Biting

Thank you for endeavouring to help out at the Edit Warring Noticeboard. Please note that the user you were advising is very new, having made only a hundred edits to the encyclopedia. Particularly with newer users, it is often better to take a nicer tone and be certain of your information. Specifically, edit warring is much broader than just the three-revert rule. @ User:DragonflySixtyseven Please note that your rolling back of templates across multiple pages without review from others is an act of vandalism and will be reported as such. AlanS (talk) 14:45, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
@AlanS: um... no. Admins are entitle to remove speedy deletion templates. If you are unhappy, feel free to take to AfD. IMO, Dragonfly is correct in their point about article's notability. --Mdann52talk to me! 14:56, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
@AlanS:Since speedy deletion was declined by an administrator then you should send the pages to AfD or consider a different approach. Restoring the tag after it was declined it is not the correct approach. IMO on the articles: We can consider merging them but since they are an important search item, deletion is out of discussion. -- Magioladitis (talk) 14:59, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
(edit conflict) Actually, anyone outside the article creator is entitled to remove speedy deletion tags if the criteria provided is not valid. In this case you used both no context and no content, which does not apply to the articles in question. AlanS, please be more careful in your nominations. I would suggest you read WP:CSD again to better familiarize yourself with the criteria. The are quite narrowly worded, and pages must explicitly meet the criteria for nomination. Also ensure when you report a page at AIV that the edits in question are in fact vandalism. --kelapstick(bainuu) 15:03, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
@Mdann52:, @Magioladitis:, I didn't realise Dragonfly is an administrator. I thought he was a person primarily interested in the pages engaged in warring to keep their existence. I'm new to this. I'll leave the articles as are for someone who is more experienced. @Kelapstick: I will take you advice on-board. AlanS (talk) 15:08, 8 July 2014 (UTC)

Speedy deletion declined: Bunnyman 2

Hello AlanS. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Bunnyman 2, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: The page does not meet A1 or A3, I would reccomend WP:PROD or WP:AFD. Thank you. kelapstick(bainuu) 15:07, 8 July 2014 (UTC)

Speedy deletion declined: State road D060 (Turkey)

Hello AlanS. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of State road D060 (Turkey), a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: See the note from Bbb23 below Thank you. kelapstick(bainuu) 15:10, 8 July 2014 (UTC)

Kelapstick's decline and mine overlapped (he won). I'll be just a little more forceful. You tagged the article using three criteria, A1, A3, and A7. What context was lacking to mark it as an A1? The context was absolutely clear. Similarly, it was not empty per A3. It wasn't even particlarly short. Finally, A7 never applies to roads, places, etc. Please familiarize yourself more with the criteria and what they mean.--Bbb23 (talk) 15:16, 8 July 2014 (UTC)

Power Stations

A lot of places on this signpost, but none of them can be speedy deleted

A power station is a difficult one - is it an organisation (which can be A7ed) or a building (which can't)? I took the view that something like Battersea Power Station changed ownership several times but the building was still notable throughout this. In any case, there is a Times of India source which further suggests deletion will require a full consensus. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 12:50, 9 July 2014 (UTC)

@Ritchie333:, I did a bunch of power stations because I took the view that they were organisations comprising of the staff that worked in them. As you say though there was a news report about it. Missed that one. Thx. AlanS (talk) 12:53, 9 July 2014 (UTC)
Okay. I see a number of other people have seen other problems with you calling CSDs. I'd recommend the following guidelines:
  • A1 must be utterly incomprehensible : "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" would qualify
  • A3 must be completely devoid of prose. Even one word disqualifies it.
  • A7 must obviously have no hope whatsoever of being proved notable. If you think you may be able to find a news or book source, even if not present in the article, that generally disqualifies the speedy. It doesn't necessarily disqualify it from AfD, but remember that "redirect" is an option from there, whereas it isn't from speedy. A single entry in a reliable source generally can arise argument to at least a redirect. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 13:04, 9 July 2014 (UTC)

I have declined your speedy deletion nomination for Muratti tobacco. Although poorly written, I believe the article is a rather neutral desciption of the branding and marketing of this cigarette brand. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 13:39, 9 July 2014 (UTC)

"attack page"

I've declined your speedy on Children's immigration crisis. Not only did it not meet the speedy criteria, I don't even see a good faith argument that such a speedy could possibly apply.—Kww(talk) 13:44, 9 July 2014 (UTC)

@Kww:It doesn't seem to you to be an attack on people migrating from Mexico to the United States? The use of the word "Illegal" is particularly telling. In that case I will list at AfD. AlanS (talk) 13:47, 9 July 2014 (UTC)
Absolutely not. "Illegal immigrant", "illegal immigration", and even simply "illegals" may not be the most politically correct choice of words, but they certainly aren't attack words in that context.—Kww(talk) 13:50, 9 July 2014 (UTC)

