Blurb[edit]

Turtles are an order of reptiles characterized by a shell developed mainly from their ribs. The 360 species of modern turtles comprise two groups which differ in the way the head retracts, namely the side-necked and hidden neck turtles, and include terrestrial tortoises and freshwater terrapins. They have a wide distribution and many live in or around water. The upper part of the bony shell is the domed carapace, and the underside is the flatter plastron which is covered in scales made of keratin. Turtles are "cold-blooded", and are generally opportunistic omnivores. Many turtles migrate short distances seasonally, although sea turtles t migrate long distances to lay their eggs on a favored beach. Turtles are kept as pets and appeared in folklores. Turtles have been hunted for their meat, for use in traditional medicine, and for their shells. Sea turtles may be killed bycatch in fishing nets and turtle habitats are being destroyed. Many species are now threatened with extinction.(Full article...)
