Question on a user

I just came upon this from JacquesNguyen (talk · contribs), and I was wondering what you thought of it. I was just doing a term paper and was using sources from the article in question when I noticed that that the section headers lined up perfectly to the other article. I did notice something was up a few weeks back, but as some of what is in there is sourced, but most of it isn't, should I look into doing a CCI report, as I suspect that this might also be yet another copyright violation that they got away with until now. Either way, I look forward to hearing back from you, and I hope to be around CCI more once school lets out! Kevin Rutherford (talk) 18:27, 6 May 2013 (UTC)

I just checked, and the above link was taken from [http:// bit.ly/ 128Jvm7 here] (I had to break up the link because it is blacklisted (same with bit.ly, incidentally)), so we might run into that issue at a CCI if you think it warrants further investigation. Kevin Rutherford (talk) 4:27 pm, Today (UTC−4)
I'll take a look (toolserver not working for me right now, so noting to self to look at this a bit later) Wizardman 22:00, 6 May 2013 (UTC)
I deleted the Vietnam WWII article, as it was impossible to save. Found another source it was copying too. After that deletion there are only ~20 articles that have any real prose to look through, and the Vietnam article is one of only two that had significant edits, thankfully. The Sassanid diff was reverted immediately. If you want to open up a request at the cci page then I can get the diffs up. It should be relatively quick since there's only one significant diff outside of the two you noted. Wizardman 00:08, 7 May 2013 (UTC)

WikiCup 2013 April newsletter

We are a week into Round 3, but it is off to a flying start, with Republic of Rose Island Sven Manguard (submissions) claiming for the high-importance Portal:Sports and Portal:Geography (which are the first portals ever awarded bonus points in the WikiCup) and Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) claiming for a did you know of sea, the highest scoring individual did you know article ever submitted for the WikiCup. Round 2 saw very impressive scores at close; first place New South Wales Casliber (submissions) and second place Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) both scored over 1000 points; a feat not seen in Round 2 since 2010. This, in part, has been made possible by the change in the bonus points rules, but is also testament to the quality of the competition this year. Pool C and Pool G were most competitive, with three quarters of participants making it to Round 3, while Pool D was the least, with only the top two scorers making it through. The lowest qualifying score was 123, significantly higher than last year's 65, 2011's 41 or even 2010's 100.

The next issue of The Signpost is due to include a brief update on the current WikiCup, comparing it to previous years' competitions. This may be of interest to current WikiCup followers, and may help bring some more new faces into the community. We would also like to note that this round includes an extra competitor to the 32 advertised, who has been added to a random pool. This extra inclusion seems to have been the fairest way to deal with a small mistake made before the beginning of this round, but should not affect the competition in a large way. If you have any questions or concerns about this, please feel free to contact one of the judges.

A rules clarification: content promoted between rounds can be claimed in the round after the break, but not the round before. The case in point is content promoted on 29/30 April, which may be claimed in this round. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Please re-block User:(21sayriuo)?

Hi Wizardman, I noticed you left a user page template at User:(21sayriuo) indicating that that user is a sock, but I saw no evidence for this at SPI. I unblocked the user because the original block reason was inadequate. If you're sure about him being a sock, could you please re-block the user? Thank you! Dcoetzee 23:33, 18 May 2013 (UTC)

Had to head out, so looks like this is overwith. Yeah, it was painfully obvious it was him, he's followed the previous pattern of a myriad of socks, so no question the block was valid. No need to bother with SPI when it's a clear duck. Wizardman 03:37, 19 May 2013 (UTC)

Adminship

You left a message invoiting me to apply to become an ADMIN. I have wondered about this for some time. I have not pursued this hitherto because I am not sure that I could devote enough time to this to make it worthwhile. At one stage, I was quite active in creating and editing articles mainly on hisotrical subjects. In recent times, I have not found the time (or perhaps the will) to be writing articles for WP. I regularly monitor CFD and certain classes of AFD and regularly contrinbute to discussions, but I regard that as a variety of light relief. I might be persuadable to become an ADMIN, but you would need to persuade me. I think you would need to suggest that there was some particular area of work that I could usefully do. Everything Tastes Better with Bacon

Hi there, Wizardman, I hope you're doing well! :)

You previously participated in an FAC for Everything Tastes Better with Bacon.

It's subsequently had additional copy-editing through Guild of Copy Editors and a once-over by FA Writer Tim Riley.

