Michele Weiner-Davis

Hi

the article on Michelle W D showed up on the list of articles to delete. Yours was a blank one. That is a reason to delete, if it has been hanging around for several hours. Looking at the talk page it seemed that people were putting in more effort about talking about it than creating the article which would solve the problems. I did a quick google search, found the book list of Amazon, and a few other facts from the alumni award page. The references prove the facts that I put in. Since you are new I would not worry about the format of the citations, but the headings and list are worthwhile for you to know.

You could have started it yourself with "Michele Weiner-Davis is a famous author", that would have been enough to avoid the trouble of nomination for speedy delete. Any way it is now there for you to enhance. I have deleted a few other articles today, but they were not of well known people. I did not actually delete the article, just remove the notices. Because I am a different person to you, I can do this. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 05:27, 18 October 2009 (UTC)

Tinkermen, I have deleted this article. It was previously deleted after a discussion here. The consensus was that Michele Weiner-Davis does not meet the inclusion criteria, even if some of her books might. The article should not be recreated unless this concern can be handled; that means that the article must contain independent, reliable sources, such as magazines, journal articles, books, or newspaper articles that provide significant coverage of the author, not just mention her life in passing while they focus on her books. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me on my talk page. Good luck, and happy editing! Karanacs (talk) 18:27, 19 October 2009 (UTC)
cross-posted on my talk pageThere's no need to be sorry! My first article was deleted, too - there are a lot of rules here, but once you learn them editing can be a lot of fun. I'd be happy to look at any draft when you are done, just let me know on my talk page. Karanacs (talk) 14:15, 20 October 2009 (UTC)
For sake of reference, the AfD discussion: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Michele weiner davis. Drmies (talk) 01:59, 31 October 2009 (UTC)

You don't have to worry about preserving what I wrote. My only concern is that the changes to the article are properly sourced and comply with Wikipedia's standards as far as neutrality and weight etc. Happy New Year. Cheers! ChildofMidnight (talk) 05:35, 4 January 2010 (UTC)

Michele Weiner Davis

I have not seen this article. Do you have it in your "sandbox"? Bearian (talk) 02:40, 31 October 2009 (UTC)

Oh, never mind, now I remember. It was under Michele weiner davis - Wikipedia names are case-sensitive excpet for the 1st letter. Bearian (talk) 02:42, 31 October 2009 (UTC)

I created an entirely new article on her here Michelle Weiner-Davis. She's ridiculously notable and there are oodles of sources discussing her books and her methods. ChildofMidnight (talk) 04:07, 31 October 2009 (UTC)

Michele actually only has one l in her name, so CoM's new article should be moved. but beware of the AfD. I agree she is notable. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 10:41, 1 November 2009 (UTC)

Thanks very much for your kind note. Many (most?) of the articles I create are almost immediately put up for speedy deletion or otherwise attacked (and I think the vast majority of those subjects are quite obviously notable). :) It definitely helps to know the ropes. Keep in mind that editors are just doing their best and trying to follow the rules. It does get frustrating sometimes. The community is particularly aggressive against anything that looks like advertising. Good luck with your improvements. Please let me know if I can be of any assistance. There are many editors who are eager to help if they are asked nicely. Have fun. ;) ChildofMidnight (talk) 21:14, 6 November 2009 (UTC)

  • Awards sections are okay. The television sources probably need to be worked into the article itself. "Davis appeared on X(cite) Y(cite) and Z(cite). If there are sources discussing the appearances you could expand on them, but just being quoted here and there doesn't usually get more than a mention (if that). ChildofMidnight (talk) 00:00, 8 November 2009 (UTC)

Judging by R.K. Narayan (that just passed a good article review) it looks like the award section is supposed to be in paragraph form as well. But I've seen it written in more listy form as well. Feel free to add stuff directly to the article or use your sandbox. But don't stress about it. This is a collaborative enterprise, and if an editor doesn't like something they can always change or revert it. If there's an issue that arises just use the talk page. I'll be happy to have a look at either place. Take care. ChildofMidnight (talk) 00:31, 8 November 2009 (UTC)

Oh, and if there's any criticism of her work or approaches I think that would be interesting to add as well. Balance and a variety of perspectives is good. ChildofMidnight (talk) 00:32, 8 November 2009 (UTC)

Citations

Hi Tinkermen, I'm glad you learned about citations! I'm sorry, I should have given you a lesson on that but didn't think about it. Citing is very important, but it can be kind of tricky. Let me know if you run across anything that you can't quite figure out how to do. There is a trick that makes citing books easier, so let me know when you are ready to explain that. I'm afraid I haven't had a chance to revisit the article lately to see your progress. I'll try to make time this week to check it out and see how it's going. I'm so glad you are excited about the project! Karanacs (talk) 18:30, 6 January 2010 (UTC)

