Esholt Sewage Works Railway[edit]

Response on talk page of Esholt Sewage Works Railway. Regards. The joy of all things (talk) 10:31, 16 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Tagishsimon - Happy with everything on the above referenced page. Bradfordale does seem to crop up a lot in a few things I have read, so I may just create a page about it. Unofficially, it is a Yorkshire Dale and an oddity as it flows north....
Regards. The joy of all things (talk) 18:59, 19 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Best get on with it, The joy of all things. Derbyshire seems to be intent on stealing the name. More seriously, I guess detail might be added to Bradford Beck. --Tagishsimon (talk) 13:00, 20 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Dragon[edit]

Welcome aboard! Do you want to enter the contest or just contribute independently? Probably a little late to catch Sturm and Cwm but you could still do well!♦ Dr. Blofeld 06:37, 20 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Dr. Blofeld. I planned to continue expanding SSSI stubs which a certain, ahem, Dr. Blofeld created some time ago (and to create those he missed). I thought I'd list the articles on Dragon because the efforts you're putting in to its organisation deserves a response. Beyond that, independent, probably :) Oh, and Frietjes put me right on Infobox SSSI for Welsh SSSIs, so thank you for that - very useful. --Tagishsimon (talk) 12:48, 20 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Haha, now they were stubby ;-) Yes, they're badly in need of expansion so kudos for doing it. You're welcome to join the contest and get points for doing it. There should be enough of the darned things to catch up with the leader!♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:04, 20 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Map of Vancouver, Washington[edit]

Hey, Tagishsimon. You've been so helpful with coordinates and maps. I was wondering if you might be able to make a locator map for Vancouver, Washington. I'm not good with coordinates, so whatever boundaries you think are appropriate is fine, but this is a city right on the other side of Portland, Oregon that has many articles, too. Thanks for your consideration. ---Another Believer (Talk) 15:17, 10 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Nice to hear from you, Another Believer. I'll do the map with pleasure in the next few hours & let you know. --Tagishsimon (talk) 19:34, 10 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I've done one of what looks like the centre of the city, Another Believer. I can do a larger map if you want to get into Minnehaha, McLoughlin Heights, Hazel Dell South, Walnut Grove, etc. Find it at the bottom of Wikipedia:WikiProject_Oregon/Graphics#Locator_maps; let me know if you find any problems with it. --Tagishsimon (talk) 19:55, 10 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Missing information[edit]

There are just so, so many keeps at Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2016 May 20#Template:Missing information. I think the community really likes this and thinks it's useful. Would you be terribly offended if I reversed my position on those grounds? And Nakon, I know you put work into that script. Perhaps it would have been best to wait, but it sure looked like a keep at the onset. Would you be annoyed if I reversed my position to keep on the grounds that it has come to light that the community values this template? Best, Anna Frodesiak (talk) 08:36, 25 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Not annoyed in the least, Anna Frodesiak. Clearly it's snowball close as keep, and if you fancy, you could close it down as that. They're all wrong, of course, but I'm cheerful :). --Tagishsimon (talk) 08:42, 25 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I am pleased that you are cheerful. I find it so hard to trust my own judgement when so many respected editors take an opposite view. I mean, they read our arguments and still feel Wikipedia is better off with the template. I must be wrong. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 08:49, 25 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I hate to think this is causing you any angst, Anna Frodesiak; you're very well entitled to your opinion. It's just big-endians versus little-endians. Either you think 'disfiguring' articles is a good thing or you don't. There's no right or wrong. Though to be clear, they are still wrong, since I am a little-endian and will not abide big-endian heresy. It's more important that we play nicely to improve the articles; and the part of their argument that does resonate - whether they made it or not - is that these tags are sufficient of an annoyance to spur action to cure the fault that gave rise to the application of template. Eventually. I wish we had won the argument, but I have read Don Quixote and accept we may have been tilting at windmills; whatever, I enjoyed the process. --Tagishsimon (talk) 10:18, 25 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for the late reply. No angst. I have my opinions, but they change when large numbers of people tell me I'm wrong. I still think it disfigures articles, but if encyclopedia-building Wikipedians want it, it must have value. Best wishes and thank you again. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 11:38, 2 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

