U.S. Senate election in NY 1964

In a general way, you are absolutely right. The more recent election campaigns have got much more media coverage, there is more info available, and maybe the senators were elected considering nationwide issue. I do not intend to move the articles that exist from 1980 on. They will be linked as "main articles" in the summary, like the Comptroller elections, and the AG elections...

But you are wrong about a few things: The U.S. Senator is elected on the state ticket, he is a state officer who represents the state in Congress. He was considered to "head the ticket" together with the governor in the old days (after 1914). Besides, the senators were elected until the 1960s at least, strictly on the same state-politics issues, as part of the ticket.

Besides, this article about the 1964 election had factually wrong info, which I cleaned up. A simple restoration of the article would just duplicate the info, but I'm not opposed to it as a matter of principle. Besides, the template "U.S. Senate elections in NY" has wrong years, has only red links, and has a totally wrong approach to the thing. I'm in the middle of a general clean-up of the electoral history of New York state, sooner or later I will sort this out too.

That there are articles about Senate elections in other states that follow a different pattern, is part of WP. Every project follows its own guidelines, it is IMPOSSIBLE to have everything done in the same way. But, please do not worry, the FORM is not that important, raelly important is the INFO. Kraxler (talk) 15:03, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

I agree that U.S. Senate elections have some relationship to state politics, but if I recall correctly by the time of people like Jacob Javits and (in NJ) Clifford Case they could be largely following their own path. Another thing I don't understand is why you cover U.S. Senate elections (federal but statewide) and state senate/assembly elections (state but not statewide districts) but not U.S. House elections. People often talk about the composition of a Congressional delegations from a state over time, and redistricting (which you do cover) is a definite factor here.
In any case, if you're not subsuming the large Senate articles, then my main concern is addressed. If I ever decide to write further on the 1964 election, I can split it out at that time. Wasted Time R (talk) 01:45, 5 August 2009 (UTC)
If anybody wants to write a good article with detailed info on any past NY senate election, that's ok with me, just put a "main article" link in the state election article. This one in question (1964) was really bad (it had a "primary election" table, but the nominations were made by state convention, primary elections were re-introduced [after a first try from 1914 to 1920] in 1968, I think). Then some admin could restore the name to the separate article on 1964. In fact, senatorial elections always did have a slightly different note to them, a few times independents have run just for the U.S. Senate (mostly as spoilers) like in 1926.
The state election articles cover the statewide elected officers (all notable), and mentions the occurrence of the districtwide elected legislators (who are mostly not notable), gives general info on the distribution of seats in the State senate and assembly (difficult to find, the Red Book does not state party affiliation, before the ballot reform in the early 1900s party affiliation was not part of the election!), and shows the evolution of the State constitution (amendments have to be ratified by the voters). On the congressional delegations, several different types of articles have been written, many of them very unreliable (dates especially, in articles like "NY's xth congressional district"). You can see articles like "xth United States Congress" for the members, but even there the summary is contradictory. I intend to add some info on the congressmen later, after some more research, and maybe too on presidential electors. The proceedings to select them have changed many times. There have been electors-at-large who should be added to the state tickets maybe. My "NY state election project" is a work in progress and I'm grateful for any suggestions... posting in the talk page

I posted in Sotomayor talk page as suggested. Anyway good job with the Puerto Rican Defense fund, I think you have resuscitated them from the death :) A lot people didn't like the name change, but the barrio change, the immigrants where different, the bodegas change owners and puertoricans migrated out of New York, but I think maybe there a one or two young Sotomayor outhere, but the others just decided to find a job at Wall Street and act white. --J.Mundo (talk) 05:29, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

ANI

William S. Saturn has mentioned you in this ANI thread. UnitAnode 01:17, 7 August 2009 (UTC)

Not that it matters now, but I was sort of misquoted there:

"I know in the past month, Ferrylodge decided to disappear from the project. And two great editors that could add significantly to the articles: Happyme22 and Wasted Time R, refuse to even look at the pages because of the "protectors." This is a serious concern for wikipedia that needs to be addressed. We can't have a band of editors running others from the project and disregarding NPOV. --William S. Saturn (talk) 01:16, 7 August 2009 (UTC)"

The reason I stay away from the Obama pages is not "the protectors", but because there are so many editors there and so many conflicts that the probability that any work I did would stay in the articles is not that high, and because to get anything into the articles you have to spend ten times the effort on the talk pages before, during, and after. It's just not worth it. And for the record, Ferrylodge quit because of a tangle he got caught up in on the Clarence Thomas article, not anything Obama-related. I removed the lead-in because the section already identifies his unit. Is it necessary to state it again? It just seemed to be awkward and forced, rather than something like, "While deployed, Biden received a visit..." Atlantabravz (talk) 14:37, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

Chappaquddick and consecutive citations

In that case, I'd remove the unsourced material, move it to the Talk Page and request sourcing for it, or put a citation tag on it. There was no citation tag in that section indicating that any portion of it was unsourced, so there was no indication by me that any portion of it wasn't covered in that one cited source. But if there is, feel free to place a tag on that portion. Thanks. Nightscream (talk) 04:28, 29 August 2009 (UTC)

Hello. Just wanted to let you know that in response to your protection request I have extended the semi-protection on the Ted Kennedy article by another seven days. Hi, Saw your note about the Kara Kennedy Allen speedy delete. I left a couple of messages for admins asking that the article be brought back so a regular delete can be discussed. I see no reason why a Speedy Delete would be considered for this case. You mentioned a procedure for appeal. Can you help with this? I'm not familiar with the process. thanks. --Crunch (talk) 00:03, 2 September 2009 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for File:TheGants.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:TheGants.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Gateway Protection Programme

