Proposal: photo contests challenges

Bristol is a fantastic city to photograph, and there are several Wikipedians, and loads of non-Wikipedian photographers in Bristol. This is a proposal to use the Bristol Wikiproject to improve the already high-quality collection of Bristol photos and give all us Bristolian photographers some fun challenges. The proposal is to set up a series of photo contests, where we pick a different subject (either a specific article that needs illustrating, or a specific shot that we currently have a suboptimal image of) and give e.g. four weeks for people to shoot their entry followed by a week of peer review and voting for the best (several contests can overlap so there is always one in the voting stage). As far as I know no other Wikiprojects (yet) have anything similar to this proposal. I think it would be fun and good for Wikipedia, what do you think? How many people would be interested in taking part? I'm cross-posting this to flickr, if you know of anybody/group else who might be interested, please cross-post. It might be better to say all photos added to Bristol articles in a month reather than making everyone travel to a specific location which might be difficult. I've added a new photo of the church in Bishopsworth - can I submit that even though know it's not a very good photo (I'm a point and click photographer with an old camera)? — Rod ^talk 19:54, 9 July 2006 (UTC)

I don't think such a setup would be quite as useful -- it would end up just being a montly award for the nicest photo. It may be that my idea appeals much more to the photographers than to the wikipedians (I got a positive response on flickr) because they like the idea of competing with other photographers to get the most interesting shot of a particular subject. Additionally I doubt it would have as much an effect on improving the comprehensiveness and quality of Wikipedia's Bristol photos.

I intend to give at least four weeks notice of each topic, so there should be a reasonable chance to get out and shoot. Joe D (t) 20:06, 9 July 2006 (UTC)

ranking 1,2,3,4 etc

I've done an article for Bishopsworth but wasn't sure how to rank it on your 1,2,3,4, scale as it has a photo of the church etc, but can't do the ward map etc. — Rod ^talk 08:34, 9 July 2006 (UTC)

Museums etc

Can you help to imrpove the listing of Bristol museums at List of museums in England? Only 2 were listed when I looked - I've added British Empire and Commonwealth Museum & SS Great Britain but there must be others that should be included, although I couldn't see many on Category:Visitor attractions in Bristol. Should we have an entry for the Maritime Heritage Centre next to the Great Western Dockyard/SS Great Britain? — Rod ^talk 20:13, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

Project list of achievements

Would it be appropriate to have a project "list of achievements" or similar on the project page. Bristol & Avon Gorge have made GA status, and the harbour could probably make it before long. The Council House and Exchange have both featured recently on the front page in the "Did you know" section. List of Sites of Special Scientific Interest in Avon is now a featured list. Clay Hill & Crofts End

I've just come accross the articles for Crofts End, Bristol & Clay Hill, Bristol & they seem to refer to the same place & focus on Crofts End Church (they all need a bit of tidying/wikifying). Project directory

Hello. The WikiProject Council has recently updated the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. Please review the directory and make any changes to the entries for your project that you see fit. There is also a directory of portals, at User:B2T2/Portal, listing all the existing portals. Feel free to add any of them to the portals or comments section of your entries in the directory. The three columns regarding assessment, peer review, and collaboration are included in the directory for both the use of the projects themselves and for that of others. Having such departments will allow a project to more quickly and easily identify its most important articles and its articles in greatest need of improvement. If you have not already done so, please consider whether your project would benefit from having departments which deal in these matters. It is my hope that all the changes to the directory can be finished by the first of next month. Please feel free to make any changes you see fit to the entries for your project before then. Userbox for this project

While I was creating some template for the Nursing wikiproject I put together some userboxes so that members could add them to their user pages. While I was at it I did one for the Bristol wikiproject. If you want to add it insert {{User Bristol project}} & it will show as:

Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Proposal: Inviting editors to join this WikiProject

I recently received an invitation to join WikiProject Munich after I edited the Munich article, which I thought was quite a clever idea. Things are a bit quiet around here at the moment, so I thought that it might be good to copy this idea to try and get some more users involved here.

