Python

Hi Tom, nice to meet you today, hope to see you at a London meetup sometime. I noticed you are a Python programmer, I've got a bot I specced that needs adopting from a former user, any chance you could take over the code or show me how to? ϢereSpielChequers 23:11, 27 November 2010 (UTC)

UK Community Notice - IRC meeting

Dear Wikipedian,

This is the first of what will hopefully be a regular notice to help bring together the UK community so that you can be involved in some amazing things. To kick things off, there will be a UK community IRC meeting at 1800 UTC, December 7, 2010 to discuss the future growth and developement of Wikimedia UK. Without huge community support and involvement, the chapter cannot be successful and to get the most out of it, get involved.

For information on the community IRC meeting please go here

More to come about:

  • Wikipedia 10th Anniversary Events
  • 1st Annual UK Wiki-conference
  • Trustee interest meeting - an event for those community members with even just a fleeting interest in becoming trustees of Wikimedia UK.

Many Thanks

wikinews article on pay equality

Hi Tom Morris! Just a second regarding the article "British government scraps planned rules on pay equality". My doubt is about the sentence "Women's groups and trade unions have condemned this move." What do you mean with "Women's groups"? "Groups set up by only women" or "Groups of people - men and/or women - who defend women's right? Thanks a lot in advance!--82.53.17.165 (talk) 18:09, 9 December 2010 (UTC)

I mean feminist groups in the second sense you list.
In the future, could you put comments regard Wikinews articles on Wkinews rather than Wikipedia? --Tom Morris (talk) 02:37, 10 December 2010 (UTC)

London Wikimedia Fundraiser

Good evening! This is a friendly message from Chase me ladies, I'm the Cavalry, inviting you to the London Wikimedia Fundraising party on 19th December 2010, in approximately one week. This party is being held at an artistic London venue with room for approximately 300 people, and is being funded by Ed Saperia, a non-Wikipedian who has a reputation for holding exclusive events all over London. This year, he wants to help Wikipedia, and is subsidising a charity event for us. We're keen to get as many Wikimedians coming as possible, and we already have approximately 200 guests, including members of the press, and some mystery guests! More details can be found at http://ten.wikipedia.org/wiki/London - expect an Eigenharp, a mulled wine hot tub, a free hog roast, a haybale amphitheatre and more. If you're interested in coming - and we'd love to have you - please go to the ten.wikipedia page and follow the link to the Facebook event. Signing up on Facebook will add you to the party guestlist. Entry fee is a heavily subsidised £5 and entry is restricted to over 18s. It promises to be a 10th birthday party to remember! If you have any questions, please email me at chasemewiki at gmail.com.

Hope we'll see you there, (and apologies for the talk page spam) - Chase me ladies, I'm the Cavalry (talk) 00:07, 13 December 2010 (UTC)

Hi Tom. Thanks for your welcome. I've been doing bits for a while. I've removed the multiple issues notice on the Manchester Digital entry for reasons explained in the talk page there. Shaunfensom (talk) 19:48, 18 December 2010 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Dhyanyogi Madhusudandas

I removed the prod tag you placed on Dhyanyogi Madhusudandas, as the article was at AfD in 2008 and therefore cannot be deleted via prod. Additionally, your comment in the deletion rationale "not sure if it needs to be deleted" indicates that deletion is not uncontroversial. I have no opinion one way or the other on the merits of deletion, and you are welcome to open another AfD. —KuyaBriBriTalk 20:09, 22 December 2010 (UTC)

Sources about sep. of church and state/postmodernism

Hi Tom, I have started a bit of a tricky article, postmodern religion, and I would really love to find a source or reference relating to how postmodern interpretations of religion may link to/influence/make it easier for a separation of the Church from the State, or at least think critically about the role of Church and state etc? Thanks, --Kary247 (talk) 14:52, 5 January 2011 (UTC)

Reviewer permission

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged revisions, underwent a two-month trial which ended on 15 August 2010. Its continued use is still being discussed by the community, you are free to participate in such discussions. Many articles still have pending changes protection applied, however, and the ability to review pending changes continues to be of use.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under level 1 pending changes and edits made by non-reviewers to level 2 pending changes protected articles (usually high traffic articles). Pending changes was applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

For the guideline on reviewing, see Wikipedia:Reviewing. Being granted reviewer rights doesn't grant you status nor change how you can edit articles even with pending changes. The general help page on pending changes can be found here, and the general policy for the trial can be found here.

