Wikipedia:Featured sound candidates/June 2010

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Please cut and paste new entries to the bottom of this page, creating a new monthly archive (by closing date) when necessary.

  • For promoted entries, add '''Promoted Example.ogg''' --~~~~ to the bottom of the entry, replacing Example.ogg with the file that was promoted.
  • For entries not promoted, add '''Not promoted''' --~~~~ to the bottom of the entry.
  • For entries demoted, add '''Demoted Example.ogg''' --~~~~ to the bottom of the entry.

Use variants as appropriate, e.g. with a large set of files, all of which pass, '''Promoted all''' is fine, but if one of them didn't pass for some reason, make sure that's clear. Wikipedia:Featured sound candidates/File:Russian anthem at Victory Day Parade 2010.ogv

Lady Windermere's Fan[edit]

It's the only example of a recorded drama production on Wikipedia, performed to professional standard, and a fitting illustration to the article on Oscar Wilde's classic play, Lady Windermere's Fan. It also reuses the Wichita State University recordings of The Four Seasons (Vivaldi) as an ambient and dramatic soundtrack, which are current featured sounds on Wikipedia.

  • Nominate and support. I would love more people to hear it, and for other people to produce such things and license them for the world to enjoy. FergusRossFerrier (talk) 04:27, 27 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support --- Sound quality is excellent, and encyclopedic value is very high. A brilliant contribution to Wikipedia! NotFromUtrecht (talk) 07:58, 7 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support: Echo NotFromUtrecht. Excellent recordings! Maedin\talk 16:45, 10 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Cat purring[edit]

Edit by X!

I decided to try my own hand at recording of wildlife, and having a few animals to hand...

  • Nominate and support. Shoemaker's Holiday Over 210 FCs served 23:03, 3 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Weak oppose Great idea for a sound, and close to purrfect, but around seconds 2-3 it sounds a bit blown out. Staxringold talkcontribs 02:09, 8 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support Very realistic. Edison (talk) 19:09, 8 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Weak Support per Staxringold. Might want to make mention of the cry sound at the end, as well. upstateNYer 03:42, 10 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • The sound should be shortened to leave the cry part out. Thue | talk 12:52, 13 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose Dosen't do it for me, especially the cry at the end. It also seems that the cat is too close to the microphone, because it seems like I am catching extra reverberations.   Nezzadar    21:05, 21 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Conditional support if you cut off the cat's cry at the end of the file. But the purring sound is really funny (really silimar to human's snoring)--Caspian blue 21:37, 21 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment I have done a little editing to the file. I've cut out the cry at the end, and I worked a little magic to make the second purr less dramatic. (X! · talk)  · @674  ·  15:11, 9 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

File:God Defend New Zealand instrumental.ogg[edit]

The national anthem of New Zealand, a well composed piece with no quality issues and high EV to the article God Defend New Zealand. Probably could also be added into the article for New Zealand too. Created by the U.S. Navy.

  • Nominate and support.   Nezzadar    15:10, 26 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support (see convo below) Excellent quality and supports the article very well. Jujutacular T · C 18:37, 26 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment Are we sure on the freedom of this file? Definitely good quality, but the source reads: "The music files on this website are intended for official use by Department of Defense and U.S. government offices only. Exceptions to this policy will be considered on a case-by-case basis." If it's PD it's PD, but that doesn't seem like what you'd say for a PD file. Staxringold talkcontribs 05:59, 28 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
My opinion is that the navy is the navy. It was made by the navy, so its PD.  Nezzadar [SPEAK]  22:34, 28 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Unless I see good argument otherwise, I'd have to agree with Nezzadar. Under "Feedback" at the Navy site [1] there is an email listed. Maybe we should enquire at WP:OTRS? Jujutacular T · C 23:38, 28 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Hosted on the Navy site does not equal created by the Navy. That page does not say it was performed by the Navy band. It's only PD-Navy if produced by Navy members in performance of their duties. Staxringold talkcontribs 20:54, 29 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Hadn't even occurred to me, good catch. Unless we can confirm it was recorded by the navy, I don't think we can promote this. Jujutacular T · C 22:20, 29 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support Neat then. Staxringold talkcontribs 23:55, 3 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support, given the confirmation. I've added this confirmation to the file description page. Jujutacular T · C 00:06, 4 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support as the uploader. User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 00:14, 4 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support, any reason why this can't be closed as successful? BencherliteTalk 22:31, 22 June 2010 (UTC) Struck; if I had know that it was open to me to promote, I would have done so[reply]