Hi. Thanks for the GA review of Gateway Protection Programme. I'll try to work on the article when I get the time, in reponse to your comments. Just a quick point now though. You mentioned the lack of a full stop at the end of the Hansard citation. This is indeed a feature of the citation template, and I've previously pointed this out on its talk page. I don't suppose you know how to amend the template to include a full stop? Cordless Larry (talk) 14:58, 13 September 2009 (UTC)

I think maybe the template is done intentionally this way, to allow its use inline in text where a full stop would not be appropriate. So what you can do is add the full stop after the template use in the footnote, e.g. <ref>{{cite hansard blah blah}}.</ref> Wasted Time R (talk) 15:56, 13 September 2009 (UTC)
OK, will do. Thanks for the tip. Cordless Larry (talk) 17:23, 13 September 2009 (UTC)

acess dates

Hello, in May 2008 you initiated a long discussion here about whether or not there was a need for accessdate to be included in references. After many months a sort of compromise was reached that in news citations and journal citations, the access date, if included, should be commented out, so as to be visible only to editors and not to casual readers.

For many months that compromise held, but now people are trying to overturn it. It would be very good if you could come back and emphasise the point again at Wikipedia_talk:Citing_sources#Retrieval_dates:_redundant_for_sources_with_official_publication_dates.3F. Thanks, Alarics (talk) 22:29, 14 September 2009 (UTC)

U2 album cats...

I don't think it over-categorises. If you do, perhaps you would be good enough to explain how, and maybe with reference to WP:OVERCAT. Personally, I think all the nav boxes, and info box tracklistings are overdoing things. Cat's are out of the way, and more functional/structural rather than aesthetic gimmicktry with template overkill. The cat Category:U2_albums shows there is plenty that could be categorised. Anyway, I will continue to finish the current category, and see how it is received. --Merbabu (talk) 03:05, 26 September 2009 (UTC)

It's very disappointing that you didn't discuss further before nominating for deletion as I requested. What's the rush? I said I would wait. Surely you can go about things in a more cooperative way - who knows, you may have convinced me rather than rushed to dig the metaphoric trenches. --Merbabu (talk) 03:25, 26 September 2009 (UTC)

Adopting this scheme will be a huge change. I want the community to decide it, not you, not me. If you win the discussion, fine and no hard feelings. But I felt this should be brought forward right away, it's that major. And I want it to happen before you, or someone who sees what you did and starts imitating it with other albums and artists, spends a lot of effort that ends up getting lost (if the decision goes that way). Wasted Time R (talk) 03:28, 26 September 2009 (UTC)

I guess I don't yet understand why or how you think it is over categorisation. If it is on the other hand good categorisation, what is wrong with creating a (good) precedent - that might be implemented by others (not me!) on a case by case basis as appropriate? --Merbabu (talk) 04:09, 26 September 2009 (UTC)

But per your desires, I've started a straw poll. Wasted Time R (talk) 00:12, 8 October 2009 (UTC)
If that's true then there should be no problem in determining consensus. I do however suggest we look at the bigger picture here. It really doesn't matter to our readers that John Doe and Group X endorse or oppose because we are an encyclopedia and not a newspaper. We report dispassionately that Jennings was appointed but the appointment was protested in some way and why. For NPOV we add that he also had support. I can't remember which other BLP it was but we had a similar situation of a lengthy WP:Coatrack of all the groups who opposed or supported the actions - they were all removed for a more generalized and neutral statement. A year from now we really won't care that much. That's the recentism effect - those calling for his firing will move onto their next target and the one after that. This, in part, is why we shouldn't even bother with partisan sources including op ed pieces. They're just not credit and have a skewed perception based on a POV agenda. For our purposes we look to the most reliable sources and follow their lead. If they think this is a really big deal and the story has a lot of traction then they will start running a lot of stories on it. In general the media makes money by stirring drama - we don't do either. -- Banjeboi 00:17, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

While McGovern may very well have characterized Theodore Roosevelt as a "conservative Republican" in a CBC interview, he apparently wasn't then (or maybe now) a student of TR. All of the major biographers of TR (from Edmund Morris to H.W. Brands & Nathan Miller to name but a few) describe him as a progressive. In fact, in his day he was (except on a few issues like defense) quite out of step with the rest of his party. Even Wikipedia's own page on TR uses the descriptive term progressive 25 times versus 3 uses of conservative (which weren't used to describe him). My suggestion is that this sentence about his parent's views be removed or given additional context. Thanks. SBmeier (talk) 04:11, 16 February 2010 (UTC)SBmeier

Re: Good work on U2 song articles

Hahah, cheers, and sorry to keep you waiting on those last two. I am actually working on them in my sandbox, so feel free to join in there. I've been working on all of the articles in there so that I can be sure that when I put them out they won't be nominated for deletion through WP:NSONGS (it says that articles are fine if there is substantial development included). I kind of see "White as Snow (song)" as the benchmark for each one to meet before it gets put out, so I think that already "Moment of Surrender" will be good to go once the information is all organized. Not quite sure about "Cedars of Lebanon" yet, but I think it will make it at about the same level as "White as Snow". MelicansMatkin (talk, contributions) 01:12, 25 October 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, I know what you mean; truth be told, I purposely left "Moment of Surrender" until last because I was sure that it was one of the few non-singles that would be able to get an article without much trouble, which is why I worked on articles like "Fez", "Unknown Caller", and "Stand Up Comedy" first. Actually, I'm very pleasantly surprised by the "Stand Up Comedy" article; I think it may be the strongest song article of any from the album, though it's Composition section is admittedly lacking right now.
If you like, I might be able to help you with the "Running to Stand Still" article in regards to offline sources. I've got a couple of things that might have some useful information; "Into the Heart - The Story Behind Every Song" and "Uncut's The Ultimate Music Guide: U2" among them. I can hunt through those later and try to find some stuff if you like. MelicansMatkin (talk, contributions) 01:31, 25 October 2009 (UTC)

Bono's disappointment

Hey, thanks for adding in that information about Bono's disappointment with the sales. I'd been trying to figure out how to work it in smoothly, and you did a perfect job; thanks!