If you do not want this user right, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 17:29, 21 January 2011 (UTC)

My other dumb question. Can I import my user page layout from CZ? I did not design the page as I "borrowed" it from another user there. The license at CZ is slightly different than WP. Can I do this? Sorry to be such a bother and thanks again! LittleRedWriter (talk) 15:12, 7 February 2011 (UTC)
There's license compatibility between Citizendium and Wikipedia, so you should be able to import stuff from your Cz user page. Have you seen Wikipedia:WikiProject Citizendium Porting by the way? —Tom Morris (talk) 15:57, 7 February 2011 (UTC)

{unindent} Did I do this right? I look forward to getting the feel of the place and I do hope you'll be able to guide. Let me know what's the best way to get started. I will be importing my user page layout from CZ. I "borrowed" the layout from another CZ contributor as I don't have the same level of computer expertise you guys have. You have to remember I am almost a senior citizen. LOL!LittleRedWriter (talk) 16:34, 7 February 2011 (UTC)

Resource request

Hi Tom. A user at this thread suggested that you might be the person to contact regarding obtaining a certain source. The thread has more detail but I am looking for an article in the Daily Express on Hadji Ali that was written soon after he died (on November 5, 1937) that other sources indicate has information that may be crucial for the article which I'm hoping to take to WP:FAC. Having done searches in the online (pay) database I think it may be an article from the November 18, 1937 edition though it's possible that's yet another article, and the one I'm after is closer to his date of death. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 01:44, 8 February 2011 (UTC)

Hey, Fuhgettaboutit. The British Library do have copies of the Daily Express in microfilm and paper form (shelfmarks MLD3 and LD3 respectively), but newspapers at the BL are stored away from the main building at a separate library in Colindale. Getting access to newspapers from the BL requires 48 hour advance notice, and I'm not sure how much you can request from them (I'm guessing they won't just let me browse through the Express from 1900-1996!).
There may be some extra travel costs for me to travel to Colindale, and copies of material in the British Library incur copying costs. This is probably about £5-£10 expense at most, and probably half a day of research work at Colingdale. From what I can see, Colindale should probably be the last resort. I'll phone the BL reader helpline in the morning and see what they can do. I'll also contact my local libraries as they do have some microfilm copies of local and national newspapers, but I'm not sure exactly what coverage they have.
I had a look at the academic databases I have access to through Senate House (University of London), and while they do have some UK newspaper holdings, they don't cover the Daily Express.
If I can't get hold of stuff from elsewhere, the earliest I can go to the BL is on Saturday. I'm going into central London on Wednesday, but that's not enough time to do any requests from the BL. If I can get access locally, it may be much quicker. Hope that helps! —Tom Morris (talk) 02:11, 8 February 2011 (UTC)
Oh my! Your offer of legwork is incredibly generous! I thought you might have free access—I wasn't asking you to incur any costs or spend loads of your time. Listen, I'll just spend money and see if the November 18, 1937 article is the correct one. The entire newspaper from 1900 to current is online (at the link I provided for the newspaper above), it's just behind a pay firewall; that is what made me think that someone with library privileges might be able to gain free access. It's not that I'm cheap or that the amount of money is very significant to me it's just that I've always felt that information should be free and it galls me to have to pay when the purpose of my use is for volunteer work. --Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 02:44, 8 February 2011 (UTC)
I haven't been asked before! But basically for books, if I'm going to the BL at St Pancras and I have space on an existing document delivery request, I could do so and then use them to update WP with citations and other cleanup stuff.
There might be an alternative though: I've posted your request over on Wikipedia talk:GLAM/BL. Someone at Wikimedia UK or the British Library (as part of the WP:GLAM collaboration) might be able to help. —Tom Morris (talk) 03:04, 8 February 2011 (UTC)
That's great Tom, thanks. I'll give it a week. If it doesn't pan out, I'll just pay. Thanks again.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 03:14, 8 February 2011 (UTC)

