Public Ivy[edit]

The term public ivy yields 900 Google results. The term is rarely used. The most notable case of use is as the title of a non-influential book. By placing the term in brief introductory sentence, I feel you are giving information that is not worthy too much attention.

Who claims all UC campuses are "public ivies"?

There are 1,655 hits in Google for "Public Ivy" or "Public Ivies", about 13.5 times as many as there are for "Jesuit Ivy" and "Jesuit Ivies". Yet Boston College still features their status as "the Jesuit Ivy" prominantly. Sorry, I don't see a problem with the "Public Ivies" named by Moll displaying that fact prominantly.
As for considering all UC campuses "Public Ivies", I was told that Moll's book specified the entire University of California as such. I was informed of this when I changed the entry for University of California to University of California, Berkeley and it was subsequently changed back.
P.S. - Included in the 1,655 hits for the term are reputable sources such as this and this.

Regardless of Google hits or whatever, I think a valid point here has been made. There is really little reason to say in a brief intro: "It is one of the ten campuses of the University of California (considered "Public Ivy")." The fact that the UC was listed as "Public Ivy" in some books is not so notable as to warrant this special note every time UC is brought up. It's kind of embarassing really. The UC is a recognized university all around the world. It doesn't need to be mentioned as "Public Ivy" to boost its image. I don't know anybody at Davis that throws around that term. It's not a term that I've seen the UC advertise in its propoganda, although I could be wrong.

I've reverted the addition of the term to the UC Davis page, and left the mention on the other campus pages. But I really think you ought to undo those edits. --C S 01:23, 2 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, it appears the Ivy League is viewed perhaps more negatively in California than on the East Coast... I am reverting the "Public Ivy" edits. –Uris 03:51, 2 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Derek Bok once called the UC System as the jewel of the public system of education. I don't like the term public ivies, but something about the quality of the schools would be appropriate.evrik 13:28, 11 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