2016 Wikimedia Foundation Executive Director Search Community Survey[edit]

Hi, I modified your answer at the reference desk. Hope you don't mind. If there's any issue, feel free to revert. What I was missing was clicking the "share" button. It should be clearer on there. It would be best if you could just highlight an area and click export and save rather than having to click share as well.♦ Dr. Blofeld 06:25, 4 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Agree; the UI is very poor. tbh, I've never got the export side to work - got the impression it was cooking up some sort of geo-format file with all the layer data in, but in my uses of it, export tends to resolve to a broken API message :( --Tagishsimon (talk) 11:16, 4 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I've reverted your edit to the Stratosphere Giant article, because, as the article says, "the tree's exact location was not disclosed to the public". I don't think we should be adding {{coord missing}} to articles about current or former record-holding, or other particularly notable, old or large trees, on the same principle that we do not add this template to certain high-value archeological monuments, to avoid giving this information to potential vandals. This is not to say that we should necessarily remove coordinates once they're added, as by that point the secret is out, but we shouldn't encourage their addition. I explicitly avoided tagging that article (see my edit comment): could you possibly review the other tree articles you tagged to check that no others have slipped through? -- The Anome (talk) 14:25, 7 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

West Country Contest[edit]

Wikipedia:WikiProject England/The West Country Challenge. Hi , don't know if this interests you. Currently three day focus is on Bristol, but anybody can contribute anything related to the West Country throughout three weeks and not compete for the daily prizes. There's probably a few SSSI's/missing ones too needing improvement work. You'll be pleased to know that stubs are prohibited for this ;-)♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:09, 8 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the response. ;-) Just waiting for somebody to drill 500 new stubs on early 20th century Bristol Rovers footballers ;-).

I'll tip off whatsisname. I'm sure he/she'll oblige. Sadly my Cornwall contributions were a couple of days premature - Stara Bridge and Stara Woods - and I'm tied up with Northumberland SSSIs, probably for a long long time. --Tagishsimon (talk) 01:18, 12 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

A request[edit]

Hi Tagishsimon, I've removed your posts on my talk page about LaMona and hers about you. Please don't post anything else on Wikipedia about her. That someone has identified themselves previously has no bearing on whether they want to do so now, and given that nothing hangs on it, it seems pointless to pursue it. Please regard it as a matter of courtesy, rather than policy. Also, please consider deleting anything you've written about her off-wiki so that this can die down. Map request: Vancouver[edit]

Hi Tagishsimon. Unless I am overlooking one, I don't see a great locator map for the city of Vancouver (British Columbia). See commons:Category:City locator maps of Greater Vancouver Area. Would you be willing to create maps for Vancouver and Downtown Vancouver like you did for several Oregon cities recently? Thanks for your consideration. ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:22, 17 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I suspect there may have been a couple already in place (browse w:c:Category:Maps of Vancouver, e.g. w:c:File:Location map Canada Vancouver Downtown.png). Anyway, with any luck, @Another Believer:, these two will do ... let me know if problems. Hi there. I've started a new initiative, the Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. It's a long term goal to bring about 10,000 article improvements to the UK and Ireland. Through two contests involving just six or seven weeks of editing so far we've produced over 1500 improvements. Long term if we have more people chipping it and adding articles they've edited independently as well from all areas of the UK then reaching that target is all possible. I think it would be an amazing achievement to see 10,000 article improvements by editors chipping in. If you support this and think you might want to contribute towards this long term please sign up in the Contributors section. No obligations, just post work on anything you feel like whenever you want, though try to avoid basic stubs if possible as we're trying to reduce the overall stub count and improve general comprehension and quality. So if working on SSSI articles one day, place article improvements on the list! Thanks.♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:42, 30 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Lutyens[edit]

FYI, I have a complete list of his memorials in the UK along with some other details at User:HJ Mitchell/L, in case you fancy adding them to the list (I would but I hate tables!). There are also a dozen or so abroad—Bermuda, Hong Kong, Sierra Leone, Zambia, Thiepval, Canada, Ireland, and a few others (I'll find the page in Lutyens and the Great War at some point but I don't have time now). I'm thinking of writong an overview article about the war memorials but I'm still considering how to structure it. Best, HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 12:00, 13 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I'd found User:HJ Mitchell/War memorials, but /L much more useful. I'll slowly add these to the List of Works page, and do what I can to link to them ... Africa[edit]

