162 Cape Verde-related articles needing geographical coordinates

Based on a search of Wikipedia's articles related to Cape Verde, I've found some articles that I believe are about places in Cape Verde, and could usefully have geographical coordinates added.

The articles in question are listed in Category:Cape Verde articles missing geocoordinate data. At the time of writing, some examples included:

1. Garça de Cima
2. Jalunga
3. Lomba dos Pombas
4. Mato Inglês
5. Ribeira da Prata
6. Ribeira das Bras
7. Seixal, Cape Verde

...and there are many more, as well. At the time of posting this notice, there were 162 articles in this category needing geographical coordinates.

Why add coordinates?

By adding coordinates, a Wikipedia reader can easily view the location on a street map, nautical chart, topographic map, by satellite photo, realtime weather map, and in many other ways. Coordinate data makes an article eventually appear in various services such as Google Maps' Wikipedia overlay, Google Earth, and Wikipedia's own internal map service. Coordinate data also helps readers looking for geographically-based data, such as locations near a reference point, or related information.

How can I do it?

The articles are all marked with {{coord missing}} tags, which need to be replaced with {{coord}} tags that contain the location's latitude/longitude coordinates; or you might be able to add coordinates to an existing infobox. You can find out how to do this at the Wikipedia:Geocoding how-to for WikiProject members. Proposal

After some days of holidays, I’m back, filled with energy to dive in back in this project. Therefore, I’d like to submit some proposals to everyone interested in this project.

Joint effort

There at least three WikiProjects about Cape Verde going on: in English, in German and in Portuguese. The articles written Portuguese Wikipedia are in general more complete (what would be natural), but the English Wikipedia is more diversified (more articles). I couldn’t evaluate in the German Wikipedia since I can’t speak German.

The development has not been uniform though. It is far from being chaotic, but even so it could be more coordinated.

What I’d like to propose it is to all WikiProjects in all languages to join their efforts and exchange information. Since everybody can talk (even if just a little bit) English, the WikiProject talk page in English could be used as a multilingual platform. A joint effort could be very useful for the following reasons:

1. to exchange information: nobody knows everything, and if we could swap information, the contents of the articles would probably improve;
2. exchange ideas: some guys have good ideas, but in using just one language they can’t spread those ideas;
3. parallel development: my dream would be that all WikiProjects to have a parallel development: same structure, same strategy, same criteria, same articles, same categories, and so on; however, I’m not sure if it will be possible, besides each Wikipedia en each language having its own criterion, we can always stumble on editors with a “I don’t give a damn about the other languages” attitude;
4. credibility: when there is disparity in the articles in several languages they loose some credibility; with a coordinated text in several languages the contents of the articles gain credibility, and also neutrality since they can “drink” in several sources in different languages;
5. more sources: since we are talking about sources, a joint effort between the projects in several languages would be useful for exchanging source information; not everybody can read (or has access to) sources in other languages, but if the editors are willing to, they can share the information they have access to, translating it;
6. translation: and since we are talking about translating, using the English language as a multilingual platform can be useful for translating articles, from and to some other language; of course, if the editors are willing to do the job!

Placenames

The situation about placenames is a bit chaotic. An editor (eager to do a good job, for certain) has pumped both English Wikipedia and Portuguese Wikipedia with a lot of articles regarding places. However I’m a bit skeptical about several aspects:

• I am not sure if all those places really exist;
• I am not sure if all those places have some encyclopedic importance;
• I am not sure about the real name and the spelling about all of these places;
• not sure also about the exact location of all of them;
• and at last, I am not sure if all those articles are about true settlements or just geographical features (streams, plains, zones, mountains, etc.);

So, some work must be done. For the existence of those places there is some sources we can check. For example, I have recently purchased these maps. Pros: they are O.K. maps, very complete, with a lot of information regarding settlements, streams, elevations and other geographical features, and are up to date. Cons: they have some spelling errors, some places have mistaken names (sometimes Creole names instead of the Portuguese ones) and they have a 1/50,000 scale. But we can use it as a starting point for checking the existence of the places and their real name.

In the Portuguese Project, I suggested that the development of the geographical articles should be in a progressive way. First we try to develop the articles of more encyclopedic importance, then the articles of medium importance, and at last the articles of lesser importance. I suggested that first we should develop the articles about the cities (cidades), then about the towns (vilas) and only then about the villages (aldeias). The same goes for the geographical and administrative divisions: first we should develop the articles about the islands, then about the municipalities (concelhos) and only then about the parishes (freguesias). This progressive strategy could be applied on all subjects, not just the geographical ones. That would avoid some article to be much more developed than another one of the same level, or an article about a sub-level to be more developed that one about a top-level.