Whenever anyone edits a page related to Munich, Template:WP Munich Invitation is posted to their user talk page informing them of the existence of the WikiProject. I've made a version of that template for our purposes, which is in my sandbox at the moment, but will be moved to Template:WP Bristol invite, that can be posted on the talk page of anyone that edits a Bristol-related page. Looks better - how does the code "{{#if:{{{1|}}}|Thank you for editing the article [[:{{{1}}}]].}}" work? can the page that they have edited be identified automatically or does the person adding the template need to fill something in here?— Rod ^talk 19:46, 1 January 2007 (UTC)

That is an optional parameter so that we can let people know why they are being invited. You can either use {{WP Bristol invite}} for the generic version, or you can use, for example, {{WP Bristol invite|Horfield}} to include the line "Thank you for editing the article Horfield". Members list & photo challenge

I like the idea of having the invite/welcome template above to encourage others to participate in this wikiproject & I was going to use it when Fig wright edited Politics of Bristol. I then realised I didn't really know who was aware of, or involed in, the Bristol Wikiproject & I didn't want to send it to those that are already involved! Most other projects have a list of "members" so I've started one on the WikiProject Bristol page. If people could add themselves & interests then we could avoid using the invite template to those who are already on board.

While doing this I noticed all the dates on the photo challenge have long past & it seems inactive - but I'm loath to delete it if others are still actively working on it or interested in getting it going again. What do others think?— Rod ^talk 20:35, 2 January 2007 (UTC)

I'm not averse to the idea of competitions as such, but I think if we want to 'fill in the holes' as quickly as possible we would be best not to encourage people to all photograph the same thing. And January ain't the best time for photography here. I would welcome some general debate on what makes a good subject for a photo to accompany an article on an undistinguished place (I have added all too many pictures of churches myself); and specific ideas for what to photograph as landmarks for various localities around Bristol. Spam on Bristol-related articles

A bunch of linkspam has been added to Bristol-related articles by Bristolhistorybuff (talk • contribs) and 82.45.2.76 (talk • contribs), they very kindly added over 2kb of advertising for their website to the Bristol article, which I have since reverted. I could do with some help going through all the other pages that they've added stuff to and either revert what they've done or tidy it up. Some interesting information has been added to Longwell Green, but it seriously needs tidying up. The only article which should have an external link to this website is, IMHO, History of Bristol. I'm at work at the moment, so I can't really sit here fixing it all myself. Gasheadsteve 09:43, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

Re: WikiProject Bristol Invite

Hey Guys, Got an invite from Gasheadsteve to join the WikiProject, but I figure I may as well post my response here. I'd be happy to give a hand, but at the moment my own personal computer isn't working so I have to use my brother's PC which I only get fairly limited time on. However, I do plan to buy myself a new PC soon (hopefully) and I'll keep you guys posted on that.

I'm also still a bit of a newbie when it comes to most things on Wikipedia, I tend to just add little bits of info here and there.

Transport

I thing there needs to be some list of all the roads, statons, ect in bristol because otherwise its gona be hard to know what we have and dont have. mark999

I think a list of all the roads in Bristol would be overkill :) As for the others, that sounds pretty useful. I'm planning on having a tidyup of the project page at some point (unless some nice person reading this wants to do it), and I'll add that to the to do list. I've created a navigation template called Template:Areas of Bristol which I've added to the bottom of the appropriate articles. We could also do with a template to go on the talk page of all articles that come under the WP:Bristol umbrella, similar to Template:WikiProject Biography or Template:Football, to advertise the existence of the project and to help with keeping track of the status of all 'our' articles. Talk page template

I've made a rough version of a template to be added to the talk page of Bristol articles, based on the ones used by other wikiprojects. It's not very pretty at the moment, but the functionality is there.

It has five optional arguments:

• class, which is the standard of the article as it stands. The valid responses are those listed at Template:Grading scheme, i.e. FA, A, GA, B, Start, Stub or NA.
• photo - whether or not the article contains or needs a photo
• map - whether or not the article needs a map
• ibox - does the article need an infobox?
• stats - states whether the article needs statistical information, e.g. population, visitor numbers etc.

The last four arguments all have the same possible values:

• yes - this information is already contained in the article
• needs - this information is needed by the article
• na - this information is not required by the article

If you don't enter any value then that piece of information is not displayed on the screen.

