Discussion about closed requested move
Dear Calidum, I saw that you closed the requested move concerning EURECOM. Unfortunately, I believe that the explanation you gave concerning the decision is not valid. Indeed, the proposed title EURECOM is an acronym for "EURope, École et COMmunication" and thus it can be capitalized still respecting the MOS:TM. Consequently, the proposed title would not run afoul of the WP:MOS as you claim. User:Yaksar kindly summarized in its last comment the reasons why some of the responses seem contradictory and why the change of title can be accepted, pointing out that, since there is not an overwhelmingly clear common name, the logical decision would be to pick the official one. Please, notice that the capitalized name is the one used among first sources such as the website of the institution [1], the Medium blog [2] and research papers taken from the official repository of publications [3]. My personal opinion is that Eurecom is often used instead of EURECOM because people do not know that the official name is EURECOM and usually people do not pay attention to these details. Therefore my belief is that, if the official name, which respects the MOS:TM, will appear on Wikipedia, then people will use the correct name of the institution when writing about it. - While Eurecom is an acronym, MOS:TM does not require us to capitalize it. The MOS states "When deciding how to format a trademark, editors should examine styles already in use by independent reliable sources. From among those, choose the style that most closely resembles standard English – regardless of the preference of the trademark owner," (emphasis in the original). Per the discussion, independent reliable sources do not consistently capitalize the entire name, so we default to lower case. Calidum 14:48, 23 July 2020 (UTC)
- @Calidum: Unfortunately, I am not convinced. Even though the MOS:TM does not require to capitalize an acronym, it allows to do it, so why not using the official name EURECOM instead the non-official one? If not even an influential resource as Wikipedia opts for the correct name, which is allowed according to the MOS:TM, how could we expect people to consistently capitalize the name in independent reliable sources if the first result which comes out when looking for EURECOM on Google is Eurecom from Wikipedia? In general I am skeptical regarding the "independent reliable sources" argument of the MOS: nowadays it is pretty common to use Wikipedia as a reference for names typesetting, so looking at independent reliable sources to decide on a page name is like a dog chasing its tail. I believe that keeping Eurecom instead of EURECOM will continue to generate confusion and independent reliable sources will continue to be inconsistent due to this choice. - Certainly I will propose a modification of the guideline, e.g., use independent reliable sources only if the nature of the name is not clear or specified. Then, it is true that the consensus at the RM was clear, but it is also true that, as the two editors pointed out below, I updated the proposal (with the acronym argument) after the first three oppose votes arrived, so those oppose arguments were not completely true anymore. Indeed, you concluded that there was consensus that the proposed title would run afoul of the WP:MOS, even though this is not correct, as already explained. As suggested below, relisting or modification to "no consensus" would be advisable to get more opinions. Bruibro (talk) 06:57, 27 July 2020 (UTC)

- So, what I will say is that the discussion is somewhat hard to parse because both emphatic oppose !votes came before it was pointed out (and the proposal was updated) to note that it was actually an acronym. The editor who did come back to the discussion after this was pointed out retracted their !vote. While it might be logical to simply relist and get more opinions, a simpler solution may just be to wait a little bit and then re-propose, but this time with the acronym clearly acknowledged in the proposal from the beginning.--Yaksar (let's chat) 16:10, 23 July 2020 (UTC)