AIV

Don't do this [1] again. Bad faith reports will get you blocked. Acroterion (talk) 13:52, 9 July 2014 (UTC)

@Acroterion:, restoring against a template telling you specifically not to is not considered vandalism? AlanS (talk) 13:55, 9 July 2014 (UTC)
Fred appears to have accidentally removed the speedy template, then restored it in good faith when he realized what happened. That's not vandalism. Acroterion (talk) 13:59, 9 July 2014 (UTC)
OK. AlanS (talk) 14:02, 9 July 2014 (UTC)

I've assisted Cutest Penguin by expanding this a bit from the sources and re-sectioning it, although it's still a work in progress. I suggest you take another look, and if you still think it looks non-notable, take it to AfD. Yngvadottir (talk) 14:47, 9 July 2014 (UTC)

I disagree that the subject qualifies for CSD criteria A7 and G11, because there is a PC World news source mentioning him. However, it does qualify for G12 as being a blatant copyright violation of that source. What's more worrying is that you didn't notice that a bot had tagged the article as a potential copyvio, which was subsequently blanked by an IP. You should check the article's history to see what activity has happened on it, as CSDs apply to every revision of an article, not just the latest one. Otherwise a vandal could blank a page and tag it with CSD A3, which obviously isn't what we want. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 15:16, 9 July 2014 (UTC)

to clarify, note that the article was deleted, but for the proper reason, that it was a copyvio. Copyvio is a more critical matter here than almost anything else. DGG ( talk ) 04:42, 10 July 2014 (UTC)

Warning

Do not, under any circumstances, make false accusations of vandalism. Such offensive dishonesty will end very badly for you. I'll report it next time, so I look forward to seeing what laughable justification you will come up with for calling these edits vandalism. 190.161.186.94 (talk) 10:59, 10 July 2014 (UTC)

@190.161.186.94:, go ahead I dare you. I'd love to see how you explain away referring to me as a 'dickhead' in an edit summary as acceptable behavior. AlanS (talk) 11:09, 10 July 2014 (UTC)
(edit conflict)@190.161.186.94: No comment on the diffs, but you are hardly perfect yourself in this dispute. Nothing here is actionable, and it is in no one's interest. --Mdann52talk to me! 11:13, 10 July 2014 (UTC)
Yes, because spending some time to improve an article and then getting reverted for no reason obviously shouldn't make anyone angry, should it, Mdann52? And making false accusations of vandalism is perfectly fine by you, I guess? A valid tactic in the world of Wikipedia? To be at best ignored and at worst encouraged. I thank you for making things clear. 190.161.186.94 (talk) 11:19, 10 July 2014 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) While 190 should not have put profanity in his edit summaries, I looked at the edits they was talking about, and they are very obviously an attempt to improve the quality of prose in the article, and removing a paragraph that was unverifiable due to a lack of references. There was no vandalism, which is always a blatant and obvious attempt to compromise the integrity of Wikipedia. Blanking a page and replacing it with nonsense is obvious vandalism, but if somebody replaced the first sentence of Abbey Road with "Abbey Road is a rubbish album by Hitler and Pol Pot released in 1839", I would probably consider that vandalism, even though it contains correctly written English that broadly conforms to our Manual of style. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 11:41, 10 July 2014 (UTC)

Speedies

Yu Yongfu & Liang Jie have a clear claim to significance as CTO & CEO of major company; they are however copyvio & I marked them for deletion as such. he article on the company is copyvio, but similarly has a claim to significance and is not hopelessly promotional. UC Browser does not seem hopelssly promotional,. except for some removable puffery, and I did no immediately find copyvio, tho it might be there. . For the product, you might use afd, but it might even pass. (I would suggest checking all articles for copyvio before tagging them for other factors--copyvio is an absolutely firm basis for deletion ) DGG ( talk ) 11:30, 10 July 2014 (UTC)

I've got the URL comparing tools bookmarked now. Should make it easier. AlanS (talk) 11:35, 10 July 2014 (UTC)
Actually, the basic way is a simple google search :) that's what I did. DGG ( talk ) 14:12, 10 July 2014 (UTC)
@DGG: Google are evil. They're reading your mind. Don't you know? AlanS (talk) 14:18, 10 July 2014 (UTC)
@DGG: What sort of percentage of lifting of wording are we looking for to be a clear copyvio? AlanS (talk) 14:39, 10 July 2014 (UTC)

I see no substantial copyvio in the current versions of Libamc or NetTradeX, and neither do the tools, and I remind you that A7 does not apply to computer softwarre'. (Itis possible there may be copies from internal pages of the site--I have not yet checked in detail.