At the moment the template is at User:Gasheadsteve/Sandbox2, and it is transcluded on User:Gasheadsteve/Sandbox3, so if you go to Sandbox3, you can try different values and see what happens. An example of valid symtax is:

| photo=

| map=needs

| ibox=na

| stats=needs

It also puts articles into categories based on the values entered, for example photo = needs would put the article into Category:Bristol articles needing photos. This means that we can lose the very large table on the project page with the status of each article listed on it, this will be replaced by categories. OK, I've moved the project banner to Template:Bristol. If anyone creates a new article, could you add {{Bristol}} to the talk page so that it shows up in the new categories that I'm going to create. It also needs to be added to the talk pages of all existing Bristol-related articles, preferably with a rating. Stats

What stats would be required, other than those covered in the infobox? Simply south 15:20, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

Some articles don't have infoboxes (& there may be some that don't need one or there isn't a suitable infobox available). For areas of the city this would be population data, but for museums, footbal grounds, concert halls etc this may well be capacity or attendance figures. For buildings & structures could be height, diameter, year of construction etc. For ships it's length, beam, displacement etc for schools it might be number of students on the roll etc - so it really depends on the sort of article.— Rod ^talk 15:26, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

I think some info boxes would be really good for i) areas of the city eg. Areas of Bristol

As a resident of Bristol i'm a bit confused about all the area names, confounded by the fact that they're always referred to differently by different people, organisations and government. An example is perhaps Ashley Ward which is a govt. designated Ward, with a census count and lots of data about it but on Wikipedia it's referred to as Ashley Down (and in most of my real-life experience also), but in fact the area, or parts of the area are variously referred to as Montpelier, St Andrews, St Pauls and so on.

Is there a way for WikiProject Bristol to clarify all of these - i'm not sure how exactly, perhaps the officially designated wards could have priority and then have something on those pages that links to the areas that are included in that ward - for example??? I'm primarily concerned that we don't end up duplicating data for example parts of Gloucester Road are in St Andrews, and also in Bishopston so both those articles are likely to have something on Gloucester Road but that's a bit confusing perhaps for the reader. I realise area names are very wishy washy anyway, but it might be worth a try... Any thoughts? Gazzelle 14:09, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

I've lived in Bristol all my life and this confuses the hell out of me too. There's loads of places on the list in Template:Areas of Bristol that I've never heard of before. The problem with the areas/districts/suburbs/divisions or whatever else you want to call them is that the boundaries all seem to be fairly flexible, and new names for places seem to be invented all the time, usually at the whim of estate agents trying to make the location of a house sound better. Perhaps it would be better to either divide the template Areas of Bristol in two, with council wards in the top section and other areas in the bottom, or have two separate templates with this information. I think it would also be a good idea to start a new article called Areas of Bristol or something similar to explain the status of the areas fully. I haven't really got time to do this myself at the moment, so I'll add it to the to-do list on the project page. Gasheadsteve 18:31, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

I've also been very confused by this with trying to do the infoboxes etc. I've also not heard of some of the areas which means I don't know where to start looking on my map sources etc. Iused to live in Lockleaze but estate agents called in Horfield ! (I now live in Somerset). A suggestion for a way forward which could be explained in the article Areas of Bristol and reflected in Template:Areas of Bristol.

Wards of Bristol (to include all those on Ward finder - probably using the same title) ie Ashley, Avonmouth, Bedminster, Bishopston, Bishopsworth, Brislington East, Brislington West, Cabot, Clifton, Clifton East, Cotham, Easton, Eastville, Filwood, Frome Vale, Hartcliffe, Henbury, Hengrove, Henleaze, Hillfields, Horfield, Kingsweston, Knowle, Lawrence Hill, Lockleaze, Redland, Southmead, Southville, St. George East, St. George West, Stockwood, Stoke Bishop, Westbury-on-Trym, Whitchurch Park & Windmill Hill. (NB I don't recognise some of them & not sure about East & West descriptors) - each of these would include a list of the other areas we have articles for which are contained within them. The smaller areas should include reference to the ward within which they are contained.

I don't know how we could deal with articles like: Bristol city centre & Canons Marsh which don't relate to wards.

