Guild of Copy Editors July 2016 News

Hello everyone, and welcome to the July 2016 GOCE newsletter.

June Blitz: this one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 12 through 18 June; the themes were video games and Asian geography. Of the 18 editors who signed up, 11 removed 47 articles from the backlog. Barnstars and rollover totals are located here. Thanks to all editors who took part.

Coordinator elections: The second tranche of Guild coordinators for 2016, who will serve a six-month term until 23:59 UTC on 31 December, have been elected. Jonesey95 remains as your drama-free Lead Coordinator, and Corinne and Tdslk are your new assistant coordinators. For her long service to the Guild, Miniapolis has been enrolled in the GOCE Hall of Fame. Thanks to everyone who voted in the election; our next scheduled one occurs in December 2016. All Wikipedia editors in good standing are eligible; self-nominations are welcome and encouraged.

July Drive: Our month-long July Copy Editing Backlog Elimination Drive is now underway. Our aim is to remove articles tagged for copy-edit in April, May and June 2015, and to complete all requests on the GOCE Requests page from June 2016. The drive ends at 23:59 on 31 July 2016 (UTC).

Hello everyone, and welcome to the September 2016 GOCE newsletter.

July Drive: The July drive was a roaring success. We set out to remove April, May, and June 2015 from our backlog (our 149 oldest articles), and by 23 July, we were done with those months. We added July 2015 (66 articles) and copy-edited 37 of those. We also handled all of the remaining Requests from June 2016. Well done! Overall, we recorded copy edits to 240 articles by 20 editors, reducing our total backlog to 13 months and 1,656 articles, the second-lowest month-end total ever.

August Blitz: this one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 21 through 27 August; the theme was sports-related articles in honor of the 2016 Summer Olympics. Of the eight editors who signed up, five editors removed 11 articles from the backlog. A quiet blitz – everyone must be on vacation. Barnstars and rollover totals are located here. Thanks to all editors who took part.

American Revolutionary War and Allies of World War II

First of all, The american revolution did not take place in Gibraltar, balearic islands, Indian ocean nor any place outside the new world, these other theaters took place in their own right unrelated to the battles of the revolution. Second, the Soviet union provided more combatants and casualties in the entire war. This is what we've been through since we've talked since British empire. Patriotism should NOT outweigh historical accuracy. If you look at other Wikipedia pages in the other languages, you'll see no regions of the old world mentioned in the article of the same topic, the english wikipedia is the only one due to historical misinterpretation. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

Hello everyone, and welcome to the December 2016 GOCE newsletter. We had an October newsletter all set to go, but it looks like we never pushed the button to deliver it, so this one contains a few months of updates. We have been busy and successful!

Coordinator elections for the first half of 2017: Nominations are open for election of Coordinators for the first half of 2017. Please visit the election page to nominate yourself or another editor, and then return after December 15 to vote. Thanks for participating!

September Drive: The September drive was fruitful. We set out to remove July through October 2015 from our backlog (an ambitious 269 articles), and by the end of the month, we had cut that pile of oldest articles to just 83. We reduced our overall backlog by 97 articles, even with new copyedit tags being added to articles every day. We also handled 75% of the remaining Requests from August 2016. Overall, 19 editors recorded copy edits to 233 articles (over 378,000 words).

October Blitz: this one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 16 through 22 October; the theme was Requests, since the backlog was getting a bit long. Of the 16 editors who signed up, 10 editors completed 29 requests. Barnstars and rollover totals are located here. Thanks to all editors who took part.

November Drive: The November drive was a record-breaker! We set out to remove September through December 2015 from our backlog (239 articles), and by the end of the month, we had cut that pile of old articles to just 66, eliminating the two oldest months! We reduced our overall backlog by 523 articles, to a new record low of 1,414 articles, even with new tags being added to articles every day, which means we removed copy-editing tags from over 800 articles. We also handled all of the remaining Requests from October 2016. Officially, 14 editors recorded copy edits to 200 articles (over 312,000 words), but over 600 articles, usually quick fixes and short articles, were not recorded on the drive page.

