WikiCup 2020 May newsletter

The second round of the 2020 WikiCup has now finished. It was a high-scoring round and contestants needed 75 points to advance to round 3. There were some very impressive efforts in round 2, with the top ten contestants all scoring more than 500 points. A large number of the points came from the 12 featured articles and the 186 good articles achieved in total by contestants, and the 355 good article reviews they performed; the GAN backlog drive and the stay-at-home imperative during the COVID-19 pandemic may have been partially responsible for these impressive figures.

Our top scorers in round 2 were:

  • New York (state) Epicgenius, with 2333 points from one featured article, forty-five good articles, fourteen DYKs and plenty of bonus points
  • England Gog the Mild, with 1784 points from three featured articles, eight good articles, a substantial number of featured article and good article reviews and lots of bonus points
  • Botswana The Rambling Man, with 1262 points from two featured articles, eight good articles and a hundred good article reviews
  • Somerset Harrias, with 1141 points from two featured articles, three featured lists, ten good articles, nine DYKs and a substantial number of featured article and good article reviews
  • England Lee Vilenski with 869 points, Gondor Hog Farm with 801, Venezuela Kingsif with 719, Cascadia (independence movement) SounderBruce with 710, United States Dunkleosteus77 with 608 and Mexico MX with 515.

The rules for featured article reviews have been adjusted; reviews may cover three aspects of the article, content, images and sources, and contestants may receive points for each of these three types of review. Please also remember the requirement to mention the WikiCup when undertaking an FAR for which you intend to claim points. Remember also that DYKs cannot be claimed until they have appeared on the main page. As we enter the third round, any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed now, and anything you forgot to claim in round 2 cannot! Remember too, that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Ohio Wikimedians User Group: May 2020 newsletter

General Updates

I hope this message finds you well and in good health during these trying times. Below is a list of some online activities that you may be interested in participating in.

  • The Wiki Global Check In has started! This initiative is gathering check-ins from Wikimedians all around the world, and asks for a photo that captures something related to life in your context or part of the world during the pandemic.
  • WALRUS (Wikimedians Active in Local Regions of the United States) is now hosting virtual meetings twice a month on Monday evenings. This is a place to discuss anything Wikimedia, as well as a place for Wikimedians to come together and mutually support each other. The next virtual meeting should be on Memorial Day, May 25th. You can sign up for the Wikimediaus-l mailing list to stay up to date on all WALRUS happenings and to receive meeting invites.
  • Wikipedians have been busy documenting the pandemic. In Ohio, we have articles on the pandemic in Ohio and in Columbus (the latter of which was written by our newest Ohio Wikimedians member, !). If interested, you're encouraged to help update and expand these articles, or even consider creating articles documenting the pandemic in other Ohio metro areas.
View of Florence from San Miniato by Thomas Cole, an American painter who once settled in Steubenville, Ohio, and won third-place in a competition to design the Ohio Statehouse. This painting is in the Cleveland Museum of Art's collection.
  • If you miss visiting your local museums, don't forget that the Cleveland Museum of Art's entire collection is available online and in the public domain (when permissible). Our WikiProject Cleveland Museum of Art is currently tracking 44 English Wikipedia articles and 40,322 images, which are now acquiring over 2,000,000 views a month. If you're interested in contributing, there is still plenty of work to be done to expand and create new articles!

Movement Strategy

  • The finalized Movement Strategy Recommendations have been published! This is a clarified and refined version of the recommendations that were released in January.
  • The Wikimedia Summit 2020 that was to occur in April was canceled, and Wikimedia Deutschland will not be hosting a virtual replacement. In its stead, Ryan Merkley, members of the movement strategy core team, and external consultants are exploring options to move the contents of the conference into a series of virtual events.
Have something for the next newsletter? Add it to our June 2020 draft.

On behalf of the Ohio Wikimedians User Group,

Articles for Creation: List of reviewers by subject notice

Hi Valereee, you are receiving this notice because you are listed as an active Articles for Creation reviewer.

Recently a list of reviewers by area of expertise was created. This notice is being sent out to alert you to the existence of that list, and to encourage you to add your name to it. If you or other reviewers come across articles in the queue where an acceptance/decline hinges on specialist knowledge, this list should serve to facilitate contact with a fellow reviewer.

To end on a positive note, the backlog has dropped below 1,500, so thanks for all of the hard work some of you have been putting into the AfC process!