I have some major problems with articles which were added to the template & 1 line articles created - which I think may be put up for deletion unless we want to expand them ie: Ashton Vale, Baptist Mills, Bristol, Botany Bay, Bristol, Burchells Green, Bristol, Chesterfield Park, Hillfields, Bristol, Kingsdown, Bristol, Newtown, Bristol, Ridgeway, Bristol, Rookery Farm, Rose Green, Bristol, St James Barton (I thought that was just the name of the roundabout), St Philips Marsh, Bristol, Two Mile Hill, Bristol, Victoria Park, Bristol and Whiteway, Bristol. I agree that we could do with a purge of some of the sillier places from the list. When I created the template I included all areas that were mentioned in as many articles and categories as I could find. I didn't want to make the mistake of leaving out a 'good' area just because I hadn't heard of it, but on the other hand perhaps I should have been a bit more selective. All of the single-sentence artices may meet Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion (A1 - Very short articles providing little or no context), so we need to decide which to expand and which to get rid of.

Like I said before, I don't want to delete stuff just because I haven't heard of it, but I'm going to prod St James Barton and remove it from the template. As far as I can tell it only applies to the roundabout and the flats where Avon House North used to be. Gasheadsteve 20:25, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

I've also prodded Chesterfield Park. I can't find any information about the place anywhere. Someone questioned it's existence way back in August 2005 on Talk:Bristol, and nobody posted a message confirming its existence. Gasheadsteve 20:41, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

Greater Bristol & Avon (county)

I've put a merge tag on Greater Bristol & Avon (county) - has anybody got any thoughts about whether both of these articles are needed?— Rod ^talk 20:20, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

I agree that some of it should be merged into Avon (county), but perhaps some of it could be moved to Bristol urban area or into a new section of Bristol? It would be useful to have a definition of the Bristol urban area somewhere on Wikipedia. Gasheadsteve 20:51, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

Unassesed Articles

History & buildings

I also added a few more assessment boxes to Bristol articles. I've done a bit of editing on Bristol Blitz and Bristol Riots as one was replaced with (relevant) copyright material & the other had an "expand" tag on it since January. I've also just come across Churches in Bristol and List of Buildings in Bristol, which I didn't know existed until today. Does anyone know if these are accurate & should we have articles for all the buildings listed? Any help with any of these appreciated.— Rod ^talk 16:36, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

? Bristol main page for peer review

The main article for Bristol has undergone several edits recently & I think is approaching a comprehensive state with good quality writing, pictures etc. Do you think it would be worth putting it up for Wikipedia:Peer review to get other suggestions for improvements which could be made to it? This is one of the normal stages before nominating an article for Featured Article status. I don't think I can do this as I already have Mendip Hills going through a peer review prior to an FA nomination. If someone is willing to put Bristol up for review, it does mean that we need to monitor the comments and suggestions & be prepared to make the necessary edits. Weclome to new members & work to do

There seem to be quite few new members of this wikiproject over the last couple of weeks & this seems like the best place to say welcome.

Activity does seem to have increased as well & I don't think Gasheadsteve's comment on 18th Jan that "Things are a bit quiet here at the moment" applies any longer.

The use of the Template:Bristol on a lot of the Bristol related articles means we have a much better idea of where we are at & what needs to be done. There are still 114 articles which are unassessed, which need to be rated with the scale at Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Assessment FAQ, and we have 90 stubs, 61 start class, 18 B class, 1 Good article, and 2 A class. Of these 91 need an infobox, 100 need maps, 127 need statistics and 72 need photos.

Obviously one of the main purposes of the project is to get the main Bristol article to meet the featured article criteria and any edits/suggestions for this would be welcome. We could put it up for Peer review to get more suggestions of how it could be improved, if you think that is a good idea?

It can be more fun to work together to improve an article & many projects have a "Collaboration of the Month" (or week if there is enough interest) - do you think this would be a good idea, would you participate & which articles would you nominate for this?

I'm sure there are also Bristol related topics which don't yet have an article - these could be included in a "requests" section on the project page.

Hello! I've just popped along in response to the invite i recieved after modifying the public transport page. I've just had a go with St Andrews page, i'll get together some photos in the near future too. I can probably contribute in Montpelier, St Andrews, Transport, UWE but i'm relatively new to Wikipedia so i'm not too confident about creating boxes and fancy things like that. Apologies for missing this message when it was posted, I only noticed it when I was archiving all of the old threads. I think that a Collaboration of the Month is a good idea, we've got loads of articles of stub and start status, but very few high quality articles, so an improvement drive would be good.

