Meerkat Manor is a British television programme produced by Oxford Scientific Films for Animal Planet International that ran for four series between September 2005 and August 2008. Blending more traditional animal documentary style footage with dramatic narration, the series told the story of the Whiskers, one of more than a dozen families of meerkats in the Kalahari Desert being studied as part of the Kalahari Meerkat Project, a long-term field study into the ecological causes and evolutionary consequences of the cooperative nature of meerkats. With the success of the programme in the UK, Animal Planet started broadcasting it on its national channels in Australia, Canada, and the US. It has since been rebroadcast in more than 160 other countries. Although the show faced criticism from viewers for not intervening when a meerkat was injured and faced death, as a whole Meerkat Manor enjoyed considerable success, and its experimental format broke new ground in animal documentary filming techniques. It was nominated for two Primetime Emmy Awards in 2007, and was a winner at the 2006 Omni Awards and at the 2006 and 2007 New York Festivals Award Galas. (Full article...)

Formby in army uniform, playing his ukulele, surrounded by soldiers

George Formby's career in light entertainment spanned from 1915 until December 1960. Formby appeared as a ten-year-old in the 1915 crime thriller film By the Shortest of Heads; when his father, George Formby Snr, died in 1921 Formby took over his father's stage act. Formby developed his own act and began recording light, comical songs in 1926, accompanied by him playing the ukulele or banjolele. He moved into film work in 1934 and appeared on television for the first time in 1938; he became increasingly popular in the 1930s and 40s and became the UK's highest-paid entertainer during those decades. During the Second World War Formby joined the Entertainments National Service Association and, in addition to his film work, toured civilian establishments and military camps—the latter often very close to enemy lines. Although his domestic popularity dipped after the war, Formby toured Canada, Australia, South Africa and Sweden, and continued to appear on stage in revue or pantomime in Britain; his last television appearance was on BBC television in December 1960. Mehmed VI

Mehmed VI (1861–1926) was the 36th and last Sultan of the Ottoman Empire. He was girded with the Sword of Osman in June 1918, with his reign beginning the following month after his brother's death. Following the Ottoman defeat in World War I, Mehmed VI was tasked with reconciliation with the Allies. However, his settlements were denounced by Turkish nationalists, and in 1922 the Grand National Assembly of Turkey abolished the sultanate. Mehmed VI spent the rest of his life in exile.
