Some tips to help you out!

Hi Tom Pippens, I thought I'd drop a few notes on your talk page with some help on writing articles :o)

First of all, it may be best for you to do a bit of reading, starting with the Wikipedia manual of style, which will give you a lot of information about how Wikipedia prefers its articles to be written. It's not as hard to follow as it might look; quite a bit of the information there probably won't be vital for you at first.

Second, I recommend you make a user sandbox - which is just an area you can use to practise in, and to make notes in, and to get things ready in. If you click this red link: user:Tom Pippens/Sandbox, that will let you create that page (it gives you an edit window to start work in). Anything, anywhere, on the help and information pages which gives you an example, try it out in your sandbox until you're familiar with it.

For your article, the next thing you want to do is start collecting as much information as you can about it. Google searches (particularly in Books and Scholar) will be your best friend for this! Once you've found the information, the next most important thing is to start writing up each fact in your own words (very important, this), and make a note at the same time of exactly where that information came from. Build in the references as you go along; I'm going to copy in, down below this, a whole heap of help on doing references, which was produced by one of our best teachers (Chzz).

Here's another place that you'll find incredibly useful - citation templates which you can copy and paste into your sandbox, between <ref></ref> tags; you just fill in the blanks from your sources into the template, and you'll end up with nicely formatted inline citations :o) It all helps. Remember to add a references section to your sandbox (make a new line, and put ==References== on it, and type {{reflist}} on the next line, so that you can see how your citations look as you do them. Remember to save your page often! You don't want to lose your work.

Hopefully this will give you a good start and make life easier for you.

You can put anything you like between <ref> and </ref>, but using citation templates makes for a neat, consistent look;

Here's a little bit of magic which can save you an awful lot of time and effort!

You might want to consider using this tool - (tools:~dispenser/cgi-bin/webreflinks.py) - it makes your life a whole heap easier, by filling in complete citation templates for your links. All you do is install the script on Special:MyPage/common.js, or Special:MyPage/vector.js, or Special:MyPage/monobook.js, and then paste the bare url (without [...] brackets) between your <ref></ref> tabs, and you'll find a clickable link called Reflinks in your toolbox section of the page (probably in the left hand column). Then click that tool. It does all the rest of the work (provided that you remember to save the page!) It doesn't work for everything (particularly often not for pdf documents), but for pretty much anything ending in "htm" or "html" (and with a title) it will do really, really well all by itself. For those it can't do by itself, it gives you a pull-down (or up) menu of templates to choose from, which you can then fill in manually. Often the problem is "No title found" - sometimes the title is obvious (especially if it's a pdf), but, if not, just open the page yourself and choose something appropriate if there's not already a clear title there. While I do not oppose or support the deletion of the redirect in question, I do feel the chosen median is the wrong one. MFD would be more suitable. Terry Hogan

I'm not disputing that Terence Hogan is his name (although technically we don't have a source for that), but per WP:COMMONNAME we don't show any preference for "official" names when naming articles, what's important is what the person is commonly called in English sources. The only cited source we have at the moment (the Daily Mail article) refers to him as either Terry Hogan or Lucky Tel Hogan and doesn't use Terence at all. If somebody were searching for this article they're much more likely to type in one of those names, regardless of what's on his birth certificate or court documents.

Also, regarding the disambiguation page at Terry Hogan, I'm afraid the disambiguation guidelines, like all the guidelines, are far more complicated than "two <x> hence disambig[uation page]". Specifically, we have to consider whether there's a primary topic. In this case my take is there's one primary topic and one secondary topic—Hulk Hogan is far more well known and so even though it's not his most common name Terry Hogan is far more likely to refer to him—so per WP:DISAMBIG we should use a hatnote on the primary topic to disambiguate rather than a dedicated disambiguation page.

And one last thing: I understand it's frustrating to have a couple of your edits reverted at once, but I strongly recommend following a bold, revert, discuss cycle in future. In short, it says if you disagree with someone reverting your edits then you should open a discussion and reach a consensus, or at least make a bold attempt at compromise version, rather than simply reverting again. Re-reverting a revert isn't very constructive and often leads to edit wars. joe•roe^t•c 12:29, 29 January 2012 (UTC)

Plot to isolate Dublin

Hi, re the addition to the 'Irish Free State Offensive' article, the newspaper report is not accurate.

The disastrous bridge destroying operation in county Dublin was a Dublin IRA affair. There were no cork men invovled and they certainly didn't come from Liverpool. It's laid out in detail in , 'No Surrenders Here! The Civil War Papers of Ernie O'Malley, p192. The plan was discovered from captured the Anti-Treaty officer Liam Clarke that Republicans have planned to destroy all the bridges leading into Dublin. 104 Anti-Treaty fighters were captured in north County Dublin, including their officer Pat Sweeney.

Well its in Timeline of the Irish Civil War.

But the incident is quite well documented.

Michael Hopkinson in Green Against Green quotes the National Army report that, "In North County Dublin we picked out the likely bridges and sent patrols to same. In nearly every case the Irregulars were found in teh act of tearing up the bridges. We captured 104 Irregulars, including the officer in chage, Pat Sweeney."

However from the anti-Treaty side, 'No Surrender Here!', p132-133,

Frank Henderson (OC Dublin Brigade IRA) to Ernie O'Malley (Assistant IRA Chief of Staff), 30 August 1922, on the operation of August 5-6, finishes

"The total number engaged in the 2nd Battn [Dublin Brigade] was 146 of all ranks. Of these 58 were captured including the Battalion Comdt." (goes on to list weapons lost etc).

It's not Ernie O'Malley's writings, it's his papers, published by his son Cormac. The letter in question is printed from Frank Henderson to EOM - so fairly trustworthy I would say.

The anti Treaty IRA didn't have the ability to mount co-ordidnated operations like that, which in fact goes a long way to explaining why they lost the civil war. Though, on looking more closely, I see Hopkinson does mention that 'some Cork men were brought to help'. Henderson does not mention this. But if it was teh case you're looking at a small number. In short, this was a typical , localised and bungled anti Treaty IRA operation. Jdorney (talk) 11:26, 21 April 2012 (UTC)

Hi Tom

For that article, the sentence "An attacking fullback, his pace and ability to get up and down the flanks creates problems for the opposition" is the trouble which is causing vandalism, which, the edit you pointed out wasn't. It may have been unhelpful, but it's not a pattern and it is not falling into the definition of vandalism by itself.

May I suggest replacing the sentence mentioned with something about his moving to Portugal from Bosingwa at a young age, that will calm things down by at least 70% right there. If you'd like help just ask, as the sentence doesn't have a leg to stand on regardless of the reference given. It doesn't belong in the lead section and must be used as a quote stating who said it if it is to be in the article at all. Penyulap ☏ 22:48, 24 May 2012 (UTC)

well, it made me smile, and it's true, however I think it is quite possible that you may run into a few people at ani that don't like the manner in which that 'messed up sig' has been done, probably the way the links are arranged for talk straight after person, you might like to put a little more distance between the two, I don't care, and don't take this as a warning, but rather a heads-up on what other editors will think(actually there is a tendency for some people to echo my critique occasionally, usual my own critics though, when I mention faults with my work).