For that, the maps I mentioned before can help. They have different graphic representations for the different urban settlements. The big (big for Cape Verde, of course) cities are represented by large purple spots. The towns are represented by small purple spots. The other settlements (villages) are represented by small square dots, sometimes scattered to show a scattered occupation. I am not sure if that corresponds to the official level classification, but we could use it as a starting point for choosing what should be in Wikipedia and what should not.

According to those maps, for cities (large spotted areas) we have:

And for towns (small spotted areas) we have:

I also asked someone to purchase for me some old maps from the Instituto Geográfico do Exército in Lisbon. Pros: these are really good maps, at 1/25,000 scale, exact coordinates, with a lot of information from trustable sources and used in professional applications both in Cape Verde and Portugal. Cons: they are not up to date (the survey was made in the ’60s — except for the Sal Island that dates from 2004), and at 7,00 € each sheet (they are 47 sheets in all) they are not cheap. But we can use it as a starting point for checking the correct spelling and the correct name of each place (for instance, I am not that sure anymore if it is “Pico de Fogo” or “Pico do Fogo”; I am not sure if it is “Tope” or “Topo”), and they can be used to disambiguate what are true settlements or just landforms (streams, plains, zones, mountains, etc.). They could be used for checking coordinates, also. At the moment I only have the sheets covering Santiago and São Vicente. I intend to buy them all but, hey, slowly, I am not rich…

Thanks for the push. I finally went and updated the table which was compiled earlier and now it can be sorted by type with a single click, and it will also allow easier editing of the table for updating it. It can probably be used as a cross-reference with the table above. Since it uses the statistical division and official geographical codes for each settlement, we know the places in it are officially recognized. --Waldir ^talk 23:18, 26 December 2008 (UTC)

Pictures

There are very few pictures about C. Verde in the WikiCommons. It would be nice if anyone could contribute with more pictures, specially:

• There are pictures of all the islands, but very biased towards Santiago and São Vicente. I would like to see more pictures about the other islands. For instance, Maio has only 2 pictures …
• It is needed more pictures about the most important urban centers: Praia, Mindelo, Assomada, Porto Novo and São Filipe.
• Each of the municipality seats (sedes de concelho) should have at least one picture.
• Pictures of what might look odd or strange, specially for foreigners, regarding the culture, geographical features, fauna and flora, etc.
• Pictures of things that are unique to Cape Verde regarding the culture, geographical features, fauna and flora, etc.
• Charts, concerning demography, climate, history, economy, etc.
• Pictures of notable people. For instance, it’s missing one of the presidents.

I updated the {{WikiProject Cape Verde}} template today, it now accepts the "needs-photo" parameter. I am currently awaiting approval for a bot, and if successful I'll see what I can do regarding the automatic tagging of articles without images, which will be categorized at Category:Cape Verde articles needing images for easy listing. --Waldir ^talk 15:12, 8 March 2009 (UTC)

I'm not saying I can get him to agree but, I have a friend who's a photographer who came back from the CVI's (it was his trip that introduced me to the Islands) who has all his photo's of the Islands on his site - and they're good. Infobox uniformization

I think we are ready to go for the uniformization of the infoboxes. Several articles within a same category or level show different infoboxes. This job has already been done in the Portuguese Wikipedia. It will be needed a uniformization of the infoboxes for islands, municipalities, mountains, urban settlements, etc. By the way, why was the infobox for Santiago changed alone? The previous locator map was better. In my opinion, the present one (besides being out to date, it shows the old municipality division) is more suited to show points (cities or towns) and not large surfaces (islands).

Regarding my message above, I also added the "needs-infobox" parameter to {{WikiProject Cape Verde}}. I'll try to add these parameters with the bot, and it will also be useful for the infobox standardization. --Waldir ^talk 15:12, 8 March 2009 (UTC)

Template

Sometimes, some editors eager to do a great job go on making some isolated changes that are not consistent to a uniform project. Maybe a little template could be made, to be included at the beginning of all articles to warn the editors that that article is part of the WikiProject, and maybe he or she could check what was decided in the project before going on changes. If not a template, maybe hidden text in the top of the article to warn the editor to check the WikiProject first.

