Image copyright problem with Image:Petchmitr.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Petchmitr.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

Sinn Sisamouth

"Sawat di, khrap!" Or should I say "Chumreap suor!"? Good rewrite. As you can see by my list of "things to do" on my User Page, I have been intending to rewrite this article for a while now but never got around to it. I could not have done better. Likewise with the Ros Sereysothea article. I do have an extensive collection of songs but the list would get rather long if I added them all. I have added many of the most famous ones. New Page on the Nation Multimedia Group

Someone started an entry on The Nation Group yesterday and it's now featured on today's Main Page in connection to the KCL controversy about printing Sondhi's remarks about the King. Anyways, it looks like the page could use a lot of work - I havn't seen you contrbitute to it yet, but given your background, I was hoping you could help! Considering it's featured on the main page, it could definitely use some expansion ASAP. I've made a couple of changes (and suggestions) already, but I've gotta run now. The Adventure of Sudsakorn or "Sud Sakorn"?

As you are the creator of the Payut Ngaokrachang article, I want to ask you your views - which one is the more correct title, and why are there two different versions in the first place? The former seems to be more widely used (if a google search is any indication), but you used the latter in your article - is there a reason for this? I don't speak Thai myself, so I wouldn't know. Also, it would be very helpful if you could fill in the Thai name of the film in my article (well, it's really more your article than mine, if truth be told ;). Esn 02:50, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

Sorry, I'd just like to ask you one more thing - does this look like it could be a DVD of the abovementioned film or is it something else entirely (such as a computer game or tv show based on it)? Happy to help. It means "delete," and, no, I can't explain the "b." Go here [1]. You put db in {{}} and give a reason after a |. Then the admin knows you made an error and will delete your category. You can also use this on other people's categories, but only if you're really sure there can be no objection. Anyway, I've probably done this 100 times, about 99 of them because I screwed up. On the "Crown Princess" title

I didn't mean to lump you into a badly generalized cluster of "English-language press" when I said that people were mislabelling Princess Sirindhorn as a Crown Princess. Its just that the Wikipedia article on her calls her by that title, and google searches for ("Crown Princess" Sirindhorn) reveal over a thousand references. So even if it is wrong, it seems to be a common misconception. Thanks for righting it in the article. Patiwat 05:20, 14 June 2006 (UTC)

One would have to say that if "Crown Princess Sirindhorn" gets over 1000 hits then that is the established English usage and that has to be recognised even if it is wrong in Thai. Adam 13:15, 14 June 2006 (UTC)

Pedicab/Cycle rickshaw

Hi; I'm sure you saw my edits and comments on Cycle rickshaw and I hope you enjoy my bio stuff on Talk:Cycle rickshaw; which can be deleted later as un-encyclopedic but it was meant as a commentary on the SD stuff as well as on riding/social conditions in Asia. I have to go out right now but I'll improve the English in the San Diego section and try and condense it some later tonight or tomorrow; don't know who these guys are but I understand why they wrote it; as in my own comments on the talk page it's actually fairly POV, just overdone. I'm leaving this message, however, to let you know I'll try and get pix and specs of the big heavy-duty bikes used by www.kabukikabs.com (I'm friends with the owner) and see if I can scare up any pictures of the Expo fleet, which at the time was North America's biggest. I don't know about the SD claim that there are "hundreds" in that city; there's not enough room; we had sixty and that's in a bigger downtown than SD's; hundreds of riders maybe; I think there were hundreds in Waikiki/Honolulu but I never worked over there; they got shut down for being involved in drug-dealing and prostitution.Skookum1 21:59, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

Thx for the reply; which part of BKK are you in anyway? I miss the place, hot and smelly though it is. I always stayed in the Tower Inn on Silom, often eating at the open-air seafood joints around there. If you happen to be on the street opposite the Hindu Temple, there's a portly (well, OK, really fat) Chinese-Thai lady about the third or fourth stall on the right who makes incredible oyster omelettes where I always used to eat; tell her the big blond farang from Canada who used to eat there whenever he was in town 1996-2001 says hi and hopes all her kids are doing good. How much does a pedicabber make daily down there anyway? Not that my body can handle it; just curious. Pondering living in Pattaya for part of the winter, too...(into weight-training/bodybuilding, and that's sorta "muscle beach" for Asia); probably nicer in Koh Samui but I gotta have a good gym (and pharmacy)Skookum1 22:27, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

Loso/Sek Loso

My opinion would be merging Sek Loso into Loso article. Much of story about Loso involves around Sek. Also Loso bass guitarist (Apirat) already left Farenheit and seen playing for Sek in some concerts. The "Pantip" song refers to Pantip Plaza. The song talks about him dating a girl, going to shopping centers, World Trade Center (now Central World Plaza), MBK, Siam Square - any place but Pantip Plaza because he doesn't want to see music piracy.

