Help me please[edit]

Hello Thib, I am a Mexican student (at Tec de Monterrey) and also a new wikipedian. Can you help me please? I would like to ask you some questions. - I need to know about your college major or degree and also in which school did you studied. - I also need to know if you think it would be difficult for me to study there, as I am not a native English speaker. Thank you. --Flea 1100962 20:13, 21 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi José,
I studied at De Anza College, the University of California, Santa Cruz and Stanford University. I received a Bachelor of Science degree from Santa Cruz and a Master of Science degree from Stanford, both in computer science.
I am not well qualified to advise you on academic studies in the United States. Most schools will require you to score well on a standardized test of English as a foreign language such as the TOEFL as they consider you for admission, alongside other factors such as coursework, grades, personal statements, recommendations, volunteering and community leadership, work history, etc. (This varies from admission process to admission process.) There are many people in US colleges who are not native speakers of English but of course the same level of achievement will be expected of you.
I started out in a community college rather than a full-fledged university. Admission is typically easier if the community college is able to deliver the proper immigration paperwork to international students. But community colleges usually do not offer four-year degrees, so you will have to work hard to transfer into the third year of another institution. Of course you can also enter the first year of a four-year institution but you have to apply much earlier.
I felt my first two years were more productive in community college than they would have been in a four-year program, but this is subjective and depends greatly on the community college and four-year program in consideration.
I hope I have helped a little bit.
