Gary Burghoff / actor

Dear United States Man... As a guy who is fairly computer illiterate (me), you can imagine my frustration when trying to "correctly" edit a Wiki page on Gary Burghoff, only to have it undone, twice. I have no idea what "not constructive" implies, as to the reason my two attempts at editing were undone, but Gary is a very good friend of mine, and I am doing this as a favor to him. I co-authored TV's M*A*S*H; The Ultimate Guide Book, and met Gary through my work on that. He has been bothered by the mistake on his Wiki page for some time, as his middle name is, indeed, "Rich", which was his mother's maiden name, and not "Richard". I have no idea why this edit was deemed not constructive, and hope it will be corrected. Mark O'Neill Cartoonistguy47 (talk) 00:59, 7 January 2013 (UTC)

I'm in communication with Gary to see if he mentioned Rich as his mom's maiden name, in his autobiography (put out by the same publisher as my M*A*S*H book). It seems odd to be requesting a reliable, online article as a source when, in fact, such a source seems responsable for the very mistake I'm patiently trying to correct. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cartoonistguy47 (talkcontribs) 01:19, 7 January 2013 (UTC)

United States Man—when you revert someone's edits that are not obvious vandalism, please use an edit summary explaining why. ErikHaugen (talk | contribs) 01:52, 7 January 2013 (UTC)

I just spoke with Gary Burghoff on the phone. I asked him, specifically, if, in his autobiography, he lists his middle name as "Rich" (which is after his mom's maiden name). He said that on page 6, paragraph 4 of To M*A*S*H and Back, by Gary Burghoff (Bearmanor Media), he writes that his mom's name was Ann Rich Burghoff. It does not specifically say it's his middle name, but Gary was quick to point out that nowhere in his autobio did he write that "Richard" is his middle name. In fact, Gary said other online sites devoted to him or MASH have him listed as "Rich" being his middle name, and that Wikipedia is the one that has it wrong. I hope we can resolve this soon, as I am a very tired, stay at home dad. Mark — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cartoonistguy47 (talkcontribs) 01:54, 7 January 2013 (UTC)

...I just checked and saw "Rich". THANK YOU. I'll let Gary know, immediately. However, I don't know if he's aware of it, or what, but IMDB has it wrong, too. No way I'm attempting to work on that one, tonight, no way. Bed time. Ok, listen...thanks. I appreciate the help. Mark O'Neill — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cartoonistguy47 (talkcontribs) 02:05, 7 January 2013 (UTC)

...I like to think of myself as fairly intelligent, certainly creative. But, in trying to send a message to United States Man, I see that one or two of my messages are now public? It's all very confusing. If someone can delete any "public" posts of mine, I'd be grateful. If not, no problem. The problem appears to be resolved, as Gary is now listed correctly, as Gary "Rich" Burghoff. Thank you Cartoonistguy47 (talk) 02:11, 7 January 2013 (UTC)

Note related discussion mentioning your name here. WLU (t) (c) Wikipedia's rules:simple/complex 19:47, 7 January 2013 (UTC)

Now that you, with your own eyes, have seen that Rich is his mother's maiden name, you are still fighting my simple edit. Obviously, somewhere along the line, someone assumed Rich" meant Richard. Not true. I've cited my own book on MASH, from the very same publisher of Gary's book (Bearmanor Media, Ben Ohmart, publisher). Gary did his book specifically because of my connection to that publisher. Last night, I asked Gary, specifically, about the fact that his book says it's his mother's maiden name, but that it doesn't say it's his middle name. His direct reply was this; "The book doesn't say "Richard" is my middle name, either." Nevertheless, I can see you are not going to give up. Neither are we. I have now suggested that Gary, himself, contact both Ben, his publisher, first, then IMDB. Why a 47 year old dad of a son still in ever needing to be changed diapers would go to all of this trouble, on a very simple edit, if it were not true, I don't know. If Gary could simply call someone at Wikipedia and straighten it all out, it would solve everything and remove me from the equation. But, I can find no specific person one contacts for a dispute. I think what's most frightening, as I told Gary, is that getting a site like Wikipedia, or IMDB to print the truth, is harder than getting them to preserve a falsehood. For your own personal information, if you have doubts about me, simply contact Bearmanor Media, and ask if Gary Burghoff knows Mark O'Neill, and tell them I said it's ok to answer. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cartoonistguy47 (talkcontribs) 19:52, 7 January 2013 (UTC)

...I'm also confused as to why there doesn't seem to be any place to leave a "private" message, as I hadn't planned on this becoming a public battle. Once this is settled, I will be deleting these posts of mine, if possible. Originally, I had assumed leaving a message meant it went into a private message box. And I'm also completely out of the loop as to why four squigly dashes are required to sign a post. All of this may seem easy and obvious to those in the know, but to a casual visitor, it's quite complicated. Cartoonistguy47 (talk) 20:06, 7 January 2013 (UTC)

Personal communications are not a reliable source for Wikipedia purposes, see WP:RS. If Mr Burghoff wants this corrected, he should use the process set out at WP:BIOSELF to contact Wikipedia.--ukexpat (talk) 20:08, 7 January 2013 (UTC)

