Atsumori

Thank you for your expansion of my short article on the play Atsumori; I had not realized there was an infobox for Noh, and it's a fine addition. I suppose it depends on one's interpretation or translation, but the version of the play I read did not mention a "Reaper", but rather a "Youth", who burns firewood to collect salt out of seawater. There are references to a "mower", but a Reaper? Seems the wrong connotation to me, even if the denotation (reaper more or less equals mower) is correct. Thoughts? The word "reaper" comes from the (outdated) Waley translation, which is quite emphatic that the people Kumagai meets are reapers: "They that were reaping,/Reaping on that hill,/Walk now through the fields/Homeward, for it is dusk." I've just checked and they're literally "grass-cutters" (草刈) so probably "mowers" would be better.

Yes, now there's an infobox template for Noh plays — I just made it. (So any questions or suggestions for alterations can be directed here.) My hope is to put up at least a dozen articles on the most famous plays. Xanthoxyl 09:34, 27 January 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, I was using Royall Tyler's translation; these things can be kind of iffy. Thank you for your hard work - I continue to aim to gradually, slowly expand Wikipedia's coverage of kabuki and joruri; coverage of the traditional Asian arts is sorely lacking, and I'm glad to have yet another ally in working to resolve that. Ack, I didn't mean to go sticking extra tags on there if you were working on it, sorry about that... I found the tag a few hours ago, and then the internet went down before I could actually save the edit adding it. I've translated about half of it at this point, though it needs massive cleanup and reorganizing still. I was planning to do that once I'd finished the translating, but I can edit in what I've done so far, if you want to work on that part, or translate the rest -- I'm starting to get in over my head with all the scientific terms. Noh - Ikuta Atsumori

Hiya. I've just created an article for Ikuta Atsumori, another play based on the story of Atsumori. The translation I read does not explain which character is waki, tsure, or shite, so I sort of guessed. My logic being that Atsumori is shite because he's the title character, and the whole thing derives from his legend; his son might be waki, because he's the primary character other than Atsumori, and is not really his companion, so he couldn't be tsure, I don't think. The monk, though he introduces the play, and might therefore normally be the waki, more or less just accompanies the boy, and so I labeled him wakitsure. List of Noh plays

In List of Noh plays: A-M and the other one, what do the = signs signify? I ask because I am not sure how to interpret that for the bibliography section of Komparu Zenchiku. --Gwern (contribs) 01:50 12 November 2007 (GMT)

If a play has two names it is listed twice. For example, Adachi ga hara equals Kurozuka because they are the same play. I ought to mention that only a few plays are definitely known to be by a specific author, so don't be surprised if there are contradictions in source material. That makes sense, although I personally prefer a 'or' instead of an '='. And I know what you mean by contradictions - they're there even for well-documented poets like Fujiwara no Teika, and it seems that for Noh plays things are even worse... --Gwern (contribs) 02:22 12 November 2007 (GMT)

I used "=" because of the risk that that "or" might be taken to be part of the title (Adachi ga hara or Kurozuka). In the kanji column the problem is in reverse because "=" looks like a character. The symbol "≠" appears once, I think.

Ah, I solve that by always italicizing the romaji phrases individually (to follow the usual style guideline that foreign words are italicized), so there's no ambiguity about whether the or is part of the title. --Gwern (contribs) 03:24 12 November 2007 (GMT)

If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

Mihai cartoaje's talk page

Hi, I agree that Mihai cartoaje's habit of removing critical (but not other) messages from her/his talk page is troublesome, but there is actually nothing in policy against this. It is different for the talk pages of articles, where deleting comments (especially those of others) is considered serious vandalism, but a user's talk page is their own space. Thought I'd tell you before this becomes another edit war for poor Mihai cartoaje to be involved in :-) Happy editing! --Crusio (talk) 08:42, 3 February 2009 (UTC)

I absolutely agree, it doesn't look good at all (especially since the deletions are so selective). Note that this person left an unjustified tag on my talk page, which I left in place. Motif of harmful sensation etc

There's nothing to stop you copying any Wikipedia page to your own computer for your own use in whatever way - contributors "give away" all rights to their contributions for use for any purpose. You can request that deleted articles be e-mailed to you, I don't know quite how that works, but in the case of Motif of harmful sensation the deleting admin was user:Sgeureka who may be able to do it or give you more information. pablo_hablo. 16:46, 31 March 2009 (UTC)