Good job

Hi Tinkermen, please excuse my delay in looking at your article. I read through today and made a series of changes. Many of them were simple formatting or copyediting. I also removed a bit of text - you may want to go through and verify that I didn't do so in error. I removed one uncited bit of information. I also took out info about her college alumni award, because that didn't sound very notable, and I took out a lot of information about her mother. The info on her mother seemed misplaced in this article, and since her mother is not notable in her own right (per WP criteria, or so I think), then we shouldn't devote so much space to her. You are, of course, welcome to revert any changes you disagree with. I hope you enjoyed your first big foray into WP! I also hope you have another fun topic in mind to work on next :) Karanacs (talk) 20:50, 3 February 2010 (UTC)

The BLP Barnstar
To Tinkermen, for turning the article on Michele Weiner-Davis into a very good example of how a biography of a living person should be written. Excellent work! Karanacs (talk) 20:50, 3 February 2010 (UTC)

It was an amazing experience, thank you for the kind words and the support, I'm working on a video right now (my first attempt at that to) of my family and friends and when that's completed I'll continue on with the article's I've started or come accross that need help in some way. Probably bug you for advise from time to time. Tinkermen (talk) 05:31, 5 February 2010 (UTC)

Re: WGT

Id be to upload the logo for the game if you wish. A few things to point out though. The logo would be non-free and so can be uploaded here but not on commons, and the logo can only be uploaded and used on an article which is in the main space. So when you finish writing the article in your sandbox and have moved it into the main space, id be happy to either upload the logo for you or help you with uploading it yourself. Salavat (talk) 06:00, 25 April 2010 (UTC)

Ok i added the logo from the WGT site, if you no of a better image then that, send me a link and ill replace it. Salavat (talk) 04:43, 2 May 2010 (UTC)

WGT

Hi there, I have removed a couple of links you placed in see also sections. If the WGT can be worked into the articles and it is clear why it is there over and above the fact that it in the game, then fine, but since the more famous courses appear in many, many video games I fear that the relationship is not strong enough to have it mentioned at all in many instances. Re: Book Cover

Added. You should definatly learn how to upload, the first step is looking for the upload file in the left toolbar under toolbox. Also it helps me find the article if you wikilink the subject, ie A Lotus Grows in the Mud. Salavat (talk) 01:15, 8 May 2010 (UTC)

Looks like you did alright in the end with the two you linked, all the correct licensing is there and the fair use. If you want to rename File:File-Love & Respect Coverart.jpg you should add {{rename media|target name.jpg|reason for name change}} to the image page, with the appropriate target name and reason. Salavat (talk) 15:52, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
Also instread of typing in all the words into the fair use template try just using this: Template:book cover fur, which then just lets you fill in the fields instead of writing out thing. Salavat (talk) 15:57, 13 July 2010 (UTC)

Turning Ten

On Saturday January 15, 2011, Wikipedia will turn 10 years and people all over the globe will be celebrating Wikipedia on that day. Any ideas to meet are welcomed, I figur'd I'd give this a try...

There were only about 6 active editors in the OC area, maybe I should try and leave more messages with the "Southern California" Editors?Tinkermen (talk) 19:58, 5 January 2011 (UTC)

Both (a meet up and contacting all the Southern California editors) seem like a good idea. I don't know what else I am doing a week from Saturday. JimCubb (talk) 20:49, 5 January 2011 (UTC)

I've left about 40 messages so far and sent out an email, still working on it I'm up to the T's for the "Southern California editors". Seems 80% or more are not currently active, but it's hard to judge correctly based on editors discussion pages. Tinkermen (talk) 21:50, 6 January 2011 (UTC)

I started contributing to Wikipedia within its first year, and was active for several years, but I've become busy with other projects and rarely signed in during the past few years. I just now saw your message and didn't realize an anniversary was coming up. Perhaps you should have given a few month's advance notice instead of one week. Well, I hope everyone that knew about the special date enjoyed sharing it with each other virtually. GUllman (talk) 12:59, 6 February 2011 (UTC)

Sorry about that, it was a last minute effort, nothing transpired from it but maybe for the 15th we can put something together down here.Tinkermen (talk) 19:55, 8 February 2011 (UTC)

Hi mate, thanks for the note!

