Walter Hennecke - Hans Hennecke

HI,

I'm writing a biography about the author and translator Hans Hennecke. He was born in 1897 in Bethen. He was a soldier during World War II but was wounded and was sent back home. I assume these two men are brothers, since there are letters that have been exchanged between them (http://kalliope.staatsbibliothek-berlin.de/de/search.html?q=Hans+Hennecke). There is a wikipedia Article about Hans Hennecke if anyone is interested. I know who their father is, Edgar Hennecke, but I'm not sure about the mother (Helene Hennecke ? Gisela Hennecke ?) Does anyone know more about this man ? Can anyone confirm that they were brothers ? I would really appreciate it :).

Sorting

Hi, Whereabouts would you expect to see people like Mel B & Melanie C appearing within categories (for example Category:20th-century English singers) ? They currently appear under M, is that the best position, or should they be under B and C... ? (think they are OK where they are, but I may be wrong - feel free to point me at previous discussions or the relevant guidelines, Thanks GrahamHardy (talk) 11:28, 15 March 2016 (UTC)

I actually moved them from B & C to M, but I am having some doubts whether I did right, the question should really be generalized to all single-letter 'surnames', but I suspect the consensus for the Spice Girls will apply elsewhere...GrahamHardy (talk) 13:00, 15 March 2016 (UTC)
I have no expectation but some facts.
They will be found under Brown and Chisholm, or local versions of those surnames, in most European-language Wikipedias, as few of their many biographies use the 'B' and 'C' pagenames. See Melanie Brown and Melanie Chisholm at Wikidata. (Those linknames are the current English-language labels at WD and also the current Simple English pagenames.)
None of our pages Melanie Brown, Melanie Janine Brown, and Scary Spice is now classed a printworthy redirect. None is now in a substantial category but the latter is in Category:Mel B.

Curtis Yarvin (Moved from WP:FTN)

Curtis Yarvin (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views), one of the main theorists of the Dark Enlightenment - a fringe political figure who has done all manner of slightly notable things, some of which have made RSes. The article recently survived AFD. So the problem here is how to get it reliably sourced to BLP standards, particularly as a controversial figure.

There are a pile of warnings on the cites, but this post isn't intended to subtly ask for someone to steam in with an axe - instead, I'm asking for help with dredging up RSes on this fellow. So please don't go mad with the axe :-) We really seriously want help with good BLP-quality sourcing on this guy. Not primary sources, not blogs, but actual third-party verifiable RSes for everything worth noting about him. This is a tough one. I too have had a devil of time finding anything RS on Yarvin. My gut says he should be notable. But the reliable source coverage is... I will be generous and say it's thin. Part of me thinks the AfD got it right based on Yarvin's influence in the NRx movement, and the Keep could be justified on the basis of WP:COMMONSENSE. The problem is that the dearth of RS coverage means that it will be extremely difficult for this article to ever expand beyond a largeish stub. This contradicts the guidelines for stubs. Honestly, pending better RS coverage that will allow us to add basic info that one would expect in a BLP, I think this should be merged into Dark Enlightenment. -Ad Orientem (talk) 13:18, 3 April 2016 (UTC)
I agree with Ad Orientem on the idea of merger... Right now, I would describe the subject as "contextually noteworthy" rather than notable in his own right... ie he should be heavily featured in the Dark Enlightenment article... with the expectation that a stand-alone BLP article will eventually be (re)created once there are more RSs to merit a stand-alone BLP. This would be in line with WP:PRESERVE. Wikipedia should definitely cover the guy... but not necessarily in a stand-alone article. Blueboar (talk) 14:17, 3 April 2016 (UTC)
On a side note: I think this discussion should be moved to the talk page of WP:WPBIO. Politics and political persons, even political views that might be reasonably described as "fringe" are not usually discussed here because political beliefs are inherently subjective. The topics addressed on this board normally deal with issues where there is a clear (or close to it) true and false. Pseudoscience, medical quackery, bizarre conspiracy theories are the staples of this board. Politics and/or controversial political persons is, IMHO, outside this boards intended brief. I personally think that Communists are crazier than a bunch of bed bugs trapped in a jar full of moonshine. But I don't believe this board should get involved in that. All of which said, I think the concerns raised by the OP are entirely legitimate as per my comment above. -Ad Orientem (talk) 16:35, 3 April 2016 (UTC)