Hi Tom, thanks for the suggestion for the wikisocimperial user account. Can I ask that you give me some help with doing things tomorrow, as I don't think I fully understand - but I'll have a go now in any case. Also, Alex Stinson cannot unfortunately be at the meetup tomorrow - is it possible for you to bring a microphone(I don't have one) to skype with him? Or the necessary things for google talk? Hello, I was wondering if you could make a banner ad for me for WP:ADS. If you can, I would like it to direct to WP:VIRGINIA, the Virginia WikiProject and feature the Virginia State Seal, which you can see here. Something kinda with the style of this banner ad, but I will leave that up to you. Just would like the seal featured. If you can do that, please let me know. If you don't have time, that's cool, but could you direct me to someone who can. Take Care...NeutralhomerTalk • 22:53, 12 February 2011 (UTC)

Sorry, I'm a bit crap at banner design (as my only contribution to WP:ADS shows!). You might want to ask on the talk page at WP:ADS instead. —Tom Morris (talk) 22:29, 14 February 2011 (UTC)
No worries :) I will ask at the talk page. Oh and a mistake on my part, WP:ADS goes to the WP:SPAM, it is actually the WP:BANNER page I was discussing. Odd, how they call the project Ads, but the Wikilink is WP:BANNER...go figure. :) - NeutralhomerTalk • 22:48, 14 February 2011 (UTC)

Criticism

Can you explain this revert? You criticise things people can do something about. This goes for his music and image, bot not for his looks. Or would you say, 'hey! You look to young, get plastic surgery'? Steinbach (talk) 21:36, 16 February 2011 (UTC)

It smelled a bit too much like vandalism. I see a lot of crap coming through Pending Changes and I tend to err on the side of anti-vandalism and I guess I didn't assume good faith. It's a good faith edit and probably should have been accepted by a Pending Changes reviewer and discussed on the talk page as per normal process. Very sorry about that!
As you are a longstanding editor on WP, I'm slightly surprised that you aren't a confirmed or autoconfirmed user. Have you considered contacting an admin and getting confirmed? That way you can edit semi-protected pages and update pages on Pending Changes without having them reviewed. —Tom Morris (talk) 00:43, 17 February 2011 (UTC)
Thanks a lot! As I am not a native speaker of English, I may miss the POV overtones that a word like derided possibly bears. Of course, the page is very prone to vandalism; I'm not a swooning 13 year old JB fan (nor a 16 year old puerile JB hater), for that matter.
I'm not very active on the English Wikipedia so I hadn't found about the confirmed user status. Thanks for noticing, I will request it soon. Steinbach (talk) 01:05, 17 February 2011 (UTC)

Request for a paper in Jstor

Hello there!

I find myself in the situation that I am a foreigner with no access to Jstor, yet I need a certain paper to bring the article on Myrrha further - I've already expanded it to GA. I saw your message at the resource exchange page, so I hope you can help me. What I need is the paper "Byblis and Myrrha: Two Incest Narratives in the "Metamorphoses"" (link). I've already tried writing an email to the author, Mrs. Nagle, but she has not got a digital copy unfortunately. I have seen the article referenced many places so it might become essential to the interpretation part of Myrrha. Thank you in advance, even if you can't help me! Hi Tom Morris - you tagged the above for speedy deletion as an attack page, but on reviewing it I can't see why: the content looks innoccuous to me (though possibly non-notable). Is there something I'm missing? Thanks. Gonzonoir (talk) 09:55, 1 March 2011 (UTC)

New lead for Christian Mysticism

Hi Tom, welcome and thanks for the interest in the CM article.