Finding a way to communicate with a specific person on this site is nearly impossible, unless you are a computer whiz, I assume. But, since interested parties seem to find my messages, wherever I inadvertantly leave them, I'll leave this final one, here. As a minor note, Gary does not want "R." put as his middle name, as he is very proud of the "Rich" family name. Secondly, I'm going to enlist the aide of someone who knows Wikipedia and all of it's means of communications, far more than I do, as this has become needlessly impossible, despite my understanding that anyone could say they know a celebrity. In my opinion, I backed up my relationship as friend with plenty of avenues with which to verify. Finally, if I were going to add some slanderous information, or make a completely absurd edit, I could see the fuss. But changing Richard to Rich, with several deatiled explanations as to why, and then at least one volunteer editor saw, with his or her own eyes that the maiden name in question was in fact "Rich" (which proves nothing but certainly adds weight to my argument), all seems so unworthy of this battle. Onward to other avenues. Just as an aside, let's assume I'm 100% valid in my points. Imagine how frustrating it is for a guy like Gary, who's hearing through me that, no, your middle name is not what you thought it was, it's now Richard. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cartoonistguy47 (talkcontribs) 20:25, 7 January 2013 (UTC)

The best place to discuss your concern is at the biography of living persons noticeboard. There is an active section currently discussing the issue here. This was pointed out on your talk page. WLU (t) (c) Wikipedia's rules:simple/complex 20:33, 7 January 2013 (UTC)

...I have contacted support at one of the links you posted, and asked how Gary can contact Wikipedia, directly. Certainly, I can see the need for verification, but this is maddening. I will not be re-editing, again, until and unless I have so-called reliable sources, even though I feel I've satisfied that requirement for such a small, simple edit. I also will be deleting any posts of mine that I can, except this one, as these were posted publicly, inadvertantly. My assumption was that "leaving a message" meant it went to a private inbox. Not so, unfortunately. Personally, I find this sort of frightening, that a massive site can have no "clear" means of private communication with a person actually in charge, to resolve an issue that, in short, can be summed up as an indifferent computer site and several unknown editors telling a man that what is actually true, is not. Frightening. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cartoonistguy47 (talkcontribs) 20:54, 7 January 2013 (UTC)

Cartoonist, I totally understand everything you're saying here. A lot of people sort of don't give the benefit of the doubt to new editors. There are a lot of vandals that do drive-by defacing of these articles, inserting innocuous but wrong details, so I think some people get jaded by that. It's no excuse, but it's true, and I'm sorry this happened to you here. A note about messages: "private communication with a person actually in charge"—nobody is really in charge! We just hash things out in the appropriate venues and usually reason prevails. Usually. Don't worry about this particular issue; I'll make sure it gets sorted out. Regarding private messages; there is usually a link on people's pages saying "E-mail this user" (But United States Man has not opted in for this feature, so there is no way to privately message him.) Regarding private messages, if United States Man is agreeable I'm sure we can just erase these sections here from this talk page; is that ok? ErikHaugen (talk | contribs) 21:21, 7 January 2013 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) Actually, I think those of us involved in this issue have been more than helpful in trying to get it resolved and, at least as far as I am concerned, I resent the implication to the contrary.--ukexpat (talk) 21:27, 7 January 2013 (UTC)
Beg pardon. I'm referring to a.) the confusing nature of this place: where to send messages, how to send private messages, etc and b.) the fact that the edit was twice reverted with no edit summary despite not being obvious vandalism. Frankly, initially at least, this new editor was treated like a vandal. I did not mean to imply that you were anything but super-helpful, ukexpat, and I'm sorry my comment made it sound that way. 1974 tornado (Tanner #2, Super Outbreak)—F4 or F5?

I just realized that you have since emailed the National Weather Service about the discrepancy and that the official response is that the tornado is ranked F4. That seems strange, because the official Storm Prediction Center Storm Data databases (both here and here) list the second Tanner tornado on April 3, 1974, as being F5 in intensity. The second link in particular comes straight from the SPC and is current as of March 23, 2012, and there have not been any changes to the historical database in some years. Here is what the second link says:

The 1974 outbreak still holds the record for the most F5 tornadoes with seven, as opposed to four in the 2011 event.

The seventh F5 tornado would be the second Tanner event. Interestingly, regarding the 24-hour total of tornadoes in the Super Outbreak, the second link also states:

This supplanted the "Super Outbreak" of 147 [not the widely-quoted 148!] known U. S. tornadoes on 3-4 April, 1974.

Finally, the latest CSV version of the official NOAA tornado database, available here, not only lists the second Tanner tornado as being F5 in intensity, but also gives a 24-hour total of 147 tornadoes for the Super Outbreak. The Severe Plot database, which relies upon the same official data, also assigns both the second Tanner F5 rating and the 147-tornado total between each 12 UTC on 03–04 April 1974, a period of 24 hours. According to SPC, second link:

SPC typically uses the 24-hour "convective day" starting and ending at 12 UTC (7 a.m. CDT).

All these sources are current as of 2012 and all concur with the F5 rating for the second Tanner tornado as well as 147, not 148, tornadoes in the Super Outbreak. All the sources which do not rate the second Tanner tornado as being F5 either seem to be out-of-date or representative of independent, unofficial opinion, like that of Thomas P. Grazulis in his Significant Tornadoes histories, which rank the second Tanner tornado at F4 status (which may be what the Birmingham office used to assign the F4 rather than F5 rating, especially if some local meteorologists independently disputed the official F5 rating).