If my analysis of previous election results is correct, you are the first user that was never an admin to crack the 50% mark, which also means your performance was the best a never-sysop has achieved. I think consensus was pretty clear against the requested move. Similar move requests here, here, here and here have already failed, so I don't think consensus would change at the one in question. Calidum 15:50, 17 December 2016 (UTC)
I would have preferred a better discussion. A decision taken after a thorough discussion is more helpful. For example at Talk:Flag_of_China#Requested_move_3_December_2016, the consensus was pretty tight (8 opposes vs 6 supports). That was after being relisted twice. In this particular case, I see 3 supports and 4 opposes. Considering that George Ho recently left a message at WP:CHINA, it would have benefited from a bit more discussion. Similar move requests for places in the Western countries (such as at Talk:New York/July 2016 move request) are usually left open for a much longer time. --Lemongirl942 (talk) 16:10, 17 December 2016 (UTC)
The length of time another RM was left open doesn't have much relevance to the discussion in question. The arguments given in opposition to the move (WP:COMMONNAME and the name of the main article) were far stronger than those raised in support. Calidum 21:09, 17 December 2016 (UTC)

It's nothing personal, but you do have a pattern of pushing forward move requests for (to me) specious reasons, the Exile on Main St. one being a good example. I would suggest you slow down the number of move requests you make; I count 21 open requests at this moment where you're the nominator. That's a lot. Re-reading my nominations, I still have good reasons to make RMs. Most of titles are either messy or undeserved challenged were either unstable, poorly stable, or something like that. Discussing titles with others... Must I ask the person responsible to change it back? Would that be necessary? I wouldn't say there is a limit, really. Just make sure you think an article should be moved because of WP:AT and related pages (and maybe give yourself a quick refresher on them). You undid my contribution on the Great Seal of the Realm.

Can you please explain your reason?

The Great Seal of the Realm was not the Great Seal of England prior to the Union. The Great Seal of the Realm was the Great Seal of Great Britain. The Great Seal of England was the Great Seal of the Kingdom of England and the Great Seal of Scotland was the Great Seal of the Kingdom of Scotland. The Great Seal of the Realm was the Great Seal of both Scotland and England. It is a paradox situation as both Scotland and England were separate Kingdoms but part of the same Realm.

I am from the United Kingdom. You are from the United States. I suggest we both edit my contribution to reach a proper lead paragraph. The lead paragraph is inconsistent with the body of the article. You believe the Great Seal of the Realm was the Great Seal of England prior to the Treaty and Acts of Union. This belief is incorrect, the Great Seal of the Realm was the Great Seal of Great Britain prior to the Treaty of Union. It is a paradox situation. About Tampopo/Tanpopo and/or In ictu oculi

I don't know what to do about Tanpopo (band), Tanpopo (disambiguation), and Tampopo (film) without being bold. I have an urge to move boldly and then do the RMs. However, I can't without discussing this with you. Look at stats. Seems that 'm' and 'n' is distinguishable enough, no?

Also, Tampopo/Tanpopo is not the only case. Look at the page move In ictu oculi causes. I don't know how much cleanup I can make. I tried talking to him, but he personally made a comment about me at my user talk page and told me that he doesn't want to collaborate with me. I don't know whether to take this to ANI or AN, but my reputation is on the line. I have to be cautious about my next move. I tried Ss112, but he sounded almost reluctant to take this to ANI and to talk to IIO. What else shall I do?

I want to discuss the redirect page "Politics of Taiwan" at RFD. I'm planning to retarget it to History of Taiwan. However, if I take this to RFD, would I reignite the the China/Taiwan vs. official name debate? Shall I propose this? --George Ho (talk) 10:07, 19 January 2017 (UTC)