Beverly Cleary

I read in the news today about Beverly Cleary turning 100 soon, so I googled her and ended up on her WP article, which it turned out needs some TLC. There were chunks taken verbatim from sources, some decent sources, but for some reason, a lot of them haven't corresponded to the material they're attributed to. I removed the potential WP:COPYVIO stuff that I notice, but I haven't made it all the way through the article. All of the sources basically need to be verified. He was Thomas McMicking IV not VI. I am Kirk Leslie McMicking Bailey of Welland, Ontario. Thomas McMicking IV was my direct ancestor. My mother was Jean Frances McMicking. She died October 2015 in Dundas, ON--the place of her birth on January 11, 1913. Visit the McMicking Family website for confirmation. There has never been a Thomas McMicking V or VI to date that I know of. Thanks for the correction.

Templates for Notability?

What if a subject may be notable, but the people who created its article just haven't explained how in the article text? Would the above template be the right one to use? I ask, because the Ian Bertram article a list of five references in the Ref section, but no explanatory text explaining his notability, nor any inline cites. Is that the right tag to use? Proposed deletion of Rhys Morgan

The article Rhys Morgan has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

I have been suggested to notify the relevant project of this proposal for deletion (no speed):
  1. Sparse appearance in the media (mostly 2011, see sources);
  2. Not eminent and not performing above expectations in his field of interest;
  3. Only locally relevant (see talk);
  4. Low level of activity since 2011;
  5. Famous for only one event (in the second event he was not the main character; just one among the many bloggers who addressed the issue. Got threats as a consequence of his blog? Yeah. Even my gf got stalked once;
  6. This page cannot be made better, because it should not be here in first place;
  7. When proposed for speed deletion in 2011, people voted for him being notable but were fooled by the fact he was on TV, but being on TV may only be a clue of notability and not sufficient evidence for it;

I am also afraid the voting process might be rigged by over-representation due to his mild Internet popularity and fandom. Should his occasional blog followers get to know about it, they would flood Wikipedia to vote. I thus suggest vote is restricted to only people with Wikipedia activity that occurred prior to 2011. Consequently, I will not notify the author of the article personally. If somebody wants to do it, they are welcome, but I think this would damage the independence and intellectual autonomy of the evaluation process. Consequently, I prefer to alert the project members rather than the original author.

Help with an article!

Hi guys! I'm in the process of trying to clean an article up, but I know that there's only so much I can do today. The article for Ralph Hamor needs a lot of work because I'm not sure how much of it is actually accurate. I just pulled out a sentence that claimed that Captain Christopher Newport died in 1621 as a result of an attack, however my records with Encylopedia Virginia show that Newport died in 1617 of unspecified causes. All we know is that he died around this time.

I'm really not sure how much of the article is accurate since I haven't done an in-depth comparison to the EV's bio of him. All I know is that the Newport claim stood out immediately because it was so obviously incorrect. If that's wrong, then I have to assume that a large portion of the article is probably wrong as well.

Anyone want to help out? The EV is a good place to start since it's run by the VHF and this particular entry was written by one of the Library of Virginia's historians, so I can vouch for its accuracy. (Full disclosure, I'm a volunteer there.) However of course the article will likely need more sources - I know that right now one of the sources is to RootsWeb, which is problematic for obvious reasons. Trying to alleviate multiple problems with a new page

I created a new page Adam Hawkins and got this message up top:

This article has multiple issues. Please help improve it (see how) or discuss these issues on the talk page. This biography of a living person does not include any references or sources. (May 2016) The topic of this article may not meet Wikipedia's general notability guideline. (May 2016)

I listed a reference but must have done it incorrectly, any ideas? Also, he's pretty notable considering he mixed one of the biggest songs in the last few months, and a few in the past few years so I'm not sure why it wouldn't meet the notability guideline.

It also keeps getting tagged and patrolled. I'm a newbie so I'm not sure what this all means or where to look.