Been watching the news...

I know the general public usually isn't "in the way" in these things down there, so I assume you're safe; just thinking in your direction. We'd been considering a trip there sometime this winter; I doubt the military government would try to restrict tourism anyway, if it lasts, but we may not have the dough anyway. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. For the record, I really like the image. It's one of the most fun, quirky and idiosyncratic promotional photos I've ever seen. It's sublime. But it's also a copyrighted image, and we can't stretch our policies to include a particular fair use image based on a rationale that can be summed up as "we really like the image". Unfortunately, making it smaller or cropping it will not change the fact that it is a copyrighted image that is used purely to identify a living person and could in theory be substituted with any number of free use images. Sorry, I can't see any way of helping you in the manner that you have asked me to help you, and it is a shame. Rossrs 10:16, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
OK, I understand you feel strongly about the image, so here's an idea. This is the only way that I think you might achieve your aim, but to be honest I think it's a bit shaky. Firstly, you will need to draft a fair use rationale and place this on the image description page. Secondly you need to ensure that the article contains discussion that can be best illustrated by this image at least, and can be only illustrated by this image, at most (that's where you need to aim). Using it just to illustrate Westwood will not work. Discussing the importance of the event and the reason for the particular image is the only thing that could possible make the image unrepeatable IMO. Piping Thai names

_ _ Thanks, and sorry if my terseness seemed dismissive or otherwise rude.
_ _ I think it's important for me to distinguish between the facts of Thai practice with names (your account of which i didn't mean to question) and the question of what WP should do with Thai names in (at least) these situations, which are potentially all different:

  • piping Cats
  • titling bio articles
  • LoPbN entries (where, in my incessantly expressed and acted-upon opinion, it's a good thing to have multiple entries to assist people who are following conventions that are not the most common -- because either the most common convention is wrong, or it's correct but ignorance of it is widespread)
  • subsequent references (in articles of all kinds).

Let me clarify & discuss for a moment the subsequent-reference case (tho IMO it's not controversial in this case, it illustrates some principles):

_ _ With names of Americans, Britons, Canadians, and Anzacs, of European ethnic background, who are known predominantly by the given and sur-names they were born with, we have a clear policy (probably without exceptions other than where there's no issue of confusing them with someone who's also mentioned in the article and shares the surname) for what happens after using, once, a "full" form of their name (e.g., John Kennedy, John F. Kennedy, or John Fitzgerald Kennedy): we then refer to them using "he", "she", or just their surname. (I'm vague abt the New York Times' current standard; i can recall the time when they went from using titles in all subsequent refs -- Mr. Wales, Dr. Kissinger, Pres. Lincoln -- to denying organized crime figures any title, e.g. (hypothetically) "...but District Attorney Morgenthau said that Gotti's claims were a bluff...". Or maybe those who were testifying against the mob started getting "Mr." when their deal was announced.)
_ _ Thus many fan-written articles, that imitate press releases and fan behavior by calling the subject by first name or even nickname, need correction. (When i'm in the right mood, i've summarized "not your buddy" when fixing them.) Your answers satisfy me that that error is not involved (as i speculated in the back of my mind; it's not usually a high priority for me) in the subsequent references to "Petchara" in Petchara Chaowarat: IMO that is probably correct -- tho on that assumption, i'd rather have the second reference read something like
Petchara (referring to her by that given name is Thai custom, since a Thai second name -- "Chaowarat", in her case -- is not, in contrast to European and East-Asian surnames, used without the corresponding given name)
probably with a lk to our best treatment of Thai naming (perhaps a section of a reorganized Family name, or of an article (to be lk'd from that one) about alternatives to family names?)

My point is that different situations deserve different answers to the question "which name or names, in which order?". A crucial factor for titles is that Rdrs can supplement the title, and within articles, that there's room for nuancing language such as i suggest just above; IMO the LoPbN answer is "the full name, and in all orders likely to be tried by users". A Sandbox experiment suggests that all but the last tag for a given Cat are ignored, so (for now, and there are arguments against changing that) the answer for Cats has to include "only one order", and IMO that one has to be the one most often used by our (English-speaking, including ESL) users. IMO the main question is whether the answer is the same for, e.g., Thai actors whose films are released

only in Thai,
also with English subtitles, and
also dubbed into English.

It's quite plausible to argue that bios for at least the first group will be very seldom sought by users who won't anticipate using Thai naming conventions for alphabetizing.