Big thanks for those lists, I've inserted them into the Destubathon. Planning on giving $200 top prize to whoever destubs the most core stubs during the contest. See the proposal for it on the 10,000 Challenge page, hoping to apply next week. A lot going into it so sign up if interested in expanding a few national parks or wildlife articles!♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:07, 24 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, is there any way you could generate another list of the ones in Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon/Core stubs but all entries from medium to top importance sifted through and arranged by country together where possible?♦ Dr. Blofeld 08:24, 6 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Dr. Blofeld: - Something like this, for Nigeria? I kinda doubt that many of the countries will have appropriate tags, but I'll do what I can. Let me know if the direction of travel is appropriate. Meanwhile, is British India within the scope of the 10,000? Massacre of Benares. --Tagishsimon (talk) 23:25, 6 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Or ... to cover all bases - seems to me I'm finding heaps of stubs when I ask petscan to list by country, rather than as I did before, to list by continent. So now I'm thinking many articles have templates for country wikiprojects and lack templates for the Africa wikiproject. Algeria and Angola done now. --Tagishsimon (talk) 23:42, 6 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
And ... mostly done. I've missed two or three; I'll come back to them. Here's a thing: during the daytime, I'm on a metered internet - satellite connection - and large page sizes make me sad. Africa is now large. 10,000 is fairly large. zzzzzz. --Tagishsimon (talk) 03:55, 7 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Perfect yup, thanks, exactly what I was envisaging. I think I'll have to create a separate page for the contestant entries though because it might get too big and some contestants will be in Africa!♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:43, 7 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Had to move them to the core stub page. Any idea what happened to Sao Tome and Principe and Somalia?♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:39, 7 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Done! --Tagishsimon (talk) 13:16, 7 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! I think I missed Cape Verde as well. We'll need to double check how many countries there actually are!♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:28, 7 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Added. Double-check done, based on List of sovereign states and dependent territories in Africa. We have all the recognised states. Of the two States with limited recognition, Somaliland for stub purposes gets categories as Somalia, so we're covered. However the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic gets categorised under Wikipedia:WikiProject Western Sahara, and there are three each of H/M/L articles, as below. I think we can pass on the Non-sovereign territories. --Tagishsimon (talk) 16:49, 7 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, so 53, 54 or 55? I would guess 54 with South Sudan now, I know it used to be 53.♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:53, 7 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
55 including Western Sahara, though some reckon that's part of Morocco. Most maps show it independent though, so let's go with 55.

On the question of the core list page length, I'm inclined to split it into 55 discrete pages, such that each country can link to a single page having as content only that country's stubs; but retain the large page using 55 transclusions for those who want to see the whole thing. Does that work for you, Dr. Blofeld. --Tagishsimon (talk) 15:41, 10 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I was going to suggest that. Can you do that?.♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:48, 10 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Yup, will do in the next couple of hours & yes, amend the page links from the main page appropriately. --Tagishsimon (talk) 16:11, 10 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Watch out for Anthere and Mega library Girl's edits today though so they don't get lost.♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:37, 10 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I'll do a stock-take later tonight and check that nothing gets lost. The main Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon‎ page is missing a couple of countries ... Seychelles and I forget which other. I'll sort that out too; I've not done discrete stub pages for these two yet. --Tagishsimon (talk) 18:57, 10 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

David Thomas Richardson[edit]