I'm not sure, I think Wikipedia's policy is to not mix up internal issues with the article space. But since many people (especially the less familiarized with the wiki) use the talk pages to suggest changes, I believe this function can probably be delegated to the {{WikiProject Cape Verde}} template. --Waldir ^talk 15:12, 8 March 2009 (UTC)

Library

In the Portuguese Wikipedia there is a page called “Library”. I’ve asked an editor what it was for, if it was for each editor to list the sources he/she has used, or if it was to list existing sources that could eventually be consulted. I didn’t get any answer yet but a Library section could be useful. If any editor sees a source in another language, or a source he/she didn’t check out, he/she can always ask about what he/she needs to the editor that inserted the referred source.

I hope the editor you're referring to wasn't me! :) That page, AFAIK, is to list possible sources for other editors who might ask for confirmation of a given piece of information. For example, if I have a given book in my possession, other editors who don't have access to it might see that in the project's Library and ask me something related to that, say, to help in a new article they're creating, or in the cleanup of an existing one. Coordinators

It would also be interesting if each section or each theme had a coordinator. No, a coordinator would not be a “boss” who decides what goes on. But rather an editor willing to take in charge the task of coordinating each section, what strategy should be applied to the development of that section, moderating discussions, and so on.

I think we're too few. We've tried that in ptwiki and it didn't help much. But as far as I can see, every member is voluntarily choosing areas of interest to work on (e.g. Wiki User 68 did a good job with the Portal, TenIslands is working hard on the geographic places' nomenclature and infobox standardization, and I'm right now working on the assessment part. What we can do, I think, is define weekly or monthly tasks, a "collaboration of the week/month", if you please, with well defined and realistic goals, and work on that cooperatively. B.Leza and Djurumani

I have started a few stubs on popular Cape Verdean singers like Teofilo Chantre, Maria Alice and Djurumani. The last one is probably orphaned thanks to lack of any supporting links. Nice work! I don’t know anything about Djurumani, never heard of him, therefore I can’t help you. But, about B.Leza, you’re right, it’s amazing how there is no article about him. Cape Verde Portal

I've started work (with help) on updating the Portal. Although basically a template format (thank goodness), I made a study of quite a number of other portals and their resources and included the related portals structurally on the following basis: Related Continents, Nations and States for geographic, cultural and related-economic reasons. My approach is structured and purely logical, but was limited to Portal availability (I may help/create their Portals to complete this Portal).

I would prefer to have the concensus of this Project on tasks before I do them, as some can be quite time-consuming for a beginner, as I'm sure you know. How does the Project feel re the Portal so far? --Wiki User 68 talk 02:11, 19 February 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the support Waldir, I genuinely appreciate it. If you think it looked good then, you should see it now! Just added the perfect finishing touches to it in your nations colours. It looks better than the United States!! I've also managed to fit in doing the Angolan Portal and started my very first Portal from scratch - The São Tomé and Príncipe Portal which shall be linked to the P:CV - Basically I'm sweeping up all of Africa's "in-need-of" and uncreated Portals. I have one last trick for the CV Portal (it's a big one) but requires some work and is related to CV's geography. The Cape Verdean Wikipedia

A little while ago I joked to Waldir about - "Why isn't there a Cape Verdean Wikipedia when there's one for Volapük with only 50 fluent speakers in the World, but for Cape Verdean with roughly 1.5 millions speakers there's nothing?" and added the words "Ooo, I feel a project coming on!". Now I'm not really sure if that constitutes it as a Wikipedia:WikiProject Cape Verde task or not? Technically it isn't but logically it is, if you know what I mean. So without further adue I'll get stuck into the meat of the problem.

The problem: Cape Verde has 9 different dialects/variants and (basically) for political reasons really, no one is prepared to offer a solution that will upset any one variant speaker. One would think a compremise would work; but the reality is that the variants are in fact evolved compremises to start with! So is there a solution? There's always a solution to every problem I feel, so I decided to take a look at what that might be, and here are my results:

The solution: History offers the best advice on the solution to language evolution. I've had an interest in languages for sometime (structure/evolution etc) but was surprised to discover something rather interesting about the CV situation. Isolation has been the key factor in generating the problem in two respects. First, global isolation, and second, inter-island isolation. It's the inter-island isolation that's had the biggest effect, as stated on the CV Creole page...

