Arbitrarily changing the behavior of widely-used templates

Please don't arbitrarily change the behavior of widely-used templates, as you did to {{at}} in having it automatically generate a signature, as this causes problems for everyone who is used to the old way it worked; see WP:VPT#AfD close script acting weird for example. I have reverted those edits. If you have done the same to any other templates, please go back and revert yourself.

FYI, when you updated the documentation you had the last case wrong. It should have been like this:

Usage Result
{{subst:at}} '''result''' because of foo. {{subst:Afd top}} ~~~~ result because of foo.
(This is the traditional method.)

See how the sig is completely out of place there? Anomie 10:52, 14 September 2010 (UTC)

Ok, I understand that the edit was a mistake, but it was a good faith edit, not an attempt to mess up the template. I was not screwing around with the template, but attempting to improve its functionality. I am not here to screw up templates, so try to assume good faith. Thanks. Template PERs

I've just turned down several week-old PER requests you've made for protected templates. I'm not a "templatey" admin, so I'd prefer to see evidence of sandbox testing to ensure they work before making changes, particularly if the change is merely to simplify code rather than for any tangible benefit. Once you've proved the code, feel free to re-instate the {{editrequest}} tags. —  Tivedshambo  (t/c) 22:01, 21 September 2010 (UTC)

Yes, explaining the purpose of a change is definitely necessary. And please continue to use /sandbox rather than placing lots of code on the talk page! Cheers — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 11:16, 22 September 2010 (UTC)

CHU stuff

Thanks again for your work clerking the CHU pages. In general, usurps are only processed in a speedy manner when it is to merge with a pre-existing SUL. There are a limited number of other reasons that come rarely (e.g. indef blocked targets blocked for vandalism), but "vanilla" usurps will usually still be held for 7 days - just FYI. Keep up the good work, –xenotalk 17:20, 23 September 2010 (UTC) I realize I probably created this belief with my edit summaries, but the "main" and contingent reason was always the SUL

  • On an unrelated note, I'm going to try to install a "move target talk page" into the usurp templates that will give a button to move (without redirect) the talk page (or user page +talk page, if it exists) since bugzilla:23819 is taking longer than I'd hoped to be fulfilled. Feel free to give this a shot before I get a round tuit. Cheers, –xenotalk 17:20, 23 September 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for the note. I'll remember that in future. I'll have a look into that, however I believe moving a page without redirect is an admin privilege, so I wouldn't be able to get the full advantage of it. Thanks. Set Sail For The Seven Seas 263° 22' 14" NET 17:33, 23 September 2010 (UTC)

I managed to hack it together =] –xenotalk 14:08, 24 September 2010 (UTC)
It works quite nicely. You may want another link after the usurp and before the rename in order to move the old userpages to the new userspace. Set Sail For The Seven Seas 220° 51' 0" NET 14:43, 24 September 2010 (UTC)
That gets done automagically upon the move (and in that case, we want the redirects, so there is no need for a hacky workaround to bugzilla:23819). Thanks for fixing usurp4 =) –xenotalk 14:46, 24 September 2010 (UTC)
Next project: Detect (using parser & str functions) failure to remove "CURRENT" and "NEW" from start of parameters [1], and strip in subst process. –xenotalk 16:30, 24 September 2010 (UTC)
Done - as seen in the link you gave. Set Sail For The Seven Seas 256° 41' 0" NET 17:06, 24 September 2010 (UTC)
Gettin' there, but I envisioned us using {{str right}} to automagically strip the chars. –xenotalk 17:10, 24 September 2010 (UTC)
Nice! Though, I would probably move the stripping into Template:renameuser so the header can be proper too, and renameuser2 can use less live parserfunctions. Thanks =] –xenotalk 17:25, 24 September 2010 (UTC)
Done - as an extra, it will detect if there is one space before the name and strip it accordingly. This is so that some of the logs work properly. Set Sail For The Seven Seas 280° 9' 30" NET 18:40, 24 September 2010 (UTC)
Some weird encoding going on with the spaces: [2]. I remember I had this exact problem with {{xsign}}, I had to outsource to fix it. –xenotalk 18:47, 24 September 2010 (UTC)
It looks like it's something do to with the str right template. How did you get round the problem with the xsign template? Set Sail For The Seven Seas 323° 25' 45" NET 21:33, 24 September 2010 (UTC)
Oops - I forgot all about this. And then remembered when I saw xsign seems to have regressed [3]... =\ –xenotalk 22:27, 30 September 2010 (UTC)
If you can't get it sorted, maybe ask Wikid77 (talk · contribs) or Patrick (talk · contribs) to take a look, both of whom helped fix up {{xsign}}. –xenotalk 20:24, 1 October 2010 (UTC)
I found the problem. It's at this template. However, it is physically impossible to fix due to the stripping of whitespace by the software. Set Sail For The Seven Seas 330° 51' 45" NET 22:03, 1 October 2010 (UTC)
I tried my best to fix it, but even using Template:Chr fails since it needs to be substituted, giving a standard space, which is then stripped out in the templates above it. Set Sail For The Seven Seas 298° 59' 45" NET 19:55, 2 October 2010 (UTC)
Hm... Well at least it works fine when in-template. If the headers still have CURRENT and NEW still, that's an insignificant & acceptable annoyance. Thanks for your efforts on this. –xenotalk 12:50, 4 October 2010 (UTC)