Thanks. It should maybe be expanded to cover relative sales versus the two prior albums worldwide, if known, and not just the UK. Also maybe some note re how album sales in general have declined during this period (although that hasn't stopped Taylor Swift).

PS, I'm guesisng you watched the YouTube broadcast? What did you think of it? MelicansMatkin (talk, contributions) 16:19, 27 October 2009 (UTC)

I stayed up to the "Unforgettable Fire"/"City of Blinding Lights" sequence, haven't gone back to see the rest. I guess it was okay for this sort of thing, periodically cutting away to give the long view, but as a genre I don't find concert videos very artistic. The stream quality was better than I expected though. Wasted Time R (talk) 00:58, 28 October 2009 (UTC)
Well, I've got first-week sales relative to How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb for the US in the Reception section, but haven't found any information on other countries or albums (though I seem to recall somewhere that it was about 60,000+ more than ATYCLB in the US). I thought about adding the theories on declining sales, but figured it might sound a bit like I'm making an excuse for the band =P. As for the concert, if you're interested in just the audio, U2start has an amazing quality rip up that you can get. MelicansMatkin (talk, contributions) 01:43, 28 October 2009 (UTC)

Re: U2 sources

I don't have the latter, unfortunately. I'll see what I can add from the Uncut guide that isn't already mentioned. I'm not really sure what could be counted as really definitive, but Musicnotes might be an acceptable source for the keys and chord sequences. I know Suede67 used it for the "Stand Up Comedy" article. MelicansMatkin (talk, contributions) 03:31, 4 November 2009 (UTC)

I've added what little I could from the Uncut guide; most of it was already in the article, so it was only a couple of little things that made it in. MelicansMatkin (talk, contributions) 03:53, 4 November 2009 (UTC)

Greetings-- assistance or advice?

Hi WT- been a while. I've pretty much stuck to bottom-level articles, adding photos via Wikimedia Commons to articles when I can.. I do some editing though lately I've been copyediting for style, grammar, etc. some other people's projects. I came to you for advice. The last two articles I've worked on with any real presence are Cat Stevens (still doing alright but barely worthy of GA ranking) and the problem ones, Derek Trucks and The Derek Trucks Band. Remember how I had difficulty separating individual musician's articles from band articles? This is what I'm facing now with these two. Trucks' article has some duplicate information in his Derek Trucks Band article, and I was hoping you might take a look, fiddle (as much as you are willing) and give me a laundry list of stuff I can do to separate the two and improve them. Derek's band's article is straight out a disaster area. But some questions linger:

  1. I have 3 refs mentioning Trucks' change of approach to performing from "guitar albums" relying heavily on his prowess, to more laid back performances and recordings b/c of his confidence after years with his bandmates that they can add enough that it isn't a concern of his. Which article would mention this? Or both, from different approaches?
  2. When should I begin stubs on the musicians in the Derek Trucks Band? I find little (birthdates in particular) but possibly enough though I fear having the start of a stub swiftly deleted.
  3. How can I fix the mess that is the whole article of the Derek Trucks Band?

I really learned a lot from the few things you told me when working on the Dixie Chicks articles, even though I was closed to criticism of any kind, being new then, I found it immensely helpful later, and value your help and input. Please, can you take a look at the two articles? --Leahtwosaints (talk) 00:13, 9 November 2009 (UTC)

Many blessings!

Here's a counter-theory for why it's not "Wasted Time"! We met when I had little true knowledge of how things work here, and made comments that were probably hurtful to you.. yet you have done such a service to me, a couple of years (or more) later, with being the first editor I'd turn to for as an outside eye to help get the Derek Trucks chronology as an individual artist as opposed to The Derek Trucks Band or The Allman Brothers Band (to a lesser degree) back on track! Huge thanks- I suspect my ADD has been a hindrance to me, so that I bounce around between Wikignome stuff, finding photos for biographies, and actually editing articles. Thanks for coming through, and please feel free to look at any of those articles anytime just for the hell of it, since I've been the primary editor for all but the Allman Brothers Band which has sadly been ignored. --Leahtwosaints (talk) 12:08, 15 November 2009 (UTC)

That seems like a very unusual structure, with all those links for the first words of sections (some of which point to parts of the same other article!). Shouldn't we just have one separate link in each section like in other WP articles? KarlFrei (talk) 13:29, 17 November 2009 (UTC)

It was designed that way by User:Ferrylodge and myself (the two main editors on the article) as a way to get more readers to find the subarticles. Biographical subarticles like House and Senate career of John McCain, until 2000 et al suffer from very low readership stats unless you take aggressive measures to make them more visible. Just a quickie-