Nevertheless, for the sake of credibility, would it not be most prudent to go with the F5 rating for the second Tanner tornado, as the views of some NWS offices still do not represent the official word? CapeVerdeWave (talk) 21:01, 17 January 2013 (UTC)

WikiCup 2013 January newsletter

Signups are now closed; we have our final 127 contestants for this year's competition. 64 contestants will make it to the next round at the end of February, but we're already seeing strong scoring compared to previous years. Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) currently leads, with 358 points. At this stage in 2012, the leader (Irish Citizen Army Grapple X (submissions)) had 342 points, while in 2011, the leader had 228 points. We also have a large number of scorers when compared with this stage in previous years. Florida 12george1 (submissions) was the first competitor to score this year, as he was last year, with a detailed good article review. Some other firsts:

Featured articles, portals and topics, as well as good topics, are yet to feature in the competition.

This year, the bonus points system has been reworked, with bonus points on offer for old articles prepared for did you know, and "multiplier" points reworked to become more linear. For details, please see Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring. There have been some teething problems as the bot has worked its way around the new system, but issues should mostly be ironed out- please report any problems to the WikiCup talk page. Here are some participants worthy of note with regards to the bonus points:

  • United States Ed! (submissions) was the first to score bonus points, with Portland-class cruiser, a good article.
  • Australia Hawkeye7 (submissions) has the highest overall bonus points, as well as the highest scoring article, thanks to his work on Enrico Fermi, now a good article. The biography of such a significant figure to the history of science warrants nearly five times the normal score.
  • Chicago HueSatLum (submissions) claimed bonus points for René Vautier and Nicolas de Fer, articles that did not exist on the English Wikipedia at the start of the year; a first for the WikiCup. The articles were eligible for bonus points because of fact they were both covered on a number of other Wikipedias.

Also, a quick mention of British Empire The C of E (submissions), who may well have already written the oddest article of the WikiCup this year: did you know that the Fucking mayor objected to Fucking Hell on the grounds that there was no Fucking brewery? The gauntlet has been thrown down; can anyone beat it?

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Tornado map

Hello United States Man,

I guess you are the one who created the page of tornado data, I sure do appreciate it.

Seeing the GPS coordinates I decided to try to find a way to map them, since some find that useful, I know I do.

You can see the map at http://batchgeo.com/map/7e2d231eb714661c93a17bf3aa77a930

Did you look at the map before deleting the link to it? Didn't like it? May I ask what you found objectionable?

Can you tell me where your data came from please?

Would be great to hear from you.

I created it, using your data. Please consider taking the first spreadsheet: http://sellerline.com/bin/tornados_of_2013.xls ...and make it available to whomever might be willing to keep it updated. They would simply input latest new data into the spreadsheet, select all, paste over the data in the field at the top of http://batchgeo.com/ which will create the map and provide the new URL, then you can just use that URL on your page. :) (Sorry my mind is scrambled eggs over this Wikipedia system, and busy, so it would be better if someone more dedicated take the reins of the map). WikiCup 2013 February newsletter

Round 1 is now over. The top 64 scorers have progressed to round 2, where they have been randomly split into eight pools of eight. At the end of April, the top two from each pool, as well as the 16 highest scorers from those remaining, will progress to round 3. Commiserations to those eliminated; if you're interested in still being involved in the WikiCup, able and willing reviewers will always be needed, and if you're interested in getting involved with other collaborative projects, take a look at the WikiWomen's Month discussed below.

Round 1 saw 21 competitors with over 100 points, which is fantastic; that suggests that this year's competition is going to be highly competative. Our lower scores indicate this, too: A score of 19 was required to reach round 2, which was significantly higher than the 11 points required in 2012 and 8 points required in 2011. The score needed to reach round 3 will be higher, and may depend on pool groupings. In 2011, 41 points secured a round 3 place, while in 2012, 65 was needed. Our top three scorers in round 1 were:

  1. Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), primarily for an array of warship GAs.
  2. London Miyagawa (submissions), primarily for an array of did you knows and good articles, some of which were awarded bonus points.
  3. New South Wales Casliber (submissions), due in no small part to Canis Minor, a featured article awarded a total of 340 points. A joint submission with Alaska Keilana (submissions), this is the highest scoring single article yet submitted in this year's competition.

Other contributors of note include:

Featured topics have still played no part in this year's competition, but once again, a curious contribution has been offered by British Empire The C of E (submissions): did you know that there is a Shit Brook in Shropshire? With April Fools' Day during the next round, there will probably be a good chance of more unusual articles...

March sees the WikiWomen's History Month, a series of collaborative efforts to aid the women's history WikiProject to coincide with Women's History Month and International Women's Day. A number of WikiCup participants have already started to take part. The project has a to-do list of articles needing work on the topic of women's history. Those interested in helping out with the project can find articles in need of attention there, or, alternatively, add articles to the list. Those interested in collaborating on articles on women's history are also welcome to use the WikiCup talk page to find others willing to lend a helping hand. Another collaboration currently running is an an effort from WikiCup participants to coordinate a number of Easter-themed did you know articles. Contributions are welcome!