More generally, it's not a matter of percentage. Copyvio can be either in the exact wording, or the exact parallelism of sentence arrangement . But it does not have to be exact: there is also WP:Close paraphrase, which if extensive enough we treat as copyvio. Somethings can be expressed only one way, and some things , such as a list of people or products or features, have no intellectual content,-- neither are copyvios. Sometimes copyvio applies only to a removable part of the article, and then we delete only the copied part, not the article. See WP:COPYRIGHT for a fuller explanation. Until you have a much fuller understanding of this, and of deletion policy in general, you should not be be nominating articles for deletion. I would be very reluctant to bring this back to WP:AN/I--but I consider that what was said there amounts to a final warning. I am reluctant to take unilateral action after something was discussed there, but If you do not stop improperly nominating articles for deletion, I will either reopen the question or if necessary block to stop you and go there for a confirmation. (and I do not see how you can do it properly unless you stop and learn) The tolerated error rate is 5%. A beginning might do 10%, but anything higher than that is justifiable cause for alarm. And a continued refusal to recognize the problem is certainly not a good sign. It raises the question of whether the problem is lack of understanding, or lack of willingness to follow advice--but neither of these is acceptable.

I'm going to check back this evening, and agin next morning, and i will do what I find necessary. I'm prepared to help you, but the first step in helping you is getting you to read the policy, slowly, carefully, and word for word, and checking each action you do against the wording. I've been doing deletions as a major part of my activity here for years, and I check back frequently to avoid errors. Reading & referring back to the instructions is not an admission of weakness. Putting it in action properly is like taking an examination--except this is not just academic, for what you do affects people. Discourage contributors unnecessarily is harmful to WP; we will gradually die out without them, DGG ( talk ) 15:14, 10 July 2014 (UTC)

@DGG:, I've just read the rest of the AN/I conversation. I'd only read half of it previously before retiring for the night. I'll do a bit of reading before nominating anything else as suggested. AlanS (talk) 10:39, 11 July 2014 (UTC)

@Shrike:, I don't believe I have edited any pages relating to the Arab–Israeli conflict recently. I have nominated some for deletion at AfD. Surely that is a different matter? AlanS (talk) 15:28, 11 July 2014 (UTC)

No its not, AFD is covered by the sanctions.I didn't imply that you did something wrong --Shrike (talk)/WP:RX 16:01, 11 July 2014 (UTC)
as to whether or not you did something wrong, I have a slightly different opinioin. I believe the nominating for deletion the articles that are one sided on the "Israel" side ([2]) , while voting to "keep" the articles that are one sided on the "Palestinians" side ([3]) is not just gross hypocrisy, but a violation of Wikipedia's requirement to edit in a NPOV manner, and might quiet possible be viewed as tendentious editing. Brad Dyer (talk) 16:08, 11 July 2014 (UTC)
@Brad Dyer:, you've clearly demonstrated just how NPOV you are by your statement. I'd be careful about throwing around allegations of partiality if I were you. AlanS (talk) 16:15, 11 July 2014 (UTC)
Really? how exactly have I done that? Pointing out your demonstrated and documented hypocrisy does not mean I have NPOV issues. Brad Dyer (talk) 16:32, 11 July 2014 (UTC)
I have no desire to argue with you any further. AlanS (talk) 16:38, 11 July 2014 (UTC)
I think that's a wise decision on your part, as your behavior here is not only hypocritical, but could quite possible lead to you being blocked from further editing. Brad Dyer (talk) 16:40, 11 July 2014 (UTC)
You really don't know when to shut up do you? AlanS (talk) 16:42, 11 July 2014 (UTC)
@Shrike:, I didn't meant to imply that you implied that I had done anything wrong. AlanS (talk) 16:19, 11 July 2014 (UTC)
  • I need to point out that the templated notice above is required to be placed on the page of any editor at all involved. It's considered a matter of fairness to make everyone aware of the special requirements. As it says at the bottom, it does not imply anything wrong, and there is no need to respond to it directly. Brad Dyer, and Alan S, it is not to be used as a basis for accusation or recriminations--it is rather designed to prevent such. Brad, you are in my opinion coming rather close to the line of WP:NPA, and I advise you as an admin not to carry discussions about this subject onto individual user talk pages. Alan, it is not helpful to try to get the last word; the best way to deal with comments like this is simply not to answer. DGG ( talk ) 17:35, 11 July 2014 (UTC)

@AlanS: I think this is related, but I don't understand the templated warning at all here. How exactly was this "disruption"? Not to mention templating the regulars and using such a harsh warning with no prior notice. --k6ka (talk | contribs) 17:54, 11 July 2014 (UTC)

