Request: Oval crop. KAVEBEAR (talk) 03:33, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s):KAVEBEAR this is not difficult to do and you really need to start learning how to do this kind of thing yourself instead to loading up this page with hundreds of similar requests. There are plenty of free or very inexpensive applications that do this kind of thing. This project is really for single complicated more specialized projects, not bulk cropping, etc. Centpacrr (talk) 19:33, 29 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I am sorry if you think like that. I am in college currently right now and I don't own my own computer. All my uploads and edits are done in my college's library. You can't download any applications on a school computer without permission code and nothing is saved when you logged out. The only thing I can do on this computer is download images and simple crop (I can't even straighten the images I scan because there is tool for straighten). At this point I am completely reliant on other editors to edit most of the images I upload. This is a request not a demand. I don't demand people to clean up or do simple things for these images, if you don't want to do anything with them just don't; it will eventually just go stale and be archived. --KAVEBEAR (talk) 16:49, 30 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Oh yeah, thanks Jbarta for doing some of them.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 16:50, 30 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It is not necessary to download and/or install image editing software on any computer you are using (even those which are not yours) to do what you want to do to these images as there are many free on-line editors which you can access to crop, straighten, sharpen, adjust gamma, contrast, color, etc, and many other similar operations. Seriously now, for where it's being used, is a transparent background vs white background so friggin important that you are willing to place a blurry and crappy thumbnail into the article? Even if someone's WP page background is off-white, a good image with a white background is better than a blurry image with a transparent background. Help me to understand here. – JBarta (talk) 02:40, 1 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I have the same problem! I usually run a convolve or sharpen tool over the image, then tends to help a bit. — Jdcollins13 (talk) 17:01, 4 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
EVERYONE has the same problem. It's a problem with the wiki software. When it resizes a PNG file it becomes blurry. JPG files resize fine. Unless and until the Wikimedia project does something about it on their end, PNG files are poor file type for many uses on WP. The PNG filetype cetainly can be useful in some circumstances, but not what Lecen seems to like using them for as in the example above. – JBarta (talk) 21:38, 4 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

John C. Breckinridge[edit]

Resolved
 – Awesome job! Thank you so much. I've moved this to Commons and will insert it in the Breckinridge article shortly. Acdixon (talk · contribs)

Article(s): John C. Breckinridge

Request: Remove watermarks. Although it doesn't give the date of the portrait, the information here says it is by Eliphalet Frazer Andrews, who died in 1915. Breckinridge himself died in 1875. Either way, I can't imagine this wasn't published prior to 1923. Although we have several images of Breckinridge at Commons (some pending deletion), this is one of only a few that show him in his military regalia, and it's in color, which is a bonus. Acdixon (talk · contribs) 17:52, 5 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s):

Some are pending deletion because of you. Why would you push for the deletion of images that are clearly in the public domain due to age? – JBarta (talk) 11:25, 6 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Having been raked over the coals over image copyright a couple of times, I usually try to use images that I can definitively give at least a publication date if not an author with vital dates for. It takes too freaking long to get enough reviews at FAC to have one go awry because you can't prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that an image was published before 1923. I've been told multiple times that it doesn't matter when the image was created, it matters only when it was published. So, yes, any photo of Breckinridge during his life would, of a necessity, have been created prior to 1923, but if it was a private family photo that sat in someone's attic until his grandkids handed it over to some historical society in the 1950s, my understanding is that it is still copyrighted. I also understand that most of the copyright zealots on Wikipedia put the burden of proof on the nominator to prove that didn't happen, rather than making the assumption that it's highly unlikely. The only time I assume publication during the author's life is for portraitists (like this one), since I can't imagine painting a portrait – something almost always intended for public viewing – and intentionally then keeping it from the public. The images I tagged either have no source information at all, or the only source information provided was a naked link to www.generalsandbrevets.com, which is now defunct. There is no indication of author, creation date, publication date, original source... nothing. No way a reviewer lets something like that through at FAC. If we can't use it in our best quality articles, why have it lying around? Acdixon (talk · contribs) 15:13, 6 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting you have distain for copyright zealots, yet have become one yourself. If you had your way, thousands of perfectly good photos could be brought into question wasting a whole lot of other people's time. Personally I get a little sick and tired of spending time to improve the images around here only to have some nitwit nominate the image for deletion for some spurious reason. – JBarta (talk) 19:51, 6 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I have not become a copyright zealot. I'm trying to defend the uninitiated against them. I used to assume that whatever was on Commons was OK to use. Then I had a couple of FACs crash and burn for image copyright reasons, learning the hard way that this was not the case. I'm seeking to have them deleted not because I don't think they are PD, but because I don't want someone else to use them under the assumption that they are, only to be bullied into removing them later, leaving a bad taste in their mouths. I did, in fact, try to locate author and publication date information for all of these before nominating them for deletion. I frequently contact libraries and historical societies to get that information. Most of the time, they either ignore me or refuse to give it to me because they are so protective of images they physically hold and want to restrict access to them so they can control the circumstances in which they are used. You'll notice that, in addition to nominating four images for deletion, I uploaded an additional 14 images of Breckinridge, 2 of his wife, and one sketch of him and some other folks to Commons, complete with verifiable PD licenses, and changed the license on an already-uploaded one from an incorrect Euro PD tag to a more appropriate US PD tag so someone else wouldn't delete it. Request: Please clean this up. There seems to some color interference, noise or what not. Still not sure about this lingos. KAVEBEAR (talk) 18:08, 10 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s):

The issues with this image are from being saved as a highly compressed JPG... quite possibly by whoever scanned it. The "interference" are jpg artifacts. Personally I don't know why the JPG algorithm allows saving at this high compression because it's so destructive to the image. At this level it turns any image into junk. If you can get a more decent scan, that would be useful. Other than that, potential for improvement is limited. – JBarta (talk) 23:59, 10 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