A few final administrative issues. From now on, submission pages will need only a link to the article and a link to the nomination page, or, in the case of good article reviews, a link to the review only. See your submissions' page for details. This will hopefully make updating submission pages a little less tedious. Good luck! "The more now, the less to do later"

39 bytes of information is hardly doing "more now", especially when you keep changing the lap count, as well as the potential for someone else to end up with most laps led (155 laps left, other drivers have 85/60/58 laps led). TheChrisD RantsEdits 19:14, 17 March 2013 (UTC)

Would like an opinion

I think I might put the article from my sandbox up, but am wondering about one thing. Grazulis lists a killer F3 tornado in Louisiana on March 19, the day before the major violent tornado activity started. The general description for the outbreak, though, is with the first significant tornado of March 20. It isn't the only time Grazulis described an outbreak on the nentry for a tornado that wasn't the first of its outbreak. Some am I safe in including it in the outbreak article? WikiCup 2013 March newsletter

We are halfway through round two. Pool A sees the strongest competition, with five out of eight of its competitors scoring over 100, and Pool H is lagging, with half of its competitors yet to score. WikiCup veterans lead overall; Pool A's Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) (2010's winner) leads overall, with poolmate London Miyagawa (submissions) (a finalist in 2011 and 2012) not far behind. Pool F's New South Wales Casliber (submissions) (a finalist in 2010, 2011 and 2012) is in third. The top two scorers in each pool, as well as the next highest 16 scorers overall, will progress to round three at the end of April.

Today has seen a number of Easter-themed did you knows from WikiCup participants, and March has seen collaboration from contestants with WikiWomen's History Month. It's great to see the WikiCup being used as a locus of collaboration; if you know of any collaborative efforts going on, or want to start anything up, please feel free to use the WikiCup talk page to help find interested editors. As well as fostering collaboration, we're also seeing the Cup encouraging the improvement of high-importance articles through the bonus point system. Highlights from the last month include GAs on physicist Niels Bohr (Australia Hawkeye7 (submissions)), on the European hare (Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions)), on the constellation Circinus (Alaska Keilana (submissions) and New South Wales Casliber (submissions)) and on the Third Epistle of John (Indiana Cerebellum (submissions)). All of these subjects were covered on at least 50 Wikipedias at the beginning of the year and, subsequently, each contribution was awarded at least three times as many points as normal.

Wikipedians who enjoy friendly competition may be interested in participating in April's wikification drive. While wikifying an article is typically not considered "significant work" such that it can be claimed for WikiCup points, such gnomish work is often invaluable in keeping articles in shape, and is typically very helpful for new writers who may not be familiar with formatting norms.

A quick reminder: now, submission pages will need only a link to the article and a link to the nomination page, or, in the case of good article reviews, a link to the review only. See your submissions' page for details. This will hopefully make updating submission pages a little less tedious. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Too Specific?

Too specific? That summary was no more specific than the others. Important details such as when the tornadoes reached peak intensity and what occurred there were left for no reason. It was a confusing passage. You left big gaps in what EF intensity was in certain parts, or the towns they were near or impacted. That is perfectly relevant information directly from the official NWS survey, that deserves a place on wikipedia. Read they surveys please! There is no "flow" being disturbed here. I admit, I thought the fire hydrant thing was in the source posted but it wasn't. Other than that it is all there. Check them yourself please. If you want it to say pavement that is fine though, that is pretty trivial. Other than that, as long the info is relevant to the topic and sourced from a reliable official page, there is no reason to revert it. Edits to 1998 Nashville tornado outbreak

Hello United States Man. Just dropping you a note to let you know I had to revert some of your edits to 1998 Nashville tornado outbreak. The edits did not provide sources to let others verify the information, and in some cases the new information contradicted the sources that were already provided in the article. For example, the number of tornadoes that passed through Nashville is given as 3 in the sources, but you changed it to 2 without providing a new source. Same for the duration in the infobox. If you have sources that provide more accurate information, please add them to the article at the same time that you update the information, per the verifiability policy. Thanks! Kaldari (talk) 05:45, 10 April 2013 (UTC)

You still haven't provided sources for the examples that I gave above. The article now says that 2 tornadoes passed through Nashville, but the cited source clearly says 3.[6] And where is the source for the duration of the storm? Kaldari (talk) 05:11, 11 April 2013 (UTC)

Manual archiving

My deletion of material on the talk page wasn't a deletion, it was copied over to the archive as those topics were already completely resolved. We have to keep the talk page trim, else those who access with a smartphone or tablet won't be able to read due to the length. This is a pretty standard process for highly active articles. This is why I'm not editing the actual article, so I'm free to just clerk the talk page and answer questions. Dennis Brown - © Join WER 12:19, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

List of United States tornadoes from January to February 2012

I've reverted the List of United States tornadoes from January to February 2012 back to the format that TheAustinMan. The format he provided it with made it a more useful article than the current bare-bones format every other list supplies. It gives an overall summary of the time period the list covers and provides some meteorological info. It's a far better way to represent the info than the way the others are. All the other lists seem to be is a place to dump tornado info that isn't included on the main "Tornadoes of ####" article. Cyclonebiskit (talk) 17:34, 17 April 2013 (UTC)

I would like to ask why the damage statistics found in the tables themselves were removed. Though the reason was apparently for being "trivial" and "unnecessary," I found them relevant; after all, the column's header is appropriately titled for it: "Comments/Damage". Tornadoes of 2013

The event that happened from the 24th to the 29th was much larger than it looked. There were many tornado warnings on April 27 heading into the evening, and tornado and wind damage in Fayette County, TN was much more than anyone would think. I saw a picture on the Weather Channel, and whole houses were knocked down as well as many power poles and trees. If you read this message, please consider letting me keep that section in the article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ManhattanSandyFurystorm (talkcontribs) 14:17, 5 May 2013 (UTC)

