Administrators' newsletter – July 2021

News and updates for administrators from the past month (June 2021).

Guideline and policy news

  • Consensus has been reached to delete all books in the book namespace. There was rough consensus that the deleted books should still be available on request at WP:REFUND even after the namespace is removed.
  • An RfC is open to discuss the next steps following a trial which automatically applied pending changes to TFAs.

Technical news

  • IP addresses of unregistered users are to be hidden from everyone. There is a rough draft of how IP addresses may be shown to users who need to see them. This currently details allowing administrators, checkusers, stewards and those with a new usergroup to view the full IP address of unregistered users. Editors with at least 500 edits and an account over a year old will be able to see all but the end of the IP address in the proposal. The ability to see the IP addresses hidden behind the mask would be dependent on agreeing to not share the parts of the IP address they can see with those who do not have access to the same information. Accessing part of or the full IP address of a masked editor would also be logged. Comments on the draft are being welcomed at the talk page.

Sino-Vietnamese

Hi SunDawn, I saw you reverted my change. As a native Vietnamese speaker, I believe the number cited in the article is very low "However, in a loanword typology project utilizing a list of about 1,500 words, only 27% of Vietnamese vocabulary was shown to be from Chinese" so I added the source, coming from the same author "However, this number must be considered low since that study did not include grammatical vocabulary, names, common vocabulary in the region, among other categories of words to which the Chinese lexicon is the source in Vietnamese" https://core.ac.uk/download/pdf/156620823.pdf which is a reliable source.

The second one, about 39.2% of Vietnamese words are of Chinese origin is taken from here https://luocsutocviet.com/2020/07/20/500-tu-goc-han-chiem-ti-le-bao-nhieu-trong-tieng-viet/. Which can be roughly translated as follows:

According to the doctoral thesis of Ky Quang Mau, defended at the the Faculty of Linguistics, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi on May 28, 2007, in the Vietnamese Dictionary by Hoang Phe (republished in 2006), out of 32,924 entries of the Dictionary, 12,910 entries are from Sino-Vietnamese, the rate is about 39.2%.

Can I cite and use it (the doctoral thesis) as the reliable source? Thanks!

@Vinamit123: Hello! I hope this day finds you well! I do think that this source is more reliable than source that you gave. Concerning thesisas WP:RS, its reliability depends on how much the journal is cited and its influence. If you want to cite the journal, you should cite directly to the journal, not the website that is citing the journal. Thank you! SunDawn (talk) 04:04, 9 July 2021 (UTC)
Thanks @SunDawn:, Given there are few research on this subject, it is impossible to have a (near) exact number. I just tried to balance by adding a few more sources each has a different number.

Anne Ramsay

Good afternoon

Thanks for your comment about the article of Anne Ramsay

Instead of a citation its possible put any news or website information,

@GEORGEB1989: Hello! If the source is from website/news site that are reliable per WP:RS you can place it on the article. However, I do think that Its best know for fucked Mia Kirshner in a chapter of The series The L Word. in your diff here is clearly a vandalism, not just unsourced addition to the article, as I don't think any kind of reliable sources will cover such things. Thank you! SunDawntalk 15:44, 9 July 2021 (UTC)

Jaap Verhage's edit of "Purusha"

Hello SunDawn,

I am not aware of removing any content except changing "times" to "time" so as to correct the English in the article. The rest of the edit mainly concerns the addition of a number of "the"s, with the same object in mind.

You're right about leaving an edit summary, though. I usually do that, but this time I forgot.

I hope this is the correct way to respoind to your message, as I can't find any other way.

Regards, Jaap.

Jaap.Verhage (talk) 13:26, 6 July 2021 (UTC)

@Jaap.Verhage: the problem that I see in this diff is that it is not only changing "times" to "time", but also deleting tons of content. And yes, this is the best way to contact me. If you need any assistance, you can ask me here. Thank you! SunDawn (talk) 13:32, 6 July 2021 (UTC)
@SunDawn: that certainly wasn't my intent. In that case, sorry and thanks for undoing my edit. I'll try to be more careful next time. Regards, Jaap.
@Jaap.Verhage: No worries! As you seem to be acting in good faith I will also remove my warning in your talk page. Have a great day and happy editing! SunDawntalk 15:46, 9 July 2021 (UTC)

Declined AFD tags from Hariboneagle927

If you continued doing these you will be block no longer cause I request you in blocking policy or if you stop vandalizing īhø taó känga I will cancel the wikipedia deletion policy....