@K6ka:, my aim was not to be harsh, apologises if I cam across as such, I noticed a bit of back and forth editing on a page that is in relation to then Palestinian-Israeli conflict and therefore subject to 1RR and thought I'd warn all users recently involved. Again I did not mean to be harsh. AlanS (talk) 18:00, 11 July 2014 (UTC)
Well, I would've preferred a hand-written warning instead of a template added using Twinkle, especially because I did not know of this issue. I find it very difficult not to revert this edit, which replaced sourced content with unsourced ones. And as such, the template was written with no good faith in mind, but especially for editors that are trying to do the right thing, assuming good faith must come before assuming bad faith. --k6ka (talk | contribs) 18:06, 11 July 2014 (UTC)
And also to point out that the reversion of vandalism is an exemption to any revert rule. --k6ka (talk | contribs) 18:10, 11 July 2014 (UTC)

You need to think more about what you're doing. You are tagging heaps of obviously notable people for deletion. I don't know if you're doing this deliberately to get articles deleted (which is what it seems like) or you honestly don't know. Read WP:NFOOTBALL and WP:ATHLETE before abusing the system further. The article is one sentence long, and is referenced inline to a fully-formatted reliable source displayed in the references section. {{BLP sources}} is for BLP articles "that need additional references, and therefore in need of immediate attention": this one has no unsourced facts, so cannot need additional references. {{More footnotes}} is for articles with enough RS but with "an inappropriate combination of inline citations and general references": this article is entirely referenced inline. The two tags are incompatible with each other, and neither applies on Nurdin Bakari. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 11:53, 6 August 2014 (UTC)

Incorrect tagging?

Hi Alan. I've noticed that you are tagging multiple articles with {{more footnotes}}. However, this template displays the message "This article includes a list of references, but its sources remain unclear because it has insufficient inline citations." This is supposed to be used when there are links in a references/sources section and it is not clear to what part of the article they refer. However, you are using it on articles that only have inline citations, e.g. Anjali Bhagwat or Ronny Aloema. Could you avoid using it when inline citations are provided? I think you should be using {{More references}} instead. Thanks, Number 57 13:34, 6 August 2014 (UTC)

No worries. AlanS (talk) 13:36, 6 August 2014 (UTC)

Fiona Boyes not copyvio

If you look closer at http://abccountry.net.au/artist/fiona-boyes, you will see that it says that the text there is automatically sourced from Wikipedia. Even though the page it's on says 'copyright' at the bottom, that only applies to the non-Wikipedia part, and the WP stuff is very correctly linked and acknowledged, and even mentions CC-BY-SA. Peridon (talk) 15:45, 7 August 2014 (UTC)

Speedy deletion

I've noticed that you have tagged my article to be deleted when I already had a tag stating I needed to add the citation not only to the footer but also into the main paragraph itself. Before I could add in the needed citations you tag my article! Instead you could have just told me to revise my references. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Acoins601 (talkcontribs) 00:20, 8 August 2014 (UTC)

Your edit warring at Whitehouse Institute of Design ‎

Please follow the BRD process. I don't think you are stupid, and I don't think you missed the ‎point raised on the discussion page. The source - recent Sydney Morning Herald - goes to some lengths to make it clear that the teacher is pursuing a political agenda and his employment terminated after leaking the original story. Presenting his comments as if they were unbiased and neutral is misrepresenting the source. Kindly do not edit-war while discussion is ongoing. --Pete (talk) 07:32, 9 August 2014 (UTC)

Speedy deletion declined: Bhaben Barua

Hello AlanS. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Bhaben Barua, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: The article makes a credible assertion of importance or significance, sufficient to pass A7. Thank you. Shirt58 (talk) 13:41, 10 August 2014 (UTC)

Deletion of "Blog" section of Australia's most notable blogger.

Looking at this section blanking, you've removed almost all reference to one of Australia's most widely-read and notable blogs. You appear not to have responded to the material on the talk page. Bolt's blog is a popular and integral part of his media presence. The fact that he has it and it's well-patronised is notable, not that it's a blog like other blogs. It is advertised as "Australia’s most-read political blog"[5] and it is syndicated. There's plenty of mentions from non-Murdoch sources. The ABC, for instance, describes him as a columnist and blogger.[6] I don't read it, but it looks like a rich part of Australia's political commentary.

