Why are you creating Category:Star when Category:Stars already exists? -- Curps 07:48, 24 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I'm so sorry - Here's my problem:

A star is a giant ball of gas in space. However, Stars is a well-known band from Montreal

I'd like to create an entry for this band, but currently the Stars entry redirects to Star. A bunch of other entries link to Stars, and I am in the process of changing those links so that they go to star instead.

Additionally, I found the Stars category. The main article of this category should be Star, since Stars is just a redirect page. But with the catmore tag, I didn't see a way to do this, unless I disregard the catmore tag and instead just enter it manually. Is that ok to do?

Do you have any more suggestions?

There's a common mechanism in Wikipedia for dealing with things that have the same name. See for instance, Mercury (element) and Mercury (planet). So you should create your page at Stars (band).

The Category:Stars is not the same thing as the page Stars. The category is for classifying things that are stars (or for sub-categories which classify things that are stars).

Oh that's great!

Now, someone types in "stars" and they get redirected to "star." Is there something that I can put on the Star page that will redirect people who were actually looking for the band?

I added a standard notice at the top of Star for the band.

In general, there are various ways to deal with disambiguation. In some cases, like Mercury the chemical element and Mercury the planet, the two are equally important, so the Mercury page is just a disambiguation page. In other cases, one usage is more common than the others so the page goes directly to it instead of serving as a disambiguation page, and a separate "X (disambiguation)" page is created. I was having a little difficulty with that. I didn't know if the plural form made it a different term or not, so I looked at the following:

Strokes -- points to the band

Vines -- points to the plant

Doors -- points to the band

Eagles -- points to the animal

and that completely confused me. Thank you for clarifying, and thanks for your help. I hope I didn't make your life too difficult...

DDR arrow image.

I realized one thing that we neglected to consider. Instead of using a DDR arrow, we may use the aarow used in IN the Groove (or from Stepmania). As the game use MIT License, we should be able to use its images without any copyright complications. SYSS Mouse 03:00, 30 January 2006 (UTC)

Medal Infobox

Oh, I had already done that infobox the day before you made that! :o\ (See {{Olympic Record}}) Ahh well, I updated yours so that the olympic rings picture meshes better with the background color. I also added a {{MedalDisqualified}}, because I have seen this on rare occasions where a medal was taken away, and I believe this is significant. I wanted to add it to the talk pages, but first, I wanted to clear it through you...
As for my own {{Olympic Record}} template, should I just point it to these ones here? Or send them off to TfD? There are only several articles that use it so far, so it's not a big deal. Let me know. tiZom_{(the man)} 06:42, 3 February 2006 (UTC)

Oh, hey, sorry, didn't see that you'd made that one. My only thing is that Olympic record (btw, holy cripes does that need more info...) has a meaning similar to world record, and therefore having it as a header for the box might be confusing (perhaps just "Olympic medals" might work?). But the background color definitely looks better. And the Disqualified one is nice for these people (at least, the ones who won medals before being caught). I suggest redirects for the duplicate templates, as that's less work than TfDing them ;) but do whatever you feel should be done with them. -- Jonel | Speak 03:33, 4 February 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, I wasn't too vocal about making it... I was just sort of playing around with it...didn't know anyone else would be too interested! Anyway, I changed the template to "Olympic Medal Record." Hope that works :o) Also, I templated all the talk pages to the {{MedalTop talk}} page. That way, if we have updates, we can just change the MedalTop page, and it can be seen from anywhere. I also added the {{MedalDisqualified}} template into the general instructions. Do you have a plan on getting this implemented throughout all the individual olympian pages? I've got all of the 1896 Summer Olympics medal winners done (old Olympics are quite fun to look at and compare to modern ones--though old Olympic Reports leave much to be desired). Starting to get busy as heck with "real life" stuff, so I'm probably not going to be doing too much on WP for a while. Table Formatting

Hey, I was wondering if you could help me with something: I'm trying to make some results pages for some Torino events, but I'm having a little trouble with tables. I saw your little tournament template that you've got (User:Jonel/Bracket-test), and that's really advanced, so I figured you'd know this :o) If you would, take a look at this. I'd like to remove the vertical border lines surrounding the athletes' names, as well as the horizontal line that separates them. Do you know how I do that? tiZom_(2¢) 00:53, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