I've nominated it for consideration a 2nd time at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Everything Tastes Better with Bacon/archive2.

Your input would be appreciated, at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Everything Tastes Better with Bacon/archive2.

Thank you for your time, — Cirt (talk) 19:17, 31 May 2013 (UTC)

Hi! Thanks for the congratulations, and the nomination. :) It wasn't as hard as I expected, although there were more (and different) questions than I'd have predicted. I'll probably spend the next few weeks finishing off one of the old CCIs, as this should make it a bit easier, and it will be nice to knock one off the list. - Bilby (talk) 15:48, 2 June 2013 (UTC)

WikiProject Good Articles Recruitment Centre

Hello! Now, some of you might have already received a similar message a little while ago regarding the Recruitment Centre, so if you have, there is no need to read the rest of this. This message is directed to users who have reviewed over 15 Good article nominations and are not part of WikiProject Good articles (the first message I sent out went to only WikiProject members).

So for those who haven't heard about the Recruitment Centre yet, you may be wondering why there is a Good article icon with a bunch of stars around it (to the right). The answer? WikiProject Good articles will be launching a Recruitment Centre very soon! The centre will allow all users to be taught how to review Good article nominations by experts just like you! However, in order for the Recruitment Centre to open in the first place, we need some volunteers:

  • Recruiters: The main task of a recruiter is to teach users that have never reviewed a Good article nomination how to review one. To become a recruiter, all you have to do is meet this criteria. If we don't get at least 5-10 recruiters to start off with (at the time this message was sent out, 2 recruiters have volunteered), the Recruitment Centre will not open. If interested, make sure you meet the criteria, read the process and add your name to the list of recruiters. (One of the great things about being a recruiter is that there is no set requirement of what must be taught and when. Instead, all the content found in the process section is a guideline of the main points that should be addressed during a recruitment session...you can also take an entire different approach if you wish!) If you think you will not have the time to recruit any users at this time but are still interested in becoming a recruiter, you can still add your name to the list of recruiters but just fill in the "Status" parameter with "Not Available".
  • Co-Director: The current Director for the centre is me (Dom497). Another user that would be willing to help with some of the tasks would be helpful. Tasks include making sure recruiters are doing what they should be (teaching!), making sure all recruitments are archived correctly, updating pages as needed, answering any questions, and distributing the feedback form. If interested, please contact me (Dom497).
  • Nominators, please read this: If you are not interested in becoming a recruiter, you can still help. In some cases a nominator may have an issue with an "inexperienced" editor (the recruitee) reviewing one of their nominations. To minimize the chances of this happening, if you are fine with a recruitee reviewing one of your nominations under the supervision of the recruiter, please add your name to the list at the bottom of this page. By adding your name to this list, chances are that your nomination will be reviewed more quickly as the recruitee will be asked to choose a nomination from the list of nominators that are OK with them reviewing the article.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me. I look forward to seeing this program bring new reviewers to the Good article community and all the positive things it will bring along.

A message will be sent out to all recruiters regarding the date when the Recruitment Centre will open when it is determined. The message will also contain some further details to clarify things that may be a bit confusing.--Dom497 (talk)

WikiProject Good Articles Recruitment Centre Opens June 19

Hello again! Now that we have enough recruiters (for now) to launch the Recruitment Centre, the opening date for the centre is set for Wednesday June 19, 2013.

To help "expose" the Recruitment Centre, ideas on how to promote it will be helpful. I have already requested two promotional ideas: A quick mention in next weeks Signpost, and a possible mention on everyone's watchlist. Also, spreading the "news" from 'Word of mouth' will probably come in handy as we can spread inform WikiProjects/users to inform them about the centre. Any other ideas should be mentioned on one of the talk pages at the Recruitment Centre or on my talk page.

