Antoine Hamilton

Dear Wikipedialuva. You recently did a "cleanup" on the article Antoine Hamilton. You seem to have been using AWB applying General Fixes (Genfixes). You are a very experienced Wikipedian. You surely know WP:AWBRULES, which prescribes that your AWB edits should be of the same quality as manual ones. Genfixes removed spaces between text and comments in 36 occasions. Do you think these are good edits? Would you have done them manually? Did you supervise what Gensec did? Best regards, Johannes Schade (talk) 19:09, 23 August 2023 (UTC)

@Johannes Schade: Hi Johannes Schade! I did edit the article with "Antoine Hamilton" and use AWB with genfixes enabled to make changes to the article, and I have read the WP:AWBRULES. To answer your questions:
1. "Genfixes removed spaces between text and comments in 36 occasions. Do you think these are good edits?"
Removing space between article text and hidden comments does not seem to be addressed or mentioned in the relevant MOS policies that address hidden comments (MOS:COMMENT and WP:HIDDEN), but perhaps there is a policy that I am unaware of that addresses this topic.
2. "Would you have done them manually?"
Assuming that there are no policies that address a topic on spacing, if I notice it, I generally remove the spacing in the unseen markup articles when manually editing. I try to avoid removing spacing if the only changes I am making to the spacing would have "no noticeable effect on the rendered page" per rule 4 of AWB and have enabled my skip options in AWB so it should not flag articles where these are the only changes. However, in this case, there were other changes that did affect the page rendering (which I will address).
3. "Did you supervise what Gensec did?"
Yes, and I take responsibility for the edits I approve with AWB.
After reviewing the edit, I did notice that AWB did suggest making a mistake in this edit, which I approved. The Harvnb reference template uses "p=" for a single page, and "pp=" for multiple pages. The AWB saw commas in the page number area and assumed, incorrectly, that there were multiple pages instead of descriptions of the location on the page and changed "p" to "pp". I should have caught this, and I want to thank you for bringing this edit to my attention. Had I noticed that AWB was making these errors, I would have rejected them; the spacing would have been irrelevant, as making an edit based on spacing that does not ultimately affect rendering alone would have been an "insignificant edit". Thanks! Wikipedialuva (talk) 22:58, 23 August 2023 (UTC)
Dear Wikipedialuva, thanks for your kind reply. Please excuse the somewhat rough style of my note above, I am getting tired of telling people that they should not remove spaces between text and comment that I add for better readabilty of the code. – Changing subject I have difficulties to understand what you mean under "2." above when you say "I generally remove the spacing in the unseen markup articles when manually editing." Do you mean "unseen markup of articles"? Surely not all spaces, like:
<!-- Referenced by the infobox issue-link --> to <!--Referencedbytheinfoboxissue-link--> ::or ::{{Cite book|last=Artz |first=Frederick Binkerd |date=1934 |title=Reaction and Revolution 1814–1832 |publisher=[[HarperCollins|Harper & Row]] |location=New York |oclc=883674335 |url=https://archive.org/details/in.ernet.dli.2015.499217/}} ::to {{Citebook|last=Artz|first=FrederickBinkerd|date=1934|title=ReactionandRevolution1814–1832|publisher[[HarperCollins|Harper&Row]]|location=NewYork|oclc=883674335|url=https://archive.org/details/in.ernet.dli.2015.499217/}}
I think we are discussing here only spaces at the contact between text and HTML comments. Why would you delete those manually? As you say, MOS is silent on the matter. I would not think removing such spaces is an improvement. That is why I say it should not be done, neither manually not using Gensec. With thanks and best regards, Johannes Schade (talk) 16:59, 24 August 2023 (UTC)
@Johannes Schade: Hi! Yes, I did mean "unseen markup of articles". To be honest, I often adjust the spacing on a situation-by-situation basis. For the example of the citation, I do add spacing like you showed in your example. I do this because the citation maker built into Wikipedia uses this spacing, and it's also one that I see the most often. I figure that if the built-in citation maker uses it, it is probably the preferred way to format a citation. With that being said, I do see plenty of times where people format their references with much less spacing, like in the other example you gave. I have also seen times where more (and, in my personal opinion, unnecessary) spaces are added to references, like those created by Toolforge's Citer. When I use Citer, I will usually try to remove the excess spacing in its format more closely to the spacing that the Wikipedia built-in citation maker uses.
"I think we are discussing here only spaces at the contact between text and HTML comments. Why would you delete those manually?"
In the case above, the edit was suggested by AWB, which, from my experience, generally formats to the most accepted or common format. I generally accept these formatting edits, assuming allowing the edit would follow AWB rules (for example, the edit would not be an "insignificant edit"), unless I am aware of a rule or policy that would contradict the change. Spacing issues with hidden text is a policy I'm honestly not super passionate about either way, and I have absolutely no objections if a policy is made regarding this or if AWB rules are changed not to suggest this. Most AWB editors will keep accepting these edits, though, unless there is a policy update and/or AWB rule change to not suggest them. So if this topic is something you are passionate about, I would suggest discussing changing it on the relevant talkpages. Thanks! Wikipedialuva (talk) 22:39, 26 August 2023 (UTC)

It's fine, far from the first time that has happened to me. Having said that, I should be keeping score ;). Cheers, 47.227.95.73 (talk) 23:52, 28 August 2023 (UTC)