I suppose the obvious first article to collaborate on would be Bristol, to bring it up to FA status. After that I would suggest picking a B-class article to improve, or one of the more important start- or stub-class articles. Gasheadsteve 16:22, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

Scheduled Ancient Monuments in Bristol

While checking some references on the Bristol article I came across this list which shows there are 23 Scheduled Ancient Monuments in Bristol - we have article about some of them (& this info should be added to them), but there are others where do not seem to have anything on wikipedia about them - anyone able to look into this?— Rod ^talk 17:48, 6 May 2007 (UTC)

Infobox UK place: 'map_type = Bristol'

Should we be using the 'map_type = Bristol' parameter on UK place infoboxes? I've added it to Henbury to show the effect. William Avery 12:02, 14 May 2007 (UTC)

I added latitude, longitude and map_type fields to {{Infobox Historic building}}, so maps can easily be added to any article that uses those. I also added maps to a few schools because they were in the maps needed category. In my opinion, {{Infobox religious building}} could do with some style cleanup, to make it more like other infoboxes, so I might petition for similar map fields in that too, while I'm there. Thanks - I've just tried this out on Glenside, Bristol & it works but is right on the edge of the map - how do we deal with Kingswood etc which I know are technically in S Glos but we have always included them in Bristol (?Greater Bristol) lists - is there an alternative to map_type = Bristol ?— Rod ^talk 16:57, 14 May 2007 (UTC)

Soon there should be maps for all the ceremonial counties, but I don't think Somerset or Gloucestershire have been done yet, so for now there aren't any. I could easily make one covering the old Avon area, but I'm not sure if that would go down too well? It might be useful for Filton, Kingswood, etc, that are part of the city but not the county. Broomhill

We have an article about Broomhill, Bristol, that appears in fact to be about Broom Hill. Broomhill is on the Frome north of Eastville Park, west of Fishponds, while Broom Hill is on the Avon and GWR next to Brislington. There's very little info on the articles anyway, so I was thinking of maybe just merging them into the Frome Vale and Brislington articles respectively. Does anybody object? Outskirt villages

Should villages which are on the outskirts of Bristol, but technically in South Gloucestershire, be marked as being part of the Bristol Wikiproject? Scibah 16:44, 21 May 2007 (UTC)

My feeling is that anywhere with a Bristol postal address should be included, which means places like Yate, Yatton, Thornbury and Portishead should be included, but places like Clevedon or Wotton-under-Edge should not be. What does everyone else think? Gasheadsteve 17:39, 21 May 2007 (UTC)

I think common usage might be better than post codes. I would suggest that Kingswood is obviously in but lots of places in the BS postcode area eg the Chew Valley are out. bristol-related page names

I noticed that Cube Microplex was moved to Cube Microplex, Bristol. This also appears to have happened to a large number of other bristol-related articles. Is this a part of some wikipedia naming policy unknown to me? These types of changes would seem to violate the normal disambiguation style, and in the case of things like the cube, changing the name is completely unnecessary as there is only one thing called the "cube microplex." I completely agree with you, article names should only be disambiguated if there are multiple articles which would have the same name. When there is only a single article the most common name should be used. Have you noticed if a single person has moved them all, because it might be worth leaving a note on their talk page asking for their reasoning. Gasheadsteve 10:25, 2 June 2007 (UTC)

I made the move when working on Category:Cinemas in England, when I was doing a merge following an CFD to delete a category on independent cinemas in the UK. Since most of the cinema names are so generic and so unindicative, it seemed to me useful for browsers of such a category if the cinema names heading the articles also included the place name. If people feel the Cube Microplex is sufficiently identifiable nationally that Bristol is not required, then I wouldn't object. Jheald 11:01, 2 June 2007 (UTC)

