Hi, please see if you can help to do anything to improve the article. It's getting out of hand after an IP editor added lots of un-encyclopedic material and removed the maintenance tags at the top. Here - it was added by one of my students as part of the assignment (they are supposed to add a constructive edit to a page of their choice). I have a favor to ask - could you explain to the student why the information was removed, so they can learn from their mistakes? Chinese films[edit]

Hi. You've done a terrific job with Chinese film, especially contemporary. I was wondering though if you thought it would be worth splitting all of the Chinese films by year or at least as far back as say 1940 or 50 or something. The 2000s list especially is huge. Hong Kong of course has it split by year. The problem of course is the older films at present don't have many films listed here. Perhaps you'd be interested in working back and creating lists like List of French films of 2000, List of American films of 1944 etc and creating like List of Chinese films of 1968 etc. There must be a website or something which lists the films by year like Hong Kong, imdb of course you can find the Chinese ones like the French link in my example. I think it would be worth it. If you ever want a hand with stubbing let me know. As per this edit - In fact the Chinese characters are necessary. In anime and manga articles on Wikipedia, the Japanese characters are provided for the character names. It tells readers how the names are written in Chinese.

Box office number[edit]

Hi, great job on updating box office numbers to numerous films! However, there is an inconsistency that I found on some of the films. On some of the titles, such as From Vegas to Macau and That Demon Within, I noticed that the box office from China is in United States dollars while box office from Hong Kong is in Hong Kong dollars. That does not make sense. It should either, both be in local currency (as in "Yuan and Hong Kong dollars") or both be in US dollars. Definitely should not be the inconsistent format it is right now. The inconsistency of the way currency are used should be resolved. Film websites[edit]

Hi Stormedelf! It seems that Mtime and Douban are both popular websites that are often used as a source for Chinese films, such as on List of Chinese films of 2014.

However, I noticed that on List of Chinese films of 2013, it was mostly Mtime that was used; but in 2014, Douban was used more often. I don't know why the shift, but of the two websites, Mtime should probably be utilized more over Douban. I looked at both sites, and it looks like Mtime is exclusively a film website, while Douban is more of a general website/social media. I know that there is already a disclaimer at the top of the article, but don't you think we should put another currency disclaimer in the table noting that the grosses are not in US dollars but in Chinese currency? Hi, I want to ask you about another recent edit as well. Recently this was added to the Monster Hunt article, "The main success of the film has been attributed due to China's State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television (SAPPRFT) implementation of the "domestic film protection period" or the "mid-summer domestic film protection period" or simply "blackout"..." [2]

While I think the release period is a partial reason for the film's success, I don't think we can or should attribute the film's entire box office run to this "protection period". Word of mouth and reception definitely plays a role in it. If we go by the above suggested reason, that what it really takes for a domestic film to succeed in China is to bar foreign films from releasing, then how do we explain why films like Only You not being a hit, or why films such as Forever Young and Hollywood Adventures dropping so much in spite of a big and promising opening weekend. If you look at ticketing websites, the ratings for recent hit films such as Monster Hunt, Jian Bing Man and Monkey King: Hero Is Back are all significantly higher than the previously mentioned ones, this indicates quality definitely played a role. Also, we should probably mention the untrue notion that only Chinese films are getting released during this "domestic film protection period", since films such as Shaun the Sheep Movie and The Imitation Game were both recent releases in theatres.

The Mermaid's language[edit]

Hi, Stormedelf. Thljcl has been adding Cantonese to The Mermaid in both the English and Chinese Wikipedia citing Youtube trailers [3] [4]. However, it is fairly obvious that Mandarin is the actual language, and Cantonese was dubbed, and not the original language for the film. I mean even Hong Kong's South China Morning Post (http://www.scmp.com/lifestyle/film-tv/article/1911884/film-review-mermaid-stephen-chows-environmental-morality-tale) stated quite explicitly: "The film’s Hong Kong version features badly dubbed Cantonese that can be distracting for local viewers", and Screen International (http://www.screendaily.com/reviews/mermaid-review/5100027.article?blocktitle=Latest-Reviews&contentID=592) stated that it was "filmed in Mandarin as (opposed to the writer-director’s native Cantonese)". Even Yahoo! Hong Kong https://movie.yahoo-leisure.hk/movie/details/29670-%E7%BE%8E%E4%BA%BA%E9%AD%9A listed the film's language as Mandarin. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for calculation the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized).