← One thing that we really don't have any hard-and-fast guiderules on are SUL conflicts for other-project accounts. In general, if an account has been inactive for over a year, and has less than about 25 edits per year of inactivity, I wouldn't consider it a blocker for SUL-claim purposes (e.g.). So I wouldn't really worry about talking about best claim in situations where the other-project accounts are lightly used and quite dormant (though it may be worthwhile to point them out so the user knows they may have to usurp them on other projects to fully unify - especially for "core" projects like commons or meta. [Though, If the SUL already exists, that's another story (e.g.)]. –xenotalk 12:50, 4 October 2010 (UTC)

I'll remember that in future. Also, the code that strips out CURRENT and NEW would indeed work best transcluded rather than substituted. I'll have another look at that at some point. Set Sail For The Seven Seas 348° 3' 45" NET 23:12, 6 October 2010 (UTC)
  • This just kinda bloats the template for a one-off mistake that won't re-occur after T25819 is fulfilled. I think a better way to go about it would be to replace {{user14}} with a template that has a link to the "target logs". Not sure if a suitable one already exists. –xenotalk 13:08, 7 October 2010 (UTC)
Good job! It's much better now! At least now we clerks can check to see if you 'crats actually performed the usurp or rename! :) I won't be around for a while so when I return I'll see the results. Set Sail For The Seven Seas 257° 59' 0" NET 17:11, 7 October 2010 (UTC)

Template changes

Hi, re your recent changes to Template:Str index/getchar. Do they serve some purpose? I'm pretty sure they've broken other templates which were being used to italicize titles in infoboxes. Do you mind if I revert to the previous version, or are your changes needed for something?--Kotniski (talk) 13:57, 15 October 2010 (UTC)

The changes are actually used in other templates. However, I'm still not sure as to why you would need this template for {{infobox ship begin}} and waht the result you are trying to achieve is. I'll take another look. Thanks. Set Sail For The Seven Seas 283° 23' 59" NET 18:53, 15 October 2010 (UTC)

Datamonitor/Informa

I work for Datamonitor which is a subsidiary of Informa and I personally feel that this company deserves its own article on here. I say this because several other subsidiaries are allowed their own articles but they're generally smaller in size and importance than Datamonitor. e.g. Ovum Ltd.. I would like to start the Datamonitor page but it is protected from being started and I assume that there must be some kind of history here. Should there not be some sort of consistency as to what is allowed to be created and what is not? Ovum Ltd. is actually a subsidiary of Datamonitor and gets its own article? This may all seem a bit petty but as Datamonitor has over 1,000 staff and massive revenues I think it would make sense to have a short entry for it. What do you think? Wikipediatastic (talk) 13:45, 19 October 2010 (UTC)

I suggest you start creating the article here in your userspace and then ask an administrator to move the page there when it is ready. You may also need to watch for a possible conflict of interest. I'd recommend asking another editor to review the article before requesting the move. I'd also recommend asking Chase me ladies for an opinion since they create protected the page. Hope this helps. Hi, I'm curious how you get your signatures to change colors every time, do you do it manually or is it some cool wiki code thing? Derild4921 20:40, 19 October 2010 (UTC)

Ah! My chameleonic signature. I use the switch parser function to change the colour each time I sign. It's quite crafty. It's based on various colour changers I've seen on userpages.