Hey WT-- I've seen you returned to the scene of the crime (the Derek Trucks article). Just wondering about The Derek Trucks Band page, because like the aforementioned article, it sucked with repetition and problems with chronology. As you know, I'm a WikiGnome first, and an editor second, and still have some difficulty separating the individual's article from the one for the band (in particular, when the individual is either an equal in a trio as with the Dixie Chicks, or is the bandleader of his own band. On my userpage I did start an area to compile articles about the bandmates in the Derek Trucks Band. I found the most about Mike Mattison who is half of a duo called Scrapomatic. Info abounds, yet, I can't seem to find birthdates or places of birth for them. I feel a stub should be started for each, and it's why I focused on finding photos of everyone and some from the Soul Stew Revival with Susan Tedeschi and Ron Holloway (his page is a nightmare, as he continues to try editing it himself, and doesn't seem to comprehend inline citations, even after I had a 1 1/2 hour conversation with him (all the way from France he was so peeved about it.) Question -for example, anyway.. Derek's guitar focus has gone now from "guitar albums" to albums that do not rely as heavily on his expertise as before. There are a couple of references to this, good quotes, although he's maintained that his bandmates in the DTB have been his musical peers in previous interviews. That withstanding, it's true that his most recent songs released, with Already Free, have shown this shift in his music. Would this belong in the musical style area of his page, or in the article about his band? I'm pretty much the person editing both articles, other than User:Suede67 who I recruited last year to help with discography..--Leahtwosaints (talk) 03:08, 20 November 2009 (UTC)

I think the Dixie Chicks case was easier to separate. In the case of Derek Trucks, you have to include the formulation and evolution of DTB in the Trucks article as well as the DTB article, because as you say he is the bandleader. So yes, there will be some duplication. And of course the Trucks article also has to deal with his role in the ABB. To use your specific example, the shift in his music with Already Free needs to be covered in both the Trucks and the DTB article. I've hit this kind of problem myself; I'm the lead editor on the Max Weinberg article, who also is both a member of a famous band and a bandleader in his own right. There's a fair amount of duplication in some areas between the Weinberg article and the Max Weinberg 7 article; that's just the way it is.
Regarding individual articles for the DTB members, you are right that you need to build them up in your own area before putting them into the real place. These are the kind of articles that have to hit the ground running, lest the deletionists jump all over them. Wasted Time R (talk) 04:01, 20 November 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:FrijidPinkHouseOfTheRisingSun.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of "file" pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. File source problem with File:GoodLovin'GratefulDead.jpeg

Thanks for uploading File:GoodLovin'GratefulDead.jpeg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 14:46, 11 December 2009 (UTC). Hello Wasted Time R! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 1 of the articles that you created is tagged as an Unreferenced Biography of a Living Person. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. GA reassessment of Bruce Hornsby

I have conducted a reassessment of the above article as part of the GA Sweeps process. I have found some concerns which you can see at Talk:Bruce Hornsby/GA1. I have placed the article on hold whilst these are fixed. Thanks. Jezhotwells (talk) 19:17, 14 February 2010 (UTC)

Just a quick note re the references - most of the sources for which an online version has been provided don't have a retrival date, which will probably be expected at GA. Cheers, hamiltonstone (talk) 03:14, 18 February 2010 (UTC)

That's intentional, as I don't believe that well-dated newspaper and magazine sources, especially from the 1990s, need retrieval dates. The source is archival and is the paper publication at the time; the URL is just a convenience for those who don't have access to the paper copies. Retrieval dates just add clutter and potentially confuse the reader. I've gotten a good number of articles to GA using this approach. Wasted Time R (talk) 03:23, 18 February 2010 (UTC)
OK. I assumed the retrieval dates were there in part as a response to the transient nature of some sites (ie. when was this reference last available?). But I'm happy with that. Cheers, hamiltonstone (talk) 04:42, 18 February 2010 (UTC)

"City of Blinding Lights"

Hi Wasted Time R, as I'm sure you know "City of Blinding Lights" is currently up for FAC. At the moment it looks as if the article will not pass unless the prose receives a copyedit from somebody with fresh eyes; could I ask you to take some time in the immediate future to give the article a look-over and tighten up the prose? Cheers, MelicansMatkin (talk, contributions) 04:00, 21 February 2010 (UTC)

No, I wasn't aware it was at FAC. But it's a bit ironic that anyone would ask me to copyedit a U2 article ... I can't make a single damn edit to any U2 article without my language getting rewritten or deleted! Check out the recent history of Zoo TV Tour for example. So I'm going to pass on this request. But I'll add some general comments on the FAC page. Wasted Time R (talk) 12:46, 21 February 2010 (UTC)
Eh, well, I always value your feedback and your edits. Thanks for the comments on the FAC page; you pointed out a lot of things I'd either missed or hadn't thought of, so I'll try to address them as best I can (though in some cases, such as the piano notes in live performances, a lack of sources may hinder any alterations). If you do feel like taking a gander on a c/e, please do go ahead; one or two people can't build an article alone. MelicansMatkin (talk, contributions) 20:43, 21 February 2010 (UTC)
Um, I hate to be a bother, but would you be able to revisit the candidacy and see if I'm on the right track in addressing most of your points? Actually, since you're so good at finding sources, when you have the time would you mind doing a search for this? I haven't been able to find much at all, especially in the reception area. MelicansMatkin (talk, contributions) 03:49, 26 February 2010 (UTC)
Sorry dude, I've never heard of it! My knowledge of Passengers begins and ends with "Miss Sarajevo" (and, I guess after seeing it at 360, "Your Blue Room"). You're on your own on that one ... Wasted Time R (talk) 03:53, 26 February 2010 (UTC)
Hahah, okay then; well anyways, give the song a listen; it's actually incredibly beautiful(in my top three with "Ultraviolet" and "City")! MelicansMatkin (talk, contributions) 03:59, 26 February 2010 (UTC)
Hmm. Seems a bit Zooropa-ish to me. I've always been partial to the "Promenade" / "4th of July" era of Eno soundscapes ... Thanks for the pointer. Wasted Time R (talk) 17:09, 27 February 2010 (UTC)

GA reassessment of Natalie Maines

I have conducted a reassessment of the above article as part of the GA Sweeps process. You are being notified as you have made a number of contributions to the article. I have found some concerns which you can see at Talk:Natalie Maines/GA1. I have placed the article on hold whilst these are fixed. Thanks. Jezhotwells (talk) 05:32, 21 February 2010 (UTC)

I think there's a lot more wrong with it than you do, as I've stated at the GAR. Wasted Time R (talk) 15:44, 21 February 2010 (UTC)

AfD nomination of Julia DeMato

An editor has nominated one or more articles which you have created or worked on, for deletion. The nominated article is Julia DeMato. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also Wikipedia:Notability and "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion(s) by adding your comments to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Julia DeMato (3rd nomination). Please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate.