I've mostly just modified that from Template:Round16-waiting. As for removing the border lines, those are part of the wikitable class. MediaWiki:Common.css is where you can find the CSS for the class. Drop the class tag, and the lines disappear. You can pull desired attributes from the CSS page. You can add borders selectively through tags like

style="border-width:0 0 2px 0; border-style: solid;border-color:black;"

The order of the 4 border segments is top, right, bottom, left. Higher px numbers give thicker borders. #aaaaaa is the standard gray color used by wikitables, if you want that color. Let me know if this helps. -- Jonel | Speak 01:27, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

Could you explain what happened here?

• I don't see why this conversion was necessary in the first place.
  • The transparency doesn't work in all browsers. In mine, for instance, the transparency was showing up as black (which looked terrible...). I changed it to white, but then didn't realize that I should have used the gray tone that's used in the table itself.
• In your edit summary it says you used AWB, does AWB automatically convert images with transparency to images with a white background? I could see some serous problems if this is the case.
  • I only use AWB because I have a terribly slow internet connection, and the save almost always fails on me if I'm saving on a normal browser. Sorry for the confusion!
• The conversion was done incorrectly. My image contains an alpha channel, by the image was not blended correctly with the background in your image.
  • What I did was really rough. I don't have much graphic capability, and I didn't think it mattered terribly, especially since it is on such a small scale.
• You changed the license from GFDL to public domain, while I doubt my image is ellegible for copyright I would have preffered if you had contacted me first.
  • You're right - I should have paid attention to your license. I'm very foreign to the whole copyright thing, and when I looked at the list, that's just what I figured you would have put down. Very sorry about that.

The problem is that the background-color of Wikipedia pages is not fixed. I depends on the skin you use etc. What browser do you use? I know PNG redering is f*cked up in Internet Explorer 5 and the it is definitly fixed in IE7. Don't know about about IE6, though. —Ruud 21:32, 25 February 2006 (UTC)

Unfortunately, like a good portion of the world, I'm still using IE6. I do know that gif's have the capability of displaying some transparencies (on all the browsers I've seen anyway. Any way you could convert it to gif for now? tiZom_(2¢) 21:39, 25 February 2006 (UTC)

Olympic Rings

Hi, I just have a question about the removal of the Olympic Rings from the MedalTop template. I was under the impression that this was a free image. Per the Olympic Charter, anyone is allowed to use the pictures of the rings as long as they promote the Olympic Movement, which I've no doubt this does. If you don't mind, I need to know which license I can apply to this picture so that we can use it to refer to the the Olympic committees, the Olympic Games, and Olympic athletes. Thank you very much for the comment. I don't want to be the person here taking in all of the glory (because I was the one who created the page, but it is you guys who made it happen), so don't get me wrong, but ever since I created the page I've heard negative feedback from people who disagreed with the outcomes, so it's nice to hear a good comment for a change. I totally agree with you that it is past its "infant" stage, so to speak, and it needs more structure and attention. What I don't want to do, though, is take over what the Wikipedia:WikiProject Sports Olympics has already set out. I think that things would get hostile if we just decided to do things our own way. I suggest letting them know what we propose to do first, and let them decide if it is right. I think sistering up with them would be our first goal...it'll get us some more needed public attention. Medal template use in non-olympic contexts

I noticed when editing a page that uses Template:MedalTopEAA (European track and field (athletics) championships medal table top) that Template:MedalGold, Template:MedalSilver, and Template:MedalBronze have the undesirable side-effect of adding the page to an olympic medal category.

So I created new templates just for use in non-olympic contexts: Template:MedalGoldGeneric, Template:MedalSilverGeneric, and Template:MedalBronzeGeneric which don't do any adding to categories.

I went ahead and updated all the pages affected by this that I found linking to Template:MedalTopEAA, but I don't know about other non-olympic medal table contexts.