WP:BLOCK Mulan-fanty2 (talk) 04:22, 10 July 2021 (UTC)

@Mulan-fanty2: Hello! First of all, if you want to cite Wikipedia policy use and close it with , instead of {{ and closed by }}, because by using curly brackets you are transcluding the policy page, not giving links to the policy page. To the matter at hand, the page of īhø taó känga is nominated through the standard deletion procedure of WP:AFD not the speedy deletion procedure of WP:CSD. And when the discussion is still going on, notably on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Īhø taó känga, you can't delete the AFD tags. Thus, my reverts is justified. Philip Lawn

My name is Philip Lawn. You may think that you are doing me a favour, but since the information on the Wikipedia entry in my name includes factual errors, omissions, and information I don't particularly like, you are doing me a disfavour, which I do not appreciate.

I would prefer to not have a Wikipedia page in my name. However, if there is to be one, I would like it EXACTLY as I want it to be, which is as follows:

Philip Lawn is an adjunct professor at Torrens University (Australia) with thirty years of experience as a lecturer and researcher at various Australian universities. Lawn is an ecological economist who has focused most of his attention on the concept of sustainable development (theory, policy, and indicators); ecological macroeconomics; environment-employment issues; the economics of climate change; and alternative welfare indicators.

Publications Lawn has written and edited the following books: • "The Ecological Economics of Climate Change"(Springer, 2016) • "Globalisation, Economic Transition, and the Environment" (Edward Elgar, 2013) • "Environment and Employment: A Reconciliation" (Routledge, 2009) • "Sustainable Welfare in the Asia-Pacific" (Edward Elgar, 2008, co-edited with Matthew Clarke) • "Frontier Issues in Ecological Economics" (Edward Elgar, 2007) • "Sustainable Development Indicators in Ecological Economics" (Edward Elgar, 2006) • "Toward Sustainable Development: An Ecological Economics Approach" (Lewis, 2000)

Career Professor Lawn has taught a range of subjects at a number of Australian universities. In 2004, he founded The International Journal of Environment, Workplace, and Employment (Inderscience) and served as the founding editor of the journal until 2009. He was also a guest editor of the International Journal of Environment and Sustainable Development. From 2003 to 2007, Lawn was a member of the Executive of the Australian and New Zealand Society for Ecological Economics (ANZSEE) and was involved in the organisation of a number of ANZSEE conferences.

Although created in the late-1980s and early-1990s, Professor Lawn has played a key role in the development of the Index of Sustainable Economic Welfare/Genuine Progress Indicator (GPI), which serve as better indicators of economic well-being. Lawn is in the process of developing a suite of sustainable development indicators and calculating them for all the world's countries.

Professor Lawn is also a Research Scholar at the Global Institute for Sustainable Prosperity, and a member of the Wakefield Futures Group of Concerned Scientists (based in South Australia).

@147.10.206.176: Hello! Wikipedia is about reliability of source, not about who posted the source. You claiming to be the person in the article is not adding more reliability on your edits. If you have reliable source, please place it on the article. SunDawntalk 14:35, 17 July 2021 (UTC)

Hossein Farhady

Hi. Let's remain fiedel to the truth. You should not edit the information about a person you do not know. This article should not be in Wikipedia, or it should reflect the truth about Hossein Farhady. This person is not that outstanding to need an encyclopedia entry. You are trying to save his face. Do you also save Harvy Weinstein's face in the same way?

@2.191.35.145:. Hello, great day to you! I guess this is about Hossein Farhady. Per the Wikipedia rules, all kinds of edits can be challenged by any editors, thus everyone can challenge any edits. irrespective if the editors knows the person personally or not. Also, per the rules of Wikipedia, all edits should be well sourced. Your edits are not sourced, thus should be removed. If you have any sources that satisfy WP:RS please add it to your edits. Have a good day! SunDawntalk 02:26, 23 July 2021 (UTC)

Religion of King Harsha

It's clear from multiple sources, that Harsha was a Buddhist king who used to be Hindu in his earlier life. But due to political movement of Hindutva, someone keeps changing it to hinduism.

Even the source cited by user Billjones94, who changed it to hinduism, says that he later converted to Buddhism. I have now cited my own source.

Hello 2402:3a80:677:4fed:ed4a:b78d:860f:7988, good day to you! I reverted because you change the religion without citing any source. As you now have provided the change with source, all is well and good! SunDawntalk 16:04, 27 July 2021 (UTC)