First of all, there were only two systems, not three. Second of all, over 85% of the damage in Fayette County was from the tornado, and about 15% from the wind, even if the wind did do a lot of damage. Two tornado warnings had been posted for the tornado. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ManhattanSandyFurystorm (talkcontribs) 14:34, 5 May 2013 (UTC)

WikiCup 2013 April newsletter

We are a week into Round 3, but it is off to a flying start, with Republic of Rose Island Sven Manguard (submissions) claiming for the high-importance Portal:Sports and Portal:Geography (which are the first portals ever awarded bonus points in the WikiCup) and Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) claiming for a did you know of sea, the highest scoring individual did you know article ever submitted for the WikiCup. Round 2 saw very impressive scores at close; first place New South Wales Casliber (submissions) and second place Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) both scored over 1000 points; a feat not seen in Round 2 since 2010. This, in part, has been made possible by the change in the bonus points rules, but is also testament to the quality of the competition this year. Pool C and Pool G were most competitive, with three quarters of participants making it to Round 3, while Pool D was the least, with only the top two scorers making it through. The lowest qualifying score was 123, significantly higher than last year's 65, 2011's 41 or even 2010's 100.

The next issue of The Signpost is due to include a brief update on the current WikiCup, comparing it to previous years' competitions. This may be of interest to current WikiCup followers, and may help bring some more new faces into the community. We would also like to note that this round includes an extra competitor to the 32 advertised, who has been added to a random pool. This extra inclusion seems to have been the fairest way to deal with a small mistake made before the beginning of this round, but should not affect the competition in a large way. If you have any questions or concerns about this, please feel free to contact one of the judges.

A rules clarification: content promoted between rounds can be claimed in the round after the break, but not the round before. The case in point is content promoted on 29/30 April, which may be claimed in this round. Good luck! List of United States tornadoes from January to February 2012‎

I'm not sure what is so hard to understand. There is no strong consensus for either TAM's proposal or yours regarding whether there should be a lede or a season summary section. Therefore, the article is to remain the way it was prior to either proposal. You don't get to choose yours just because. And by the way, it's not vandalism, and I'm well aware of the 3RR rule. TropicalAnalystwx13 (talk) 23:46, 12 May 2013 (UTC)

Have you even checked my revisions before reverting them. I made it clear in my edit summary that I reverted PRIOR to your revision OR TAM's revision. Meaning there is no summary section and the lede is still one sentence. Not sure what the problem is here. TropicalAnalystwx13 (talk) 02:05, 13 May 2013 (UTC)
No problem, everybody makes mistakes. Just glad it's solved. TropicalAnalystwx13 (talk) 02:09, 13 May 2013 (UTC)

2013 Bangladesh tornado

I merged the content of the article into the main 2013 article since it creates an unnecessary content fork. The information easily fits within the main article and causes no issues. As a stand-alone, it's essentially a useless stub that's further away from the average reader's eye - people are less inclined to keep following links to get info. Cyclonebiskit (talk) 22:52, 16 May 2013 (UTC)

Tornadoes of 2013

I don't want to start up an edit war so I'm avoiding reverting again. If you're going to refer back to older tornado year articles please pay note to the quality of them. The further back you go, the worse they get. Formats change over the years as better ways of representing the information are put together. The addition of so many unnecessary headings makes the article more difficult to navigate for the average reader. It ends up creating excessive whitespace when the information can easily be put into a single paragraph at the start summarizing the information. There's no need for one sentence sections, and it's best to avoid those. Cyclonebiskit (talk) 23:30, 16 May 2013 (UTC)

Edit reversion

Hello. I made an edit on the May 18–20, 2013 tornado outbreak article page, but I saw that you reverted it. I thought that moving the link to the front of the row would be better in terms of formatting and information access, but I'd like to hear your opinion as to why you reverted my edit. In the future, please make an effort to explain your reverts, as they're quite helpful as feedback. Thanks. Prayerfortheworld (talk) 00:58, 21 May 2013 (UTC)

Removing references

When removing references with the name parameter inside of <ref> filled, please make sure that you replace the reference information further down in the article, otherwise it breaks references, like in this edit. Thanks! Inks.LWC (talk) 00:51, 22 May 2013 (UTC)

Please source content

Since I know where you got the information and you're not one to add unverifiable material, I've left it be for now but please be sure to properly source information when you add it. This edit to the 2013 Moore tornado is entirely unsourced as it is not backed up by the Public Information Statement from NWS Norman. Since this is such a high-trafficked article at the moment, we need to be extra careful with unsourced information that could lead to misconceptions and possibly cause loss of credibility in the article. Best regards, Cyclonebiskit (talk) 16:30, 22 May 2013 (UTC)

It's a matter of having properly sourced material in the article. All information on the site needs to be verified, which I could not do for that edit. I know you had good intentions with that edit but you have to source your additions. If you cannot source it at the time, just wait until the surveys are done, the article isn't going anywhere :) Cyclonebiskit (talk) 16:47, 22 May 2013 (UTC)
Basically what I'm trying to get at is please add in some references when you add material. That's all I'm asking for here. Cyclonebiskit (talk) 16:53, 22 May 2013 (UTC)

May 17th TX tornadoes

I'm currently working on revamping the entire meteorological synopsis of the May 18-21 outbreak and going through its entire history. While working on May 17, I found that the system was at least partly the cause of the storms in Texas. It's responsible for the northerly flow of moisture that collided with a dry line in the region, though the system itself was just moving out of the Rockies. How do you think we should treat those tornadoes? Since there were only two, it's technically not an outbreak so we couldn't call the 17th part of the overall outbreak event, but it was related. Cyclonebiskit (talk) 17:51, 22 May 2013 (UTC)

