Disambig city names

Kochi and Hyderabad are disambiguated from identical international city names by the title Kochi, India and Hyderabad, India. I stongly feel that this is reflects the US style of naming non-US cities. I feel that should be Kochi (India) and Hyderabad (India) instead. What do you think? Should this be put into our policy of city names? Regards, =Nichalp «Talk»= 14:38, 29 April 2006 (UTC)

List of Nair Tharavadus contains links to seven articles. IMO except Paliam (members of which were chief ministers of the kingdom of Kochi), all the rest will fail a notability test. Is there any provision to move these under the article page (like List of Nair Tharavadus/Cheraparambath ) to get around the nn issue ? Tintin (talk) 18:20, 1 May 2006 (UTC)
List of Nair Tharavadus itself is very difficult to verify. And also having broken links for all those entries is like inviting new users to start nn articles. --Raghu 19:05, 1 May 2006 (UTC)

Quasi-notable Indian on AfD

Hi, anyone know anything about Maj-Gen Ranjit Lal Jetley? He looks slightly notable to me, but is up for deletion because there are no web sources and the article as written sounds like vanity. JackyR 14:21, 5 May 2006 (UTC)

SVG map ready

Hi! I've completed my blank SVG locator map. Please let me know if there are any issues still pending with the map. Regards, =Nichalp «Talk»= 18:30, 6 May 2006 (UTC)

Is it possible to include Lakshadweep as an inset so that it would be visible (I can't even see it without blowing it up to full size)? Otherwise looks good. Saravask 18:32, 6 May 2006 (UTC)
That would be difficult to achieve. :( =Nichalp «Talk»= 18:37, 6 May 2006 (UTC)
OK, no problem; it was just a minor quibble. Saravask 18:42, 6 May 2006 (UTC)
I must particularly complement the use of different shades of colour to depict PoK and CoK -- especially useful when depicting the part ceded by Pakistan to China. But there is another very small piece of China-occupied-Kashmir that could be depicted. This is in the little bulb of territory that juts out eastward, just above Himachal Pradesh.
Also, squint as I might, I am unable to discern some of the UTs; Chandigarh for one, and unless I'm mistaken, Daman. Diu may just be too small to appear on a map of this scale, right? It's wonderful how Nichalp has managed to show little notches for all four Pondicherry enclaves! and also for D&NH. Its a very nice map indeed. ImpuMozhi 03:18, 7 May 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for the compliment. :) The map is drawn to scale and so Chandigarh, Daman and Lakshadweep are too tiny to be visible in such a low resolution. I have marked out these territories, but since the drawn resolution is ~1500x1700 it becomes very hard to discern at lower resolutions. Regarding the India-Chian disputed territories: Yes, I've seen maps on that region, including other such pockets in Uttranchal and Himachal. I heard that they are resolved and can't find a recent map to show these territories. This is BBC's recent map. This is a 1988 map showing the disputed areas in the Western sector. I've heard reports of the Western sector being resolved, so I don't know for sure, but I'll try and modify the maps. Regards, =Nichalp «Talk»= 06:17, 7 May 2006 (UTC)
I've added the additional disputed areas. =Nichalp «Talk»= 07:50, 7 May 2006 (UTC)
How can we convert your map for use on the states pages? It would cut down on long time needed to load those pages. Saravask 07:58, 7 May 2006 (UTC)
I'll have to redraw it. The problem with SVG images (as with all vector images) is that it is that there is no "fill" tool available. The boundaries of each state needs to be drawn as a closed loop for a fill. I'll get to working on it (like the one on the United States page next week. =Nichalp «Talk»= 12:43, 7 May 2006 (UTC)

He left this: neenga konjam moodalam in an edit summary when doing a revert at Ajith. I am wondering what this means?

