This is an informal workshop/training session intended to provide hands-on practice with using the RAMP editor to edit Wikipedia pages.

1. First steps[edit]

1.1 Create a Wikipedia user account[edit]

  1. Create your account. Once you have created your account, add your username below under "5. Attendees," using four tildes (this creates an automatic link to your user page): ~~~~.
  2. Add {{Wikipedia:Tools/RAMP editor/Userboxes/Primary}} to your user page to include the RAMP editor userbox there:

1.2 Open the RAMP editor[edit]

For this workshop, a new subdomain of the RAMP demo site has been created for you--with your name on it! Go to http://[your first name].rampeditor.info to access your RAMP homepage.

1.3 Getting started: download EAD records (or create a new record)[edit]

  1. Let's practice adding some EAD records to the RAMP ead directory. For the purposes of this workshop, we will all be working with the same EAD records. Click here to download the records from Dropbox: Dropbox link.
  2. To add the files, you will need to FTP into your RAMP subdomain. Open an FTP client like WinSCP to do this.
  3. Before bring the files into RAMP, we need to update some information in the configuration file titled inst_info.php in the conf folder.
  4. For the $localURL parameter, for instance, we will need to add http://proust.library.miami.edu/findingaids/index.php?p=collections/findingaid&id=, which is the current URL for UM finding aids.

Once you have uploaded the files, you are ready to convert/import them from the RAMP editor interface. After importing the EAD records, you can view your newly created EAC-CPF record. See the first two links under 4. Helpful resources, below, for more information about the EAD and EAC-CPF metadata formats.

2. Ready to edit[edit]

2.1 Familiarize yourself with the EAC-CPF record[edit]

  1. Can you find the authors of the original finding aid?
  2. There are some content and encoding errors in this record. Can you find and fix them? (Hint: you will need to delete some elements from the XML record.)

2.2 Ingest data from WorldCat Identities[edit]

2.3 Ingest data from the Virtual International Authority File (VIAF)[edit]

2.4 Convert to wiki markup[edit]

3. Contributing to Wikipedia[edit]

3.1 Familiarize yourself with the wiki markup format[edit]

  1. Wikipedia provides you with a number of templates to help you enter data consistently. Templates begin and end with double curly brackets: {{...}}. What are some of the templates you can find in the wiki markup?

3.2 Edit wiki markup (citation templates, etc.)[edit]

  1. Because we are republishing text from another webpage, we need to provide proper attribution for our source and indicate that it has, in fact, been freely licensed. To help with this process, we have created a {{Cite open archival metadata}} template that will generate a license statement in the Notes and references section of our Wikipedia page.
  2. Find the {{Cite open archival metadata}}. Where is it located, and what do you notice about it?
  3. At the bottom of the edit box, you will also find a {{RAMP release}} template. You will need to place this template on the Talk page of your Wikipedia article once you have created it.
  4. Go ahead and make some edits to your article. You may want to add new links, citations, etc. For example, this article currently has a {{Cuba-bio-stub}} template. Try a Google search to see whether there is a more specific Wikipedia stub template that would apply to this article.

3.3 Check for existing Wikipedia page[edit]

3.4 Submit to Wikipedia[edit]

If there is no existing Wikipedia page, use sandbox as the title of the new page to be created.
