Introduction to Wikipedia

Welcome to the IADL 1110 Wikipedia course page!

This course page supports your work on the Wikipedia Mini-Research Projects (MRPs) in IADL 1110. It offers training modules to help you learn the nuts and bolts of properly editing an article. This course page also keeps the work we do in Wikipedia organized. It keeps track of which articles are claimed, edited, words added, etc.

This course page has been assigned a Wikipedia Expert. You can reach them through the Get Help button at the top of this page. You can also email your UNM instructor if you have questions.

Create a Wikipedia account and join this course page using the enrollment link provided in UNM Learn. (Because of Wikipedia's technical restraints, you may receive a message that you cannot create an account. To resolve this, please try again off campus or the next day.)

Assignment - Wikipedia Training
In class - Choose an article for your MRPs

We've added a list of c- and start-class articles. Navigate to the Articles tab and then the Available Articles option. Before you claim an article, make sure you choose something you're interested in! It can help to review the published Wikipedia page before you decide to claim it.

If you do not find an article on this list that captures you, you can browse start-class and c-class articles and email Lori (@unm.edu lt@unm.edu) to get approval to work with this article. You MUST get approval to work with an article not already on the WikiEdu list of Available Articles.

*This article will be the one you work with throughout the rest of the course.*

See your UNM Canvas course for complete details and a video on how to claim an article.

Assignment - MRP #1 Wikipedia Article Analysis

It's time to think critically about Wikipedia articles in MRP #1. For this project, you'll evaluate two Wikipedia articles, the start/c-class article you chose, as well as a Featured Article of your choice. We recommend you choose a Featured Article (opens in new window), that is a similar topic to your start-class article. This way, you will be able to compare the two, and the Featured Article will give you ideas about how you can improve the start-class one that you will be working throughout the class.

See your UNM Canvas course for complete details.

Assignment - MRP #2 Proposed Article Edits Due

Based on your Wikipedia article evalution, you'll be suggesting edits to improve the article that you have chosen. These will not be live edits -- you'll be turning in an edit log of suggested changes and your instructors will give you feedback before you make edits to the article..

See your UNM Canvas course for complete details.

In class - Feedback on MRP #2 Wiki edits

We should be returning your Wikipedia suggested edits with feedback this week so that you can begin to revise and implement them for MRP #3. These take a LONG time for us to grade because we need to check everyone's sources and suggested edits, but we will do our best to get them returned ASAP.

Assignment - MRP #3 Live Edits & Reflection Due

It's the final few days to develop your article. Now that you have feedback on your draft, you will incorporate ALL that feedback and make your work live.  In other words, you'll be moving from the edit log to the mainspace of your Wikipedia page. You will also have some reflection questions to answer, too.  Please see UNM Canvas for assignment instructions & details.

  • Read Editing Wikipedia pages 13-15 to review moving work out of your sandbox (if you are using the Wikipedia sandbox space, which is optional) as well as a final check-list before completing your assignment.
  • Don't forget that you can ask for help from your Wikipedia Expert or Adrienne at any time!

  • Please note this is due on the final day of the course.*
Milestones

Once you turn in MRP #3, you'll have finished all of the work you'll do on Wikipedia — congratulations!