Just to clarify some things before we begin recruiting:

  • When getting your recruitee to review a nomination, do not let them reviewer one of your nominations (if you have any).
  • Step 3 in the "The Process" section at Recruiter Central is only a guide. You can take a completely different approach if you want as long as you cover the same material; however, steps 1,2, and 4 a/b must be followed.
  • Don't force your recruitee into reviewing one of the nominations from nominators in the "Nominators That Are OK With A Recruitee Reviewing" list. If they want to review a different nomination, there's nothing to worry about, just let them. :)

That's pretty much it for now.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.--Dom497 (talk) 00:36, 11 June 2013 (UTC)

Blue Django - musician/band

Greetings Wizardman

I'm one of those who posted up to an existing page, after following certain Wiki instruction regarding how best to get in line to be edited. Either I misunderstood the process, or didn't read it carefully enough but I'd like to present my details to those editors who do this. The way I think I understand this, is that certain users actually created the trail of misinformation which led to the creation of the erroneous page/s. [1] Is that correct? If not and there is an actual place to post ones details for potential editing, could you please let me know when you have a free moment. No big rush here, please take your time. I'm pretty new to the code system, and am sure that a lot of what I've done here and elsewhere is probably terrible. Due to a personal emergency, I've opened the Recruitment Centre a bit early. There are currently 3 users that would like to learn how to review nominations who can be found here. Debate in need of settling

Hello, I am attempting to make changes to the article "Kyoryugers" regarding translation of a japanese word via the talk page, but am being opposed by user Ryulong, who I believe will most likely revert any attempts made to change the articles in the way I would like to. I have given logical arguments to make these, as they would improve the article, which have been rebutted by said user with weak arguments that what is there works. Ryulong has no administrative powers, and I believe he is hindering the improvement of the article for the sake of his own opinion, as this user has a history of reverting changes to articles that he has edited. therefore, I request that you please view this page(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Kyoryugers) and settle the matter of whether or not the proposed changes should be made.-Torahu (talk) 23:49, 22 June 2013 (UTC)

Champions Day re-assessments

Hey, first thanks for doing the re-assessments of Champions Day. Second, a question for you: Why the C-rating? I've done a lot of minor edits for articles, but Champions Day is easily my biggest contribution. I've written by far the majority of the article. So as I'm a relative newbie on writing Wiki articles, I'm looking for what I can do to improve the my efforts. I understand that much of this is a subjective thing and there probably aren't too many specific things that you can point at, but if you can pass along some general tips that would be great. Thanks! Re: Re: Bearkats baseball

I just wanted to stop by and thank you for pointing me in the right direction regarding what I should add to the SHSU baseball team. I've begun to team up with the University Archives so I now have much more resources at my disposal. Sam Houston State is a pretty small school, and record keeping (stats after '49 are there, but articles regarding the details events are missing) prior to the 80s was suspect at best. Still, more time spent in the archives room should help me in my quest to at least make this article a B. Thanks again! You've been a great help. :) AnthonyE (talk) 23:58, 30 June 2013 (UTC)

WikiCup 2013 June newsletter

We are down to our final 16: the 2013 semi-finals are upon us. A score of 321 was required to survive round 3, further cementing this as the most competitive WikiCup yet; round 3 was survived in 2012 with 243 points, in 2011 with 76 points and in 2010 with 250 points. The change may in part be to do with the fact that more articles are now awarded bonus points, in addition to more competitive play. Reaching the final has, in the past, required 573 points (2012, a 135% increase on the score needed to reach round 4), 150 points (2011, a 97% increase) and 417 points (2010, a 72% increase). This round has seen over a third of participants claiming points for featured articles (with seven users claiming for multiple featured articles) and most users have also gained bonus points. However, the majority of points continue to come from good articles, followed by did you know articles. In this round, every content type was utilised by at least one user, proving that the WikiCup brings together content contributors from all corners of the project.

Round 3 saw a number of contributions of note. Idaho Figureskatingfan (submissions) claimed the first featured topic points in this year's competition for her excellent work on topics related to Maya Angelou, the noted American author and poet. We have also continued to see high-importance articles improved as part of the competition: Wyoming Ealdgyth (submissions) was awarded a thoroughly well-earned 560 points for her featured article Middle Ages and 102 points for her good article Battle of Hastings. Good articles James Chadwick and Stanislaw Ulam netted Australia Hawkeye7 (submissions) 102 and 72 points respectively, while 72 points were awarded to Poland Piotrus (submissions) for each of Władysław Sikorski and Emilia Plater, both recently promoted to good article status. Collaborative efforts between WikiCup participants have continued, with, for example, New South Wales Casliber (submissions) and Canada Sasata (submissions) being awarded 180 points each for their featured article on Boletus luridus.