I placed a conflict of interest tag on the article not for any particular issue with the content contained therein, as it appears fine in terms of presenting a neutral point of view, but as a kind of disclaimer. Living=(unknown)

Hello. I thought I'd try and tackle the Category:Biography_articles_without_living_parameter backlog. What do I do in cases such as Jackie Good (a minor sportsperson who retired in the 50s)? If he is alive he'd be 92, but it's pretty unlikely that there's going to be information available to verify this case one way or another. Please ping me if answering this question. LukeSurl, I would think somebody should be considered to be living until they reach the age of 125 just to be sure (I am sure that age is used by some Genealogists). MilborneOne (talk) 13:40, 9 May 2016 (UTC)

LukeSurl, I'm not sure I'd take it that way. I think one could clearly state that anyone who was older than 115 (whether determining that by birth date or any other relevant date in their life being before 1901) should have living=no where it is currently unset. However, I'm not sure that we should put everyone else in the living=yes grouping. What would be the compelling reason to set it to yes? Is there a reason it could not be left unset for that group of people? 1bandsaw (talk) 17:53, 9 May 2016 (UTC)
If living is unset for an article this shows up in the Category:Biography_articles_without_living_parameter backlog, suggesting that action is needed. As the template currently stands, there is no way to remove a backlog item without setting living to yes or no. An unknown option is conspicuous by its absence, I am assuming this is because this flag is mostly intended to identify articles which need BLP-level scrutiny, and it is best to be cautious in that regard. --LukeSurl t c 20:26, 9 May 2016 (UTC)

Help with David Harding (financier)

Hi WikiProject watchers and members! I've recently posted a request with a few updates to the David Harding (financier) article, on behalf of Mr. Harding. As I've not seen any reply yet, I wanted to see if someone here would be willing to take a look?

Among the more straightforward edits, there is a request to update his family information. The current details were added based on one erroneous press article (he has tried to get a correction/retraction) and it is a sensitive issue regarding his children. Since this is a more delicate request than most, I'd love if someone more familiar with biographies (and WP:BLP) was able to take a peek.

Auto-Assessment of Unassessed Articles

Following a recent discussion at WP:VPR, there appears to be consensus for a bot task that automatically assesses the class of articles based on classes listed for other project templates on the same page. In other words, if WikiProject A has evaluated an article to be C-class and WikiProject B hasn't evaluated the article at all, such a bot task would automatically evaluate the article as C-class for WikiProject B.

Articles will only be auto-assessed to the "standard" classes (FA, FL, GA, B, C, Start, and Stub), and articles which have conflicting classes listed on different WikiProject templates will be skipped. In other words, this task is intentionally conservative to ensure that it doesn't make any problematic assessments.

This bot task will operate on an opt-in basis. If you're involved in this WikiProject and think auto-assessment would be beneficial, please discuss the possibility here. If there's consensus among WikiProject members to opt-in to auto-assessment (or a reasonable period of time goes by with no dissent), please visit User:BU RoBOT/autoassess and list the project.

Florbela Espanca's DOD

Can I get some second opinions as to what I should put for Florbela Espanca's date of death? I'm posting here as the activity on the page is slow and I don't think I'd get any responses there. I've been trying to add sources to the article as originally there were none and it said she was born 8 December 1894 and died 8 December 1930. That was confirmed in the first source I found (ISBN 9780787668242). It says, "She attempted suicide twice before making the final attempt on her life (by an overdose of barbiturates) on 8 December 1930, the date of her thirty-sixth birthday." However the second source I found (doi:10.2307/344263) says, "When she died in Matosinhos near Oporto from an overdose of barbiturates on December 7, 1930, the eve of her thirty-sixth birthday..." There are limited sources in English about her and these are the best ones I've found so far that cover her biography and aren't just a discussion of her poetry. Fabrice Grinda is a prominent international angel investor, with several hundred investments. He's been profiled in the New York Times, for example. Cannon built an impressive collection of Old Master paintings, principally Italian Renaissance. These paintings decorated his villa near Florence and were donated to Princeton University in his memory by his son in 1935. Reference: J. Wikipedia biography of Dalip Singh Saund.

As a regular reader of Wikipedia I am highly disappointed to read such a short and uninformative article about Dalip Singh Saund, Ph.D the very first Indian American to win a seat in the U.S. Congress in the fifties. The very deficient article says nothing about his family, Indian background, his wife and children and grand children. Precious little is said about his Sikh heritage and about his community in California which State he represented. Crediting image captions