Sent to all Articles for Creation reviewers as a one-time notice. To opt-out of all massmessage mailings, you may add Category:Wikipedians who opt out of message delivery to your user talk page. Regards, Sam-2727 (talk)

Thanks for bringing Detroit-style pizza to GA-class through your volunteer work on English Wikipedia, and have a good one! North America1000 14:48, 27 May 2020 (UTC)
  • Thanks again, and by the way, that pizza is scrumptious. It is really good, I've had it before, although not in Detroit. North America1000 16:11, 27 May 2020 (UTC)
I went through Detroit twice a few months ago and not only tried the real stuff (plus a Detroit-style coney) but was able to buy some Wisconsin brick cheese so I could make the pizza at home. Wish I had the exact right pan, but I'm loathe to spend $40 on the authentic pan for something I'll likely make once or twice a year. Trying to convince myself a nice heavy pan is always a good addition to the kitchen :) —valereee (talk) 17:41, 28 May 2020 (UTC)

Sharper, whoa, I was waiting for my watchlist to refresh and realized I hadn't visited a certain edit, and I clicked, and as it was mid-refresh I misclicke to (what I thought was) your edit, which wasn't what I was interested in, and I just shook my head, closed the window, and went back to my watchlist to try again. I didn't even realize I clicked revert, not just clicked to the edit, and my apologies, I didn't look at it closely enough -- I didn't realize I'd actually made an edit! Hello! As a Canadian I have always understood "the talk" as referring to the sex talk parents give to their children. (Five examples, several of which are book titles: "The Talk: What Your Kids Need to Hear from You About Sex", "OK—IT'S TIME FOR “THE TALK” Now that we understand our need to talk to our children about sex", "Facing "The Talk": Conversations with My Four Daughters About Sex", "More Than Just the Talk: Becoming Your Kids' Go-To Person About Sex", "Of course, they won;t brag about getting The Talk, but they will actually be proud of you if you honestly approach the issue ol sex in a conversational, nonjudgmental way.") I wonder if some kind of disambiguation will be necessary at some point? That said, I think your article is a great addition. ThatMontrealIP (talk) 23:59, 31 May 2020 (UTC)

PS: It is actually explicitly mentioned in the lede for The birds and the bees. It's a tricky one to disambiguate!ThatMontrealIP (talk) 00:04, 1 June 2020 (UTC)
ThatMontrealIP, yes, that was my original understanding of 'the talk', too, and it's surprising we don't have an article for that, either. I was thinking The talk (racism) and The talk (sex) might eventually be the correct titles? —valereee (talk) 10:46, 1 June 2020 (UTC)
Hello! To tell you the truth, I don't know hat is the best solution. I do think that the (parenting) modifier is too definitive in that it leaves out the other meanings. I just wanted to make sure you knew about the other possible meaning of the phrase, seeing as this is global encyclopedia whose editors span many cultures!ThatMontrealIP (talk) 19:10, 3 June 2020 (UTC)
Yeah, I'm with you. I think I'll just leave it to the community. Someone will no doubt have a better idea. :) —valereee (talk) 19:22, 3 June 2020 (UTC)

I reverted one of your changes.

Floyd talk page

FYI, this edit request seems to be a common cut and paste from at least one (unreliable) website. I'm not sure if I'm going overboard with WP:BLP and revdel'ing it, but I wont that particular one as there's been quite a few intermediate edits after. Do you know what is common (not necessarily written) practice on highly visible BLP talk pages? Or what is your M.O for this page? (I'm too lazy to query at WP:BLPN or WP:AN.) Thanks.—Bagumba (talk) 12:39, 8 June 2020 (UTC)

Bagumba, hm, no, I don't. I don't have any particular MO in mind, feel free to declare one! We could maybe just archive it? —valereee (talk) 12:51, 8 June 2020 (UTC)
I've deleted BLP vios as I see them, leaving "<REDACTED>" if any of the request is worth salvaging. Copyvios I delete—also revdeling unless there's been major edits since.—Bagumba (talk) 13:01, 8 June 2020 (UTC)

Howard Brennan Article

Hey Valereee, I wanted to ask about your edit on the Howard Brennan page: do you really think that is necessary? We take on the eyesight issue elsewhere in the article. Thanks.Rja13ww33 (talk) 16:02, 11 June 2020 (UTC)

Rja13ww33, this wasn't an eyesight thing, it was whether pretty much anyone could see that accurately from that far away. —valereee (talk) 16:43, 11 June 2020 (UTC)
Ok. Brennan has said he had "super" eyesight for things at a distance (he was farsighted). (Prior to the post-assassination sandblasting accident.) Maybe I'll add a quote from him on that at some point. Thanks.Rja13ww33 (talk) 16:48, 11 June 2020 (UTC)
We can argue how best to use the sources if the article survives AfD. The point of pulling up additional sources, even if they're simply additional sources for what's already there, is to show that there is significant coverage in reliable non-primary sources, which is the rationale the nominator used for AfD. Prove the article is worth keeping first. Then we can argue about details. :) —valereee (talk) 16:55, 11 June 2020 (UTC)