Do you have any other examples of pages that have been moved? The test is whether a user would expect a page on the given topic to come up if they entered the ambiguous (undisambiguated?) title. Cube Microplex seems to pass that uniqueness test. I can see why articles were created as e.g.Robinson's Warehouse, Bristol, anticipating that creation of articles on other Robinson's Warehouses, such as the ones in Gloucester and Newcastle. I haven't been watching these pages, so I can't attest to them being moved, but there are a number of pages named similarly. For example: Granary, Bristol, Hatchet Inn, Bristol, Foster's Almshouses, Bristol, City Road Baptist Church, Bristol, Commercial Rooms, Bristol, County Cricket Ground, Bristol. My impression is that the naming here violates normal wikipedia policy, but more importantly that it violates common sense as anybody who's going to be looking for the Granary, for example, is going to go to Granary and expect to find a disambiguation link to Granary (Bristol) (or similarly named thing). It appeared to me that the "thingname, place" form was reserved for cities, counties and districts; extending it to each of the structures in those areas seems both confusing and like overkill. "Granary, Bristol" is a "similarly named thing": there's no policy to say that brackets must be used. Feel free to create Granary(disambiguation) and make the necessary changes at Granary, and also redirects from Hatchet Inn to Hatchet Inn, Bristol etc, if you feel they are needed. Please don't do anything that will require extensive future edits to Bristol articles when someone decides to create an article on some other "Hatchet Inn", or "County Ground". I'm not planning on doing any major cleanup of Bristol-related articles, I just noticed the Cube microplex move which seemed nonsensical. Updating disambig links is a pretty minor thing for a bot or even a person to do, however, so you shouldn't worry to heavily about that. ? Bristol portal

I had a different development suggestion... do people think we have enough good quality content to create a "portal" for Bristol. If you take a look at Portal:England and the "subportals" for cities,counties etc on the right of the page you will get the idea. South West England doesn't have one yet but we could follow the London or Cornwall examples. Wikipedia:Portal/Instructions gives the code to create it - looks a bit complex but manageable - but do we have enough good quality content - articles, pictures etc to populate it & do we have people willing to keep it updated? Bristol artciles ?? for expansion or deletion

Over the last week or so I've added over 100 infoboxes to articles to those tagged at Category:Bristol articles needing an infobox - some of which need postcodes, populations etc still adding - and I will continue with this (slowly) but I've come accross quite a few articles (listed below) which just say "X is located in Bristol" & have the areas of Bristol template added. They have been like this since Feb. I do not feel there is enough information to make these worthwhile (& there is not even a grid ref or anything to let me add the infobox), therefore I would suggest if they are not expanded in the next couple of weeks we should put them up for deletion - what does everyone else think? The articles concerned are:

• Botany Bay, Bristol
• Burchells Green, Bristol

Nice work on all the infoboxes! As for these articles, I'd be inclined to speedy them under CSD:A1 (Very short articles providing little or no context). I agree that in their current state they are probably not worth having. However as they are part of Template:Areas of Bristol their deletion would leave many red links. Possible coat of arms deletion

Just for info: There's a deletion discussion going on at Commons:Deletion requests/Template:Vector-Images.com for the vector-images.com template and all images uploaded from vector-images.com, of which Image:Bristol city coa.gif is one.

Bristol Doors Open Day 2007

Definitely worthy of a B-Class rating. Article importance

Now that the current stats on the project page are automated, I think it would be a good idea to add an importance rating to our articles (via Template:Bristol) so that we can see which articles are the most urgently in need of improvement. Firstly, does anyone else think this is a good idea, and secondly, how would we decide which importance level to assign. My thoughts are:

• Top: Bristol, History of Bristol, Economy of Bristol, etc.
• High: Major landmarks/buildings, the universities and world-famous residents, such as Clifton Suspension Bridge or Cary Grant
• Mid: Nationally known residents, well known areas of the city, nationally known secondary schools, parliamentary constituencies. E.g. James May, Clifton, Clifton College
• Low: Minor areas of the city, most schools, people not in the above categories

I would agree that this would be a good idea & most other projects have it - however it would be a lot of work re-evaluating the 600 odd articles. Importance level will always be a subjective & imprecise things & I think you've made a good start. if it is incorporated into the project page, then others can add or remove examples as appropriate.— Rod ^talk 14:02, 6 September 2007 (UTC)

Bristol area articles

At the moment we still seem to have quite a few articles about areas of the city that are so short that there's not really much point in them existing. Taking my inspiration from User:Mark999's excellent work on Kingsweston, I propose merging all area stubs into the article about the council ward that they are in and creating a redirect from the original article location to the relevant section of the ward article. Bristol Temple Meads

Bristol Temple Meads railway station is currently rated B-class, but recent edits have probably moved this close to GA. Bristol in Schools Wiki

As a Bristolian (mum still lives on Stoke Hill) I would be keen to see some more Bristol articles in the wikipedia for schools. At present the ones we do have are linked from Bristol. Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

• The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
• The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
• A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. Project Stub?