Please note: This is an automatic notification by a bot. I have nothing to do with this article or the deletion nomination, and can't do anything about it. --Erwin85Bot (talk) 01:14, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

Natalie Maines, plus..

Hey WT R: Thanks again for helping with the confusing mess on the Derek Trucks article. I suppose you noticed that Natalie Maines is in danger of losing it's GA-ranking. Also in that group of self-appointed Nazis on the GA review thing is the Cat Stevens/Yusuf Islam piece since he's back performing. I believe you must have met User:Tvoz, who also has worked with me on the Cat Stevens article, and so I'm giving some attention to it, as well. Many criticisms are valid on that one, but if you have time (and interest)- it could use help to keep it's status. Tvoz and I both agree that there aren't too many music clips for such a prolific songwriter, but are looking for help finding additional references for the "Cat Stevens" days, aside from his website, (and the Majicat.com former fansite which originally was a fansite till Stevens bought it outright to eliminate facts or whatever that weren't true. He also added a lot of references- interviews about his early years there, so a trail to specific reliable sources CAN be found- as with Melody Maker, and Rolling Stone. Will you be helping to keep Natalie Maines to GA standing? If so, it seems like only a minor bit of work needed there. Anyway, here are some requests for help (when you have time)..

  1. I desperately need someone to show me how to create album pages properly, from beginning to end. I have no idea where to look for outlines on the album pages and song pages too! If I'm shown once where to find album rankings, lists of songs on an album, etc. there are so many pages needing to be done.
  2. In particular, would you look at Rory Gallagher's article? I began editing it, asking someone for help with the discography, which he started on another page, but how to add sections that include his work with the band Taste, his solo albums, collaborations with notable musicians like B.B. King, and others, studio work, and what I dislike most: posthumous box sets of unused material (that problem exists on the Cat Stevens albums, too)-- so do you have any ideas? This guy has urban myths to spare, though I've removed most (some just need references still... Can you help me? I need to know how to handle Discographies, and setting up articles for albums --plus finding the info for Gallagher, and also Stevens/Yusuf, and if I can learn it once it may help several other articles due to his collaborations. Help? --Leahtwosaints (talk) 21:21, 7 March 2010 (UTC)

Hi Leah. Some responses:

  • Yes, I know Tvoz well, she's an excellent editor.
  • I don't know enough about Cat/Yusuf to be helpful on that article; the only related articles I ever worked on were Father and Son (song), which I happened to get interested in, and The First Cut is the Deepest, which I knew from Rod Stewart and then got interested in the P.P. Arnold version. But although I liked Stevens fairly well, I never owned any of his albums and don't have a really good understanding of his music.
  • The Natalie Maines article has already lost its GA, it's too late to defend it. And, if you look at Talk:Natalie Maines/GA1, I pushed for it to be stripped. Sorry! Yes, there's lots of picky details that a GA article has to have (and FA is worse), but even besides that, I thought the article was badly unbalanced, focusing too much on her controversies and not enough on her particular musical skills and what she brings to the Dixie Chicks. Alas, I won't be able to help it get back to GA anytime soon, I'm already way behind on all the articles I'm currently working on. And I also agree with TenPoundHammer that the Dixie Chicks main article is the highest priority for improvement of that bunch.
  • The best way to create an album article is to find an existing one for another album that's reasonably similar (same artist or same style of music or same era, whatever), then do "edit" on it, cut and paste that to the new article, then start modifying everything that's different. The typical resources for finding album track listings are Allmusic and Amazon, but I prefer to look at the actual album itself if I own it. The typical resources for album reviews are Allmusic, various print album guides that you find in libraries, the online archives of Rolling Stone (which I find very hard to search in and use), and for more recent works, a bunch of other magazines and professional-quality websites. The best place to find album chart placings in the U.S. is Allmusic, don't know about the UK album charts.
  • Don't know anything at all about Rory Gallagher! So can't help there. The reason I helped out on the Derek Trucks articles is that I've been a big ABB fan for 39 years and so I have a 'feel' for the subject; don't have any for Gallagher, and I almost never work on something I have no feel for.

Anyway, hope this helps, stay in touch. Wasted Time R (talk) 04:27, 9 March 2010 (UTC)

Photos

Hey, I forgot to mention to you that I've become good at finding photos for musicians for their articles-- free images, no copyright issues. I've uploaded about 350 of them to Commons- CC-BY-SA. Take a look at the list below the little gallery on my user page for a partial look! If you're looking for photos or want me to do it, I'd be glad to help, using Creative Commons. --Leahtwosaints (talk) 21:26, 7 March 2010 (UTC)