I've got a copy of his will from the National Archives, will happily email a copy to you if you would be interested. It's rather hard to read, but I think I can make out a reference to two natural (that is to say illegitimate) children, presumable DLR and one other. DuncanHill (talk) 14:49, 4 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks DuncanHill, I'd appreciate that. I've emailed you lest you don't have my email addy. I'm thinking that the Victoria Web article is an RS ... concur? I can stretch to another Richardson article. Here, fwiw, is my other big unsolved issue. Catherine Eliza Richardson#cite note-5 seems to have been related to George Harris, 1st Baron Harris; by description it was he that she went to stay with in India before precipitately marrying G. G. Richardson. iirc she's from a Scottish borders family, he from Kent. (And I'm also interested in DLR's uncle, Colonel Sherwood - who he?) Not expecting a solution to any of these, just mentioning they're open questions; I've not dug hard into either yet. --18:36, 4 October 2016 (UTC)
I think we could treat the Victorian Web as reliable, much of it is peer reviewed. Harris was from Kent, but his mother was from Cumberland so there could be a connexion with Borders families on that side. Harris of course is a Scottish name, but as his father was a clergyman in England it's likely any Scottish connexion on that side would be rather further back. Lots of Richardsons in the Borders, all of them apparently cousins of some sort or another! Will have a dig around now and then, if I turn anything up I'll drop you a line. BTW - do you have access to the ODNB? Free if you have a library card from a council in the UK. General Harris and Mrs Richardson are both in it. DuncanHill (talk) 19:11, 4 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks; useful thoughts. I have ODNB access. Like all of us, I lack only sufficient time :) --Tagishsimon (talk) 19:17, 4 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Looking on RootsWeb, G.G. Richardson was related to Catherine Eliza through his mother, Susanna Scott, sister of James Scott (Catherine's father). There's a Charles Scott who was "ADC to his uncle, General Harris at the Siege of Seringapatam" who was Catherine's brother. So - that's the side we need to look at to find out just how Harris was her uncle. DuncanHill (talk) 19:21, 4 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
George Harris was her uncle by marriage, he married Anne Carteret Dickson, sister of Phoebe Dickson (Catherine Eliza's mother). DuncanHill (talk) 19:25, 4 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
That's really first class sleuthing, DuncanHill. I'm completely unfamiliar with http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com ... I wonder, idly, does it support the concept of specifying two people records - Harris & Catherine, for instance - and finding the shortest route from one to the other? Anyway: I'm properly pleased that we know the relationships here, as well as such things as Phoebe's progeny: she popped 'em out like peas, it seems. I'll tweak articles appropriately over time. Thanks very much for spending the time; it's good to be able to add rich context like this to articles. --Tagishsimon (talk) 21:24, 4 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
It's a pleasure. I just found this which says of Catherine Eliza "She was married to her cousin, Gilbert Geddes Richardson, on the 29th of April 1799, at Fort George, Madras; where she was then living with her uncle, General, afterwards Lord Harris; and the connexion proved, in all respects, a suitable and happy one. Her husband, at that time captain of an Indiaman, was one of a number of brothers, natives of the south of Scotland, who all sought their fortunes in India, and one of whom, Lieutenant-Colonel Richardson, became known in literature as an able translator of Sanscrit poetry, and contributor to the Asiatic Researches. He was lost at sea, with his wife and six children, on their homeward voyage; and this distressing event, accompanied as it was by protracted suspense and anxiety, was long and deeply deplored by his gifted sister-in-law." - which gives us the link to D T Richardson! DuncanHill (talk) 21:36, 4 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, now you're just catching me up, I'd already got there - David Lester Richardson#See also! The passage you quoted is from Catherine Eliza Richardson#cite note-Rogers-2 written by Mrs. MacArthur, a relation (precise relationship unknown, but I'll see if I can find it) of Catherine Eliza, and the person responsible for initiation of the "Caroline" Eliza naming error Catherine Eliza Richardson#cite note-1. I didn't particularly clock Lieutenant-Colonel Richardson in MacArthur's biography when I read it; I hadn't come across DLR by that point. I hope the rest of the Scotts and Richardsons are less notable, or we'll be here forever. --Tagishsimon (talk) 21:48, 4 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
There were some amazing families in British India, they seem to have bred them well! I found a little about Colonel Sherwood. Colonel Sherwood was of the Bengal Artillery, sometime Commissary of Stores at Fort William. See Select Committee on the East India Company. Also, according to "Memoir of the services of the Bengal artillery, from the formation of the corps, ed. by J.W. Kaye" "Colonel Sherwood was appointed acting commandant during Major-General Hardwicke's absence on sick leave." DuncanHill (talk) 21:53, 4 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I was wondering how big was the community of British officers and civil servants (gentlemen, you understand, not Tommy Atkins) in India and in specific locations - Madras, Calcutta, &c. How big were the pools in which our Richardsons swam? --Tagishsimon (talk) 21:58, 4 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
It's remarkable just how few Europeans were needed to govern the teeming millions of Hind. I have a few books which may be worth me digging through to see if they are mentioned - will do just as soon as I've finished John Keay's excellent "Where Men and Mountains Meet". Anyway, Colonel Sherwood was James Doddington Sherwood, I think he ended up a Major General. He married a Mary Richardson of Langholme, so that looks like the connexion there. see plaque inscription here and a picture of him here. DuncanHill (talk) 22:15, 4 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I have Robert Groves Sandeman on my todo list, together with the Zhob Valley Expedition. Forward policy, single-handed. Progress not so great; I think partly I lack a well-labelled map of Baluchistan & surrounding areas. And time & discipline, obvs. I presume you've seen all of Peter Hopkirk books? I think they're what motivated a real interest in this area in me. --Tagishsimon (talk)
Yes, love Hopkirk's books. I read Kim of course as a young boy (and many times since), and Fitzroy Maclean's A Person from England as a teenager. Have you come across Colonel Alexander Gardiner yet? DuncanHill (talk) 23:07, 4 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
No. He's new to me. Leaves one wondering how he communicated. And Maclean. Such lives. --Tagishsimon (talk) 23:25, 4 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

A barnstar for you![edit]

The Special Barnstar
Really appreciate the big effort you've gone to help me set this up. You've been a massive help to me on this! Thankyou! I know you consider destubbing (rather than creating new stubs) very important. You're welcome to contribute to the contest even if not interested in prizes! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:34, 11 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

X2 Really appreciate your help. I'll leave you in peace now to write those women ODNB entries!