The spreading of Cape Verdean Creole within the islands was done in three phases:

• In a first phase, the island of Santiago was occupied (2^nd half of the 15th century), followed by Fogo (end of the 16th century).
• In a second phase, the island of São Nicolau was occupied (mostly in the 2^nd half of the 17th century), followed by Santo Antão (mostly in the 2^nd half of the 17th century).
• In a third phase, the remaining islands were occupied by settlers from the first islands: Brava was occupied by population from Fogo (mostly in the beginning of the 18th century), Boa Vista by population from São Nicolau and Santiago (mostly in the 1^st half of the 18th century), Maio by population from Santiago and Boa Vista (mostly in the 2^nd half of the 18th century), São Vicente by population from Santo Antão and São Nicolau (mostly in the 19th century), Sal by population from São Nicolau and Boa Vista (mostly in the 19th century).

The islands lack of proximity appears to be the main cause in the success of the individual variant creoles. But these variants also exist in single landmass nations too. Which surprised me. The UK was a classic example. The reality is although people may be connected physically from one end of an island nation to the other (for example the UK), they simply don't interact in that way. General regional life and commerce before the "Modern Age" generally was limited to either the village one lived in or the next village. Cities enabled larger populations and therefore a larger base for a single common linguistic variant. As an aside, did you know that English is effectively a Creole, having been massively influenced by a number of foreign languages continuely throughout Englands history. I believe it's distance and travel that generates language.

So how did the UK resolve their language problem; which basically had exactly the same problem of different regional variants at about the same time the Cape Verdean ones were being created. Some English dialects were substancially different and almost unintelligible to other variants. Even today, Cornish (technically a seperate language) is 100% unintelligible to English-only speaking people.

As England's prosperity increased, the need for a standard variant of English became essential. The single-largest spoken English variant was in the nations capital, where trade was largest, the seat of government lay (and the laws written in) and the ruling monarchy resided. It was selected as the most logical choice and even today it is nationally known as "the Queens English". It was effectively spread and standardised throughout the nation by a private profiteering endeavour of a group of investors who approached a "man of words" to write the first English dictionary. Up until that time (as is the case in Cape Verde) rules were scant and spelling had no point of reference.

As you can imagine, the book (taking 9 years) was an enormous success and, probably, single-handedly took the English language into the (as then) modern age. Having looked at the history and linguistic structure of the different CV variants one thing stands out clearly; The original variant (Santiago) retains most of the originating word and sentence structure, that is, the Barlavento creoles are almost slangs of the original variant missing out letters and truncating words. Now it's true that's how modern languages evolve. A simple example in english of that in action is They are - They're or They will - They'll Now although everyone understands this we're certainly not going to abandon they are for they're linguistically.

So therein lies the answer I think. Not only is the Santiago variant the largest spoken variant, it's the capital's, the seat of government's, and it's the original with the most intact structure and the other variants are quite simply variants of Santiago Creole.

So where is the relevance with all of this and Wikipedia. Remember the "man of words" refered to earlier? His work in creating single-handedly a simple point of reference where no other existed (basically) forged the result from private hands. Whatever decisions are made with reference to the creation of The Cape Verdean Wikipedia, those decisions are capable of forging the same result as the first significant English dictionary published by Samuel Johnson, his Dictionary of the English Language in 1755. Cape Vedean Language

I would like to nominate a page specifically dedicated to the issue of the Cape Verdean Language Resolution. Due to various members (myself included) having difficulty in allocating specific time to this important issue, I would like to suggest creating a Task-Force or sub Wikipedia:Project to this issue. I personally think a Task-Force is insufficient and inappropriate to this nationally important issue. I would like to recommend a sub-project to Cape Verde re the language question. Obviously I can set it up, but I'd like project members views first.

It seems now the best approach, considering we may (probably) have more members that will want to comment on this issue. It also gives me (personally) the ability to release my research on this subject for native peer review, which I now realise, is extremely important.

I find myself restricted by work AND restricted by access to active members on this project. Make no mistake, this project is of National Importance to the Economic Security of the Cape Verdean Islands. The irony is, it's not in the actual Nations hands, but in the hands of Wikipedians!

A Wikipedian First from the Cape Verde Islands!

Hi Guys, first, sorry I've been absent from the CV-article scene, I'm supposed to be writing a book currently (re eating cheaply during the recession) and I'd fallen behind and I'm struggling to catch up as well! Secondly...Due to my dissatisfaction with Portal structures, I'm considering redesigning the template completely (that is, the standard template we're supposed to use). Basically it's primative and doesn't do the job we require when looking for info re a subject (which is key!)