I wasn't sure which venue would be the best one to ask this question at, so I picked this one. I'm also posing this same question at Wikipedia talk:Citing sources. I created an article on Amy Bess Miller fairly recently, and that article includes her bibliography. However, there is another work currently not listed to which Miller contributed. The Shaker Image Second and Annotated Edition includes annotations by Magda Gabor-Hotchkiss, with captions written by Amy Bess Miller and John Harlow Ott. How would I credit this in a bibliography? For the introduction that Miller wrote for the fascimile reprint of The gardener's manual, I just used the "cite book" template and entered "Introduction" into the chapter parameter. But this type of thing I don't think would work in this case. So what would be the solution?--3family6 (Talk to me | See what I have done) 04:10, 16 June 2016 (UTC)

Yes I did make that suggestion and I commend K.e.coffman for coming here. I would make the same request re Wikipedia:Good article reassessment/William L. Uanna/1. While improved since the GAR of that article commenced, there are still questions as to reliable sourcing and unencyclopedic detail. Coretheapple (talk) 13:35, 25 June 2016 (UTC)

Award ribbons in infobox

Hey all, I'm curious if there's existing consensus, or widespread usage of award ribbons in biographical infoboxes. I notice a number of biographies on Indian people that contain some version of the following:

| awards = Padma Vibhushan 2015 Padma Bhushan 1991 Nishan-e-Imtiaz 1997

It's not exactly widespread, (about 40 uses of the Padma Bhushan ribbon as of this note) but before I remove them I wanted to see if this is normal. Looking for feedback on a tool on Visual Editor to add open license text from other sources

Hi all

I'm designing a tool for Visual Editor to make it easy for people to add open license text from other sources, there are a huge number of open license sources compatible with Wikipedia including around 9000 journals. I can see a very large opportunity to easily create a high volume of good quality articles quickly. I have done a small project with open license text from UNESCO as a proof of concept, any thoughts, feedback or endorsements (on the Meta page) would be greatly appreciated.

Antarctic Scientist Biography Drafts

Hello, The Scientific Committee for Antarctic Research has produced a set of biography drafts of notable women in the field. Some are going through WP:AfC and others are soon to be submitted (thanks again, Janstrugnell, Megalibrarygirl, Alisonlee9, Caroldevine24, Mcpolaar, Jenna knox, Ngwilson, Shawjustine, ‎ProfessaRobinson, ‎WavyGeek).

Most are in pretty decent shape for first drafts, however all could do with a bit of copyediting and wikification. A few would also benefit from additional sources. We've tried to get some representation of non-english-speaking women, but references can be harder to hunt down! A number have already been accepted into mainspace, and I've added the articles that are currently drafts below.

Astronaut task force

Hey all. I put a little effort into creating a page where we could have a group of folks working on Apollo era astronaut biographies. Ideally, I would like to get all of those articles to a minimum of B-class, which I would not be able to do by myself.

Frauds and impostors, Rothschild edition

I was part of an interesting episode on Wikipedia, when in 2013 an elaborate impostor named Giovanni Strassini added his name to several Wikipedia pages, including naming himself a 1976 College Football All-American for Ohio State and a 1977 NFL Draft pick for the Cleveland Browns. He had a Facebook, Twitter, and even an IMDb entry with his false persona, and didn't break character offline when he fooled an OSU Buckeyes alumni club as being a "celebrity" of sorts. Long story short, he took it too far and the story unraveled.

The reason I am bringing this up is because there seems to be something similar going on with a fake Rothschild heiress. For a couple of years now (in fact I mentioned this very same issue on this project page in 2014 already) various single-purpose accounts and IPs (all from Sweden) add a certain "Baroness Olimpia Juliet de Rothschild" as daughter of David René de Rothschild (head of the French branch of the Rothschilds). There is no such person (see the official Rothschild Archive biography of David René de Rothschild). However its not only the persistency that makes this case curious, but also the fact that the very same impostor apparently runs a Facebook page with 80,000+ followers, on which she boasts her lavish lifestyles and (believe it or not!) calls out other Rothschild impostors.

If we ever write down a collection of the weirdest anecdotes in Wikipedia, these two incidents should be part of it I think. Anyhow, I just wanted to let the people of this project know, so that I am not the only one keeping an eyes on these articles. --bender235 (talk) 21:58, 14 July 2016 (UTC)

Merge Baden-Powell grave into Baden-Powell

"Real" names

WP:MOSBIO gives us guidance when a bio subject normally uses a pseudonym and the birth name is known. But what to do when the "real" name is not known? This recently came up at Moxie Marlinspike, and I've also seen it touched on at Satoshi Nakamoto. Hello! Recently, I've been working on proposed updates for the Hilary Rosen article, aiming to address some issues in the current entry and add new information about her life and career. Having put together a suggested draft, I'm now looking for other editors to review and make the changes as appropriate, since I have a financial conflict of interest and prefer not to edit directly. Military service categories