Oooh...good catch! I hadn't thought about that. Actually, I was entirely unaware of those categories...seems like someone added those after the fact. I know that the {{MedalTopEAA}} template is the only one that I created. I'm unsure if anyone else created anything different. Maybe for each {{MedalTopXXX}} template, we could have {{MedalGoldXXX}} so that we can add appropriate categories...sound like a good idea? I'm sure there aren't too many widespread competitions that give out gold, silver, and bronze medals. tiZom_(2¢) 23:57, 10 March 2006 (UTC)

I looked in the template index starting with "MedalTop" and Template:MedalTopEAA is the only one there beside the two Olympic ones (standard and the one for pictures). I'm not sure how to look for templates for other competitions; there may not be any. For now I hesitate to adopt a policy that unnecessarily spawns templates -- the Olympic medal templates do the special category adding to Olympic medal categories, yes, but there may be no need for that for other competitions. For now, I'd say, let's just remember to use Template:MedalGoldGeneric (and its Silver and Bronze variants) with non-Olympic competitions. And yes, the idea of giving out gold, silver and bronze medals is a generic idea -- in sports and otherwise -- and includes such things as World Championships, European Championships, Commonwealth Games, Pan-Am Games in many sports and other regional championships as well as various national competions. Chances are they all merely need what the Template:MedalGoldGeneric, Template:MedalSilverGeneric and Template:MedalBronzeGeneric provide: formatting a single row in a medal table with no side-effects. -- Mareklug ^talk 00:25, 11 March 2006 (UTC)

Actually, I did remove the image from your page (see here). However, I could completely understand if you thought I didn't remove any images, because there are in fact two images of Olympic rings Olympic-rings.png, the image I said I removed, and Olympic rings.svg, the images you removed. I'll admit that I'm very concerned with the coding here, as I'm a big advocate of WP:AUM. I mean, that's why we did the medal infobox like this in the first place, with the MedalTop and MedalBottom templates. You did a great job on the coding there, and I'm wondering if maybe there is a way to get the best of both worlds. My question is this:

Is there a way to create, say, an {{addNOC}} template, such that when you subst: it, then the resulting text is itself a template with parameters?

For example, say you have page Ronaldo. When we add your template to his existing infobox, we get

This way, the meta-templates are only called for the first save, and from then on, it is a single-layer template. Because the only reason that you have coded it your way is just to automate things, so that while coding, we don't have to remember which flag was Brazil using back in 1996, etc. Does this make any sense to you? Thanks for the quick reply. I understand what you are saying and, with my template, I'm not sure if your suggestion is possible because substing pastes the whole template and not just the results. The only other option I can think of at the moment (unless the flags were not included, but I would prefer not to) would be to have a template for each country, but this would create a large number of templates to manage, which I would also prefer not to have. Unified Team Flag

Hey, I noticed that we've both been removing Olympic Rings images all over, and so I was wondering what you thought about using Image:Flag of the Olympic Movement.svg as the 20px flag in pages like this. I feel that since the IOC let this entity use the Olympic Rings, then it should be free in this sense, i.e. only when the Rings are representing the flag that represented the Unified Team. I know very little about copyright except what I see on Wikipedia pages (which, as we know, shouldn't be considered reliable sources). I've been acting to implement WP policy without really paying any attention to what's legally allowable (which, as far as I can tell, is quite a bit more than our policy provides for due to the free-content principle). In this case, my guess would be that the use we make of the Rings for EUN representation is under the terms of a (fairly minimally) restrictive license (the same license by which the EUN team itself used the image on its flag) rather than by the image being free. Then again, I'm not one of the nine people who understand the copyright law of my own country, much less the rest of the world, so... -- Jonel | Speak 23:44, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

I was just looking at the page for Milky Way candy bars (just hungry, I suppose...), and I noticed that the picture Image:Milky Way Wrapped.jpg was tagged as Public Domain. I know this is incorrect - is there a tag for pictures of products? I looked at the list of image license tags but couldn't find it. I'm certainly no expert on copyrights. That's just something I did for myself, to keep myself a little better organized. All I did was create a separate user page and named it User:Tomtheman5/UBX. This essentially creates a subdirectory under my user page. Then I put all my userboxes there (using code). Follow the link, and you'll see what I mean.