Alright, that sounds good. I'll just have them mentioned in the synopsis section then. I just finished up details for the 16th and 17th and most of the 18th so that'll be up soon. Cyclonebiskit (talk) 18:16, 22 May 2013 (UTC)

Tornado tables

Please explain to me how properly using in-line citations to source information and using local time zones (which is already used by the article to begin with) "does not work". Not everything has to work by your preconceived conception of a "standard" for these articles. I'm trying to portray the information in the most appropriate manner and provide the proper means for people to easily find where that information was taken from. I get that the way you want to have it makes it easiest for you to update the tables, but that does not necessarily mean it's the most effective way of relaying information. Sometimes you have to take a little extra time (it's what, maybe 20 extra seconds to convert a few a few things and fill out a proper citation) to make the tables better. In the case of the May 18–21, 2013 tornado outbreak, CDT is a more appropriate time zone to use as it is the time zone where the vast majority of tornadoes took place and allows the reader to more easily understand the time of day it took place over UTC. CDT is already used as a medium within the meteorological synopsis so there is no reason for it not to be used within the tables. Cyclonebiskit (talk) 17:35, 24 May 2013 (UTC)

A reference being dead is no reason for removal. WP:DEADREF states, "Dead links should be repaired or replaced if possible. Do not delete a citation merely because the URL is not working today." NCDC links can be repaired by pointing to the Storm Data Publication page, so using {{deadlink}} would be more appropriate than outright removal.

As an aside, "duplication at the bottom" is not a valid excuse for removal of citations. There is nothing on WP:WHYCITE that supports your position. The only exception that is mentioned is the article's lede (and there is none in this case), and even in that case, WP:V and WP:LEDE encourage a "if in doubt, cite" approach. Re: New Formatting

Yup! I should be done with the May 18-21 outbreak within an hour (just gotta format all the references properly and gather details on dissipation/width. Those with NCDC details should be relatively easy to update in comparison to the more recent ones. Cyclonebiskit (talk) 20:18, 25 May 2013 (UTC)

There's still a lot of testing with this going on so I'm open to tweaking it :P I'll removing the "abbr" from the path width but as for the length and time, I think it helps having the same time (for consistency) and noting the track length as "brief" (especially if that's what's stated by the NWS). I only add brief if there's only a single point given on a track (like from NWS Wichita) or the report states brief (NWS Dodge City), otherwise I leave it as "unknown." Cyclonebiskit (talk) 20:40, 25 May 2013 (UTC)
Scratch the no abbr thing, it's causing awkward stretching in that column when there are larger comment sections. Cyclonebiskit (talk) 20:57, 25 May 2013 (UTC)

Reference URLs

Just as a friendly reminder, if you're updating a reference that uses a link from webcitation.org, please replace it with an updated version from that site. I use those to prevent dead linking from taking place before the NCDC storm summaries come out a few months from now. Many reports from the NWS over overwritten as new events take place (though major events such as Oklahoma are there permanently). It's just another way of ensuring that we can keep the information verifiable. Cyclonebiskit (talk) 05:39, 26 May 2013 (UTC)

Just remember to use those links in the references then :) I saw some were put back to the unstable NWS ones (St. Louis namely) a little bit ago Cyclonebiskit (talk) 05:47, 26 May 2013 (UTC)
The one I noticed right away was the Mount Olive survey. I had it at an archived URL earlier in the day and it's been changed to the unstable "first survey" URL of NWS St. Louis http://www.crh.noaa.gov/lsx/?n=survey1 Cyclonebiskit (talk) 05:53, 26 May 2013 (UTC)
It's not uncommon for the NWS to let info slip on the web. One example that comes to mind is from the April 9-11, 2011 outbreak. NWS Des Moines had a similar page up for the tornadoes in their area, with multiple survey maps, radar imagery, and text products. That page has ceased to exist. The concern is that it's a very generic URL, one that is frequently overwritten. I would not be surprised if the next time St. Louis has a survey that page is overwritten. Moore

Briarwood fatality was later confirmed by a sheriff. YOU are the one who needs to research. Initial report of no fatalities there was false. The Orr farm entry needed fixing as someone had it listed in the completely wrong area, even though it is clearly (google is your friend) right across the field from Briarwood in Moore. And no, Briarwood was not the first to experience the large swath of EF4, Orr was. Once again, look at the NWS survey map contours. I can't possibly begin to fathom how you feel that is incorrect since it is a verifiable fact. All of my additional statements can be backed up by the crisis map put together by NWS Norman. Stop acting like you run this website. I have discussed this with others and I am not the only one who feels this way. Cut it out, for all of the users of this website. Sharkguy05 (talk) 00:07, 27 May 2013 (UTC)Sharkguy05

I've re-added the mention of the Briarwood fatality. It is explicitly stated in the reference that Sharkguy provided that "One child was killed at Briarwood Elementary School, elsewhere in Moore, said police Sgt. Jeremy Lewis." Short of a reliable source suggesting otherwise, there's no reason to question its reliability. GorillaWarfare (talk) 00:18, 27 May 2013 (UTC)
Aaand I've removed it again, after finding a source that reads, "A teacher at Briarwood Elementary told News 9's Karl Torp that students and staff took shelter before the storm struck in hallways and under their decks. There were some minor injuries but all students were accounted for." Since it's so unclear, it's probably wise to leave it out. GorillaWarfare (talk) 00:25, 27 May 2013 (UTC)

