Request: We're starting to see Wikipedia student clubs forming at various places, with interest at other places for starting them soon. Anyone want to take a shot at designing a logo/emblem/symbol for Wikipedia clubs? If they can be customized to create recognizable variants for individual clubs, that would be even cooler. (This may not be in any way feasible, but I find the MIT Media Lab customizable logos to be really cool.) Hmm... I'm not sure. Website, at least, and maybe screen-printing as a likely possibility. Nobody could say for certain what will become of these clubs, but I'm hoping they'll start to take off and that a good logo could bring some extra enthusiasm. B&W or color would be fine. I'm personally a big fan of the Wikimedia three-color designs and style, but of course the Wikipedia logo itself, as well as derivatives like the ambassador logo above, are B&W. If there is a choice, I personally find B&W to be more classy (and encyclopedias are supposed to be classy). There are two basic ways we can go about the "recognizable variants" - one is the dynamic route the MIT Media lab took (via Processing/JS), the other is selecting from a set of pre-rendered images. Vectors are more suitable for logos, but I don't know of ways to dynamically render anything sophisticated into vector.

The pre-rendering route would involve generating (preferably programmatically) thousands of combinations as vector images (see Figure; semi-manually done). The group would select one of these logos, add text to it dynamically via an browser app, and download the logo as one happy convenient PDF. It would take some effort to put this together and work through the kinks. (Probably alot of effort, coming to think of it.)

In any case, I see this task as best coming from an underlying 3D asset, but I can't find a 3D model of the puzzle globe/pieces. Do you know if one is kicking around in Wikimedia? Jon C (talk) 18:32, 19 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

edit: While dynamic generation is spiffy cool and all that, I suspect it's a grand solution for a non-existent problem (I'm prone to that...) If we're looking at only a dozen of clubs or so needing logos per annum, it may be best to make some samples of what logos could look like, work out method to streamline the preparation, and then craft the logos by hand upon request. How much real-world shininess do I try to preserve in the vector version? The eagle would be disappointing if it was just flat yellow. I think your best bet is to use the heads from the state emblem and modify them to fit the image. By the way the font used in the logo is Trajan Pro, most probably Bold, and you can take the border from File:Mississippi-StateSeal.svg or File:Seal of North Carolina.svg. That would have been useful information last night, before I spent ages adjusting the glyphs of Garamond. :) It's going OK, though, and I've begun drawing the eagle (autotracing it seemed a non-starter), but it must wait some 12 hours or so now while I do some real-life things.  Card Zero  (talk) 17:55, 19 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
