been posting in Chicago articles. WhisperToMe (talk) 03:19, 11 January 2017 (UTC)

Interesting stats plots of WP Chicago

Hello all,

I am a PhD student from the University of Minnesota, and am doing some research project on the effects of member turnover in WikiProjects. I am doing some project-level analysis on the project performance, and find something interesting.

Some explanations about the variables:

group_article_productivity: this is the total number of edits on the articles claimed within the scope of the project.

project_art_comm: this is the total number of edits on the talk pages of articles claimed within the scope of the project.

project_coors: this is the total number of edits on the project page and project talk page.

project_user_comm: this is the total number of edits on the project members made on the user talk pages of each other.

The variables are aggregated by one month. We can see there is an obvious burst on project article productivity and project article communication around time interval 60th, which is around August, 2006. I don't know what happened at that time that caused that burst. I wonder if someone has been working on the project for a long time, and could recall that. Also, if you have any thought about this plot, please feel free to share to me :)

Anybody at Northeastern Illinois University? Looking for research/information about a 1970s mental health program at a Chicago-area school

Are there any Wikipedians at or near Northeastern Illinois University? There is an article up for potential deletion (the Spanish version of Hillside School District 93) and I want to find additional articles that could support the school's notability. I learned from this article:

"School Tries New Mental Health Program". Chicago Tribune. 1971-12-16. p. W9. (I have a copy of this article if you wish to read it)

...that the Hillside school tried an experimental mental health program in conjunction with Northeastern Illinois University. Does anyone know how/where to find research related to this program? Were there any PhD theses or journal articles produced as a result of this partnership? Are there any published documents at Northeastern Illinois U. about this program?

Based on a quick Google search, this plaque does not represent a specific bridge, but rather, it is about a company founded by Joseph Strauss, who designed (and held the patent to) a bascule bridge common in Chicago. The entry for the Strauss Bascule Bridge Company redirects back to Strauss. As there is virtually no information about the company in the Strauss article, I wouldn't recommend creating a standalone article for the company at this time. -- Mindfrieze (talk) 13:34, 17 April 2017 (UTC)

I don't mean to be lazy here, but I took this picture 2 years ago on a trip to Chicago and I don't recall the exact location, nor am I familiar with Chicago geography. This may not be particularly helpful, but the plaque appears to be located between the Monroe Street Bridge and Willis Tower. Victorgrigas, What is out there other than from the Trib. This is an international encyclopedia. I would argue against notability unless its coverage depth extends beyond the Trib to publications in other regions or national ones. Someone pinged my User talk about input on User:Theoa/George Armour. The article is going to need to be tweaked before it can be moved to mainspace. This is a tremendous resource about a great Chicagoan. The author is the great-great-great-grandson of the subject and the article was created with the love, care and admiration of a person related by blood. He is concerned that it is a problematic WP:COI. I am very proud to see User:Theoa's work. We should all spend some time helping to shape this article. I have not been so active in Chicago History articles of late and am pretty involved with college basketball articles at this time of year. There are a couple of options. The subject is a keeper. I am trying to think of a couple of ways to get attention on this article and get it into main space. As it is, the only way to bring it into main space would be to tag it with wikification and COI tags. It is sort of unbecoming to have a page with those kinds of tags. We could just move it into mainspace with tags. I don't have a ton of free time to put into it right now. It'll be a few weeks before I get to it. Benito Juárez sculpture

I am seeking assistance expanding the Benito Juárez (Martinez) article. Originally, this article was just about the bust in Houston, but has since been expanded to mention the statue in Chicago, which apparently replaces a bust previously installed in Chicago. Are there any WikiProject Chicago participants willing to help find information about the bust, as well as the current statue? Help identifying images of Chicago sites

I posted about this above, but figured a new section might be appropriate. I visited Chicago back in 2015 and uploaded images of my trip here: commons:User:Another Believer/Chicago. I've worked hard to identify, categorize, and label the images, but there remain some unidentified subjects (those in the gallery without captions). If you're familiar with Chicago and have any interest in helping to identify subjects, feel free to add a caption or simply categorize the image -- I'll see the changes in my watchlist and take care of the rest. I don't mean to be lazy, I've just hit a wall with identifying sites.

Sculptures in Chicago

I created Wikipedia:WikiProject Chicago/Sculpture, which currently displays a list of outdoor sculptures in Grant Park, and those surveyed by the Smithsonian Institution's "Save Outdoor Sculpture!" program. Not all works are notable and worthy of standalone Wikipedia articles, but I'd like this to serve as a checklist to help identify potential articles, and I invite project members to view and improve the page. Question re: Balbo Monument and Gold Star Families Memorial and Park

I have a question for people more familiar with Chicago than me. Museum Campus, at least according to the Wikipedia article, is part of Grant Park. Museum Campus is defined as the area encompassing "the Adler Planetarium, America's first planetarium; the Shedd Aquarium; the Field Museum of Natural History; Soldier Field, home of the NFL Chicago Bears football team; and the Lakeside Center of McCormick Place."

Adjacent to McCormick Place are the Balbo Monument and Gold Star Families Memorial and Park. Does this mean these sites are also within Grant Park, and if so, should we added Template:Grant Park and/or Category:Museum Campus? The Balbo Monument article mentions Burnham Park, but I'm not exactly sure where Grant Park / Museum Campus ends and Burnham Park begins. Is anyone able to help? Another Believer, By my recollection the Gold Star Families Memorial and Park extends south of Soldier Field. I feel that it probably extends too far South to be part of the Museum Campus. The gentrification happening is in a select number of neighborhoods mainly on the North and Near West sides. The majority of the city is not gentrifying. Ryecatcher773 (talk) 03:17, 16 October 2017 (UTC)

Chicago Futabakai Japanese School pushpin map: how to show Chicago outer suburbs?

I added a pushpin map for Chicago Futabakai Japanese School in Arlington Heights, *but* the pushpin map for Chicago only displays the innermost areas of Chicago, so Futabakai doesn't appear on the map.