Then, to include the entire contents of my "UBX" sub-page into my main user page, I just used the code [[:User:Tomtheman5/UBX]]. (Remember to use that first colon)

I did this also with my "to do" list, my sandboxes, and my milestones page. This way, the code for my main user page is nice and clean, and all the edits are made in the sub-pages.

Regarding the Project Runway designer bios... No, I never heard from the admin, Alkivar, and I believe he also simply deleted my message to him on his Talk page. However, the good news is that the last I checked the bios for Laura Bennett and Uli Herzner were reverted by other users. Also, if you look at Alkivar's deletion log, it looks like he had a little fit of deleting both Project Runway and Top Chef contestant articles all within a span of minutes on October 6, 2006 and all without due process even when some have survived votes for deletion. If you can advise how to stop this kind of abuse by admins, I'd appreciate it. Looking at this guy's discussion page, he doesn't seem like the most popular admin. Still no word from Alkivar, but he continues to delete comments on his Talk page from me and others on this matter and others on the same issue and others like it. I tracked down the history of his nomination and voting as an admin see here and it seems it took three attempts and even then it was tenuous for the reasons we've seen here. I'm not sure if this is a permanent appointment, or if it comes up for renewal. In any case, it looks as if some of these deleted bios have been recreated without interference from Alkivar. G'day, I noticed you created Matt Wertz's Wiki page. I was wondering, have you heard of Dave Barnes? You might notice I've used an offsite link. That's because there's no Wiki page for him. A few things about the images:

• First of all, I reverted the smaller image you had for the CD cover - we're supposed to be using low-resolution images for CD covers.
• Second, I took the CD cover image off of Dave Barnes' page because CD cover images can only be used on pages that talk specifically about the album in question. This leads me to a question: Do you have a picture of Dave Barnes in concert? Something like that would be better to use in this situation.

I saw you might be able to help with a Template import problem. I was trying to import the Template:Infobox_Company to my mediawiki installation, v 1.8.2 . But it comes out all messed up. Ok, here's the deal (or as much as I can gather...) The css for the infobox on WP is stored at MediaWiki:Common.css. You could copy that over to TCPedia wherever the CSS styles are saved on that page if you want, but in the meantime, I just copied over the actual code, so the template is all set there until you get that done. Aside from that, there are some other problems with the template. I'm no expert, but it seems that the ParserFunctions are not set up on that wiki. To get them set up, I think that m:ParserFunctions#Installation will help you. Haha, no, that wasn't me- I'm not that cocky/annoying. I love the Paradise, and I've seen a few shows there (Feist also sticking out in my mind). As you used to, my girlfriend goes to BU, and last year (as a freshman) she lived in the building right behind the club, which had its good and bad points. KoC definitely kept everything soothing and sweet, but they also have so much humor. And when Erlend started dancing... oh man, that was something else. That was defintely up there with the best concerts I've ever seen, if not the best. Fair Use insertion

Hello there, juz wanna say thank you for helping to put the insertion for the image provided... I have been hounded by Elcda0 for no apparent reason that hewas so particular about the images uploaded... If you look into all the ANTM Cycle pages, etc... judges, winners, you would see that I have uploaded the image of the subject just to make the page look aesthetically nice. But he was so insistent which i am sure he complained to the administrator who gave me a last warning. I don;t know about this but i have always pride myself as a fair contributor and the images i have used are always copyright free... was wondering if you can help me rectify this problem. i have also been helping Stealthusa as wsell, but both of us are always tweened by Elcda0, please help! I'm not an expert, but that image you uploaded from Cycle 1 most likely qualifies for fair use, since it's small, was used in advertisements, and (most importantly) was released by UPN.com as a promotional image. The issue JKelly and I are having with Apollolancer and Stealthusa is something different; those two are uploading the photoshoot pictures from cwtv.com, believing them to be in the public domain. Fair use on Olympic rings

