Portal:Medicine[edit]

I nominate Portal:Medicine because I think it has the following characteristics:

  • It demonstrates good content about medicine
  • It encourages and facilitates adding to this field of wikipedia
  • I find it very useful, attractive and ergonomic
  • It is maintained on a regular basis
  • It follows the standards of wikipedia (like the Manual of Style)
  • It has everything to it!

Object:

  • No archives for the "Selected article" or "Did you know" sections.
  • No list of major topics.
    • Done. I created a beta version. :)NCurse work 19:02, 30 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • The "Quick links" section is mostly redundant with the "Categories" section.
  • The "Selected picure" section fails to include an image credit.
  • The "Open tasks" section is incomplete.
  • Many of the subpages (notably the "Selected article" and "Did you know" ones, but probably others as well) still reside in the Template: namespace rather than the Portal: one.
  • Most importantly, this portal is not maintained on a regular basis. The content has been rotated only a handful of times in the past year, if at all.

As maintainer of the portal (since friday :) ), I'll fix these problems. When I will be ready, I'll let you know. Thanks for the comments. As a new maintainer, I can guarantee that the portal will be up-to-date. NCurse work 18:48, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I've made some changes. I think it's better now. But list of major topics is not ready yet. One day needed. :) NCurse work 20:11, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The structure of the portal has been reformated. So now it's more modern... :) NCurse work 19:02, 30 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Nice work! Kirill Lokshin 13:54, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Images on the portal should not use thumbnails unless the background color for the content boxes is "transparent". On light background, the effect is subtle, but this kind of thing is what happens.--ragesoss 11:58, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Done. No thumbnails on the portal. NCurse work 14:38, 2 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've changed to currentyear, currentweek system. I created templates for featured pictures for a month. If you have comments about how to improve the portal, don't hesitate... :) NCurse work 18:41, 2 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Very nice; you should probably do the same with the articles. The only concern I still have is the image credit on the selected pictures. Kirill Lokshin 03:15, 3 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Great work! Make sure those updates keep coming, though! ;-) Kirill Lokshin 18:44, 5 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Object - this may be a temporary edit that is in the process of being updated, but one of your "selected" boxes currently only displays a redlink. Furthermore, the page seems to be quite lop-sided to the right hand side - consider moving a box to the left to even it up. I like your "Medicine Topics" box, but in terms of the ergonomics of the portal, it should be more prominent. I would suggest changing it's 3x2 formation to 2x3, and having it beneath the "selected image". The thing to remember is that portals are meant to do exactly what they say on the tin - they should provide easy-to-use access to any sub-topic of its subject without fuss. Although this portal all the groundwork - archives etc. - it seems to lack in the things that actually matter. DJR (Talk) 09:23, 6 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

3X2 will be 4X2 or more in days, just I had pathology exam. :) But I put it under the selected image. Thanks. :) NCurse work 16:40, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Fixed the redlink. --Steven Fruitsmaak 15:40, 6 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Another small issue is that your "Selected article" and "Selected picture" have references to "Featured" archives. I think some kind of consistency is required, and the "featured" annotation should not be used for content that is not Wikipedia:Featured content. DJR (Talk) 13:37, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Done. Thanks. NCurse work 16:37, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry to be so pinickity, but you might want to move the page to "Selected article"/"picture" too - at the moment it's just a piped link to a mis-named page. I had to do the same thing at P:L and I think it's an important rule so that "featured" status isn't undermined too much. Looking good though. DJR (Talk) 16:51, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Done. The picture archive is not termed "featured", I believe. I thought that featured article was not a bad name, since the selected articles were all featured ones (until now), but then the box title should have been changed.--Steven Fruitsmaak 17:14, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah I would agree - where there are enough articles/pictures of featured status then having sections for them is naturally better than "selected" ones. However, consistency within the portal is more important, so either everything has to be "featured" or everything is "selected". And cross just causes ambiguity. But yeah I think that's good now. Until I have time to examine further, I'll stay Neutral. DJR (Talk) 17:21, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Support - looks perfectly up to scratch now. DJR (Talk) 12:48, 8 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Minor objection. I suggest the WikiProjects and Did you know... boxes swap positions, with DYK located above the big topics box. This would put everything that is for the "reader" together. Possibly, "related portals" should go above the topics box, too (if the fit can be made, with keeping the columns balanced). --Aude (talk | contribs) 11:59, 8 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry but: related portals is not an important box, so it should stay down. Above somebody asked me to put topics box below Selected picture box. Now you ask to change these positions. I think the portal's state now (regarding boxes) is the best way we can choose. Thanks. NCurse work 12:23, 8 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
For "Related Portals", I am more indifferent to the position of the box. These links are useful for navigating between portals. Though, having these links at the bottom can work. But, the position of the "WikiProjects" and "Did you know" boxes are out of place. Seems like an easy fix, so that everything for the "readers" is together, and items intended for "editors" are also together. With that minor objection addressed (along with continued, regular portal updates), I'm inclined to vote in support. --Aude (talk | contribs) 14:01, 8 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I understand you know. I switched boxes. Thanks. :) I made 4-4 templates for selected pictures and articles in advance (means 1 month). And I plan to make more. NCurse work 14:20, 8 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Support. Portal looks excellent. Thank you for making this change, and all your efforts in improving this portal. --Aude (talk | contribs) 14:23, 8 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • I must say the portal is ready. I created 4 columns in topics box. There are 4-5 templates in advance for selected articles, pictures. Evertything is ready to be featured. :) NCurse work 16:37, 8 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. :) Question: can I support this nomination as the maintainer? Or it would be unfair? NCurse work 06:19, 12 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
If you didn't nominate the portal, you may support it, regardless of your responsibilities to it.--cj | talk 09:21, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Minor objection, overall a great portal. The significant improvements made over the past month deserve to be acknowledged. However, before I support it, I'd like a few concerns addressed. First, I made formatting changes to Selected article that need to be carried over to subsequent weeks. Secondly, 'Categories doesn't seem comprehensive enough, and it should be clear which are subcategories of Category:Medicine.--cj | talk 09:21, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I have an exam on friday, but after that, I'll do these things and will let you know when it'll be ready. Thanks for comments. NCurse work 16:45, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I transferred the style changes, thanks for suggesting it!--Steven Fruitsmaak 22:13, 15 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Categories are the most importament ones, and Category:Medicine is seeded as the main category. That's all. NCurse work 09:30, 17 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Done. I've expanded the categories, also with categories from the closely related categories Health and Biology. It is now clear which categories are main and which are subcategories, however there is a great deal of subjective organisation here: e.g. some categories are subcategories of both health and medicine. Altogether, this should resolve the issue. --Steven Fruitsmaak 23:38, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Support: with regards to image formatting, the IE glitch is avoided by starting the text immediately following </div> with no breaks or spacing. Also, with the html format, it is not necessary to use "|left" or "|right" markup. As on the Main Page, it's preferable to keep images within a maximum of 100px.--cj | talk 04:13, 20 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Now we're ready with the portal. Now categories created, category box is reorganized, new templates for ex-did you know and selected articles. So I support. :)) NCurse work 08:49, 20 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