Could you please explain your actions? --Pete (talk) 06:04, 16 August 2014 (UTC)

@Skyring:, I have absolutely no interest in explaining anything at all to you here when you obviously haven't taken the effort to discover that I was the last person to have written anything on the material covering the blog in the talk page ([7]), let alone respond to what I have written. Don't you think that the talk page of the article itself is a more productive place for such discussions than my user space, which I have specifically told you to keep off? (I don't think I would of ever asked anyone to keep of my user space, but given your rude demand I keep off yours) AlanS (talk) 06:50, 16 August 2014 (UTC)
That's both incorrect and irrelevant. Do you have any reason at all, or you just deleted something because you didn't like the look of it? --Pete (talk) 07:03, 16 August 2014 (UTC)
If you bothered to read what I actually wrote in the talk page, you wouldn't need to be asking here. Once again given that you have previously rudely demanded that I stay off your user space, I request you do that same in relation to my user space. AlanS (talk) 07:06, 16 August 2014 (UTC)

Topic ban

Alan, per the outcome of this ANI discussion, I have closed the discussion by enacting the following topic ban: "AlanS is hereby topic banned from deletion activities, specifically as they relate to new page patrol, broadly construed for a period of three months." For practical purposes, this ban will end on November 16, 2014. Thank you for your cooperation, and may your editing in other areas be fruitful. God bless. Go Phightins! 03:08, 16 August 2014 (UTC)

  • Addendum - during your period of being banned from this area, you may wish to spend some time learning/expanding knowledge of appropriate practices. If you would be interested in doing this through a formalized mentorship, I will be happy to work to arrange something. Let me know. Thank you. Go Phightins! 05:07, 16 August 2014 (UTC)
@Go Phightins!:, might be something I might be interested in. What's involved? AlanS (talk) 09:01, 16 August 2014 (UTC)
@Go Phightins!:, One question. Does the topic ban include nominating via the AfD process or engaging in discussion of articles nominated via AfD process? AlanS (talk) 09:01, 16 August 2014 (UTC)
First question: A mentorship could really entail whatever you wanted it to. Potentially we could set up "fake articles" in your userspace and discuss appropriate courses of action for dealing with them, we could discuss (not act on so as not to violate your topic ban) real articles, etc. Basically the goal would be that by the time your topic ban expires, you would be equipped to be an effective NPP-er - we certainly need them. Second question: editors in the discussion specifically mentioned PROD and CSD as they pertained to your NPPing, so the ban I enacted covers "deletion activities, specifically as they relate to new page patrol, broadly construed" ... therefore, I would say you may not nominate articles for AfD, but you may participate in existing AfD discussions. If any administrator or other editor were to question your participation in AfD discussions, have them talk to me. Go Phightins! 12:39, 16 August 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for clarifying on the topic ban. That's pretty much as I thought it would be, I just didn't want to accidentally violate it by commenting on a AfD nomination, if the topic ban did mean that I shouldn't be doing so.
I'll think about the mentorship bit and let you know if I'm interested. AlanS (talk) 12:55, 16 August 2014 (UTC)

Drive by tagging

Please stop misusing the WP:Page curation tools to WP:DRIVEBY-tag gymnast stubs and the like that already have multiple citations but almost no information yet. If some particular fact in the sparse information there isn't sourceable in any of the cited sources yet, flag that problem inline, with {{citation needed}}. No two-sentence stub needs 5+ sources, unless it's making widely disparate claims and relying on extremely shallow sources that can't be used to source more than one trivial factoid at a time, which does not appear at all to be the case here.  — SMcCandlish ¢ ≽ʌⱷ҅ʌ≼  10:49, 18 August 2014 (UTC)

