Disambiguation link notification[edit]

Hi. When you recently edited List of Atlantic hurricanes in the 18th century, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page St. Thomas (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Tropical Storms/Hurricanes[edit]

  • Where does Tropical Storm end and Hurricane start in km/h?, per the project page there seems to be a dispute between the WMO and NHC.Jason Rees (talk) 01:31, 6 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
    • Oh ok wow - i just thought it was just going a typo so please do dig up your notes and then get back to me/the project soon :).Jason Rees (talk) 03:23, 8 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
      • Interesting, i presume all these changes to the SSHS have to be ratified by the WMO, when it meets later this year though. Right?Jason Rees (talk) 21:10, 8 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, DR. I have a question: in your report, the peak total for Cindy in Puerto Rico is 4.60" at Puerto Real; however, a report from the USGS that was archived by the NHC mentions the peak total as being 5.54" near Cerrillos River. I currently mention both in the article, but is there anything else we could? Thanks for your help! Auree 05:44, 15 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

NCDC is not all inclusive nor all knowing, so it may not have that site. I'll look up the link, and if I can find coordinates for the site, I'll remap Cindy's rainfall sometime in the next week. Thegreatdr (talk) 21:50, 15 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

WP Tropical Cyclones in the Signpost[edit]

The WikiProject Report would like to focus on WikiProject Tropical Cyclones for a Signpost article. This is an excellent opportunity to draw attention to your efforts and attract new members to the project. Would you be willing to participate in an interview? If so, here are the questions for the interview. Just add your response below each question and feel free to skip any questions that you don't feel comfortable answering. Multiple editors will have an opportunity to respond to the interview questions. If you know anyone else who would like to participate in the interview, please share this with them. Hurricane Paul 1982[edit]

Hey there DR! I was wondering if there was a reason that this rainfall map for Hurricane Paul in 1982 was never published. I'm currently writing an article for List of New Mexico hurricanes, and that map seems to indicate that Paul caused some decent rainfall in New Mexico (3 inches in the one spot). Is this another government conspiracy I should stay out of, like Andrew's discrepancy in Louisiana? :P --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 01:29, 29 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No. hehehe. I probably was waiting to include the Mexican contribution in order to create a page for it. It apparently led to severe flooding in southeast Mexico and central America while in its initial tropical depression stage. Thegreatdr (talk) 03:45, 29 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

HURDAT discrepancy[edit]

I've discovered a discrepancy for the numbering of the storm with the track shown here. At the article, there was once a storm numbered as #4, although it didn't exist in HURDAT - that edit remained in the history for at least four years (I didn't check which edit added it). I couldn't find the storm as "#9" - which was the original number used in the article for that storm - and the track does say it was #8. HURDAT calls it #8 too, but the MWR for that year says it was #9. So does this HURDAT document, which is confusing] - HURDAT has just entered the 1940s' reanalysis (AFAIK), and in that document, I don't see any storms that were added for 1947. I'm hoping you can clear this up, though if you can't, that's fine! Thanks in advance. :) Hurricanefan25 (talk · contribs) 22:02, 3 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Jamaica[edit]

Yea mon, great job with the Jamaica stuff. It looks good. Do you think the locations should be linked? Or are not all (any?) of them linkable? And no, after 90 inches, I doubt people would notice! (I can't even imagine getting 20 inches here, given where I live). --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 23:05, 23 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

That makes sense, given Floyd did 14". Particularly where I live (right next to the ocean), I can't see it being nearly that high. Am I right in assuming that adjacent to the ocean would not experience the maximum rainfall at this latitude? (unless the storm made landfall as a compact, well-organized hurricane just to the south of me) --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 00:31, 24 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Yea, given my latitude and location, I can't see an actual hurricane hitting with a well-defined structure anywhere around here. For that matter, when was the last time there was a well-defined hurricane that made landfall north of North Carolina? Any one I can think of barely had an eye at landfall (Bob was good but weakened). --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 01:02, 24 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Well, with regards to the Alma article, not every storm was properly cited in that template, and I found a better satellite imagery pic that I felt was more useful than the template. Re: METEO[edit]

