We're doing a survey of the history of Bluegrass, Old-Time, and Roots Music (BLUE) styles and practices in the wider context of American music making, surveying, artistic, technological, business, and social developments from the colonial period through the mid-1900s. This course provides students with a sense of the formation of American vernacular music styles, practices, repertories, media, and venues related to BLUE, and how they were part of processes of commoditization, community and identity formation, and artistic development from the colonial period through the mid-twentieth century. Developing an awareness of these contexts and development of research and writing skills (particularly in this Wikipedia project) will enhance students' abilities to create new artistic and scholarly works, and to effectively become part of workplaces and music making communities of BLUE.