PS: Tagging new pages, in particular, with {{Refimprove}}, {{Notability}} or other tags that are AfD/Prod magnets when placed on newly created stubs, is very likely to be interpreted as a violation of your topic ban. You can't evade a prohibition on engaging in deletion activities, especially in new pages patrolling, by doing things that are only kinda-sorta deletion activities. See WP:GAMING; if you attempt to game the system by pushing definitional boundaries of your topic ban, you're liable to find it expanded to include whatever it was you thought was just barely outside it.  — SMcCandlish ¢ ≽ʌⱷ҅ʌ≼  10:54, 18 August 2014 (UTC)
@SMcCandlish: I haven't looked at any gymnast stubs in weeks. Please refrain from saying that I am gaming the boundaries of my topic ban when that is simply not the case. AlanS (talk) 10:57, 18 August 2014 (UTC)
My bad! I was looking at the wrong line in some diffs, and thought your gymnast edits were more recent. Please do take my first note to heart though; while not as recent as I thought, the drive-by tags were still inappropriate and unhelpful.  — SMcCandlish ¢ ≽ʌⱷ҅ʌ≼  11:03, 18 August 2014 (UTC)
Further I find your accusation that I'm gaming the boundaries of my topic ban to be abusive. Any further conduct from you that I find abusive may result in a report to AN/I. AlanS (talk) 10:59, 18 August 2014 (UTC)
We don't need melodrama, thanks. But go right ahead and file a frivolous complaint at ANI, and see how WP:BOOMERANG works on those who do so. There isn't anything "abusive" about making requests and observations about a templating pattern (even if the second of observation, about its relationship to a topic ban, happens to be incorrect due to getting the dates wrong). In the interim, see also WP:NPA2; all the reasoning in it applies equally to any general cases of "don't accuse others of being abusive for suggesting you've been making questionable edits".  — SMcCandlish ¢ ≽ʌⱷ҅ʌ≼  11:19, 18 August 2014 (UTC)
My point wasn't you commenting about me applying templates. What I found abusive was your accusation of me violating a ban, when I had done no such thing. You apologised. End of story. AlanS (talk) 11:24, 18 August 2014 (UTC)
It's still not "abusive", just an error. If you run to administrative noticeboards with invalid complaints, you'll be sanctioned (in the negative sense) for it (I learned that the hard way a couple of years ago, and the complaint in question wasn't even completely invalid, just stale). If you habitually label others "abusive" just for making criticisms you don't think are accurate, you'll be sanctioned for it eventually. If you frequently make AN/I threats in response to criticism (or errors, or anything, really), you'll be sanctioned for that, too, probably sooner than later. It's sufficient to note and correct an error without making histrionic or menacing retorts about it. Seriously, see the image and caption at WP:NPA2.  :-/  — SMcCandlish ¢ ≽ʌⱷ҅ʌ≼  11:32, 18 August 2014 (UTC)
At least have sufficient evidence before making serious accusations of topic ban evasions. AlanS (talk) 11:39, 18 August 2014 (UTC)

Edit War

Hello,

I am fairly new on this site but I object (greatly) to your use of the term 'edit war' to discuss my ONE revert of you.

It would seem to be a gross exaggeration.

Valiant Patriot (talk) 10:48, 26 August 2014 (UTC)

Please if you wish to talk, we're already got a discussion in the talk page. You seem to know where it is as you've already written there. AlanS (talk) 10:50, 26 August 2014 (UTC)
Hello this is a personal issue between two editors, me and you. You appeared to have used terms such as 'unconstructive' and 'edit warring' to character assassinate me on the talkpage. I reverted you once. To call that an 'edit war' is the most gross and unjust distortion of reality I've seen in a while. I was advised to refrain from using terms such as 'partisan' recently by a kind editor, and I would like to offer similar advice to you. The use of the term 'edit warring' to attack an editor who reverts you ONCE is inappropriate in every way. Thankyou. Valiant Patriot (talk) 10:53, 26 August 2014 (UTC)
(Also, seeing as you've reverted me TWICE, are you guilty of double edit warring?) Valiant Patriot (talk) 10:53, 26 August 2014 (UTC)
OK. Even one revert can be considered edit warring. Especially if there is an invite to discuss the matter in a talk page and you just don't think you should have to discuss it. The way editing often works in Wikipedia is along the lines of WP:BRD, that is someone will see something that needs correcting. They will be bold and make the change. Every now and then someone will disagree and revert. Now for you simply revert back again, without discussing it, when there is invitation to do so, can be considered to be edit warring. Now I do realise that some of the material isn't written the best, however as I said in the article's talk page. That is not an argument for removal. It's an argument for rewording, rewriting or re-organising like you did in Rudd Government (2013) where I think you did a good job. AlanS (talk) 11:01, 26 August 2014 (UTC)

It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Biography feedback requested

Your input is requested about an RFC regarding Donald Trump. Here is a link directly to that RFC. The lead of that biography currently says, "Many of his statements in interviews, on Twitter, and at campaign rallies have been controversial." The RFC proposes to insert the words "or false" at the end of that sentence. Thank you in advance for participating. If you have the time, there is a second RFC at that talk page which proposes to instead add the words "or hyperbolic".Anythingyouwant (talk) 01:07, 4 September 2016 (UTC)

New deal for page patrollers

Hi TarnishedPath,

In order to better control the quality of new pages, keep out the spam, and welcome the genuine newbies, the current system we introduced in 2011 is being updated and improved. The documentation and tutorials have also been revised and given a facelift. Most importantly a new user group New Page Reviewer has been created.

Under the new rule, you may find that you are temporarily unable to mark new pages as reviewed. However, this is nothing to worry about - most current experienced patrollers are being accorded the the new right without the need to apply, and if you have significant previous experience of patrolling new pages, we strongly encourage you to apply for the new right as soon as possible - we need all the help we can get, and we are now providing a dynamic, supportive environment for your work.

Find out more about this exiting new user right now at New Page Reviewers and be sure to read the new tutorial before applying. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 04:28, 13 November 2016 (UTC)

Custom signature fix needed

Hi there! You have a custom signature set in your account preferences. A change to Wikipedia's software has made your current custom signature incompatible with the software.