The Olympic rings image is not tagged as fair use, and in fact is hosted on Commons. What is your basis for concluding that the use in articles in inconsistent with the licensing of the image? Guettarda 19:29, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

This was a big problem a while back. At the time, we were using Image:Olympic rings white.png, which was marked as Fair Use, but has since been deleted. Ed g2s and I had a brief edit war over it (See the page history of Template:MedalTop), and then when I read up on policy a little more, I realized that he was right. The Olympic logo is a copyrighted logo. As it is not a free image, it falls within Fair Use doctrine, and we should be using it sparingly, no matter how much the Olympic Committee allows it. There's a talk topic at Template talk:MedalTop#Olympic logos which has a little more info, should you need it.

I have been removing this image sporadically for months now as a personal side-project. I hadn't noticed that the image that I'm removing now isn't licensed completely. Perhaps this will need to be revisited. tiZom_(2¢) 20:26, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

Well I had just replaced it entirely with the Commons version. I suppose the removal of that template was inadvertant.

Anyway... my thoughts? At first I thought it was very important. I mean, we can't go having people upload homemade product pictures like Image:Gameboy.jpg and release them into the public domain. To me, that just doesn't make sense. But someone told me that the pictures can belong to one person, the trademark to another. So I thought that we could just put this template on all the pictures like the one above. But then I realized that this is already covered... on the disclaimers that are listed at the bottom of every single Wikipedia page. So I guess it's really a moot point.

All the information I have about it is from you. :D I never read those disclaimers before, and I'm sure no one else has either. I do agree that placing it as an extra warning is a good idea. What I find disconcerting is that it is only a few trademarked images. Maybe we can reqeust an edit to {{logo}} to include &#123{trademark}} at the bottom? Also, I think I'm going to nominate Category:Trademarked images for deletion. OK, my first question. I am trying to upload an image for Bisbee Deportation and am confused by which category I should use as far as copyright licensing. Copyright stuff can get pretty involved, because people are very strict about it. Ready? Here goes:

There are two kinds of images that we can use on WP: free images and unfree images.

 

An image is free if the owner has given up the copyright, or if it is ineligible for copyright (it's produced by the government, it's really old, etc) - The full list of reasons are at Wikipedia:Copyrights and, in particular, Wikipedia:Public domain. It's pretty extensive, and I'd be happy to help you understand it if you need more help on that.

 

This image, however, is unfree - the copyright is owned by University of Arizona. In order for us to lawfully use this image, we either need (1) permission from the copyright holder to re-license it (in most cases, they won't do this, because they lose a little control on the copyright...but seeing as how it's a University, it might be worth a shot), or (2) a good reason to use it regardless of copyright status. Wikipedia can, for example, use corporate logos, movie screenshots, album covers, etc. because we need to have the ability to demonstrate what the subject is, but there is nothing out there that could be used to replace it (e.g. you can't find a "free equivalent" to the NBC Peacock or the cover for The Dark Side of the Moon - it is what it is). This idea is called Fair use, and it allows Wikipedia to use a lot of copyrighted materials. There are, however, a bunch of restrictions. See the Fair Use page, or ask me with any questions.

What is the image, exactly? Post a link to it, and I'll give you my input...

Keep in mind that the goal of Wikipedia is to create an encyclopedia of free content. So whenever possible, we should be using free images.

Regarding the image copyright problem. If it says that you can use it for educational purposes, unfortunately that will still not be enough for Wikipedia. The problem is that the main goal of WP is to create a free and open encyclopedia that anyone can use for any purpose. This means that somewhere down the line, someone may use it in a way that is not educational... and thereby going against the copyright owner's requests. This is why we use free images first, and use unfree ones only when it is necessary.

I had a strikingly similar problem when I was working on a template for Olympic Medal winners (See, for example, the medal infobox on the page for Alexandre Despatie. It used to have a picture of the Olympic Rings because the Olympic Charter says you can use the rings for anything that promotes the Olympic Movement (which pages like this certainly did). However, the image was removed (diff) because somewhere down the road, someone might use our free encyclopedia in a way that does not promote the Olympic Movement.