Thank you Dr. B. It's a pleasure to assist. --Tagishsimon (talk) 10:07, 11 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

There's a problem with your intstruction in the new stub pages. You say "Add new stubs you find to these lists" , which I don't want, as that means anybody can add any stub they want and claim it was on the core list!! Also as there's a prize for most geography/wildlife stubs, perhaps you could find a way to add those to the core lists for each country?♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:38, 12 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

That's a pest, but fixed, Dr. Blofeld. I'll have a look at the geo/wildlife thing. I'm uncertain how the scoring for Africa works in the case that you open up a listed stub, and find it is far from a stub (but merely that the talk page class classification is well out of date). It's not clear to me that one needs to do any work on it to claim it as destubbed. Do the rules need a tweak in this respect? --Tagishsimon (talk) 16:50, 12 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, ideally any article over 1.5 kb readable prose shouldn't be classified as a stub. Yet there are some entries much longer than that still with stub tags. If the article has a stub tag and much longer than 1.5kb that's OK as long as a little work goes into sourcing/improving it and then removing the stub tag and updating in the talk page I think. It might be a good thing if we allow that. I'll update the ruling on that. There is no points system on this. It's pure article count. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:55, 12 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I've added a page reference for Stamp, who did indeed say it, although in a slightly more caveated way. I've thought for a long while Lutyens is not currently well served by Wikipedia, he certainly merits an FA. One day. KJP1 (talk) 16:57, 11 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks KJP1. Relieved to have that sorted. Agreed; Lutyens and his works are very ill-served by Wikipedia. I hope he'll get his turn; I've merely been tinkering around the edges. --Tagishsimon (talk) 19:57, 11 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

African wildlife[edit]

"Found in xx" wiki search will turn up some hits on the other 20 odd. Benin try this for example. There's also Flora categories I believe Category:Flora of Africa by region! The problem is that there's an overlap for many countries.♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:49, 14 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Technically...[edit]

(Posting on your talk page because doing so on the ANI thread itself would not accomplish anything.)

The litigant "seeking" to add links to his blog to the article would not, strictly speaking, be a problem with COI, as COI editors who aren't already subject to a TBAN are allowed post to the talk page and request others to make edits in their stead. Since the diff you showed was them editing the article themself, you are not wrong that this was a violation, but I wouldn't have used the word "seeking", since it implies using the proper avenues for COI editors.

I understood what you meant (because I clicked the diff), and I'm sure most others will as well, but just a heads-up in case you want to edit your own post.

Cheers!

DYK nomination of Marlowe Memorial[edit]

Hello! Your submission of Marlowe Memorial at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and some issues with it may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) underneath your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! BlueMoonset (talk) 23:15, 17 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Tagishsimon, you still have not supplied the required quid pro quo (QPQ) review for this nomination. You need to respond there very soon if you wish to continue pursuing this nomination. I hope you do. Thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 05:22, 22 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, BlueMoonset. You've been very kind in reminding me twice. I'll either do it by the end of this weekend, or the DYK can be junked. I'm afraid the DYK process and I do not seem to get on. --Tagishsimon (talk) 02:16, 23 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for responding. Since then, an issue has been raised with the hook; do you think you can provide a new one? Many thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 04:02, 2 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
No, I'm done with DYK, BlueMoonset, thanks. I've read Gormenghast; I know how it ends. --Tagishsimon (talk) 16:44, 2 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

For the love of god, don't feed him![edit]

The user whom you appear to have inadvertently engaged in a conversation on ANI is a troll. He showed up in that thread because I was there (and perhaps because I indirectly referred to him) and is apparently trying to annoy you because he perceives you (and anyone else who thinks Keith is being unruly) as being on "my side". His response to you is ... not something anyone should try to decipher. Just don't feed him. If you want to do anything you should keep watching ANI because sometime soon a long-term solution may be coming. Hijiri 88 (やや) 13:24, 19 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Very good, Hijiri88. I'll get popcorn. --Tagishsimon (talk) 15:22, 19 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Entries[edit]