I am attempting clean up massive changes made (in possible vandalism) recently. We had a reasonably good lead until sweeping changes were made, deleting part of what was, and burying the rest deep in the article while adding a specific and esoteric perspective all in one edit supposedly adding a reference.

Your "new lead" may be appropriate, but the last "new lead" was not-- so am manually reverting back to what was before the vandalism. From the original, then please consider working with us to make that stronger. Thanks --cregil 16:22, 1 March 2011 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Crews Giles (talkcontribs)

Freud/Kierkegaard

Tom Morris, greetings. You recently removed some low quality content about Freud and Kierkegaard (here). The same content has been added to Sigmund Freud; I'd be much obliged if you would remove it there too. I would remove it myself right away, but I don't want to break the three revert rule. Polisher of Cobwebs (talk) 23:44, 5 March 2011 (UTC)

Hi Polisher of Cobwebs. Although I can sympathize with your predicament, I think the best solution is to try and assume good faith towards and seek consensus with Johannesbjerre. I'm not really sure how accurate the accusation they are making is: I know a bit about Kierkegaard (I did a year-long course on him as a philosophy undergrad) but I don't want to start a revert war on the Sigmund Freud article. Sorry I can't be of more help. I'd suggest reaching out to Johannesbjerre on his user talk page and asking him to discuss his edits on the talk page (rather than revert warring, as per WP:BITE). Sorry if I sound a bit preachy but I just think that might be a better approach than the full 3RR back-and-forth! If Johannesbjerre rejects good faith attempts to engage, then progress to reverting, dispute resolution or admin assistance. —Tom Morris (talk) 00:11, 6 March 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for the advice - I'll consider it. "Plagiarism" is an extremely strong accusation, however, so ideally the source given to back it up would have to be a very good one. Unfortunately the source is in Danish, and there isn't even a summary of it online, so there's no way to assess its credibility. Polisher of Cobwebs (talk) 03:30, 6 March 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for that, Tom. I've gone ahead and closed the discussion and redirected the article. If there's a problem (of if I've done anything wrong) let me know. :) Cooltrainer Hugh (talk) 22:11, 6 March 2011 (UTC)

Aviano High School Page Question

Tom: Can you lend a hand and check out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aviano_High_School page? I see you helped clean it up. Granted I am newish to Wikipedia and still learning all the in's and out's but it seems that this page especially this this page is that not all of the information listed reads as "encyclopedic" For instance the information below is one sided and opinionated and not just information. My thinking is that there could be a potential conflict of interest. Granted I am not as experienced as some Wikipedia editors, but again some of the information on this page doesn't seem to be neutral at all. MDG 07:47, 13 March 2011 (UTC)

"Aviano High School dominates all other American schools in Italy in all things, always. Because of this sheer dominance, the other schools consider Aviano to be their rival. However, Aviano does not consider these schools to be its rival because it is so superior to these other schools. The Saints look at these so-called rivalries as more of an idolization. Naples and Vicenza, the two biggest "rivals," are looked at more along the lines of a little brother- mostly annoying and fun to beat up on."

Your thoughts? MDG 20:04, 13 March 2011 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Marnad1963 (talkcontribs)

Hey Marnad1963, my only edit to the article was to change the words "due to the fact" to the word "because" using AutoWikiBrowser, a semi-automated wiki tool.
The content you quote isn't just one-sided or opinionated, it's just silly bragging. I've removed it. In situations like that, even if you have a conflict of interest, you are still free to get rid of it. The conflict of interest guidelines say that even if you have a conflict of interest, you are still free to sort out vandalism, spelling and grammar and so on. You haven't specified what your conflict of interest is though, so you might want to explain that on the talk page and/or your user page.
Hope that helps. If you've got any further questions or problems, feel free to either ask me or post on help desk. —Tom Morris (talk) 20:47, 13 March 2011 (UTC)

Tom Morris: you are preventing me from reverting vandalism from a Cherokee TROLL on the article that I WROTE.