Yea, I figured that. I haven't been involved much with the meteorology Wikiproject, but I got the sense of inactivity after I saw how little used the talk page was. I'm glad you responded though! What do you think of this so far? I think I may do something like List of United States billion dollar weather disasters, or something like that. Use the NCDC, and then find any other billion dollar disasters floating out there (starting with Betsy 65). That might come after doing some other assorted weather projects, like the 1998 Chiapas flooding and fixing up some other flood articles. Given the good shape of the hurricane project (all things considered), I figured I'd branch out a bit... finally! --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 04:23, 15 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yea, I saw a reference that said it was a subtropical storm! I was mostly wondering if you had any idea where I could find sources for the storm, mostly in terms of the met. history. It's great how modern storms have write-ups all the time, but 1992 is a whole different era in terms of info. --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 22:12, 15 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Darn, it doesn't seem like they go back that far. Well, it's published now, and I'm happy with it. --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 23:45, 16 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You must mean versions available online. I have paper versions going back well into the 1980s. I believe the publication started in the 1950s. Thegreatdr (talk) 21:39, 17 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yea, online. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 22:18, 17 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
That would be amazing if you could help with that. I'm not sure about going for FA, but if there's enough info, I just might. BTW, I'm also starting to work on the January 1992 nor'easter, the one that I believe you hinted might be a subtropical storm. It seems that 1992 is forever away in terms of reanalysis. Did you ever make a rainfall map for that storm though? I saw its placeholder here. --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 00:03, 19 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Some thoughts on what makes a basin[edit]

What makes a TC basin? It isnt by TCWC/RSMC since the borders between TCWCs in the Australian region are not very clear. (eg: Jakartas AoR ends at 10S in some parts and at 9S in others). It is also worth noting that the last inspection of NHC made it very clear that they wanted CPHC and NHC merged (Pg 19). So what makes a basin - i would personally recommend that its done logically by the RSMC AoRs (eg: WPAC 180-100E, AUS 90-160E etc).Jason Rees (talk) 17:58, 20 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

In some ways, NHC acts as if they already deal with the northwest quarter of the globe, TC wise. I've seen a refereed article try to demarkate the basins by areas of genesis. If you chose that route, there is a clear division around 120W in the northeast Pacific between the normal northeast Pacific genesis area south of Mexico and the storms which form farther westward, towards Hawai'i. The area around Australia and Indonesia is a mess...from what I've seen, TCs from the eastern section of the South Indian could easily be grouped with the Austrailian and southern Micronesian formations. Hey, I checked for the 1956 document, but I had no luck (although I did find something that might allow me to make an article for the July 1933 Texas tropical storm). It sounds cool though, especially since I love those older storms. BTW, I put this conversation under the "Beryl" header, since I wasn't sure whether you saw my message on Beryl's talk page. Since you're the rainfall guru, I was wondering whether you thought if the rainfall before the storm formed (namely in Cuba, Bahamas, and south Florida) should be included and with such detail? I saw the edit summary you did, but I wanted some more thoughts on that, if that's OK. I hope all is well! ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 18:47, 6 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

US wettest TC's[edit]

BTW you wouldnt happen to know what the technical memorandum, you were talking to Hink about was called or any of the details of it as all for it. I might be able to spare the time to go hunt for a copy.Jason Rees (talk) 01:58, 6 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Its either: [1] or [2].Jason Rees (talk) 22:50, 6 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed especially as its cited in an article in Weather, talking about Jamaican Rainfall from TC's.Jason Rees (talk) 23:51, 6 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Looking at that link again, its apparently 305 pages, so it might be easier to add the useful data to the point maxima.Jason Rees (talk) 00:44, 7 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Preciseness[edit]

Um surely if we are on about Preciseness then the inches should be 0 D.P., as well since as one of my former science tutors would say we have to do conversions to the same level of preciseness.Jason Rees (talk) 00:18, 7 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe going to 1 D.P. for mm is best.Jason Rees (talk) 00:30, 7 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hey I almost forgot to tell you, but yesterday I reviewed History of Atlantic hurricane warnings, an article that you nominated for GA. I hope you will be able to fix/address my issues within the next 7 days, or else I may fail it. Regards,--12george1 (talk) 15:35, 10 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi[edit]

Over the last few days, ive been going through that report and have spotted a discrepancy between your Maxima and it, over Hurricane Florence's 1953 Rainfall in Lockhart Alabama. According to the book it peaked at 13.6" (Pg: 178/188), however using NCDC data you have it peaking as 14.71. Do you happen to know which is more reliable/right?.Jason Rees (talk) 03:10, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

They might be using different date sets. In that case, they're both right, and the decision is yours. =)

July 1933 tropical storm[edit]

Heya DR! I'm continuing my work on the 1933 AHS, and I came across something (usual discrepancy between sources). MWR says 22.3 inches of rain, but HPC says 21.3 inches. How come the inch difference? I'm mostly concerned because there is no HPC page to actually cite it to, since it appears that storm never got a proper page (and I'm not a fan of citing images). ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 15:04, 15 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Why is it always a one inch discrepancy? When I get to work next week I'll check into your and Jason's discrepancies within the worksheets. In his case, it's likely that I used a longer time period than the 1956 report. In your case, Cline may have made an error in math. This report from 1956 agrees with my amount. Yay? Thegreatdr (talk) 16:41, 15 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Cool, I'll go with that HPC report then! Now I have a textual source, yay indeed! --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 16:43, 15 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Great job with getting List of wettest tropical cyclones in the United States up to featured status! I've nominated it to go up on the main page and some objections have been raised here.