But...market research is extremely useful and none better than asking experienced Wikipedians what they want/look for from an information source. You might be thinking, why not direct this to Wikipedia:Portals? The answer is simple and yet disturbing...I am the only person doing new development work on Portals. So, you lucky people, I need feedback, so don't be shy - spill the beans!

I do have a structured approach - obviously, but basically I'm not going to be foolish enough to ignore the USER! I'll develop it in my Userspace with links for you to access it, and of course, I'd like the Cape Verde Portal to be the first recipient of the new design! (that's the history bit) But this is a genuine endeavour, and I'm aiming for nothing less than complete Wikipedia Uptake! Hell! You may even see it on the Main Page!! Hi Guys - First, I've completed, yes completed the New Portal Design...Structurally that is, and second, I've designed a new banner for the Cape Verde Islands that assists in recruiting new members from IP based article creations. It's new and already being used here.

If you read my edit notes it'll make sense. If you think "No-Way". then fine, do as you think best. But this Guy contribs via more than one IP but from the same local (He's based in MA:USA) So may not even know how WP works! Even how to read the posts on the discussion page...Hence the banner! I've put the code on the page in question and have not created a Template. But, if the project likes the banner, AND likes the idea of more suitable banners in the future, I'll create a structured Template format, AND the project can simply request banners to suit applications which I can create easily.

Regarding the banner -- well, that's not recommended by wikipedia's guidelines, but I guess you can keep that up in that page if it means we'll get another contibutor :) If he ignores it though, you should probably take it off -- self-references are usually avoided in wikipedia. --Waldir ^talk 18:51, 23 April 2009 (UTC)

Yes, I agree. When I put the banner in I stated on the Edit Summary my reasons and time-frame for clarity, in detail. Of course, I'm merely "fishing" for his participation in the Project (laughter). But, Waldir, your remarks have given me a rather good idea that's not self-referencing, and I shall implement it forthwith! Thank you. I'd like to leave the banner for a while longer, just in case we can grab him, but if there are any problems/disagreements with that from members/others then it'll just have to come off. One quick question: Are we allowed a banner or other "thing" that encourages readers to join the Project in anyway? Are we even allowed simply a logo (similar to the portal one) that enables linking them to the project page?

As regards to the New Portal Design...I know you think what we have is good (and that's nice) but I'm actually talking about Portals "Globally" within Wikipedia. In other words, a new approach to Wikipedia Portals, and you gave the reason why! You rarely visit them - but I bet I could change all that...

Even within the last 24 hours I've managed to learn a lot more of what their function could do. I'm gonna work on this on my own, then let the Cape Verde Wikiproject view an example for feedback purposes. It's not just about the P:CV in general, although I always new I could provide SO much more for the Islands. Information added by unknown wikipedians (IP only) to CV pages

Hi Guys. I don't know why, but we always seem to have IP edits to CV military pages! We've had another recently, adding quite detailed and therefore possibly sensitive information re vessels of the Navy by someone in the North of England that may work for regional government there (UK). I think I might simply try the CV authorites to verify in someway or another - I dunno. All this un-verified stuff is just no good really. The IP address has a history of editing on wiki for a fair while. I think I might just send an email to the CV authorities asking them to comment on the info on the relevant page on here. Statistics vandal?

There have been a bunch of edits from 24.218.173.60 (contribs, talk) in Cape Verde-related pages that are questionable, false, or clearly vandalism. This individual has changed a lot of population statistics, which is a little frightening, not just because the changes are unreferenced and generally go unquestioned, but often the statistics that were there before were either unsourced, or had a dead link for a source. I looked a little into the INE website (at the moment down) which had some statistics, but I couldn't find any of the kind "X people/tal location". Maybe just running around reverting all of this IP's statistics edits might make the statistics more likely to be true, but that seems against my understanding of Wikipedia policy. Ideas?

Moral of the story, keep an eye out for this IP on pages you regularly edit. There are people just as happy to insert false information into Cape Verde-related pages as the rest of Wikipedia, but I think our obscurity makes us vulnerable to vandalism going uncorrected. Infobox template

Hi, I made an infobox template for settlements and administrative units in Cape Verde, see {{Infobox Cape Verde settlement}}. The template uses the geographical codes of the national institute of statistics (see here) and the 2010 census results (the excel files under Dados por zonas e lugares). So far I only added data for Maio island, but I'm planning to expand it to the other islands. You can see the resulting infobox in articles like Maio, Cape Verde (municipality) and Morrinho. WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.