Yes, I've noticed you've been doing this, with fine results. If you happen to find any of Max Weinberg, especially in connection with either of the Conan shows, please let me know. That article is up for GA and could use an additional image or two. Wasted Time R (talk) 04:06, 9 March 2010 (UTC)
OK Great! I'll have a look-see about Max Weinberg. I was once a semi-pro photographer and songwriter with modest results.(shh!)... but it helps, since throughout my life I've worked with friends in some of the best venues in Rio de Janeiro, London, Washington, D.C., etc., so I got great access to meeting and photographing musicians (and meeting many far better than myself so I still use the connections). I take it you must be North American- Rory Gallagher was a peer of Eric Clapton- same styles of Blues rock (and voted better than Clapton many times by magazines like Melody Maker and some of the Guitar magazines. However, he is Irish, and learned the blues almost alone. For your own edification, check out these- Rory Gallagher "Bad Penny", Rory Gallagher "Tatoo'd Lady --Seriously, man, you need to hear this stuff! After the death of Stevie Ray Vaughn, and other notable musicians, Gallagher developed a really bad case of fear of flying, and the medicines he took required a liver transplant, in 1995, which was sucessful, only to die a few months later from a MRSA infection he sustained in hospital in London. He was only in his mid-forties. If you like rock music, R&B, and especially, the blues, you mustn't cheat yourself. Gallagher was literally headhunted to take Mick Taylor's place in The Rolling Stones-- but preferred to lead his own power trios, with a five year exception of an additional keyboardist which was eventually scrapped. That fear of flying curtailed his tours from Europe to Japan and North America... so few Americans are familiar with him, as Rolling Stone only looks for musicians who make a hit here. Clapton himself credits him as the "man who got me back into the blues"-- Guess I was lucky with a Brazilian heritage living abroad, and then to the USA. Got to see him in Toronto though.. his energy on stage was so electric and charismatic that it was not just awe-inspiring, but frightening at times, the raw energy that would flood the place. Truly, do yourself a favor, take a listen, even if you haven't the time to work on his article!--Leahtwosaints (talk) 05:53, 9 March 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for the YouTube pointers, I've been listening to these two and some others. Power trio isn't my favorite lineup, but I've liked what I've heard more than most of that format. He does some virtuoso playing without going overboard into mindless flash. Once you mentioned it I did remember he was a contender for the Stones job ... I've always kind of regretted that Ron Wood took that, I liked his work with Rod Stewart better. Anyway, sad that Gallagher didn't have a more visible and longer career and life, but from the YouTube comments he seems to have a dedicated following. Max Weinberg

Hey, I added one photo of Max Weinberg to the article. Do me a favor, and don't remove the photographers' name from the caption for about a week, OK? He's not a pro-photographer, and it'll give him enough time to brag to friends & family for now. He does know that his name will be removed from the front of the article, soon, though. Some more look like they are coming. I haven't found any from the Tonight Show yet though-- but did find a few of Soozie Tyrell and The E Street Band that are better than what's on the articles- yours are too far away, and too dark, I'm afraid-- I did see you put some there. Ah well, nothing is permanent. Especially in the musicians' area of the Wikipedia! --Leahtwosaints (talk) 20:37, 10 March 2010 (UTC)

Another thing

E Street Band, onstage during Bruce Springsteen's Working on a Dream Tour, August 1, 2009 Valladolid, Spain

And the other one is this:

Springsteen onstage during his Working on a Dream Tour, August 1, 2009 Valladolid, Spain

I have placed photos on Soozie Tyrell, Max Weinberg, and have the following photos for Bruce Springsteen and of the E Street Band, but people get so touchy about infobox photos, that I thought I'd leave the last two to you, and you can decide where they'd fit, OK? I hope they are to your liking, as well as the others. I really think a more updated photo of Springsteen should belong in the infobox, the one there now is from 1988! Cheers. --Leahtwosaints (talk) 00:02, 11 March 2010 (UTC)

Thanks Leah! I've been adding these in, but have run out of time to comment now. More tonight. Wasted Time R (talk) 13:21, 11 March 2010 (UTC)
Fine! I added another to the Max Weinberg article, and the photographer from the first one was happy enough with the results that he's opened up all his Springsteen-related photos to Creative Commons so we can use them as much as we like! 'Tis why I prefer leaving the photographer's name on the article for a little while at least; I never promise anything, but when they see it, gives them a good feeling (bragging rights with the relatives or whatever), and after, the trust in my relationship with them is very much like in this case where they pretty much will cancel book deals for their photos and instead allow us to use them. I think the Clarence Clemons pic can use an update or a makeover, too. Let me know if there are other musician biographies that need photos. Anytime for you! --Leahtwosaints (talk) 21:06, 11 March 2010 (UTC)
I included these this morning. The Soozie one is clearly better as an infobox image (mine was out of desperation only) but as a top photo I think it should be cropped to take out the mic and Tallent. The E Street Band one was better for id'ing the members, and I've made it the top photo there, moving the existing one down into the article. The Springsteen main article been bedeviled for years by dreadful top photos; I put this new one up there, but it's not really ideal for that either. I opened a discussion of it at Talk:Bruce Springsteen#Top photo redux, feel free to voice your opinion on it there. Wasted Time R (talk) 03:09, 12 March 2010 (UTC)
I just noticed your answer to those photos. I bow to you on the placement; wouldn't have mentioned where I put any of them or left them on your talk page if A) I didn't look to you for more experienced guidance (of any type on WP, since I'm basically all over the place and you do a lot more editing-- it's why I asked YOU to check the [[Derek Trucks article when I saw it was really out of hand), and B) These are obviously articles you have singled out to edit, as I had with the Cat Stevens, and Derek Trucks articles.. and a few others. Put 'em wherever you feel is best! Just tell me if any are not used so I can add them to "other language versions" of the Wikipedia. Like, I stuck another Max Weinberg photo below which obviously can use some cropping on the bottom. BTW the photographer of the photo you placed in Springsteen's infobox was so happy that a bounty of a variety of musician's photos should be forthcoming if we ever request any. THANKS! --Leahtwosaints (talk) 12:20, 24 March 2010 (UTC)

With or Without You

I'm currently trying to expand the article for "With or Without You", and I think the areas it is currently lacking in might be right up your alley. The article needs to go over lyrical interpretations and live performances more, and those are areas that you covered well in the "Running to Stand Still" article. Do you think you could help out with adding some information?

