I will try to add a reference or two in the next couple of days. Lucius Beebe wrote about him frequently in his many writings. Also, some of the hotel and hospitality industry writings have references to him. He was apparently an intimate of many of the famous of the 30's, 40's and 50's. His restaurant, the The Pump Room, Chicago was the preferred stopping-over point for celebrities switching trains in Chicago from the 20th Century Limited to the Super Chief, etc. on their way between the West Coast the East Coast. New Article Improvment page for WP:VIRGINIA[edit]

Seeing as our old Collaborations page at WP:VIRGINIA had no activity in the past year it was decided to replace it with a new Article Improvement/Request Help page that would allow members to list articles in need of attention. NPOV Assertion[edit]

Hello! This concerns the CCG Systems article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CCG_Systems

You had tagged a section of the article as "written like an advertisement." I have removed the most offending statement from it, and only left justifiable facts. For your convenience, I have cut and pasted the text:

FASTER is a computerized database management and reporting system designed for usage by organizations with fleet vehicle assets. Initial editions of FASTER were developed for use under the BOS operating system. In 1995 FASTER was redeveloped for usage on Windows client-server platforms with an installed instance of MS SQL or Oracle. Mobile and Internet web based versions are scheduled for release in 2008.

These are all FACTS, with cites referred in the article where needed, and without negative or positive leanings (I do not claim it is the worst or the best - only that they exist and a date given). I feel such statements are no more different than those made in article such as Windows or Firefox. As per the advertisement ruling: articles about companies and products are acceptable if they are written in an objective and unbiased style. I feel the article is objective and unbiased. I wish to confer with you, since such steps need to be taken before involving a third opinion for arbitration, as per Wikipedia recommends.

You give Windows and Firefox as examples of notable products. I agree. Both of those products have independent, 3rd party books written about them. They are also widely used and generally well-known products in the general populace. A specialized piece of fleet vehicle management software seems to me to have a high hurdle to overcome to demonstrate its impact on society and notability. The sources cited as independent non-interested 3rd parties are either incidental mentions, such as quotations from employees of CCG Systems in articles about the industry, or they are reprints of company press releases placed in industry publications. I admit that the notability issue is not black and white, but the independent 3rd party references seem shaky at best. Normally, I would expect to see lengthier articles or more in-depth analysis of a company in order to warrant its notability for encyclopedic versions. The best reference is to have a 3rd party write a lengthy, multi-page article or even a book about a company. Having press-release-like two and three paragraph inserts in trade publications geared towards purchasers of the company's products reads too much like self-serving propaganda. I'm still not convinced of the notability of the company or its product. VirginiaProp 21:21, 29 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]


If you don't mind, I'll just sum both my arguments into this reply. Will save me sanity and time. ^_^ While I can understand what you are saying, note that Wikipedia does not use "magnitude" as the measure of notability, but verifiability and reference. The company meets all criteria needed for inclusion within Wikipedia (primary and secondary sources with truthful citation/reference). Furthermore, that one suite of CCG's fleet management costs $400K to $500K is not something insignificant (x270 clients that would be over $100 million). References found via a Google search, are also not totally commercial in nature: several are government documentation for procurement (requests for city budget to purchase the software client). Further detail can be obtained through public access of City Hall records. Government Fleet is a magazine publication dedicated to Fleet Management - one can order a subscription from them (free if government; must pay if not). Just because fleet management is not a "common" factor in everyday life, should not be used against it for entry. CCG is a multi million dollar corporation - what the "notability" clause against companies is for, is to prevent each and every "mom and pop stores" from having a Wikipedia article. I believe I have proven CCG is not a "mom and pop" company: counties and cities in two nations (Canada and the US) have purchased FASTER as their central fleet management software suite. These can be cited for truth through various channels that are not exclusively available to myself. Third party references are available - the meatiest of all would be the budget transcripts and requests from government entities - which obviously exist - but these are not readily found online for immediate access. Also requesting such materials can take MONTHS... I have already requested for several in the local area... but there's the processing and waiting. However, using the above examples again - http://www.city.vancouver.bc.ca/CTYCLERK/CCLERK/980730/a3.htm - that's a third party justification that gives it's own assessment of CCG and the importance of having it (i.e. why the city of Vancouver should pay 1 million for a new fleet system with FASTER). Another was for King County in the state of Washington - http://www.metrokc.gov/dnrp/swd/about/documents/2005_SWANA_Landfill-Mgmt.pdf - These are not commercial. These are civil agencies - no different than the military publishing their own reports and research. None really. I just happen to have strange interests in obscure things. For example I'm also writing an article for High School Drama! - which is a relatively unknown game - and did various odds and ends for Sister Princess... among others. It's just that I really use Google to the fullest when hunting info. I've grown careful in covering all my bases, since two past articles I devoted a lot of time and effort upon, were deleted simply because I didn't frame them correctly... later someone else resurrected them, cut and pasting everything I did, but following the rules of Wikipedia. Sucked hardcore to see someone else get credit for my hard work. So yeah... I've picked odd "no one cares about" issues and decided to work on them. Learning as I go along... However I do live in Virginia, and I pass by the CCG headquarters on my way to downtown Norfolk (it's at a stoplight). That's how I know the company exists. I'm not trying to be difficult with you. The article is well put together. However, I'm still not convinced that the article meets the notability standards for companies. I do not really know how to solve the problem other than the way that I did. I placed it where I did because otherwise it would take up a lot of space on its own. Howdy, a goal of mine is to eventually get the Template:American wine filled with blue links of articles of the wine industry in each state. There is currently not an article on Virginia wine. adding wikiprojects[edit]

Hi there! I notice that you've been adding WikiProject tags to various Virginia- and university-related articles. When doing so, feel free to assess the article's quality by filling in the class= variable in the banner's code. For example, to tag a university article as being "B-Class", simply type {{WikiProject Universities|class=B}} on the talk page. Doing this while you're tagging the articles the first time through means that someone else won't have to go back and assess it later on. No problems. You didn't do anything wrong. Editing tags are useful and you should view them as help when you are creating an article. The tags make sure that the article gets put on a list that other WikiPedians can view of articles that need various types of assistance. Article creation is collabarative on WP and assistance can be very helpful. Most of us don't have the time or resources to create an article and take it to full GA status on our own. Also, tags are a way for an editor to mark something that needs to be improved, but for which he either doesn't have the time, the knowledge or the interest in improving himself. Wine Project activity[edit]

This is a friendly note to let you know that you have been moved to the Inactive members page of the Wine Project. Users are moved to this page when two months have passed without any Wikipedia activity or 3 months have passed without any contribution to a wine related article. The intent of the Participant list is to function as a resource for other editors wishing to get in contact with wine project members for comments or question on Wikipedia's wine article. The goal of this process is to try and maintain the Wikipedia:WikiProject Wine/Participants as current and up to date as possible with active and contributing members. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. Hi. I visited the image page prompted by OrphanBot's change to List of NHLs in VA. Photo appears taken from this webpage. It appears you had believed (reasonably) that it was in public domain because that webpage is one of the National Park Service. However, National Park Service copyright information statements indicate that not all photos on NPS webpages are public domain. Those with separate credits, such as this one credited to Virginia DHR, are not public domain. See Wikipedia:WikiProject National Register of Historic Places#some but not all National Park Service photos are public domain for some expansion on that, with link to NPS copyright statement.