An editor has recently been deleting RAF categories from individuals who served in the RAF in the war but were not regular RAF personnel. See for instance [2] and [3]. I believe this is against the spirit of categorisation and should be reverted. Military service is usually very defining for those who served, even if they only served for a few years, and especially if they served in a world war. as was pointed out on the Talk page way back in 2011, the content of this page is a copy of the page for David Cherrill. There is a person named David Olson or C. David Olson on IMDB, but none of the content here appears to apply to him.

I considered other fixes, but lack of sources made me believe it would not be possible to create an article for this David Colson that substantiated notability.

Musicians

Of current project talk page watchers, is there any interest in supporting or critiquing the separation of the Musicians work group into a separate project? Items relevant to that project have been either ignored or not tagged for some time, and it seems that a separate stand alone project might be easier to manage than as a work group. I know that Bio like Years is an ever increasing size and relentless expansion issue, as is musicians if properly managed, and it seems like a good idea. Any thoughts? Ribbons in infobox?

Hey all, what's the general attitude toward award ribbons being presented in a biography's infobox. I'm looking at a lot of Indian actor articles that are waving ribbons like in the infobox. Amitabh Bachchan is an example. C. N. R. Rao, a chemist, has seven of them. As I poke through a few military articles, like George S. Patton I don't see these fancy ribbons. Colin Powell has some, but they're in the body of the article, and frankly, it seems more appropriate for a celebrated military person to display ribbons than an actor. Information regarding New Age artist Ray Lynch

Before I have begun editing his page on August 2016, most (if not all) of his information was from his official website. After really researching about Lynch's life on Google Books and news articles from "American Radio History", I have discovered that Ray Lynch is extremely notable in the 80s and 90s. The most shocking discovery that I have made about the guy was that sued (and later left) his original music label company "Music West" for allegedly not paying artists like him. There is so much information on the guy on both Google Books and "American Radio History", especially the latter. I really need your help fixing Lynch's article once and for all. Beauty pageant winners

Currently there are a lot of discussions related to beauty pageant winners and if they are notable pending in the Articles for deletion process. This is one of the reasons there are now over 500 biographical articles involved in this process. Now there is also a general discussion of whether there should be a specific rule for beauty pageant winners, or whether they should have to pass the general notability guidelines. See Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Beauty_Pageants#RFC_on_creation_of_consensus_standard. It has been open 16 days, attracked the notice of only 11 editors, including the one who posted it, 5 of whom oppose a specific guidelines, 6 of whom support a specific guideline, although there is no where near a consensus of what this guideline should be. Maybe Wikipedia is a smaller project than I think, but a policy that would affect hundreds of existing articles, and depending on how it is written might commit us to creating thousands of articles on people for whom we know about only maybe a year of their lives should at least in my mind be vetted by more people.John Pack Lambert (talk) 06:46, 20 August 2016 (UTC)

A question about neutrality in article naming. Is John Taylor (reality show star) an appropriate name? I feel like "star" is non-neutral. Should it be renamed? If so, to what? reality show personality? only (talk) 02:07, 19 August 2016 (UTC)

I would say "star" is inappropriate. We already have a John Taylor (actor) redlinked at John Taylor (disambiguation), so maybe John Taylor (reality show actor). Kendall-K1 (talk) 13:22, 19 August 2016 (UTC)

  • I would use John Taylor (reality show performer). Star is an inherent judgement call. I am not sure acting vs. non-acting is always seen as fiction vs. non-fiction. In some circles it is more seen as actors are professionals who are tained, reality show performers/contestants are not-trained and so not as good. Reality shows often involve some level of being staged, while actors can perform in historical reenactments that can have varrying levels of accuracy. I guess the actor who came into my 5th grade class portraying Abraham Lincoln, or the monologue acting I saw at Brigham Young University or Emmeline B. Wells were technically involved in fiction, because they pretended to be the person in question, but they had endevored to speak on verified historically accurate information.John Pack Lambert (talk) 06:50, 20 August 2016 (UTC)

I think this article has many content gaps, for example there is only one sentence in his personal information. I think that he has become a rising figure in the community and this post is out of date. Some of the references are closely paraphrased but that is mostly because they are direct facts.