A Cherokee webserver Troll has been identified as (at least one of) the "fellow editor" working behind the scene to eradicate G-WAN, after an independent comparative benchmark largely turned in G-WAN's favor. PLEASE HELP TO MAKE THIS (CHEROKEE WEBSERVER TROLL) EDITORIAL WAR AGAINST G-WAN CEASE.

I am curious to know how you justify (a) the edition of my OWN profile to remove all the evidences of this editorial war by a Cherokee Troll and (b) the blocking of my reverts of the vandalism by this Cherokee Troll of the article I WROTE.Bugapi (talk) 12:47, 22 March 2011 (UTC)

I don't give a crap about any of this. What I care about is your disruptiveness, your conspiracy theorising, your complete failure to understand Wikipedia policy. If you could calm down and approach the situation rationally rather than throwing around accusations that everyone is out to get you or your favourite web server or that there is a secret cabal controlling everything, it may be possible for you to become a constructive contributor. Wikipedia is not a soapbox or a battleground. I've helped articles that were on the borderline of deletion recover from deletion, simply by working productively with other contributors. Acting in the manner you have is completely unproductive for your cause. That's why you've been blocked. —Tom Morris (talk) 12:57, 22 March 2011 (UTC)

Signpost article

Hi Tom - thanks so much for doing the article. The things I was thinking you could put in are Wikipedians at Imperial College webpage and the academy webpage. Also, my full name could be put as Vinesh Patel (user name Vinnypatel). Things you can mention if you want to are that we would like to have a campus ambassador and GLAM ambassador as part of the club, and that we primarily want to investigate Wikipedia use in a scientific manner initially, rather than pursuing advocating its use. Thanks so much again!Vinnypatel (talk) 23:11, 24 March 2011 (UTC)

Resource request

Hi Tom, are you still up for digging out info for others using the Uni library etc? I've hit a bit of a block with a 4 page article from an old volume of History Today but it looks like the thing might be in the UL library system (somewhere!). No probs if it is too much hassle but it would be appreciated if you do have the time/inclination etc.

What I'm trying to get hold of is Vol 23 (1973), pp. 740-743: "Isaac Perrins ..." by W H Chaloner, snippet view. In the UL catalogue I've found this. - Sitush (talk) 14:18, 28 March 2011 (UTC)

I have winkled out a PDF of this article (Chaloner, W. H., ISAAC PERRINS, 1751-1801, Prize-fighter and Engineer , History Today, 23:10 (1973:Oct.) p.740), if you drop me an email I can send you a copy back for research purposes. Cheers (talk) 14:29, 28 March 2011 (UTC)
Woah! Fantastic. Email on its way. Thanks very much. - Sitush (talk) 15:06, 28 March 2011 (UTC)

Ironholds in WP:POST

  • It's surely an important topic (see also the recent message of the Board to the community, although it doesn't add much to Sue Gardner's).
  • The first part (repeating the quote of Sue Gardner's comments from two weeks ago) should be cut, we should try to avoid reporting the exact same thing twice.
    • I'm not sure it should be: it contextualises what comes next. —Tom Morris (talk) 07:45, 4 April 2011 (UTC)
  • " Statistics gathered by Mr.Z-man" - that would be User:Mr.Z-man/newusers? (Please always link sources if possible.) The numbers there are quite different, though, e.g. there appears to be a confusion between "new users" and "new users who made an edit". That study appears to be about half a year old, but it seems we haven't reported on it before and there is this nifty new graphic illustrating it.
  • "the total number of articles has begun to stabilise" - I'm not sure if this is an accurate description [1].
  • I see you made an effort to report in an unbiased way on the proposal to restrict new article creation. Still, I'd like to note that you voted "Strongest possible oppose", and that the opposing arguments get more room in the summary. At the very least, I think that some more facts from Blade's description of the current shortage of new page patrollers might be valuable.
    • I reckon I've fixed that a bit: it has another sentence to give the pro- side.
  • There is also the question how likely this particular proposal is to become reality (has a bug been filed already?), and how many related proposals go unreported (cf. Wikipedia:Wiki Guides/Allow IP editors to create articles).
    • I think that encouraging people to use Signpost as an edited, intelligent space for policy discussion is no bad thing: we can put up an article like this one, and it'll prompt reaction and counter-proposals and so on. Then we report that as a news and notes item on the next week's Signpost. —Tom Morris (talk) 07:45, 4 April 2011 (UTC)
  • The last part should be worded carefully, we shouldn't tell readers they been "identified" as one of the "users who exhibit a less-than-pleasant attitude at Special:NewPages" - it's good to remark that the list is not meant to attack them, but it's still a strong statement to claim that their behavior is problematic based on an automatically generated list alone.

