Dear friends:

The active "Wikipedians" from Bangladesh have organized a competition named "Deshipidian 2008" for the HSC+ (or eqv.) students from Bangladesh asking them to develop English Wikipedia articles on Bangladesh related topics. The competition gives away attractive rewards (the first prize is a cash reward of Tk. 5,000/-) and encourages students to participate in a valuable learning excercise that also helps promote our country to the world. The deadline for enrollment is March 26, 2008.

Wikipedia is a free, multilingual, open content encyclopedia project operated by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation. Wikipedia's articles have been written collaboratively by volunteers around the world (including Bangladesh), and the vast majority of its articles can be edited by anyone with access to the Internet. Having steadily risen in popularity since its inception, Wikipedia currently ranks among the top ten most-visited websites worldwide. A small but growing group of volunteers are trying to ensure fairness and adequacy of representation of Bangladesh on this important reference site. As of January 2008 Bengali Wikipedia has over 16,000 entries, while the English Wikipedia has about 2,000 articles on Bangladesh related topics. Anyone can create an account on wikipedia and join this massive collaboration work.