OK I agree leaving it for now would be best, at least until there is further clarification. I would like to point out though that the source you used is outdated, as it was published before total death toll had even been figured out yet (article lists it at 37). The Briarwood fatality(?) was discovered after the death toll had been lowered. There are multiple more recently published sources that state that a fatality did indeed occur there. Sharkguy05 (talk) 00:32, 27 May 2013 (UTC)Sharkguy05

Can you provide these sources? So far the NBC source is the only one indicating a fatality at Briarwood; many others clearly state that everyone survived. That said, it's true that some of them are a bit old and could be outdated. GorillaWarfare (talk) 00:40, 27 May 2013 (UTC)

The WHDH source cites the Sergeant from the NBC article, so I don't think I'd count that as another source. The TulsaWorld source makes no mention of a death at Briarwood. The other two are legitimate, though. USM, what are your thoughts on a "some sources say X, others say Y" approach? GorillaWarfare (talk) 01:04, 27 May 2013 (UTC)

Tulsaworld had a quote, but since I posted it, it has been removed and replaced with a quote regarding supposed basement drowning. Makes me think it might be false then... Sharkguy05 (talk) 01:14, 27 May 2013 (UTC)Sharkguy05

Fan site claim

I just want to explain my reasoning behind adding the site as an external link. I do agree that fan sites are unreliable, but treating all fan sites the same integrity wise is unsettling. I have examined the site more times than a couple and use the site regularly to keep up-to-date on the airing of new Spongebob episodes. It has been shown to backup their claims with evidence from other noteworthy sites and has done good in becoming an informative site. I do not know if you have used the site personally, but I believe if you took the time to reexamine the information presented from the site, you would realize that it is more than people talking about what they love about Spongebob. So, in conclusion, I would ask that you reevaluate the site, backup your claim with presentable evidence against the site, and show that it is not a trustworthy source in gaining material.

Here is the link that was removed: http://www.sbmania.net/episodes.php

MOS:NUMERAL and 2013 El Reno tornado

I've wasted too much time arguing the MOS lately, and I've always found you to be a reasonable editor on the various articles I've seen you on...so bringing this up here rather than just reverting the edit. :)

"Nine fatalities and up to 115 injuries" needs to either be "9 ... and 115", or "nine ... and one-hundred fifteen" (the latter of which is obviously silly.) See MOS:NUMERAL, the second rule about comparable quantities (the "cats and dogs" example.) Fatalities and injuries are comparable quantities, thus we need to use numbers for both in this instance. – 2001:db8:: (rfc | diff) 01:58, 6 June 2013 (UTC)

(And for what it's worth, I'm not a huge fan of that particular MOS guideline myself; I'd personally write "nine and 115" in real-world usage off WP.) – 2001:db8:: (rfc | diff) 02:08, 6 June 2013 (UTC)

Enough is enough

I have really had it with what has been going on here. This "control freak" attitude has got to stop, and trust me, I am not the only one that thinks that here. You seem to think you run the place, and have not given any reasoning to most of your revisions (and trying to do it under the table under the generic edit summary of "fixes"). My point being, you seems that you are incapable of realizing that you CANNOT revert sourced material just because YOU don't like the way it looks. This is a website for everyone to pitch in, not for one user to dictate. As long as my posts are sourced and relevant, you can't delete them okay? Please, don't immediately fire back with a fiery reply on my talk page, just try to think about what am trying to say here and give it some thought. Sharkguy05 (talk) 03:56, 8 June 2013 (UTC)Sharkguy05

Hateful? No, I don't feel any personal resentment toward you. Frustrated? Yes, very much so. I realize you aren't the only one at fault. Yeah, sometimes i'm a little lazy with the sourcing I admit, but you deleting "what you deem unnecessary" is the problem. My additions to the Edgar tornado and others like it are 100% relevant. Wikipedia tornado pages are some of the most informative you can fine, and im my opinion, the best detailed summaries you can find on tornado events besides Grazulis. A lot of specific, detailed information about certain tornadoes has been lost to time, and I don't want that happening here with current events. For example, even though they occurred in 1974, there is basically no available detailed information on the Guin and Tanner tornadoes. I really had to dig deep to get a basic picture of what happened there specifically. I don't want that kind of thing happening on these pages, so please, realize there is nothing wrong with detail. I will compromise and source more carefully. Sharkguy05 (talk) 04:31, 8 June 2013 (UTC)Sharkguy05

Exactly, so compromise needs to be an option here. Regarding NCDC, they sometimes leave out major details, such as the extreme damage that occurred in Smithville, MS. Sharkguy05 (talk) 04:43, 8 June 2013 (UTC)Sharkguy05

Please do not continue your constant reverting. You've already violated WP:3RR and continued action will be considered intentionally disruptive. Talk it out with the other editor before continuing to edit the January 29–30, 2013 tornado outbreak. Cyclonebiskit (talk) 04:46, 8 June 2013 (UTC)

Tornado summaries

I always appreciate your work with the tornado summaries (honestly I get lazy while updating and only include the major points). However, I think you went a bit overboard with the recent one in Kentucky :P That tornado alone accounts for about 2.4 kb of text, an extreme amount relative to the notability of that tornado. I know all the information available allows for such detailed summaries, but could you try and keep them within reason? If you could trim it down to maybe the same size as the June 2 Anderson, SC tornado that would be perfect. Thanks again! Cyclonebiskit (talk) 12:56, 12 June 2013 (UTC)

Redirects on racer infoboxes

The reason redirects are used on NASCAR driver infoboxes instead of piped links is that it simplifies the template, allows the 'What Links Here' on the redirect link to show which relevant pages point to it, and also because race names change often so it removes the issue of the piped link becoming 'out of date'. - The Bushranger One ping only 01:52, 16 June 2013 (UTC)

Article entitled "Margaret Mutu"

Warm Greetings from New Zealand,

Can I please ask why you have undone the corrections made to the article on Professor Margaret Mutu currently showing on Wikipedia?

