XX disambiguation[edit]

Thanks for your work on disambiguating XX. I just wanted to give you a heads-up that when a disambiguation page is down to linking only user, talk, wikipedia pages and pages that link to the disambiguation page intentionally, the page is considered done and can be moved from the pages needing attention list to the done list. Accidental slip-up[edit]

Excuse me Mister but I vandalised nothing. Someone else wrecked the page and I just tried to restore an old verion, but you got in at the same time casing me an edit conflict and that in turn caused me to select the wrong version and I accidently put the wrong one back up. You're right, I didn't notice you accidentally reverted to wrong version. Remember to fill in a summary before you save an edit. Usually if you explain why you edit, for instance in this case: "revert vandalism", it helps people understand better what you were trying to do, even if it comes out wrong. Accidents happen. Thank you for noting the vandalism to the article and reverting it. However, the user had made two separate bad edits, and you reverted only the second one. I think this is known as "flocking and stacking"... when you go to revert, take care to be sure you are reverting back to the last unvandalized version. substing warnings[edit]

When using certain template tags on talk pages, don't forget to substitute with text by adding subst: to the template tag. For example, use {{subst:uw-test1}} instead of {{uw-test1}}. Yeah, thanks for the info. I know about template substitution. I've read Wikipedia:Template substitution before and I didn't see any templates that start with {{uw- in the list of templates that should be substituted, so I figured it was OK not to. Ben C. Wang[edit]

I think you missed the boat on your speedy deletion of Ben C. Wang. I created it less than 24 hours ago, and did not even have a chance to defend against your accusations of non-notability before it was deleted. I have no connection with Dr. Wang, except my interest in the (now defunct) companies that he started. These comapanies were major players in the magnetic tape market up through the 1990's. If you dispute his notability I suggest we have a normal AfD debate rather than a speedy delete where I don't get a chance to defend my work. -- Austin Murphy 14:30, 16 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I did not delete the page, I have no sysop rights. I possibly marked it for speedy deletion (deleted pages disappear from contributions list, right?) but I don't remember which template I used, probably {{db-bio}}. Anyway, as you can see in the deletion log for Ben C. Wang, wikipedia is not a place for CV's. Your article consisted mainly of a list of companies the person had created. Almost no other context was given. If you think the person is important enough to have a page in an encyclopedia, recreate it and write an article that follows the guidelines for Notability. Also, I direct your attention to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Common outcomes#People. The last line reads: Business persons: Presidents, Chief Executive Officers, and Chairmen of the Board of companies listed in the Fortune 500 (US) or the FTSE 100 Index (UK) have been found to be sufficiently notable. Mind you it does NOT say that CEO's of companies NOT in the Fortune 500 are NOT notable, but it's a good rule of thumb.

I do see your point, it might have been better to put it on AfD so you had more time to defend it. It is hard sometimes to distinguish between articles created in good faith that just need more work or articles that have no chance to survive an AfD discussion whatsoever. Disambiguation link fixing one-day contest[edit]

I have decided to put on a mini-contest within the November 2013 monthly disambiguation contest, on Saturday, November 23 (UTC). I will personally give a $20 Amazon.com gift card to the disambiguator who fixes the most links on that server-day (see the project page for details on scoring points). Since we are not geared up to do an automated count for that day, at 00:00, 23 November 2013 (UTC) (which is 7:00 PM on November 22, EST), I'll take a screenshot of the project page leaderboard. I will presume that anyone who is not already listed on the leaderboard has precisely nine edits. At 01:00, 24 November 2013 (UTC) (8:00 PM on November 23, EST), I'll take a screenshot of the leaderboard at that time (the extra hour is to give the board time to update), and I will determine from that who our winner is. I will credit links fixed by turning a WP:DABCONCEPT page into an article, but you'll have to let me know me that you did so. Here's to a fun contest. Note that according to the Daily Disambig, we currently have under 256,000 disambiguation links to be fixed.