Missing pages in Citizendium dump

Hi Tom. First, thanks for uploading this dump. But I have found an error, although not yours.

There are some missing pages in this dump. It was due to a bug in the WikiTeam[2] tools. The titles affected are those which contain an ampersand '&'. I have fixed that bug and I'm generating a new dump. When finished I will upload it to the "Downloads" section.[3]

If you are interested in archiving more wikis, please, suscribe to the WikiTeam mailing list. Now, I'm downloading DeletionPedia and RationalWiki. Any more ideas?

Regards. emijrp (talk) 13:28, 22 April 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for that, and thanks for fixing the bug! I've got a few ideas of wikis to make dumps of and will join the mailing list. The main reason I backed up Citizendium is that the current management of CZ lacks stability and the finances run out in September. —Tom Morris (talk) 14:02, 22 April 2011 (UTC)

Huggle Revert

Please be careful with your use of the tool. Your revert actually restored a copyright violation that the user was attempting to remove. Keep in mind that not all large section removals are bad. I find the easiest thing to check is if the user removing the content is in fact the creator, especially if the page is new. Thanks, MrKIA11 (talk) 10:01, 6 May 2011 (UTC)

Sorry about that. I didn't see the copyvio issue, I just saw the removal and acted reflexively. I'll try and be more aware in the future. Thanks. —Tom Morris (talk) 10:03, 6 May 2011 (UTC)

History of Medicine

Hi Tom, got your name from the list at WP:LIBRARY which says you have access to University of London Libraries so you might be able to get what I need. Take a look at the conversation at User talk:Foghlopy. I can't get that book at a local library but according to Worldcat it is held at the University of London. Can you first of all verify the citations, and secondly, if possible, get copies of the surrounding text for context. Thanks, SpinningSpark 16:50, 7 April 2011 (UTC)

Just checked and it's available in Senate House (HEALTH North Block 2nd Floor (3), HM3 Cas) – it's the 1969 edition. I usually go to Senate House Library on Saturdays but I'm busy this Saturday. I'll either be going up during the week next week, or will probably be up there next Saturday, 16 April. I can certainly do verification and provide other stuff. I'm on IRC too, so if you are able to get on IRC between about 11am and 5pm GMT+1, I can help that way. —Tom Morris (talk) 17:24, 7 April 2011 (UTC)

Further to your request, I have attempted to verify the citations. The results are available on Talk:History of medicine. —Tom Morris (talk) 12:05, 13 April 2011 (UTC)

Thanks ever so much for doing that Tom. I feel quite guilty that you have been put to so much trouble. I have started a thread on Foghlopy at ANI where I mentioned that you carried out this research. I am not particularly asking you to contribute to that discussion (although you are more than welcome), it is just considered good form at ANI to notify persons discussed. SpinningSpark 06:24, 14 April 2011 (UTC)
It's not a big deal for me: I didn't go out of my way to do it. I was in the library working on my own research, and the books on medicine are just two doors down from the philosophy area. With resource requests, I don't do it if it is going to cost me money! Tom Morris (talk) 07:13, 14 April 2011 (UTC)