Also, since you have found a number of valuable resources for various song articles, I'm wondering if you have any references that discuss sales/charting/popularity of the Live at Red Rocks: Under a Blood Red Sky concert film. Let me know, thanks. Y2kcrazyjoker4 (talk) 15:04, 11 March 2010 (UTC)

Sorry, I've almost completely retired from working on U2 articles, so I'm not up for any more research. I will see "Running" and "Ultraviolet" through their GA reviews, however. Wasted Time R (talk) 03:36, 12 March 2010 (UTC)

If this is about your disagreements with Merbabu and myself on some articles, I would ask you to reconsider - we all disagree with each other from time to time (heck, look at the last 6 months of Achtung Baby!). You've added a lot of valuable content to U2 articles, and I don't want us to dissuade you from continuing to do that. Y2kcrazyjoker4 (talk) 16:04, 12 March 2010 (UTC)

I've also had lots of what I thought were valuable content, photos, formattings, phrasings, references, etc. thrown out of U2 articles, and the editing dynamic has been unproductive and unpleasant for me. Whether I was "right" or "wrong" or just not tough enough doesn't matter in the end; there are many other areas of WP where I can be more productive and enjoy it more. More Springsteen-related photos

Clemons and Springsteen, with harmonica; Working on a Dream Tour 2009, Valladolid, Spain
Springsteen with his Telecaster, Working on a Dream Tour 2009, Valladolid, Spain
Bruce, Working on a Dream Tour 2009, Valladolid, Spain

I placed a couple photos. One is on Steven Van Zandt's article, and a nice one I added to the Working on a Dream Tour (I think it fits well there), and another of Clarence Clemons doing a solo of "Jungleland", I replaced with a clearer one. The articles are your work --I know there's no ownership, but still, when we edit we still have a plan in mind or on the back burner of the sandbox, so feel free to revert. Here are some other ones; you decide where they go! Oh, two things. I think that Clemons needs a better and more up to date photo in his infobox.. I can't tell what's going on with his eyes and glasses unless I see the whole enlarged thing, so I'm going to look for one.. and oh, yeah, the one above with the Fender Telecaster might go well anywhere or in a section on Springsteen's equipment, I didn't look.. he and Nils Lofgren (my personal favourite from the band members) both use the same guitar, but I guess you know that. Some of the photos you took would be lovely but are so dark! It's why I replaced another of yours. But you are better at this stuff, you decide, as I said, but if you have a favourite photo and want it nuked and lightened tastefully, just ask.--Leahtwosaints (talk) 22:54, 11 March 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for getting more of these. However, be careful with your identifications. The one of Clarence is not of his "Jungleland" solo, as that song wasn't even played that night. Based on the setlist for that show, the image's timestamp, the Flickr sequence of photos, and the lighting and stage position, it's almost certainly of "Night" (I consulted with a heavy duty Springsteen fan to verify this). So it's a good addition to the Clarence article, but I've restored the "Jungleland" one I took too. As for my pix being dark and far away ... yes, but that's how the vast majority of the audience sees the show, especially in arena and stadium venues. Part of what makes the "Jungleland" solo what it is is that the whole stage is thrown into darkness with all attention focused on Clarence. A close-up shot from in front of the stage won't convey that. So why my pix are admittedly inferior for certain purposes such as infobox top photos, I do use them in tour articles and song articles where capturing the whole scene is valuable. Of course, close-up photos can be used as well; it's not an either-or proposition. Wasted Time R (talk) 02:52, 12 March 2010 (UTC)
Another identification problem: the photo you added to Working on a Dream Tour is not Springsteen in a 'victory pose'. It's during "Raise Your Hand" and he's exhorting and egging on the audience to ... raise their hands. If you look at this YouTube from about 4:45 in you'll see the same sequence from a different show. I've fixed the caption. Wasted Time R (talk) 03:24, 12 March 2010 (UTC)
As for the new ones in this section, I'll look at where they could go. I think the Telecaster one is a good candidate for the Fender Telecaster article or List of Telecaster players, see what you think. Wasted Time R (talk) 03:29, 12 March 2010 (UTC)
I added the one to List of Telecaster players. Wasted Time R (talk) 21:34, 21 March 2010 (UTC)

Did you know?

Our article for Derek Trucks.. I don't know how to nominate it, but I added in his early years a piece that I think is interesting- his Great-Uncle is the baseball pro, Virgil Trucks. For years, both Derek, on the back of his guitar, and his uncle, Butch Trucks, on the back of his drum kit, taped a baseball card of their famous relative, who Derek finally met in 2001, I think it was.. he'd never heard of The Allman Brothers Band, but they got on famously. Would you take a look when you get a chance? I think it's kinda neat. --Leahtwosaints (talk) 22:59, 11 March 2010 (UTC)

Leah, unfortunately, the WP:DYK feature is reserved for brand-new articles created in the last five days, or new full articles that were expanded from short stubs in the last five days. So nothing from Derek Trucks qualifies. But it is a great connection; I read about Virgil Trucks as a kid but never imagined he was related to the ABB Truckses. Max Weinberg

Wasted:

The diff shows that you added the following to an ALT tag for that picture:

"alt=Middle-aged man with slightly graying dark hair and glasses wearing black shirt sits behind a silver-colored, gold-lit drum kit with his left hand and stick about to hit a cymbal and his eyes fixed straight ahead." I reverted because it was not encyclopedic in a BLP.