The problem: Your signature contains a syntax error, specifically formatting tags that are missing a matching ending tag.

The solutions: You can reset your signature to the default, or you can fix your signature.

Solution 1: Reset your signature to the default:
  1. Find the signature section in the first tab of Special:Preferences.
  2. Uncheck the box (☑︎→☐) that says "Treat the above as wiki markup."
  3. Remove anything in the Signature: text box.
  4. Click the blue "Save" button at the bottom of the page. (The red "Restore all default settings" button will reset all of your preference settings, not just the signature.)
Solution 2: Fix your custom signature:
  1. Find the signature section in the first tab of Special:Preferences.
  2. Remove the (currently non-functional, but which causes an error message to display on pages where you use it) italic markup, or make other edits to make the signature appear how you want it to appear.
  3. Click Save to update to your newly fixed signature.

More information is available at Wikipedia:Signatures#Customizing how everyone sees your signature. If you have followed these instructions and still want help, please leave a message at Wikipedia talk:Signatures or respond here. Thanks. – Jonesey95 (talk) 03:55, 8 August 2020 (UTC)

Notice of edit warring noticeboard discussion

Information icon Hello. This message is being sent to inform you that there is currently a discussion involving you at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Edit warring regarding a possible violation of Wikipedia's policy on edit warring. The thread is Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Edit warring#User:AlanS reported by User:Gugrak (Result: ). Thank you. Gugrak (talk) 13:29, 5 June 2023 (UTC)

June 2023

Stop icon with clock
You have been blocked from editing for a period of 48 hours for edit warring and violating the three-revert rule, as you did at Ben Roberts-Smith. Once the block has expired, you are welcome to make useful contributions.
During a dispute, you should first try to discuss controversial changes and seek consensus. If that proves unsuccessful, you are encouraged to seek dispute resolution, and in some cases it may be appropriate to request page protection.
If you think there are good reasons for being unblocked, please read the guide to appealing blocks, then add the following text at the bottom of your talk page: {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}.  Bbb23 (talk) 13:49, 5 June 2023 (UTC)
User:Bbb23, I reverted 3 times, Can you explain how I'm in breach of WP:3RR?AlanStalk 13:59, 5 June 2023 (UTC)
You need to read WP:3RR, in particular the part that says "An editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page—whether involving the same or different material—within a 24-hour period." (bolding added by me).--Bbb23 (talk) 14:43, 5 June 2023 (UTC)
@Bbb23 ok will do. Apologises. Ps, you may wish to review the page's edit history, as Gugrak has now reverted 4 times. AlanStalk 14:52, 5 June 2023 (UTC)
User:Bbb23, I'd like to request all record of this block be removed from my record as an exception #3 to WP:3RR as user:gugrak was a sockpuppet and reverts beyoynd 3RR are excepted. AlanStalk 13:53, 7 June 2023 (UTC)

Introduction to contentious topics

You have recently edited a page related to articles about living or recently deceased people, and edits relating to the subject (living or recently deceased) of such biographical articles, a topic designated as contentious. This standard message is designed as an introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially-designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have special powers in order to reduce disruption to the project.

Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

  • adhere to the purposes of Wikipedia;
  • comply with all applicable policies and guidelines;
  • follow editorial and behavioural best practice;
  • comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and
  • refrain from gaming the system.

Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template.

Disambiguation link notification for June 14

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Ben Roberts-Smith, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page The Advertiser. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

It's OK to remove this message. Also, to stop receiving these messages, follow these opt-out instructions. Thanks, DPL bot (talk) 06:02, 14 June 2023 (UTC)

Stop icon

Your recent editing history at Ben Roberts-Smith shows that you are currently engaged in an edit war; that means that you are repeatedly changing content back to how you think it should be, when you have seen that other editors disagree. To resolve the content dispute, please do not revert or change the edits of others when you are reverted. Instead of reverting, please use the talk page to work toward making a version that represents consensus among editors. The best practice at this stage is to discuss, not edit-war; read about how this is done. If discussions reach an impasse, you can then post a request for help at a relevant noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, you may wish to request temporary page protection.