If I were you, I'd try to e-mail the copyright holders and get permission to license that image under the GFDL license - it's the one that allows the copyright holder to keep the most control over the image. Otherwise, you might want to try to find that image (...or something similar) in a link on this page: Wikipedia:Free image resources. VandalProof

I would like to use it but I usually edit while at work (they get what they pay for which is very little) and I doubt the IT fascists would like it. A question though, I tried to nominate for deletion Michael Aaron McGowan and added it to the articles for deletion page put it didn't look right after I did it. Sure, here's what happened: When you nominate an article for deletion, you have to do three things. I'll go ahead and do it, and give you links to show you what I did:

1. Put a message on the article's page. Instead of just adding a message, you'll want to put this deletion template at the top of the article page (not the talk page): {{subst:afd1}}. "afd1" is a template which is substituted. You don't need to know about either, but just know that when you type {{subst:afd1}} on a page, it will create a box that displays information about the deletion debate. See this diff - All I did was add {{subst:afd1}}.
2. Create a new page to hold the discussion. This is done as a subpage of the AfD page. The previous step actually generated the link, all you need to do is follow it and start up the page. So go back to Michael Aaron McGowan, There will be a link in the deletion box that will say "this article's entry". Follow that link, and start this new discussion page with the text {{subst:afd2 | pg=PageName | cat=Category | text=Reason the page should be deleted}} ~~~~ Check this permalink - The text I started this page with was {{subst:afd2 | pg=Michael Aaron McGowan | cat=B | text=non-notable individual, reads almost like an advertisement}} ~~~~
3. Transclude that page onto the AfD log page. Take the title of the page in step 2, and add to the log by placing {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Michael Aaron McGowan}} at the bottom of the AfD log page. This takes the entire content of the Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Michael Aaron McGowan article (the discussion article), and includes it in the AfD log. (See this diff) Now, when you see the log, you'll see the deletion discussion. Now if you go to the log page, and try to edit that particular section, you'll actually go to the edit page for the subpage.

In fact, a lot of pages in the Wikipedia: namespace operate like that, Like Wikipedia:Featured article candidates, Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates, etc. The benefit is that all of the edits (people supporting/opposing) go on individual pages, rather than the respective main page. It's just better organized that way.

PS - You may want to check out the software that Mr. McGowan produced: Madeche vision. It seems like it might not be notable either, but I'll let you make that call, and decide if you want to nominate it. Let me know if you have any problems! tiZom_(2¢) 07:01, 31 March 2007 (UTC)

Vandalism?

Hello. Can you please tell me how you identified this [3] edit as vandalism as you recorded in the edit history. Most people would not characterize changing a red link back to blue as such. If it was an error, as I suspect since you reverted yourself immediately afterwards, was this error caused by the tool you were using or by you personally? Either way, I think it would have been civil for you to revert yourself with a comment that the prior edit was not in fact vandalism, rather than just undoing yourself with the tool. Ha, for some reason I knew that would blow up in my face. I was on random patrol for vandalism. and, well, one sees certain words..."brat" being one of them... and one assumes it's vandalism, so I jumped on it. I was only looking at the changes, and I thought "military brat" couldn't possibly be a WP page. When it saved, I realized "military child" was red, checked both pages, realized I was wrong, and reverted myself. It's probably that you only need to bypass your cache for changes to take effect. If you're using Firefox, Ctrl + F5 should do it (the script doesn't work in IE, but that's Ctrl + F5). As a sidenote, you can have anything you created/uploaded deleted by an administrator by adding the {{db-author}} tag to the article/image. Just a friendly reminder to make sure that you include source information (i.e. where you came across the image) when you are uploading media. Otherwise it could get deleted rather quickly (see MarvOwen.jpg and VicSorrell2.jpg). Also, for copyrighted material, please don't upload such large images, as these instances are infringe unnecessarily on the owners' copyrights. By the way, what do you know about the author of these pictures? They may be in the public domain, depending on when the original author passed away. Please refer to Wikipedia:Naming conventions (films) before moving pages to an incorrect capitalization. Even if the film uses incorrect capitalization, the wiki article name uses the correct capitalization. The article itself, however, is free to use whatever capitalization. Then your spelling of "Once Upon a Christmas" does not follow the convention either, since "upon" is a preposition of less than five letters, and therefore should not be capitalized. A lot of my WP edits these days are related to images and copyright law (reducing sizes for Fair Use images, adding tags for missing license info, adding rationales), and so when I saw that nom (especially after having been around for the first failed one), I was a bit wary.

