Footnotes

Hi there. Footnotes are really nice when you get the hang of them, and you're well on your way to knowing how to use them. I see that you found Template:Cite web and used it well. That works fine, although for some of the in-line cites in your article I would have used Template:Cite news as they were news stories of one kind or another. But that not very important.

I went back and had a look at that red lettering for you and the only mistake you made was to forget the "s. You wrote <ref name=Daily Mail> when it should have been <ref name="Daily Mail">. Hi to you Stronach. Snek and I work fast, it is true, even though he is a snail (snek means snail as you might already know). Actually I was glad to get this article done, as I recently put together an article List of non-marine molluscs of Great Britain as well as the same thing for Ireland, and doing the Papillifera papillaris article meant there would be one less red link on the GB list. Well you just proved to me that you know more about them than the average person does! Good for you. I hope the nearby Roman snails do well and avoid ending up in the saucepan! Are you in Bucks? I live near Central Park and despite acidic soil, we even have one or two grove snails there. Sleddale Hall

Not sure if I am in the right place. A new editor, User:Tim Ellis RIBA, has been removing cited material from the article on Sleddale Hall. On his talk page he says he is the Tim Ellis who now owns Sleddale Hall (and I have no proof he is, but then again no reason to doubt him). The material he has been removing is about the Hall being boarded up, as he wishes to discourage people from breaking in. It is a historic fact that the Hall has been boarded up for years and a Guardian article reflected this in its reporting; I am somewhat loathe to remove this reference as it is part of the 'story' of Sleddale Hall. But I am no expert on COI editing or what would be prudent in this situation: does what he want take precedence over objective reporting of facts? How much can we 'bend' to help him, if at all? Can anyone step in and advise please? And what's the position on his COI editing? (I assume I haven't outed him, given his editing name ...) Stronach (talk) 21:38, 15 June 2011 (UTC)

I don't see that having the information in the article is important, and so I don't see that removing it does any harm. Since there are genuine grounds for concern about publicising the information, it seems to me it may as well be removed. This seems to me to be a case where, despite conflict of interest, the user's editing is reasonable. However, I will suggest to him that requesting an edit might sometimes be better. Undo vandalism

I am watching the War Horse (film) page (which I have put a lot of work into), and it is starting to attract vandalism. When I last checked my watchlist, there were three separate vandalism edits. I have undone them one by one but please, how do I undo them all in one go and restore to the previous good edit by me? I sometimes see in an edit summary something like 'restored to previous good version by So-and-so' - how do I do this? (and also, have I undone the three edits correctly?) Thanks in advance. Try using WP:TWINKLE and (after the "installation", see the manual at the page there) you can choose the edit you want and restore the page to an edit you want. Alternatively: If there is too much vandalism, propose WP:semi protection for that page. mabdul 21:49, 30 June 2011 (UTC)

Flicked through a copy of "War Horse, the making of the motion picture" yesterday and it's clear from the photographs that it is "real", in the sense of being a full-sized 3-dimensional physical object, albeit a set for the film, the "tail" ladder runs up to a door in the side of the mill. Yeah, I know what you mean, about needing to be familiar with an article. I've been plugging away at this one since before the event [I checked my IP contribs and I didn't - started the morning after.] (sometimes as a BT dynamic IP - don't always remember to log in) and feel I know it pretty well and have read lord knows how many articles about it; it's just I don't go in for shiny geegaws (a lot of extra work is involved as well). I just keep it on my watchlist and try to check how it's looking every now and then, and add pertinent info as and when it crops up ...Stronach (talk)

That's really great. I have to say though, forget about the shiny star, promoting an article to Featured status can feel very rewarding. If you finally get to a point where you feel your work on the article is "complete", consider asking a few editors (myself included) to assist you with the FA process. Just a thought... I will bear the FA idea in mind but I'm not sure I can be convinced right now - these last two days have been my 'weekend' and so I've had time to work on it (needed as Danny Boyle has been doing a lot of press recently to do with his new film and has been talking for the first time properly about the ceremony, also a video of an October talk he gave on it has just surfaced), but generally I don't have too much time to devote to it and I couldn't commit to a schedule or be able to answer questions/re-edit when demanded by others. Also - I have a fear that the main page is a vandal magnet. But thanks for you kind offer. ... Hello AB - I did a lot of the original writing for the 2012 OC article, came back to it when we were getting it to GA, and have done some more work on it these last few days to pull it into shape and edit out some of the flabbiness it picked up this past year. I haven't done much else on WP so the FA process is mostly unknown to me, but am up for helping if there is someone experienced who can point the way. For GA someone reviewed the article and then I picked up a long list of action points before it got through the hoop - is FA similar? IanB2

Hello again - many thanks -and yes I posted him (as a Jason hopefully I am on firm ground this time) a note. I remember when I first found the article it did look as if it needed work. Giving it a structure linked to the chronology of the ceremony, referencing everything and removing all the overlaps was a lot of work, and of course you and others did a lot more especially on the music where I had little value to add. I'm pleased that such a reasonaby high profile page is still in pretty good shape after a year of open editing, and apart from the official materials (which are quite hard to navigate) think we've come closest to providing a definitive account of a magical event (whilst hopefully avoiding too much bias!)? We haven't suffered too much deliberate vandalism, either?IanB2 p.s. I am fairly sure your note to DB would have reached him p.p.s. with last night the first showing of the Done & Dusted cut, it was great to see a few new shots of what by now seems such a familiar event. It is easy to forget the influence of the particular shots and angles chosen.