I'm relatively new to wikipedia editing, but thought I'd try and create a page on Broad Street, however it looks like I might end up with a stub length article about what locals call the "Grand Hotel" (official the Thistle Grand). I was wondering if there was a box I could put on the page to mark it as a Bristol related stub?

Done now, I've been unable to find secondary sources on the "Grand" so that hasn't made it into the article yet. At the moment I've rated it Mid-Importance on the project scale as the source says it was one of the original streets, but think this may mean it needs to be High-Importance. My personal initial view of the matter is that we should use the diffs in the following list. It would be best to discuss here before we copy to the bots list. I have also included diffs for articles that I think should also be included - in most cases it is the current diff, but in the case of the Bristol article it is the last diff with the dialect included. Repeating what I said on Flickr, it's not a church any more. It's on Cranbrook Road in Redland and was Trinity United Reformed Church until it was converted to housing about three years ago. Missing geographical coordinates

Many Bristol articles are missing geographical coordinates. Finding the latitude and longitude of locations, and entering coordinates into articles is straightforwards, and explained at Wikipedia:Geocoding how-to for WikiProject members. Having coordinates on articles mean that they turn up in GoogleMaps, MultiMap and other such places which link to wikipedia based on geo-coordinates.

It is now possible to get lists of Bristol articles that have no geographical coordinates via Wikipedia:CatScan, for example:

• Bristol articles missing geo-coordinates.

Alternatively, if CatScan is down or very slow, you can find them by looking through Category:United Kingdom articles missing geocoordinate data.

The articles in the lists above are currently marked with {{coord missing}} templates, which need replacing with filled in {{coord}} templates containing their latitude/longitude data (or else have lat&long entered into the infobox).

There are about 48 articles missing coords - I hope you'll consider adding coordinates so as to make Bristol articles more visible on the web. thanks --Tagishsimon (talk) 19:23, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

Update. Articles needing coordinates have been placed into a category. 4 articles in Category:Bristol articles missing geocoordinate data do not have geographic coordinates. Coords are useful for making the article appear on Google Maps & many other mapping services; and they allow our users to click through to see the article subject location on a map. There's a short guide to on how to add geocodes to articles ... it really is very easy to do. I hope you'll take some time to ensure that Bristol is as well represented as it can be on wikipedia by fixing up the listed articles. thanks --Tagishsimon (talk)

Bristol articles needing stats

There are large number of articles in the category Category:Bristol articles needing stats which, in my opinion, should not be there. For example what sort of stats can be provided for John Cabot, or the equestrian statue of William III? Even with museum or galleries such as Watershed or Arnolfini, there are no avilable visitor numbers, etc. Jezhotwells (talk) 03:23, 10 January 2009 (UTC)

South Bristol Community Hospital

An American wikipedian proposed that South Bristol Community Hospital should be deleted as non-notable and lacking primary sources. I disagree strongly so have removed the deletion tag, in accordance with the way it is supposed to be used, and stated on the talk page exactly why I believe it should be kept. Of course, I'm just one editor and so far have been the only contributor to the article so I'd like it if others could take a look then do a couple of things: either support or oppose my argument and if applicable make contributions to the article. Trinity Bristol

Hi All
I wanted to add a page about the Trinity Centre and have started working on one at User:Emmalouh/trinitycentre. I know that there is one for the Holy Trinity Church but as the building itself is now known as the Trinity Centre I thought it made sense to have two pages - what are your thoughts?

Any help, ideas, support or advice are most appreciated.

I would suggest that if the formal title has changed a "page move" (see Help:Moving a page ) would probably be more appropriate than having 2 articles which each cover half the topic. Well done - I've gone through & done lots of minor WP:MOS tweaks & moved it from stub to start class. As you say there are some statements which still need citations to support them - particularly statements like "Rumour has it...".
