Re South African cricket team[edit]

Hmmm... didn't know about him. It's quite a difficult issue because, of course, race is a continuum, not a binary classification. It's therefore debatable whether he was "really" black, if he could have 'passed himself off as white. In any case, it's clear he couldn't have been the first [[bantu|black]] South African player. I think your proposal is a good one - mention all the facts (Llewellyn played and on some definitions was black, Ntini is the first post-Apartheid black player, maybe even mention Adams) but not interpretations. For the moment, I'm putting together early cricket histories for all the countries and when those are in place I'll be doing the long and arduous seasonal review process that I did for England. I've decided to do Bangladesh early as its history is short and can be easily completed. It will be a useful "test case" for the rest. I've now delinked the name, as I'm fairly sure it was the wrong persion. A Gioogle-search indicated that a Ghulam Mustafa Khan was secretary of the PCB during the 1990s, andd I imagine that "our" Ghulam Mustafa Khan is him. I initially thought that there were good edits (for eg, he removed some useless stats from RSD page) but his later edits are very pro-SCG and anti-RSD. Yeah, I reverted the Ganguly edits, as they attack Chappell and insert hagiographic hyperbole, and also claim that Ganguly nurtured all the young players, eg, Bhajji, Yuvraj, Zaheer, etc and credit him with their success etc.... The Dravid article was pretty useless, but now I'm sitting not sitting on the edge of my seat, I may as go and ref my draft of RSD and paste it in there. Mushtaq Mohammad[edit]

Hi Tintin. I don't remember bat-twirling as a specific part of Mushtaq's batting "technique" and, if he was, I'd have thought it doubtful whether anyone could substantiate whether he was one of the first to do it or not. Some other bits in the article are a bit odd too: more centuries than his "more famous" brother Hanif, for instance – not sure any article should be saying that. Nair and Ezhava article[edit]

Hey Tintin, I've rewritten the Nair article, but it still needs some references. I've been trying to find some, and I have added a few here and there. But a lot more could be done. The second issue is with the Ezhava article. It has a lot of POV, unreferenced information, and it sounds very romanticized. I've rewritten some parts, but an individual (192.147.57.6) insists on reverting, claiming "too many Nair references" and such. Perhaps you could take a look at these articles (especially the first one), and give me some pointers on how to improve them? Even if Cornered Tigers is a legitimate nickname, I don't think it deserves to be in the article. Otherwise, in other parts of the article we will have sentences like "One notable omission was the South African cricket team, nicknamed the Proteas who were not competing due to the international sports boycott." Starting Times[edit]

For Test and most first-class matches in England, the usual starting time is 11am local time (10am GMT), except that County Championship matches whose first day is on or after 1st September begin at 10:30 to try to minimise time lost to bad light at the end of the day, with the evenings drawing in (I can't remember if that also applies to Tests). Most 50 overs a side limited overs matches start at 10:30. 40 overs a side matches usually start at 1pm, and 20-20 matches at 5:30 pm. Obviously the handful of day-night matches will start later. I was wondering if you can fill out the section before the 2001 Border Gavaskar series, because I can't really work out how he was behind Sunil Joshi, Murali Kartik and Sarandeep Singh just before and then suddenly was leading the attack with all three of them out of the team for the first Test. disambiguate[edit]

Regarding the various Ijaz Ahmeds... I can see how someone who knows about cricket could make a choice between the two cricket players.

But, can I ask how someone could make the determination that a cricket player is more important than a terrorist suspect, who was held in extrajudicial detention for four years? According to the Daily Times, this Ijaz Ahmed was one of the released suspects who reported the Koran abuse that triggered those world-wide riots.

There was a guy who took it very personally that I thought another Guantanamo captive was as important as a Pakistani servant of Queen Victoria. I didn't really understand why he thought the servant was so important.

I don't understand. But I am not going to make a fuss about it.

Hello Tintin, I was wondering how one would go about requesting an article to be protected from edits by new user. The Nair article is currently suffering from repeated reverts and edits by individuals who find the classification (of Nairs) as Sudras to be unappetizing. By the way, I still remember your request about Paliath Ravi Achan (for your articles on Indian cricketers). I asked my mother, but other than knowing which branch of the Paliam family he is from, she does not know more. I've begun fixing it, but I'm short of references to humiliation, chaos in the England camp, crushing victories etc I think these are essential to tell the story fully - that summer and the craziness with the 4 captains, was all about a team in turmoil due to overwhelming defeat after defeat, but my opinion's not worth a jot here of course! :-) I think you've got access to Wisden online - could you help with some quotes/citations along these lines? --Dweller 10:18, 7 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think that Penn would have to be right. Pennsylvania State is invariably refered to as Penn State and is the less upperclass school of the two. Penn is the Perfect place for a visiting med student/cricketer. Are either of you going to be nominating this for DYK? I've now done that, namely that (according to Barker and Rosenwater) at the time of the 1911-2 series he was being hailed as the best bowler of his type in the world, and also a link to the "original" Ranji to help explain the nickname (which otherwise might puzzle a reader not familiar with cricket). Will "being made to retire under the new regime" will cover both his opinion without being too harsh on the committee ? That sounds like a reasonable compromise. My belated answer is that while I have had a few email exchanges with Vic in the past (all cricket related and pleasant), I haven't heard anything about being bullied into retirement. I'm not currently a member of the ACS but their journal may cover Vic's retirement there. Hi Tintin, Dweller pointed me in your direction for a couple of hard-to-find citations in the Colly article. You may already know we're trying to get this to FA as well as the Windies tour '88, but two things are apparent. Firstly I need some access to info on his domestic career. The international stuff is well covered, well cited and extensive, but I can't find any on-line sources for his domestic career. Secondly there are a number of woolly WP:OR lines which either need referencing or removing, such as:

This return would reignite the ongoing batsman debate between Cook, Bell and Collingwood, with many speculating that Collingwood would be the man to miss out[citation needed]

and

critics such as Geoffrey Boycott and some fans began to question the coaching staff's placement of him in the batting order[citation needed], and of his placements on the team especially in the wake of Andrew Flintoff's return[citation needed]

Re Ranji Trophy records[edit]

I don't actually know any Malayalam at all (my Indian language knowledge only extends as far as very basic Kannada). In fact, my computer isn't even set up to display Malayalam fonts, so I can see only the numbers in that article. However, just by looking at the numbers, using the provided scorecard links, Google and a bit of common sense you can deduce what each number means. Some records still need recent references though.