Having a look at your proposed amendments, the first thing I'd say is that there have been about 40 edits to that article since you drafted your proposed changes. There have also been major changes to a bunch of related articles like Skateboarding styles. Just be careful to check whether the edits you want to make have already been made. Some of the articles you link to have been expanded significantly and some of the information you have included in your proposed edits may have been included in those and so may not need to be duplicated in the "main" article.

All of that said, you have some fantastic sources there and some great information that would certainly be worth adding, if not to Skateboarding then to other related articles. It might be worth transferring some of your notes to Talk:Skateboarding to allow a larger group of people to have a look at them, or you could just leave a note there. You might also like to join and leave a note at Wikipedia:WikiProject Skateboarding which I notice you have cited in your proposal anyway.

It would be great to see the article expanded further. The best bet might be to set aside some time, whack up an {{under construction}} tag and WP:BOLDLY edit away. Stalwart111 00:02, 6 June 2013 (UTC)

  • Good feedback & a great analysis of the situation, an edit this big I figured would be rather difficult, after finding so much reference material. Having lost time in the process may have complicated it alittle looks like as we'll, I should have asked for help back in December when I was working on it everyday. Feel free to jump in the sandbox & edit the material as we'll. Tinkermen (talk) 16:27, 6 June 2013 (UTC)
  • Hey, what would you think of moving some of the content you added to Skateboarding about skate shoes to the article Skate shoe. Given it's already a legitimate content-fork and the shoe article would be much better with more content. We can still leave some behind with a {{main}} tag. I'm also thinking of creating Skateboard deck art as a content fork for that section. Thoughts? Stalwart111 00:36, 13 June 2013 (UTC)
Ahh thx for the Barnstar, I agree the info could partically be mixed/split up either way, if you can see it clearly in your thoughts & have a plan go for it. Also the section I have on 2000-present has some similar info probably concerning skateparks, all three of these subjects relating to skateboarding have info that would help the other articles, but it's also important info to the history of the story of skateboarding I tried to lay out in the best way I could at the time when I discovered it all, so I wasn't sure the best way to handle it with my limited multi-article merging information & reference experience lol.
I want to continue with the research & draft more text next on the areas I need to finish still and put some more time on, 1980s,1990,2000s,Films,Books,Magazines, video games ect. Alot of the same info thats in the Culture section already is about films. Can you give me some direction as I progress with this stuff as I discover it and present it in my sandbox, as to how we proceed? Do we actually need to create the Media sections or just put it all into the Culture section. Theres so much history & information yet to be written here about these subjects & present them in the best way. I will delete the stuff from my sandbox thats already been used thus far, so I can focus in more on whats left to look at and complete. Jump in there anytime and give a go of it with those references anytime. Thx for the assist already.Tinkermen (talk) 08:26, 13 June 2013 (UTC)
Yeah, we can certainly look at all of that. For now, it's probably best to let you add all of your information (finish the transfer of good content from your userspace to the article) and then we can have a chat about splitting off to content forks where that might be justified. I think, for now, putting everything in the "Culture" section is fine, with sub-headings for Film and Video games and Music and Magazines and Books. Again, we can always split them out later to something like Skateboarding culture. For now, it doesn't matter if we temporarily have a very large article to work with, especially given people can see it is being worked on. Later, the best way to handle all the articles is probably to include them in the {{Skateboarding}} template at the bottom of each article. But we can work on that after you've done your update - there's not rush. Stalwart111 10:35, 13 June 2013 (UTC)

By the way, thought you deserved this...
The Tireless Contributor Barnstar
This is for all the stuff you've added to Skateboarding so far. Keep up the great work! Stalwart111 00:36, 13 June 2013 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Skateboarding, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Punk (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Newbish wikiPedian wondering about the Wiknic

Hi John! Just discovered the Wiknic is coming up and read through your pages. Would love to connect! I'll be coming up from San Diego and am very hopeful to meet some folks face-to-face who can help me better understand how to contribute to wikiPedia!

I've been working on a program to help make neuroscience easier to understand, especially using mnemonics and animal metaphors. Trying to do as much of it as possible under creative commons licensing, with some of our stuff up at wikihow.com (http://www.wikihow.com/SQUID and http://www.wikihow.com/Mind-Your-SQUID).

We've got a lot of potential volunteers, usually with no wiki editing experience (yet!) who I would love to get involved helping out, especially on neuroscience-y pages. Particularly interested in understanding how to successfully contribute to wikiPedia Simple.

Thanks! DrMel (talk) 00:41, 1 July 2014 (UTC)

  • We would love to have you and others join us for the Great American Wiknic. If you could sign the Wiknic signup sheet so we can determine how many to plan for its always helpful. Looking forward to speaking with you soon as well. John