for some reason I hadn't read the nom properly since I was looking mainly what others had said) and indeed the source provided by Yaksar does support this. The thing that put me of supporting is that http://www.eurecom.fr/publication/6243 has "© Elsevier". I would indeed recommend relisting or otherwise modifying this to "no consensus". While the "oppose" !votes were based on policy and provided sources they didn't address the nom's point about it being an acronym. I suspect the reason many English sources don't capitalize it could simply be because its a translation from French. Followup question regarding requested move of Mormonism and Christianity
An anonymous user requested a move and I participated in the discussion about that, just as I had participated earlier in the discussion about the title being POV. Much of the opposition centered around the rather poorly worded suggested replacement for the title. Personally, I strongly agree the page needs to be renamed, but I do not want to contest the decision to close it, but would rather propose a league less objectionable alternative.
Therefore I should like to ask whether it would be within acceptable Wikipedia decorum to simply open a new request to move.
For what it matters, I don't even know how I ever stumbled upon this article. I do note that the article's editing history there have been a number of edits that have been attempted on subjective religious beliefs. Vincent J. Lipsio (talk) 18:37, 4 August 2020 (UTC)
- Generally speaking, a new move request after a closed one is looked down upon. However, there is some leeway if you propose a different alternative than the one just rejected. I personally won't be offended and appreciate you reaching out first. -- Calidum 18:52, 4 August 2020 (UTC)
I do want to contest the decision. I was surprised that it was closed without clear consensus. At first glance it looked like unanimous, but on closer look, it was far from it. I'd ask that you re-consider the closure. Barrelproof and Awilley were the only ones opposed. Epachamo, Vincent J. Lipsio, Yaksar, and the anonymous submitter were all in favor of a name change. - At best, there was no consensus rather than consensus not to move and I will update my close to reflect that based upon WP:NOGOODOPTIONS. The nominator obviously supported their own move, but the others you mention are less certain. Yaksar said the current title is potentially problematic, but did not explicitly support the proposed to title or any alternative. VJL also agreed the page needed to move, but to different titles than the one suggested. You did the same thing, explicitly opposing the proposed title. By my count then, five editors opposed the proposed title, which certainly isn't consensus to move it there. -- Calidum 20:46, 4 August 2020 (UTC)

My curiosity was peaked when I noticed that you did not change the {{initiated}} template to {{done}} or {{close}}, as a signal for Cluebot III to archive it. As I'm unfamiliar with how this process works, how/when is it determined that a discussion should be archived? Is it because of where the request appears on the Project Page? - Why are you and the rest of the usual suspects stonewalling? You cannot just point to ONUS and say there is no consensus. The whole discussion is an example of moving the goalposts. First it was "no one is covering it." Then it was, "so what if people are covering it, it's still undue." Then the typical cry BLP defense. September Drive: Our current backlog-elimination drive is open until 23:59 on 30 September (UTC) and is open to all copy editors. Sign up today! Election reminder: our end-of-year Election of Coordinators opens for nominations on 1 December. Coordinators normally serve a six-month term and are elected on an approval basis. Self-nominations are welcome. If you've thought of helping out at the Guild, or know of another editor who would make a good coordinator, please consider standing for election or nominating them here. Drive and Blitz reports
June Blitz: An uncorrected typo (even copy editors make copy editing mistakes!) led to an eight-day "leap blitz" from 14 to 21 June, focusing on requests and articles tagged in May. 19 participating editors claimed 54 copy edits. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. July Drive: Over 750,000 words of articles were copy edited for this event, keeping pace with the previous three self-isolated drives. Of the 38 people who signed up, 30 copyedited at least one article. Final results and awards are listed here. August Blitz: From 16 to 22 August, we copy edited articles tagged in June and July 2020 and requests. 12 participating editors completed 37 copy edits on the blitz. - The Universal Code of Conduct draft is open for community review and comment until October 6th, 2020.

- Sysops will be able to use Special:CreateLocalAccount to create a local account for a global user that is prevented from auto-creation locally (such as by a filter or range block). Administrators that are not sure if such a creation is appropriate should contact a checkuser.

- The 2020 Arbitration Committee Elections process has begun. Eligible editors will be able to nominate themselves as candidates from November 8 through November 17. The voting period will run from November 23 through December 6.

- I just read that whole page and I didn't see that. Can you provide a direct link to something that specifically states that. What I read is that it can be removed after being archived. September Drive: 67 fewer articles had copy-edit templates by this month's close. Of the 27 editors who signed up, 15 copy-edited at least one article, and 124 articles were claimed for the drive. October Blitz: this ran from 18 to 24 October, and focused on articles tagged for copy-edit in July and August 2020, and all Requests. Of the 13 who signed up, 11 editors copy-edited at least one article. 21 articles were claimed for the blitz. November Drive: Of the 18 editors who signed up, 15 copy-edited at least one article, and together claimed 134 articles. At the close of the drive, 67 fewer articles were in the backlog and we had dealt with 39 requests. Other news
Progress report: As of 09:05, 3 December 2020 (UTC), GOCE copyeditors had processed 663 requests (18 from 2019) since 1 January and there were 52 requests awaiting completion on the Requests page. The backlog of articles tagged for copy-editing stood at 494 (see monthly progress graph above).