Please forgive me if this is a presumptuous question - I am new to Wikipedia. I have tried to adhere to the Wikipedia policy regarding Biographies of Living Persons. I ask only because Professor Mutu is a living person and she has authorised me to correct the article that has been written about her.

I would greatly appreciate your response.

Ngati Kahu (talk) 01:52, 17 June 2013 (UTC)Ngati Kahu

Thanks you for your message about adding references. Are you able to please add in the following references about Professor Mutu's academic background and qualifications as I am no longer able to access the editing capability. http://artsfaculty.auckland.ac.nz/staff/?UPI=mmut003&Name=Margaret%20Mutu

Can I also perhaps ask whether you consider the article to be neutral as required by the Biographies of Living Persons policy. In this part of the world, New Zealand, such an article would read as a direct attack on the person named. I understand that Wikipedia policy is not to allow such articles.

Can you also please advise whether Professor Mutu, as the subject of the article, is able to have the article about her removed?

re: Article entitled "Margaret Mutu"

Greetings once again,

Thank you for commencing inquiries and an RfC on this.

Unfortunately I cannot access a talk page for user name Charmlet that allows me to respond to her request to identify "direct attack on person named" so that she can fix it.

I hope you don't mind if I list some of them here and maybe you can pass them on to Charmlet:

Professor Mutu is not an "activist". In New Zealand, that is a derogatory term. Others label her as that (and the reference given is to those attacking her). She is a Māori leader and an academic. Professor Mutu is not from Auckland, New Zealand. She is from Karikari, Far North, New Zealand. She works at the University of Auckland in Auckland, New Zealand. Professor Mutu is not "chairperson of the Ngāti Kahu runanga executive". There is no such body. She is the chairperson of Te Rūnanga-ā-Iwi o Ngāti Kahu, the traditional council of representatives of the Ngāti Kahu iwi or nation. The fourth paragraph of the article quotes the opinions of a number of individuals who have misquoted and attacked Professor Mutu through the media for speaking on behalf of her iwi. In New Zealand, Māori who speak out in defence of their people are usually attacked. However academics such as Professor Mutu are protected statutorily from such attacks - hence the use of Wikipedia to air their attacks. The misquotes led to complaints to the Race Relations Commissioner but the article does not say that those complaints were all dismissed. The fifth paragraph results from the attacks in paragraph 4.

My humblest apologies if sending you this is inappropriate.

Professor Mutu has indicated that if this is all too hard then she will go through the process provided to have the article about her (which she had no part in writing) removed from Wikipedia. I presume that she commences that by contacting the administrators - is that correct?

Thank you for your patience.

"Freyja" in Freamunde, Portugal

From "http://www.cm-pacosdeferreira.pt/VSD/PacosFerreira/vPT/Publica/OConcelho/AsFreguesias/Freguesia8/Hist%C3%B3ria+da+Freguesia/", the municipal authority's site.: "Freamunde é um nome milenário.

I had already made reference to one of this sites. I am new in Wiki and must ask you or another user more used to all this to please insert these. I could translate it, but I am actually out of time right now.

Have a great weekend! And thank you! Ulrico Vulfe. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.241.98.153 (talk) 03:37, 22 June 2013 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for June 23

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Johnsonville Sausage 200, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Billy Johnson and Michael McDowell (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Speedy deletion declined: I Gusti Ketut Pudja

Hello United States Man. Just fyi, it appears that User:Ivander12 has removed the PROD from many of his pages that you tagged. Any thoughts on how to proceed?

Uberaccount (talk) 02:49, 24 June 2013 (UTC)

PROD vs. AFD

PROD can only be attempted once, and "If anybody objects to the deletion (usually by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} tag - see full instructions below), the proposal is aborted and may not be re-proposed." - see the linked policy. AFD nominations should not be removed (see that policy). As I mentioned elsewhere, I'm trying to clean up this mess. Having to remove unhelpful prods is slowing that process.  — Crisco 1492 (talk) 03:08, 24 June 2013 (UTC)

Regarding http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Enhanced_Fujita_scale&diff=560345330&oldid=560344592 it seems like there was prior consensus that if a NWS documented example of EF5 damage was produced, the EF5 pic could be updated. I had cited the NWS documents where they identified the damage to Briarwood Elementary as EF5 with my edits, and don't understand the revert. Shouldn't a cite be dispositive?--Drf5n (talk) 19:43, 24 June 2013 (UTC)

OK, you're definetely right about 140 degrees- that said "Suspect" for quality control, but believe it or not, I saw 133 degrees at OK, thereby making the June record 133. Thanks, ManhattanSandyFurystorm (talk) 20:00, 30 June 2013 (UTC)