You know, after I reverted that edit, I looked at your talk page and wondered how someone with your good reputation could have done that. My conclusion: It was either not you that did that or a mistake in a cut and paste. Am I right?

I will remove the vandalism tag from your page. Thanks for the note and you have my apologies - but please try to see my point of view.

Regards.

--Manway (talk) 01:07, 12 March 2010 (UTC)

Are you familiar with what the ALT tag is for? It describes the image for those who can't see it (whether due to visual impairment or text-only devices). What specifically about this description is not accurate or not encyclopedic in your view? Wasted Time R (talk) 01:12, 12 March 2010 (UTC)
Yes, I'm familiar with the ALT tag. It also appears on most browsers when the picture is moused over. How about: "Max Weinberg behind his drum kit in concert, July 27, 2009 in Spain"?? The tag could be construed as belittling to middle-aged men with graying hair and glasses. Like me. 8^) --Manway (talk) 01:20, 12 March 2010 (UTC)
You're confusing the ALT description with the caption. Please read WP:ALT: "Alt text is meant for those who cannot see the image, whereas the caption is intended for all readers." What you propose is caption text. Look at WP:ALT's example of a good alt description for a portrait: "Head and shoulders of a serious and dignified woman in her forties, with dark hair up and in a dress with high lace collar and a cameo at her throat, Edwardian style." Age and appearance is exactly what an ALT description is supposed to get across, because the user of the ALT is presumed not to be able to see the image. Wasted Time R (talk) 02:15, 12 March 2010 (UTC)

Hi - I see you have this up for GA review. I'm a bit stretched at present, so not going to do the whole thing. If you haven't had someone volunteer by end of the month, send me a message and I'll do it. Meantime, there is something very wierd going on in the first para of "Move to The Tonight Show", which isn't about the move at all, but reads like the customary "personal life" section at the end of such an article. It can't stay as it is - have a look at either creating a personal section at the end, or integrating this material some other way. In general the article looks good. Cheers, hamiltonstone (talk) 01:41, 17 March 2010 (UTC)

The material was there for a reason, but you're right, the reason wasn't very clear. I've rearranged it now, see what you think. As for the review, don't worry about it, long waits are the norm, and any comments always welcome. Wasted Time R (talk) 03:22, 17 March 2010 (UTC)

Mitt Romney talk archives

Can I interest you in fixing the talk archives to Mitt Romney, since you're fairly active there these days.
There's an 'archive1' and also an 'archive_1'

All of the 'archive_x' need to be moved up one number, and the old 'archive1' should be fit into the current naming regime.
See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Mitt_Romney/Archive_1#Archives
-- Yellowdesk (talk) 18:53, 21 March 2010 (UTC)

I tried ... I feared the move of 6 to 7, 5 to 6, etc wouldn't work because it wouldn't allow the moves over existing articles, so I tried moving the archive1 to Archive 0, in line with the others, in hopes that the talk page would pick up that the number sequence began with 0. That didn't work, so I tried adding an explicit "mask" parameter to pick the Archive 0. That didn't work, so I went back to trying to do the full set of moves, but the 5 to 6 move failed as I thought it would. So I moved 7 back to 6, but now the talk page thinks 7 is an archive too. So I've made it worse not better ... this needs the attention of an admin or a talk archive expert. Wasted Time R (talk) 20:58, 21 March 2010 (UTC)

Ouch. Apologies for asking you in on that. Should I ask an admin, or should you? -- Yellowdesk (talk) 16:03, 22 March 2010 (UTC)

You can go ahead, I have no luck with anything to do with talk page archives ... Wasted Time R (talk) 23:51, 22 March 2010 (UTC)

Another Weinberg photo from Rome

Weinberg performing in Rome, Italy, July 19, 2009

Hi- probably you have far too many already, but here's one from Roma.. it was a late response.. put it someplace nice, let me know if you don't use it, and I'll place it on the Portuguese version of the Wikipedia, or the Spanish one, but I'd like to show this new amateur photographer that it was used, someplace! Any other photo requests? --Leahtwosaints (talk) 12:08, 24 March 2010 (UTC)

Well, as you can see, the article now has lots of pictures of Weinberg playing with Springsteen in the late 2000s. Alas it doesn't have any from earlier decades, and as I said before what it really needs is something showing the Conan side of Max. This one's a big grainier than the others too (enlarged maybe). Since it was taken in Rome, the Italian article might be a good place to add it to.
As for photo requests, if you want a challenge, The Rascals have nothing and Felix Cavaliere only one hideous blow-up. There's also little in The Animals or the articles for their members, other than one shot of Eric Burdon looking very attitudinous and a couple of old group shots with dodgy rationales. Wasted Time R (talk) 02:59, 25 March 2010 (UTC)
As for Max Weinberg working with Conan O'Brien, would this be the kind of thing you are seeking? [2] (I'm not really familiar with Conan O'Brien.) But if so, I should be able to ask and get one like this. --Leahtwosaints (talk) 15:06, 27 March 2010 (UTC)
Yes, that's indeed the kind of thing (it's from a Late Night with Conan O'Brien done on the road in Chicago and shows the Max Weinberg 7). Thanks for the effort on this! Wasted Time R (talk) 15:11, 27 March 2010 (UTC)
OK I've sent her the Flickrmail, should have a response in a couple of days. File source problem with File:AlisonSteele.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:AlisonSteele.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of that website's terms of use of its content. However, if the copyright holder is a party unaffiliated from the website's publisher, that copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider verifying that you have specified sources for those files as well. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged per Wikipedia's criteria for speedy deletion, F4. If the image is copyrighted and non-free, the image will be deleted 48 hours after 14:36, 26 March 2010 (UTC) per speedy deletion criterion F7. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 14:36, 26 March 2010 (UTC)