Thanks - didn't realize I missed that one! I wrote a Visual Basic program to help convert them to the table format, so this whole process has been relatively easy.

PS - I would say not to worry too much about the red links for the names - eventually, each of these places should have complete articles (a daunting task!) because they're notable by default (I think...). The red links serve as a reminder of what needs to be done :o) The dates, on the other hand, probably shouldn't be linked... there's really no purpose (and of course we're really not supposed to link the same thing more than once in an article). I wanted to remove those links before, but I couldn't fix the program to do it, so I think I'm going to have to do them by hand.....eventually :o) tiZom_(2¢) 15:35, 27 March 2008 (UTC)

Hi Tomtheman5. As you may have noticed, I and some others have revisited all the Massachusetts NRHP list-articles to further refine the tables. I think the system of list-articles is looking pretty good. We added coordinates from the National Register system which are pretty good, too, and often would be helpful in your finding places. I saw elsewhere that you might bike-tour to get pics. Hopefully you can click on the Google map links in the articles and find that helpful in mapping out good bike routes. The coords, though, are not always correct. (In fact, there is a systematic 100 yards or so mislocation in the pre-1985(?) ones for Massachusetts due to a change in mapping systems from old U.S. Geo Svc. quadrant maps to the new system used by Google maps, etc. However, someone else is probably going to provide corrected, exact coords.) Anyhow, I hope you might be re-enthused by recent developments, and may add to the MA NRHP articles and/or chime in at Talk page of List of RHPs in MA. doncram (talk) 20:15, 17 February 2009 (UTC)

I'm going to be honest with you: I'm not that good :o) I get this problem a lot when I take pictures in daylight, and so I've been researching ways to fix the overexposed sky. The three photos I touched up are perfect candidates because there is a high amount of contrast between the sky and the trees (See how dark the trees are? ). All the other pictures have a different kind of tree that lets some light through (See the tree on the left-hand side ), and makes it hard to remove the old sky (If you remove too much, the tree looks like leaves are just floating all around it, and if you don't remove enough, then the branches get a white glow in front of the new blue sky).

I'm still trying to figure out if there are ways to do it, and I'll definitely take a look at the other photos if I can find a good method.

PS - You should open an account at the Commons and upload your images there so that other language wikipedias will have access to your photos directly! tiZom_(2¢) 08:43, 5 April 2008 (UTC)

I went ahead and converted it for you (You can find it at Image:FPR-pathway.svg). In the future, I wouldn't worry too much about this tag - there are tons of people here who know how to convert images to a scalable vector format, and that tag just notifies them that your image is a good candidate. However, if you're curious, the program that I used to convert this to SVG is called Inkscape. It's open-source, and you can download it at www.inkscape.org.

As a side note, you may want to consider uploading your free images to the Wikimedia Commons, rather than the English Wikipedia. If you upload it to the Commons, then it is immediately available to each of the 255 Wikipedias out there. Hi Tom, thanks for your message. I think Bristol County RI would be the ideal, but the problem is numbers with the larger counties. The middle way might be to split out the larger cities & towns into separate lists and combine all the little ones in one county list as you've done in Providence. I like it because then if I want to see all the ones in a particular town, I can click on the City of Town switch button & it will put them in alpha order. Flickr images

Hey Ron!

Just wanted to let you know that if an image is labeled on Flickr as non-commercial , then Wikipedia can't accept it. To be allowed on WP, an image licensed Creative Commons needs to (a) allow for commercial use, and (b) allow for edits. So basically that limits us to CC-BY and CC-BY-SA . In the past, I've had luck flickr-mailing the user and asking them to change their license on each image that I wanted to put on WP. Hope this helps :o\ Sorry... tiZom_(2¢) 01:57, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