For popular terms, when someone types it in, it is a practice in Wikipedia to assume what it is that they want if only one use is known. If I know only one use for a word (such as Lubdan, when I first saw it I thought 'never heard of that before, nobody made anything, so Leprechaun). If alternative uses for a word exist: this means that a redirect is inappropriate, I don't deny that. What I am denying is that the solution is to delete it. The solution is to create a disambiguation page. If people want to do a search they can click 'search'. Newbies are going to be button-oriented and click either 'go' or 'search' anyway. This entire dispute resolves around the idea that someone will press 'enter' and give up on the topic existing on Wikipedia. Searches will show pretty much anything, even if a name of a non-notable Bavin were listed as a reference or something on an otherwise unrelated article. Deleting does nothing to expand Wikipedia, it only cuts off the beginnings of a good disambiguation pages. Many words fluctuate back and forth between redirects to a major article (like Obama only began redirecting to Barrack in 2007) and disambiguations as other incarnations of the word become more notable. In this case, if there are other notable incarnations of a word on Wikipedia, here is what I've been telling people: be bold and add them, edit the redirect into a disambig page. Disambiguation pages are desirable, yet people simply just delete it and don't create anything. If people are legitimately concerned for important mentions of a word having other notability then it would be being done. Since it isn't, objections are clearly deletionistly centred. In some cases this is either targeted at redirects, or at disambigs, or at both. Or maybe just ones made by certain authors a tagger has a beef with. Tyciol (talk) 03:11, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

I do not understand why I am obligated to do that. Wikipedia is a cooperative effort. Disambiguation pages are amended and expanded CONSTANTLY. Most likely the majority of disambiguation pages do not include a reference to every conceivable article on Wikipedia which contains the term. While that's a problem, I still maintain the solution is not to wipe them out, but to continually search to improve them, just as we seek to improve anything we come across.

With Postl for example. This was a redirect, I made it into a disambig. I did not delete the redirect because it wasn't detailed enough, nor did I harass Stan Shebs and threaten him with blocking for omitting the famous wrestler Hornswoggle even though Postl is also his name! This is the way we do things. The way it works is: people refer a family name to a person's article if that family name is considered notable to that person or something like that. If someone did not even take the care to list somebody on a disambiguation page about their name, then they just were not notable enough. Notable articles naturally attract enough attention that people editing the article will add them to the disambiguation pages on their own.

Wikipedia is always 'forming'. You can't expect a perfect disambiguation page to be created right off the bat, it's an unrealistic standard. If that happened then we'd have no need for a history because you would never need to revise a redirect or a disambiguation. Redirects do not hide possibilities. Redirects do not disable the search function. What they do is make an article stand out in association with the word, just as disambiguations make more than one article stand out in association with the word. It is not correct at all to hamper the editors' Wikipedia experience by annihilating their work simply because it wasn't good enough on the first shot.

Not everyone has time to search Wikipedia for potentially hours simply to create a disambiguation page. When I am aware there's more than one person and I have time: I do my best, yeah, but why on earth are people not cooperating and simply deleting things when nothing is actually being obscured at all, but rather, it's a sign pointing in a popular direction? I will not forget about R/DAB, sorry, I know too much about it, an I'm very good at making both of them. This is not about ignorance, it's about a disagreement in policy. The only thing I lack an understanding of is this 'hiding' justification used to attack the redirects of names. An article (disambig being a type of one) not being extensive enough has never been justification for deletion. Short articles get listed as stubs. If a redirect is known to be something that could redirect to other articles: you make it into a disambig. That's the correct step. If someone lacks time to make a disambig covering everything then there should be some kind of disambig-stub or something we can use, right? Tyciol (talk) 05:00, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

A redirect can be circular, but one person cannot make a redirect circular unless he makes both the link on the page and the link back to the page. I only make the link back to the page. I intended to either delete the links later the next time I passed through (they were bad red links prior to that, which nobody was making articles for) or else hope that if someone had made them intending to make actor articles that they would go expand the redirects into articles instead. I am not typing lots to defend redirects like those: I'm typing to defend ALL of my edits. The way you describe it is as if the only redirects I am making are circular or something. Far from it. Most of mine are quality, and they just get lumped together because of a minority of controversial edits. This is policy conflict: people are disregarding the encouragement to expand redirects, violating it by deleting them. I don't look at my edit counts, and believe me, I'd have a far smaller count if people would quit assaulting good material. If it were people simply reverting circulars I'd probably ignore it, but this is serious bad faith and WP:BULLY going on. Tyciol (talk) 05:57, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

Regarding pentalogies and the like

Hi - Not wanting to start an edit war, I thought I'd explain my thoughts on the use of these words. I've noticed among the community an overwhelming desire to group ANYTHING with a certain number of parts as an "~alogy", whether it forms a coherent work or not, and although I doubt the validity of some of these words, you make good arguments for "hexalogy", although some of the other examples on the same list are fairly dubious.

In my haste, I reworded the my reference to lack of dictionary use of the words on the trilogy page, but perhaps we should try to come to some consensus as to how to explain these words without encouraging their use for anything but true "~alogies".

The only thing I objected to was the claim that a well-formed word that isn't in dictionaries is "not real" -- dictionaries have special rules about what they include, and it's not as though these words are being pulled out of thin air. However the articles in question aren't any good and I will try to rewrite them. Examples need to be given, but the examples are silly. They don't explain why authors would choose to write in groups of six or seven and this is actually the interesting subject. For example, Plato's works were sometimes arranged by editors into trilogies or tetralogies [1] on different assumptions, and there is Nezami's Pentalogy, and the Enneads so there are definitely secondary sources on the subject.