Also, he keeps on leaving "Revert vandalism" continually each time he changes something he disagrees with, and feels that if doesn't conform with his POV, then it is "vandalism" - see Hindutva (Nobleeagle) and Pakistan (Dwaipayanc), and has also threatened Zora, Ganeshk and myself for trolling and vandalism at Ajith each time we remove POV terms such as "mega-star" "!" and "mega-hit" from the article.ßlηguγΣη | Have your say!!! - review me 03:26, 9 May 2006 (UTC)

I would like to point out, as I have to Nobleeagle on his talk page, that Sadaat made some edits to the Hindutva article that were clearly POV, but others that were very legitimate. In such a case, straightforward reversion of the edit will not help to bring him into the mainstream of editing. I suggest you shift his edits to the talk page and discuss them point by point. Hornplease 11:45, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

Hm. I'm only on this page because of my notice about RL Jetley above – and here you are talking about User:Anwar saadat. This is a user who urgently needs a mentor. I Welcomed him, and for a while tried to help, but he seems to dig himself into trouble very fast. However, he can also make some very good edits. And he had some very nasty muslim-bashing when he first joined (from the US, I think), so he didn't get the best of introductions to WP. Noble eagle has summarised Anwar's mentoring needs very succintly. Can I add my voice to the request for some good soul to do this? JackyR 12:54, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

Hi, I think Sundar seems to be a good mentoring candidate. Don't want to force him into anything but he's done a good job so far. I kind of interrupted the process though because Anwar came up to the compromise that he'll be good if all non-Tamils are barred from editing the articles. So I came in to tell him that he can't bar non-Tamils, possibly making him angry again. Nobleeagle (Talk) 08:30, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

Anwar Saadat at Partition of India

Anwar wants to add the words "Hindu leader" before Gandhi's name. I object strongly to this, as in the context of the discussion, it implies that Gandhi was a leader of Hindus only. However, everything I have ever read by and about Gandhi suggests that he saw himself as representing the people of India, both Hindu and Muslim (and Christian and Jain and Buddhist and ...), and that he would not have wanted to be described as a "Hindu leader" in a discussion of Hindu-Muslim tensions. I've reverted once or twice, I won't revert any more. Will other editors please get involved? Zora 02:38, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

I agree. Gandhi shouldn't be a Hindu leader.--Dangerous-Boy 23:13, 10 May 2006 (UTC)
Although born a Hindu, there's no evidence that Gandhi was partial towards his own religion. In fact there are numerous cases that show him in a very secular light. I strongly oppose the use of "Hindu leader" as an adjective for him. "Indian leader" sounds more appropriate. -Ambuj Saxena (talk) 08:43, 11 May 2006 (UTC)
His assassin is linked to Hindu organizations, so some Hindus even believed that Gandhi was bad for them. Nobleeagle (Talk) 07:30, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
Some even continue to beleive so. As regards Anwar's edits, I would not comment, as it would be a waste of time. --Bhadani 11:49, 20 May 2006 (UTC)

The content currently present can allow merger. However, if in the future, for the development of AIIMS page (like for going to FA), it will be required to re-create the page to dump the excess (and not so relevant) material. In any case, you should put up a {{mergeto}} notice on the page for people to see and discuss. The issue of notability can also be discussed better in the article's talk pages rather than here. Also don't forget to put the notice on AIIMS page. -Ambuj Saxena (talk) 05:50, 15 May 2006 (UTC)
Furthermore, AIIMS page says: "Pulse the annual festival of AIIMS is biggest inter-medical festival of India if not the whole Asia". If a reliable source can be found for it, its definitely notable. -Ambuj Saxena (talk) 05:53, 15 May 2006 (UTC)
Nope, it should not be deleted, neither should be merged. As a matter of fact, the festival is notable enough. Almost all the college students of Delhi, and many students from other parts of India, know about the festival, just like Springfest in IITKGP. There aremany articles in WP that are much less notable than this one. Also, merging would unnecessarily increase the size of AIIMS. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 18:30, 16 May 2006 (UTC)

Ofcourse it was silly. Category freedom fighters should be reinstated.Bharatveer 07:11, 20 May 2006 (UTC)

I beg to disagree. One man's freedom fighter is another man's terrorist. One man's traitor is another man's revolutionary. Wikipedia needs to avoid giving labels that imply support or condemnation for an activist's goals. Zora 09:02, 20 May 2006 (UTC)