Hi Ian. I didn't watch all of last night's showing, but what I did see looked to me to be a very slightly condensed version of the version on the DVD ie Danny Boyle's cut. On the commentary on the DVD that he did with Frank Cottrell Boyce, Boyle talks about some of the changes he made, such as inserting the sepia 'photos' of the soldiers, and a shot of the workers slaving underground in the ?beam engine in the Pandemonium section. Some of the edits were clearly to correct mistakes in the original - such as the camera flashes not going off when Kenneth Branagh stepped into the photography carousel. Annoyingly I didn't record the event when it went out live (I thought it was going to be rubbish so didn't bother ...), so now I only know the DVD version! I should change my user page as I have added more than just the music to the page - the 'Preparations', Technical aspects' 'Awards and accolades' and 'Legacy' sections are largely mine ...! You're right about there not being too much vandalism - I just worry that were it to get featured on the front page it could be buggered up. Hey ho. Good luck if you decide to take it for an FA. interesting - I bought my mother the DVD but haven't seen it myself, yet - must borrow it. I understood the ceremony had been filmed by three separate outfits - the BBC, who did the live broadcast in the UK and whose version was on iPlayer for most of last year, the OBS, whose version is now on Youtube and clearly different in places from the BBC version, and Done & Dusted filmed for Danny Boyle, which I thought was shown last night, as Done & Dusted were in the credits. But maybe BBC3 showed a Director's cut of the original BBC material, which would explain why it is similar/the same as the BBC DVD? Or more likely it's Danny's D&D version that is on the DVD, but was new to me last night. All I know for sure is I've now seen three versions! IanB2

My understanding is that in the end OBS was responsible for filming all the protocol parts - the flag business, speeches, oaths and the athlete's parade. Boyle wanted the ceremony to be shot 'filmically', and didn't think the OBS was up to it, so brought in Done and Dusted, who were filming all the non-OBS bits along with the BBC. I'm more than likely to have got this wrong though .... I know after the event Boyle was cross as a lot of the shots he wanted weren't made. He's quite forthright about it on the commentary. IanB2, yes, the FA process is very similar to the GA process, where reviewers examine the article and nominators address any concerns they may have. I am not as familiar with the content of this article as you and Stronach, so I would not be comfortable taking on an FA nomination myself. However, if you two wish to tackle the concerns raised, I'd be happy to submit a nomination on our behalf. That being said, it seems like changes are still being made to the article. Lytes Cary + Water Tower/Dovecote

Hi I've returned to do some editing on Lytes Cary on which you did good stuff years ago. Using Garnett page 15 as a source you describe a water tower built to imitate a dovecote, however English Heritage thinks it is a dovecote (see NHLE listing & Somerset Historic Environment Record - which includes a note about a claim that it is a 20th C water tower). If you still have a copy of Garnett can you look & see exactly what it says?— Rod ^talk 15:41, 4 May 2013 (UTC)

Hi Rod. Garnett 15 says 'The Apostle Garden. Aligned on the front door and the water tower (built in imitation of the Avebury Manor dovecote) this formal approach takes its name form the twelve yew bushes planted by the Jenners that flank the agreeably undulating stone path.' The caption to the photo looking down the path towards the dovecote/water tower on the same page says 'The Apostle Garden takes its name from the yew bushes that line the front path. The vista is aligned on the water-tank, which the Jenners modelled on a traditional circular dovecote.' Leopold and Nora Jenner lived at Avebury Manor from 1902 - Leopold was the brother of Sir Walter Jenner who bought Lytes Cary in 1907. Hope this helps. Stronach (talk) 10:33, 5 May 2013 (UTC)

Thanks. What else do you think is needed on Lytes Cary to get it to GA standard? We have big issues with loads of copyvios on Tyntesfield, but I'm also working on Clevedon Court, Hestercombe House, Leigh Court, Cleeve Abbey and/or Nettlecombe Court, many of which are included at List of National Trust properties in Somerset. Lytes Cary + Water Tower/Dovecote now resolved

Following our discussion back in May about the 20th century water tower described on the National Heritage List for England as an 18th century dovecote.... I have been through various processes to ask English Heritage to re-examine this. As of 12 December their record now describes it as a water tower built c.1934. Thanks for spotting this. • Hi Tim. I'd rather you didn't. The page is my own personal research page and is for accounts of the Green and Pleasant Land and Pandemonium sections of the opening ceremony. It's not a register of the names of those who took part (if it was I'd just have copied out all the names in the back of the Official Programme - and besides, Wikipedia doesn't encourage nominal rolls and lists of people involved in events, unless each person is notable in their own right rather than having taking part in a notable event.) Of course if you have found any more accounts I'd love to know of them, but would appreciate it if you let me know here.