Being involved in an edit war can result in you being blocked from editing—especially if you violate the three-revert rule, which states that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Undoing another editor's work—whether in whole or in part, whether involving the same or different material each time—counts as a revert. Also keep in mind that while violating the three-revert rule often leads to a block, you can still be blocked for edit warring—even if you do not violate the three-revert rule—should your behavior indicate that you intend to continue reverting repeatedly. Suspicious IP

FYI, seems like there's another IP [8] which could be related to the previous socks. Based in the UAE and editing only relating to BRS. I've notified [9] Bbb23 for further action. Carter00000 (talk) 08:27, 17 June 2023 (UTC)

Thankyou for your advice. I'm surprised then haven't shown up anywhere I'm having a discussion. Perhaps They've learnt that will give them away. AlanStalk 08:35, 17 June 2023 (UTC)
I have no idea what someone in the UAE interest in an former Australian solder is, that they keep coming back block after block. AlanStalk 08:42, 17 June 2023 (UTC)
They probably just like to mess around with people.
If you're interested, you may go into your "Preferences" settings and enable the "IP Information" tool under "Beta features". This will show the IP information (including their location) under each IP on lists of edits. It should help you spot potential socks more easily. Carter00000 (talk) 08:55, 17 June 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for that, I'll have a look how different it looks. AlanStalk 09:15, 17 June 2023 (UTC)

RFC Canvassing

It appears that you have been canvassing—leaving messages on a biased choice of users' talk pages to notify them of an ongoing community decision, debate, or vote. While friendly notices are allowed, they should be limited and nonpartisan in distribution and should reflect a neutral point of view. Please do not post notices which are indiscriminately cross-posted, which espouse a certain point of view or side of a debate, or which are selectively sent only to those who are believed to hold the same opinion as you. Remember to respect Wikipedia's principle of consensus-building by allowing decisions to reflect the prevailing opinion among the community at large. Thank you. Carter00000 (talk) 06:45, 17 June 2023 (UTC)

I'd remind you to presume good faith and not caste aspersions. It is clear that notices I left reflect a NPOV, informing the recipients that they may be interested in the discussion. AlanStalk 07:34, 17 June 2023 (UTC)
I've posted notices on more editors pages. Some who I think would be against, some who I have absolutely no idea and maybe one who would be for but again I don't know. AlanStalk 09:31, 17 June 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for doing this. I've struck the original notice and "canvassed tag" on one of the users which I placed. I've also added a explanation at the end of the discussion to explain the actions. Carter00000 (talk) 09:59, 17 June 2023 (UTC)
I would have done this sooner but I have toddlers and I was out with them. I don't find myself with much spare time these days which is why I only casually edit. AlanStalk 10:05, 17 June 2023 (UTC)

Groomsman

I've raised a discussion at the BLP Noticeboard here. If you feel that I am off-beam in this, please add your voice. In the meantime, you should not re-add this contentious material until we find a consensus. Thank you. --Pete (talk) 07:30, 12 July 2023 (UTC)

@Skyring this was rather premature given I hadn't edited after my last message in talk. I've actually only just finished work, about to have dinner and was going to see if I could write up something and propose it in talk once the terrors have gone to bed. Again, very premature. Also your accusation that I was insisting on reinserting "groom" or "grooming" into the article when the conversation had moved on from that is poor form. AlanStalk 07:49, 12 July 2023 (UTC)
Well, good on you. I based my report on your documented behaviour and not your promises. May you live up to your aims. --Pete (talk) 07:56, 12 July 2023 (UTC)
@Skyring, documented behaviour? Really? It's two days ago that those words were removed and I haven't reinserted them since. Please aim your discussion about what is actually happening. AlanStalk 08:00, 12 July 2023 (UTC)

It took me a while at Talk:Andy Ngo#ngo lost his civil suit to cotton on that the last post in that thread was you as you were using your other username in posts above. Thanks. Doug Weller talk 09:34, 8 September 2023 (UTC)

@Doug Weller, my apologies if it caused any confusion. I wasn't chopping and changing. I had a global username change partway through the discussion. TarnishedPathtalk 09:42, 8 September 2023 (UTC)
Thanks. That makes a lot more sense! Sorry to bother you. Doug Weller talk 10:56, 8 September 2023 (UTC)
All good. Take care. TarnishedPathtalk 10:59, 8 September 2023 (UTC)

Criticism vs. hate

Hi, I think you missed my point when you reverted my edit on the article about Neil Erikson. My point wasn't that he hasn't attacked Islam, my point was that his Nazi-aligned attacks on Islam constitutes such bigoted hate that it cannot be described as just "criticism". Thismess (talk) 16:06, 29 September 2023 (UTC)

Hate filled attack is a form of criticism. Just because it's not valid, doesn't make it not criticism. Surely, you don't need this pointing out to you? TarnishedPathtalk 16:40, 29 September 2023 (UTC)

Proud Boys ideology

It would be nice if the citations of the ideology section in the infobox included the quote that supported the statement

It's very time consuming having to read through the entire PDF document just to see if the statement is actually supported by the source Trade (talk) 21:48, 30 September 2023 (UTC)

I'll bear that in mind and see if I can fix that up latter when I've put the children to bed. TarnishedPathtalk 03:43, 1 October 2023 (UTC)