This discussion is getting fragmented as a lot of users discussing on the talk pages which can leave the users here confused. For example, Zora is right in pointing that one man's freedom fighter is another man's terrorist. However, some of the users here feel that there is a need to distinguish activist (used in larger sense), with those who participated in the struggle for freedom. For example Medha Patkar is also an activist, but we should distinguish her from Bhagat Singh as their fields were totally different. We may have to find out a neutral name for such a category, but there is little doubt that the consensus here is that there is need to categorize people who were a part of India's freedom movement, whether they are considered freedom fighters or terrorists. -Ambuj Saxena (talk) 09:31, 20 May 2006 (UTC)
But Zora, the "Indian freedom fighters" is a term that is in wide use. Yes, there are different point of views. And Wikipedia may cater all point of views. But the term that is in wide use should be maintained and given priority.
I admit your view that One man's freedom fighter is another man's terrorist. But history awards those with the epithet of "revolutionaries" who win their goal (eg armed revolutionaries of Indian freedom struggle, Bolsheviks), or at least in the process, win the hearts of millions worldwide (Bhagat Singh, Che). Whereas those who are oppressed earn the title of terrorists (Kashmir??) And in wikipedia, we cannot exceed the popular images or point of views. Of course we will represent all views to maintain the neutrality, but we must also respect the widely beleived notion. otherwise WP cannot be an encyclopedia. It will be ridiculous not to have Gandhi as an Indian Freedom Fighter!! There must be a cat of "Indian Freedom Fighters", under which there may also be a subcat "Armed revolutionaries in Indian independence movement" that would contain the armed faction of the struggle, like Bhagat Singh, Khudiram etc. IMO, in this case Zora is becoming over-cautious. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 09:34, 20 May 2006 (UTC)
Firstly, as Dwaipayan points out, in India, if someone says "Indian freedom fighter" he usually means someone who fought for independence from the British. There isn't much debate on whether that was in fact a fight for freedom or not. There is also no question of confusion over whether such a person was a freedom fighter or a terrorist, because a large number of those freedom fighters fought non-violently, through civil agitation rather than through bombings.
Secondly and more importantly, even if you conclude that the term is POV, it is utterly ridiculous to merge the category with "Indian activists". That category will lump Medha Patkar, Arundhati Roy and Ashok Row Kavi with all those people who fought in the Quit India movement and in the salt satyagraha. Very clearly, we need a category to group those who fought for independence. — Ravikiran 09:44, 20 May 2006 (UTC)
How about a category like "Political activist against the British Raj in South Asia"? Zora 09:47, 20 May 2006 (UTC)

Note to all...there is a Category:Indian revolutionaries that can be used. It is a part of activists category. -Ambuj Saxena (talk) 09:49, 20 May 2006 (UTC)

I think we need to be a little more specific than that. People will start adding Naxalites under that category. We need a category that will specifically apply to fighters in the Indian Independence Movement. Under that we can have Satyagrahis and those who fought violently (like Bhagat Singh et al). We also need categories for those who fought against the British and against the Portuguese. — Ravikiran 10:14, 20 May 2006 (UTC)

But what was the logic behind the deletion of category - Indian freedom fighters?.Bharatveer 09:59, 20 May 2006 (UTC)

Because some people see "Freedom fighters" and the only thing they can think of is "Terrorists". They have forgotten, or they don't know, that there was a time when people could fight for freedom through civil agitations. This is systemic bias of sorts - bias that comes due to ignorance of history. — Ravikiran 10:14, 20 May 2006 (UTC)
Let's reopen the debate, only two votes decided it and it was an atrocious decision. Nobleeagle (Talk) 00:34, 21 May 2006 (UTC)
Any idea how? Wikipedia:Deletion review? Considering that it was in fact merged, is it possible to retrieve the articles that were under the old category? Also, we should be ready with an alternative name if "freedom fighters" is somehow considered POV. — Ravikiran 21:14, 21 May 2006 (UTC)
Let us make one thing clear. We should not make new terminologies in case a term already exists and is quite in vogue. WP is not a democracy. The term Indian freedom fighter is used in school text books, and also in higher standard works. Maximum, we can start cat like "Activists of Indian Independence Movement" under which there may be an added subcategory of "Armed activists in Indian Independence Movement". Not only noted Indian historians, historians from other nations also recognize terms like Indian independence movement.
No way it should be termed "Political activist against the British Raj in South Asia". Not all activists were political, neither the term South Asia was in vogue then in the present sense of the term. We should not cater to all sort of PoVs when there is existing terms.
Bye the way, of course the armed activists were terrorists, because they wanted to create terror in the mind of the rulers. There is no point denying the fact they were terrorists. However, as I said earlier, if you gain your goal by way of terrorism, or, at least, gain sympathy of a wide part of the population, the term Revolutionary adorns you in stead of Terrorist! In fact, revolutionary movement for Indian independence is also widely used term, and I see no point in not sticking to that term. We are not revisionist historians here, neither are we writers of textbooks. I cant see any point perpetuating the debate. The question is technical now, how ro revert/ ammend the categories. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 15:21, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
I am all for using "freedom fighters" provided the category makes it clear what freedom they are fighting for - "Freedom fighters agains the British Raj" might make sense. But enough of talk here :) We need to reopen the debate and I don't know how. Someone more experiences should do it. — Ravikiran 04:54, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