Hi, at 172kb Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon/Entries is getting very long. Can you split them by the main regions of Africa West, North, East, Central and South and another searate page for Special claims? The 10,000 Challenge page should have the countries for each area to make it easer to split. That's better than 55 tranclusions as I have to watch them all on my watchlist!♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:57, 22 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I'll add this to my work-list; may get around to it tonight. Sadly, installing a sink & new worksurface right now; nightmare DIY. --Tagishsimon (talk) 17:34, 22 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Done, Dr. Blofeld. You'd better check that I've not cocked anything up. I went with A-D, E-K etc, since to split by NSEW requires the user to know where the country is within the continent, whilst A-D requires them only to know the name of the country. I also refactored the rules slightly, with a view to condensing them a little, and to setting out more clearly the entry process. I took great care not to change the semantics and emphasis. --Tagishsimon (talk) 01:57, 23 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Yeah, that's probably easier for editors to find the countries. Cheers!♦ Dr. Blofeld 07:09, 23 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Stubs[edit]

Can you do me a favour and estimate how much stubs we have for the UK and Ireland put together and the US and Canada separately?♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:15, 2 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I can give you some figures, but I'm pessimistic that they reflect what you're asking.
  • WP:USA lists 120k stubs (but notes there are circa 100 stub categories covering US subjects, implying these are not included in the 120k)
  • WP:CA lists 53k (is canada, not california!)
  • WP:IE/A lists 16k
  • WP:UK lists 4k, but...

If we rashly take USA vs CA vs (ENG, WAL, SCO, NI, IE) as indicative of the proportions, then we get US=120 vs CA=53 vs UK&IE=44. Does that help, @Dr. Blofeld:? In my bones, I feel it's unlikely that there are more Canada stubs than there are UK stubs, so I'm not feeling good about any of the figures. Meanwhile, I'll pester the stub-sorting people and see if they have a clue. --Tagishsimon (talk) 05:14, 3 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for that, so we reckon around 180,000 stubs for US and Canada combined and around 44,000 for the UK and Ireland? Even more than Africa combined..♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:39, 3 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Something like that sort of ratio, yes. Intuitively (sadly) I'd expect Africa to have far fewer everythings. --Tagishsimon (talk) 11:22, 3 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

On 8 November 2016, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Christiana Willes, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. Excellent article, Chrisvls; thanks for creating it. Not sure there's much advice I can give, beyond learn from diffs and, probably, link obscure terms like Cineradiology, even if there's no article on it yet. I think the Elizabeth article is just fine as it is, and so I'd encourage you to find the next woman in red - be aware of WP:WPWIR, if you've not come across that (much in the way that I had not come across Wikipedia:WikiProject Women scientists ... big place, Wikipedia). Yes, I know, the Jew-baiter. A lot of his comments are just stupid fringe comments. But I take offense at the notion Jews are "not white". They're every bit as Caucasian as David Duke. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 03:56, 3 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I know. Like you, Baseball Bugs, I'm always tempted to argue with the trolls in the vain hope that I'll convince them that they're misguided. WP:DENY is probably the better way, though. --Tagishsimon (talk) 03:59, 3 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I concur in general. I was just curious to see how he would try to get around the Caucasian argument before he would be blocked and rev-del'd. Whatever. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 04:03, 3 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

You totally ROCK![edit]

Cheers!

I was searching for vodka to offer you За здоровье! Apparently, Wiki users are more into beer. Then I thought perhaps tea, but found no crumpets to go with. *sigh* Champagne will have to do. Thank you for all of your help with Lyubov Golanchikova and my technology issues in general. Glad you know you are out there coming to my aid on such a regular basis. I appreciate you more than I can say for solving my technological ineptitude. SusunW (talk) 15:13, 7 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, thank you, SusunW, that's most kind of you, a very welcome message to find on my return home. Not only champagne, but in the company of a group of women who look as if they're having a rather fine time: I had no clue that the social life of WiR was quite so enthusiastic ;).

