Discussion[edit]
Normally, a bot request includes only one task; you have at least three in there. I suggest you strike out the parts about delivering newsletters and replacing unused templates, and file additional requests for those tasks instead. That will make it clearer to everyone exactly what is being discussed, trialled, and possibly approved where. Although I'm not sure I understand the part about "search and replace unused templates or images"; if the template is unused, why would it need search-and-replacing? - I have removed at your request. It will be searching and replacing images.--Mixwell!Talk 01:57, 21 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
How do you plan to find these images? Is there a specific reason they should be replaced? --ThaddeusB (talk) 19:59, 20 December 2008 (UTC):[reply]
- There are templates that have the use of images that have already been SVG'd such as wich was based on a GIF one. I plan for it to do it as soon i find a image that hasn't been replaced. --Mixwell!Talk 01:57, 21 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
- So you intend to find the images manually in some manner, with the automated use of AWB limited to doing the actual replacements? I for one wouldn't support a fully-automated search-and-replace, as it takes a human eye to determine whether the vector version really is equivalent (versus someone doing an incredibly bad job). Anomie⚔ 02:44, 21 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
- I'm a bit confused. If I understand correctly, what you want to do is replace "something.gif" with "something.svg".
- I am assuming you want to do this because the SVG version is nicer looking (as was the case in your example)? Or perhaps there is a wiki guideline about this? (I'm not very familiar with image policies since I never deal with them personally.)
- Will you be finding the "something.svg"s manually?
- Once you have a "something.svg", I assume you'll do a "What link here" to get a list of pages "something.gif" still appears on?
- You are right, if i see a image that has been replaced with a SVG, i will use the what links here, check if it's templated or transcluded in and replace it.--Mixwell!Talk 14:04, 21 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I see in Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/User manual#More... that AWB can "replace/remove/comment out Images". It seems like that would be a much safer way to replace images than you writing regular expressions yourself to try to do it. Is there a reason you do not intend to use that feature? Anomie⚔ 02:44, 21 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
- I misread my previous quote and you are right. I will use that feature. :) --Mixwell!Talk 14:04, 21 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
- Can you please get a more descriptive account name? Cream is your former username and your IRC nick, which may confuse users, who are not aware of the rename, for instance. What about "CreamBot" or "MixwellBot" or "MixBot"? Maxim(talk) 00:39, 22 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
- From Wikipedia:BOT "The account's name should identify the operator or bot function, and must make the nature of the account clear by incorporating the word "bot", with exception for bots already active on other wikis." so you definitely have to rename --ThaddeusB (talk) 02:41, 22 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
- Done Username has been registered... Dumping Cream... User:Mixbot will take effect immediately. --Mixwell!Talk 17:34, 22 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Approved for trial (25 edits). Please provide a link to the relevant contributions and/or diffs when the trial is complete. Category:Wikipedia images available as SVG should help you find images to process; remember to verify the quality of the SVG before replacing. Don't do more than 5 replacements for any one image, I'd like a good sampling. Anomie⚔ 17:47, 22 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Don't really see where it says where this bot will be editing, but it should not be editing things like User: pages of indefinitely banned users just to change a .gif to an .svg. That's just silly and unnecessary... There may be other similar cases. --MZMcBride (talk) 09:59, 28 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