A rules reminder: content promoted between rounds can be claimed in the round after the break, but not the round before. The case in point is content promoted on the 29/30 June, which may be claimed in this round. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. We are currently seeing concern about the amount of time people have to wait for reviews, especially at GAC- if you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to reduce the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! GA review

Hi. I have nominated Majura Parkway for GA. I tried to address all the feedback in the failed review at Talk:Majura Parkway/GA1, and double checked to make sure it complied with GA criteria. As I'm a still learning contributor as far as GAs go, and I know you have a lot of experience with GAs/FACs. I was wondering if you could review Majura Parkway. (I have also asked User:TonyTheTiger, User:Nick-D and User:Hawkeye7 if they could review.) I would like to improve my ability to get through GA faster, increase my understanding of the GA criteria, and would appreciate a comprehensive review. -- Nbound (talk) 11:17, 1 July 2013 (UTC)

You certainly deserve one of these yourself for all the work you put in on the Darius Dhlomo CCI. Well done. Hut 8.5 20:19, 30 June 2013 (UTC)
I concur - you've definitely earnt this! Lee∴V 22:43, 3 July 2013 (UTC)

Hi. Just curious as to why you removed the 'review pending' tag from this article. I was communicating with the article's creator and was waiting for him/her to make some of the changes I requested. Regards Taroaldo 21:59, 1 July 2013 (UTC)

CCI stuff

Are there any CCI's that you need immediate help with for images, as I can help with that. I have a list of ones I could tackle, but I figured I'd as before I went ahead and started working. Thanks! Kevin Rutherford (talk) 18:42, 8 July 2013 (UTC)

Stanley Miarka, Frank Dyall, and Al Dubetts

I've been away from Wikipedia for a few days and noticed that on July 1, the articles Stanley Miarka, Frank Dyall, and Al Dubetts were speedy deleted with a notation that no sources exist. Each of these men, however, has an entry appearing in James Riley's Biographical Encyclopedia of the Negro Baseball Leagues. Although they apparently played in the Negro leagues briefly, and perhaps as a publicity stunt, I think we have generally retained articles for persons who have been verified to have played in the Negro leagues. At a minimum, if these articles are to be deleted, I'd like to see them go through an AfD discussion to get community discussion of the standards that are being applied. Would it be possible to restore the articles and, if necessary, take them to AfD? BRMo (talk) 05:22, 8 July 2013 (UTC)

Similarly, I don't see how Tyler Minges is an A7 candidate. The article has been here for 7 years without even an AfD. We have thousands of minor league baseball player articles so I don't see how it hasn't asserted notability. —Xezbeth (talk) 06:23, 8 July 2013 (UTC)
With a Google Books search[4], I found a couple of other sources, in addition to Riley, that talk about Stanley Miarka. In the case of Frank [Dyall/Dyll], it appears that Riley may have misspelled his name, because quite a few sources show Frank Dyll, but only Riley shows him as Frank Dyall [5]. (If the article is is restored, I suggest a move and redirect to Frank Dyll, since Riley does list his name as Dyall.) I couldn't find anything yet on Dubetts other than the entry in Riley, but this evening I'll try checking some other sources. BRMo (talk) 16:43, 8 July 2013 (UTC) Also, these players wouldn't show up in the Negro League data at baseball-reference.com, because they played in 1950 and the bb-ref data only go through 1948 (I believe). BRMo (talk) 18:16, 8 July 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for restoring the Miarka and Dyll articles. I've looked some more for Dubetts, and the only thing I can find continues to be the entry in Riley's Biographical Encyclopedia. Riley says that Dubetts was from Havana, Illinois and "was one of three white players (along with Louis Clarizio and Louis Chirban) signed by manager 'Double Duty' Radcliffe for the Chicago American Giants in late June 1950. However, his skills were limited and his stay with the team was very brief." So far, that's all I can find on Dubetts. BRMo (talk) 03:24, 9 July 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for looking into that. Not sure if Dubetts is worth the article in that case, what's being found doesn't really seem worth it. Wizardman 14:33, 9 July 2013 (UTC)
I'm ok with that. I'll let you know if I find anything else. BRMo (talk) 02:20, 10 July 2013 (UTC)

Hello Administrator Wizardman,

I received a couple of complaints over IRC on the following user that you blocked: 108.173.0.144. I have added this to make it clearer that he has been blocked, if you don't mind. Just wanted to inform you. --JustBerry (talk) 22:00, 8 July 2013 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for July 11

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Dave Shipanoff, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Jose Escobar (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.