I really am pleased to help out when I can and hope you'll consider me a useful factotum should need arise in the future. But I'm clear in my mind that it's you who is doing the heavy lifting on wikipedia. Lyubov really is a very fine article, of a quality I aspire to but have yet to come near. I've asked the Wikiproject Aviation people to assess it against their B-class criteria; I hope they'll get around to doing that in due time. --Tagishsimon (talk) 18:14, 7 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

They did it! I had no idea one could even ask for such a thing. I research, I write. The rest of it is all like magic to me (okay, in truth more like witchery). SusunW (talk) 18:20, 7 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Oh cool bananas! That's so ace, SusunW. You see, it's because I find any excuse not to write that I know about these things ;) --Tagishsimon (talk) 18:28, 7 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Which is why we each do what we are good at and work in networks to find others who are good at what we aren't. I actually try to do the technical stuff, but when it becomes frustrating, I stick my hand up and plead for a bailout. ;) SusunW (talk) 18:34, 7 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yup. I just stole your Charlie Brown waawaawaawwaa analogy, SusunW, in a conversation I'm having with another user who is having problems with referencing. And I recall it was you who advised me to install the wikidata gadget back in October. I was a bit dismissive at the time, but between you and me, I followed your advice and you'll never guess how right you were. But don't let on. A man has his pride. --Tagishsimon (talk) 18:46, 7 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Declined speedy deletion nomination of Grace (musical group)[edit]

Hello Tagishsimon. I have declined your speedy deletion nomination of Grace (musical group) as an article that does not credibly indicate the importance or significance of the topic under CSD A7. That criterion did not apply because having a notable creator is a credible indication of "importance or significance". Also, it contained citations to apparent secondary sources that are commonly recognized as reliable. This is implicitly considered to meet the "importance or significance" indication standard, because the existence of such sources (discussing the subject in detail) is a chief basis we use to assess whether a topic meets the higher standard of notability, on the merits at a discussion process such as AfD. Adam9007 (talk) 22:30, 13 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Festive greetings![edit]

Thank you[edit]

I am a little confused. Didn't you restore an article for me, but at the same time commented on a discussion on my talk page. I thought our discussion helped to clarify some issues and was thoroughly productive. Leaving a comment in an edit summary about my behavior, while restoring content of an article I created, and then not recognizing that the blanking of the content is the problem, not a discussion on my talk page, is puzzling. Best Regards.

Barbara (WVS) (talk)
I was not commenting on your behaviour, Barbara (WVS), but the behaviour of the person who blanked the article. --Tagishsimon (talk) 00:55, 22 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for watching out for me. I just read this editor's user and talk page. I don't understand the behavior. This editor is also an administrator?? I'm concerned, Can all my articles really disappear that easily? What is the best way to proceed? Best Regards,
Barbara (WVS) (talk) 00:59, 22 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, my concern level is rising because now the same editor has shown up on my talk page using a different username and commenting as he were a new participant in the discussion. I will not engage with him any more, this is creepy.
Barbara (WVS) (talk)
I'm a little uncertain myself, Barbara (WVS). I find it very poor practise to blank a page in the way that the user did, but I guess WP:BRD might cover it; he was bold, I reverted, perhaps discussion will ensue. I've seen three or four questionable actions/arguments from the same user in fairly quick succession in the last couple of days, which lead me to wonder if he is suffering some sort of an attack of hubris. I don't think articles should disappear as yours did, but I suggest keeping calm, reverting, discussing is the way to go.
As to the article: it might be wise to make a fairly clear statement of the grounds of notability in the article, to avoid a repetition. I currently have formed the view that the subject is notable for the creation of the Stephen Foster Memorial, which in contemporary times appears to be a very significant part of the UofP. So perhaps the first sentence might be changed to "Marion Foster was the only child of Stephen Collins Foster and is notable for the creation of the Stephen Foster Memorial, which she maintained and curated for many years prior to its incorporation into the UofP"? Presuming you agree that that is an accurate summation, it would appear to deal with the grounds on which the user blanked the page.
And I see, by way of irony, that I appear to have done exactly what the user we're discussing did, in respect of something to do with hostess biscuits - see the thread below. Clearly, then, I must believe that there are circumstances where such an action is warranted, though as I write this, I forget the details of my redirect. Ah well. --Tagishsimon (talk) 01:27, 22 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hostess[edit]

Hi there! I've restored Hostess (snack cakes) after you had redirected it to Hostess CupCake, because I think there is still a need for the article. If you have a different preference, I invite you to discuss it at Talk:Hostess (snack cakes). Thanks, and happy editing! Ibadibam (talk) 01:13, 22 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, thanks Ibadibam. I think I took the view at the time that the two articles covered exactly the same subject-matter. I think perhaps you are correct; one appears to discuss the company, and the other appears to discuss one of the products of the company. So. My bad. Thanks for dealing with it so gracefully. --Tagishsimon (talk) 01:32, 22 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Sudha Roy[edit]