(cut n paste from the discussion on User talk:Syrthiss)

Hi Ravikiran, thanks for contacting me about this. The guidelines suggest contacting the admin involved because (1) there were a lot of cases bring brought to WP:DRV that the closing admins had no idea of and who might have changed their mind with a simple note (as you wrote here) and (2) most of the content on DRV is articles, so its a simple click of the admin buttons to restore the article. Sadly that isn't the case with the categories. I could undelete the cat, but restoring the articles to the category would take a bit more work (basically searching the bot's contributions and reverting them for the relevant categories).
However, I'm afraid that I have to agree with the debate concluded. Freedom fighter is a POV-laden term and while activist may not completely nuance the aspect of these people's contributions to modern India, leaving a category called Indian freedom fighters I believe sets up an ambiguity that could end up with the category populated not only with the people you admire but with perhaps modern-day rebels. I saw in the linked discussion the idea for Freedom fighters against the British Raj, and think thats reasonable (because it can state more clearly what they were fighting, tho I am still not completely good with "freedom fighter")...and several others that could work.
My suggestion to you is to see if you can come to a consensus on that India-related discussion page (which I will try to monitor). With a consensus, someone could create the new category(s) and begin populating it(them). If you feel the freedom fighters category was too many articles to recategorize into the new categories by hand, then we can try restoring the freedom fighter category NOW with the caveat that its final destination will be decided in a timely fashion (and if not, the currently decided merge will be reinstituted).
How does that sound to you? Deletion review is still an option, tho in my opinion it would be somewhat redundant (in that I realize there is a larger community that objects to the merger and am cooperative). I'm also going to copy and paste this to that discussion and your talk page, tho I'd prefer if we continue this either at the India-related discussion board of here (for completeness). Thanks Syrthiss. Now we know what our options are. I am adding a new section at the bottom for a straw poll on which option we should choose. — Ravikiran 06:45, 24 May 2006 (UTC)

Confusion over Selected Articles

There's a discussion going on at Portal talk:India/Selected articles#Confusion over Selected Articles over articles with confusion over "Selected Article" status. I am cross-posting it here as it is unlikely for people to have added the page to their watchlist. Please discuss so that the issue can be resolved. -Ambuj Saxena (talk) 07:12, 21 May 2006 (UTC)

Someone with knowledge in this might want to have a look at the latest edits. They appear to have POV concerns.Blnguyen | Have your say!!! - review me 04:35, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

They seem somewhat POV and seem to be written by a member or admirer of Hindu Unity. However, in some ways, Hindutva organizations like Hindu Unity have the views that are contained in this article. So I'm not making many changes. Nobleeagle (Talk) 07:11, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

It is very obvious that the person who included that website is not an admirer .I have not removed that website, but made certain changes regarding the guj-riots.Bharatveer 07:36, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

Perhaps, I checked the history after you had reverted some of his edits, so I didn't see the whole story. I'll keep an eye out. Nobleeagle (Talk) 07:52, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

Anniversary/On this day section for Portal:India

I was thinking of starting a section for anniversaries of notable events, births and deaths related to India for the Portal:India, similar to Portal:Germany and Portal:Germany/Anniversaries. If there is consensus and enough events can be found, it could be placed on the portal, and would be automatically updated by a reference from the portal using a similar template to that on the German portal, and so would not require human updates daily.Blnguyen | Have your say!!! 06:09, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

Great! This would add greatly to the appeal of the portal. --Dwaipayan (talk) 06:10, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
Sounds good to me. - Ganeshk (talk) 07:51, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
Nice, but need to get it completely organized before putting it on the page, may take many weeks but we don't want another TSA-similar problem. Nobleeagle (Talk) 08:47, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
Portal:India/Anniversaries has been set up and is ready for population

I'm sleepy and tired of this entire article. So could someone please have a look at it and make it better. It survived deletion, so I guess the only option is to improve, I was thinking some prose, but it's so hard to do anything (not even referencing) without debate. Perhaps deletion may have been better, all this article basically does is state the obvious anyway. Nobleeagle (Talk) 10:42, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