Hi there! Hope you had a good Christmas. While checking the Wikidata entry for Sudha Roy who appears on today's DYK, I discovered that you had entered her as male using Petscan on 24 November although her gender was clear from the first sentence of the article. At the time, there was no indication in the categories that she was female although female categories (Indian women trade unionists, 20th-century Indian women politicians) were added on 13 December. I think it would be useful to check how this came about as there have been other reports recently of male being assigned to women on Wikidata. It may also be useful to see whether such errors could be detected and/or corrected semi-automatically by taking account of female categories when they are added to the Wikipedia article.--Ipigott (talk) 11:41, 28 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

mmm. There's a step in my work where I have to spot female names in a long list of mainly male names. Clearly I missed Sudha. As to use female cats to recognise wrongly male wikidata ... it's possible to do, but female cats have many male articles (or, rather, male article nestle within what one would a priori expect to be a famale cat space) so the false positives rate completely precludes automation, and probably general utility. I'll give something a spin this evening to check. There is wikidata work on spotting misapplication of male or female - notably the 'given name' work centering around Wikidata:WikiProject_Names. Concerns very male versus female is not being left unaddressed. --Tagishsimon (talk) 12:56, 28 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Here's a petscan looking at articles in the Women by ... category tree, which use the Male gender property in wikidata. About 1200 items, the vast majority being men. Was 1440 - I've corrected a couple of hundred records. Even supposing all of these were women filed as men, it would account for 0.1% of biogs, so not large beer. --Tagishsimon (talk) 03:54, 29 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Aniceto porsisoca requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Can you fix these so that I can add my article when I am done? [2] is the same person as [3] but I have no clue how to "merge" them. SusunW (talk) 19:10, 27 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I have a little merge widget under the 'more' tab in wikidata, SusunW, which I've employed so there's only one wikidata record now: [4]. The record disagrees with itself as to her country of citizenship and her date of death ... you can delete erroneous properties if you know which are the correct ones. --Tagishsimon (talk) 23:22, 27 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Muchas gracias! She was born Austrian and became a naturalized Mexican citizen in 1954. So...I think both are correct? Haven't gotten to figuring out the death date yet, but I'll sort it out. this says 20 September 2004, this says she died on 19 September 2004, this says she died in October 2004, this says they held a tribute on 14 October 2004 to her after her death SusunW (talk) 23:44, 27 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Two citizenships are fine. In an ideal world we'd know the from-to dates for both & be able to enter them. And I see healthy disagreements about DoB and DoD regularly on wikidata. So. All good :) --Tagishsimon (talk) 23:52, 27 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I am absolutely positive that 19 September 2004 is correct. Notimex as well as UNAM report that date as does the museum which received her bequest of artifacts. [5]. Thanks for your help. I finished her and linked her :) SusunW (talk) 18:58, 28 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Dear uploader:

The media file you uploaded as File:Aston Hall - Birmingham - 1851 - Project Gutenberg eText 13721.jpg appears to be missing information as to one (or more) of the following :

  1. The author or creators of the work, (including information as to the author's lifespan).
  2. Where and how this particular version was obtained.
  3. When the work was created,

If you did provide such information, it is currently confusing for others trying to make use of the image.

It would be appreciated if you would consider updating the file description page, to make the authorship of the media clearer.

Although some images may not need author information in obvious cases, (such where an applicable source is provided), authorship information aids users of the image, and helps ensure that appropriate credit is given (a requirement of some licenses).

  • If you created this media yourself, please consider explicitly including your user name, for which: {{subst:usernameexpand|Tagishsimon/C10}} will produce an appropriate expansion,

The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Michael Cole[edit]

Is unambiguously notable, notwithstanding the AfD. You say "None of the references are from after the last deletion discussion", but that has no bearing whatsoever on anything. I suggest that you go to a second AfD should you wish for deletion, since the case for general notability is unimpeachable, and the subject's appeal is of little or no standing given the well-referenced state of the current article. --Tagishsimon (talk) 01:52, 14 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

He might be, but none of the references in the article indicate that, except when he quit Harrods, so that would be WP:BLP1E. Given he previously requested that the article be removed, then the sources in the article need to establish notability, and they don't. I don't see that WP:JOURNALIST is met. Is there something I'm missing? Wouldn't take much more to establish notability, but it hardly looks unimpeachable based on what is in the article, and that he's retired, so there's little new since the last pretty clear AFD, which provided no additional sources to establish notability.
